Easy enough to talk - you click the link on my tag after my username. I removed the excessive images as per wikipedia standards which limit the images that should be used in an article - if you'll look at other pages you will notice that it is very rare to have more than one image covering one subtopic or variant and galleries are usually avoided except in rare cases. More than one image regarding the British J-3s is excessive - those images are available to anyone who wants to see them through the wikimedia link at the bottom of the page and don't all have to be repeated on the page. Same with the J-3 being landed on the truck - neat stunt, but a second shot of it on approach adds nothing. NiD.29 (talk) 01:59, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

Nomination of Flitfire for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Flitfire is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

If I misunderstood the use that they were put to, it is the fault of the text and it needs to be reworded.

Flooding the page with pictures does not clear up such misunderstandings - improving the text does. The biggest problem with your page is its wording - non-neutral and overly flowery language that doesn't belong in an encyclopedia, and it prevents the purpose from being made clear - am I to understand that the sole use was fundraising? If that is so, then it should have been stated clearly, rather than going into a lot of unnecessary detail about the actual fundraising (garter tosses aside). The text should be neutral (no loaded words or quotes), brief and clear but it is none of these, hence the arguments. When did the fundraising end? What happened once the fundraising was over? Were they sold off or any used by the US or UK military? Sources should be to books, websites or magazines, the more authoritative on the specific subject the better. (A book on the Piper J-3 would be ideal).

Also you do not need to delete an image to rename it - there is an option to rename images, and any time you upload an image, you should also categorize it - in this case I added your images to Commons:Category:Piper J-3 Flitfire - this is done by clicking the category option at the top of the images page - this automatically adds the image to any category you list there. Images should not be covered by copyright, which leaves images from public databases and those donated by the photographer being just about the only legal sources - screen captures and scans from publications and images from sources online that do not both own the image rights, and provide them under a free licence cannot be used and will be deleted. I suspect some of your images may fail on these grounds.

I hope you will continue to contribute - we all go through these misunderstandings when we first start - wikipedia has tons and tons of rules, and it is easy to get hung up on one or two. Look at aircraft articles that have been nominated as good articles (GA) for an idea of what newer articles should eventually look like. Check out the discussions at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Aircraft and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Aviation where the people in the project come to a consensus of what should and should not be included, and the format. The rules are not cast in stone but every variation needs to be discussed for it to be accepted, and what passes is not based on numbers, but on the strength of the arguments both in favour and opposed. In this case there are rules governing how many images should be included - and yes there are pages with an excessive number, but that is an on going battle mostly against fanbois and nationalists.NiD.29 (talk) 23:30, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

Excuse me, but quoting articles is not a copyright infringement if a person credits the source. I have studied other articles to figure out what's allowed & what's not. So why is that not the standard here? I have taken data from different sources & credited each source. Nigel Ish also undid edits from other people who streamlined the citations (references). Why? Please quit vandalizing the article. Edit the Piper article for copyright violations; otherwise, this is a double standard. Thank you.

Hello Cubgirl4444 I am busy at the moment but I can look at your additions and see what is going on for you later today with the text that keeps being removed, just to note the "American Warplanes of WWII" is actually a copy of the wiki article not the other way around, publishers copy the articles into a book form to get punters to buy them based on the titles but all the work is done by wikipedia. Sorry to say that the text that Nigel Ish removed was a direct copy word-for-word of the page at http://eaavintage.org/the-flitfire-cub/ which is marked All Rights Reserved. Wikipedia has a strict policy about copyright violation and that is why it was removed. It is OK to use a page like the EAA one as a source of information but you need to write it in your own words. Perhaps you need to have a read of Wikipedia:Copyrights and understand how it all works, you need to understand that copyright violation is just not allowed. You need to be carefull as if you continue to add copyrighted material you are likely to be blocked as you were at commons, we dont really want to do that as it is better for all of us to have people with a passion and knowledge for the subject helping us improve the encyclopedia. Whatever you may think about other users here they will the first to help and improve any contributions you make but the need to be balanced and within the rules and consensus that has been built up. Perhaps its time to just wait to see what decision is made over the Flitfire article, if it is kept then everybody will help improve the article. If you have any questions or need further help then please ask them here and I or another admin will be along to help (you can also use the text {{Admin help}} which will get the attention of passing admins, just use the bit between the nowiki bits). Ok thanks... Nigel Ish removed four entire sections of the work and it was NOT all from the EAA article. As a matter of fact, the EAA erroneously reports there were 50 Flitfires. There were only 49. But I did like some of their word smithing. Anyway, everything has been rewritten and I like my word smiting much better!

Who do I ask about the copyrights permissions I'm trying to get for photos? If posting copyright photos is not allowed even with special permission, then I don't want to waste my time getting them, except for maybe a private web page I could start on Flitfires.

I have to say, I've owned a Flitfire for 30 years and know more about them than probably anyone else on earth. Mine was the first one restored in 1991. Trying to share this on Wiki has been frustrating: work getting deleted, the article immediately got nominated for deletion and then getting banned on Commons (even if it was only for one day). Just learning to "talk" is a chore as it's not an intuitive system. And that BOT that goes around deleting your work if you're a newbie and forget to put in an "edit summary" or forget to check the "minor edit box" was frustrating.

All in all, if you all want to delete my work on the Flitfire, then go ahead because just I'm tired of fighting for this here. If I had fond memories of the Wiki experience, I might feel differently. It was quite a surprise to learn how the Wiki world works and from my viewpoint, it's not a very friendly place. Some of them are stupid, but the paranoia about copyright is not actually wikipedia's fault, it is a byproduct of all the wikipedia servers being legally located in the good old USA. I've run that gauntlet before, so I mostly know the ropes now, if you'd like me to give you the crash course on how to navigate the trigger-happy copyright-ack-ack-guns. Oh, and forgot to mention... I do thank you for reporting the apparent-copyright-violation in the Piper_J-3_Cub#Flitfire section, which is also word-for-word in this book you linked to.[2] But in reality, if you look closely, you will see what is going on is not wikipedia violating copyright of some existing book, but some entrepreneur going by the name of PediaPress who is selling *printed* copies of wikipedia articles. In other words, wikipedia didn't copy from the book (not allowed), the *book* is copying from wikipedia (which surprisingly enough *is* perfectly allowed). See the information about pillar three, which says that wikipedia content is under a libre license (actually it is under two). Anyways, appreciate your sharp eye, but there turned out to be a good explanation for the copying, and wikipedia wasn't at fault, and nor was the book at fault that reprinted wikipedia-content per the license-agreement. 75.108.94.227 (talk) 23:50, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

From that conversation, you can see that Ahunt has good intentions. You are attributing malice, where none exists. That is the fundamental problem, you have to be WP:NICE even when you don't like what is happening. I'm not saying that you should LIKE getting 'nominated' for deletion, and that you should LIKE seeing a bunch of the article-prose get deleted. I'm saying that even when you *dislike* what is happening, that's no excuse to lash out. Keep to the high moral ground, and keep your cool. The rest is easy, if you can keep calm and reasonable. So normally, people aren't supposed to use the article talkpages, like Talk:Flitfire_Brigade, like I've been using it. Which is to say, abusing it to jabber about wiki-policies, and start a wiki-conversation. That Talk:Flitfire Brigade page is really supposed to be about, you know, improving the Flitfire article. And not really about dispute resolution. Are most of your questions getting answered? If so, I suggest we move the conversation to our userpages, rather than the article-talkpage. The main problem here, is that you misunderstood what Ahunt was doing, and in turn, Ahunt misunderstood what *you* were doing... that you weren't ignoring them... you just forgot where the stupid article-talkpage even was.  :-)     When you've been around wikipedia as long as Ahunt has, it is easy to forget how harsh wikipedia is on beginners, and that there are too many dern pages to memorize.

  Anyways, I like you even though I've never met you, and hope you will stick out these tough times. Once you get the hang of it, wikipedia is pretty fun. But it's tough at first. You can leave me a note on my usertalkpage, if you want a sympathetic ear. It doesn't count as "canvassing" to alert wikiproject members, and it also doesn't count as canvassing to leave a neutral note asking for advice, on the userpage of somebody you are friendly with. Anyways, I think you have the makings of a great wikipedian, and you are free to leave me a note at any time; I'm gonna step back from the article-talkpage for a bit, and see if you and Ahunt and Steelpillow can work things out amongst yourselves.

i'm not sure who this is, but when i put in a dispute resolution, it asks if the dispute was extensively discussed on the article's talk page. so i was criticized for not finding the talk page and not discussing. now i'm being criticized for doing just that.

This is 75.108, I'm the person trying to help keep the list of flitfires. And also getting confused about the symbolism of NC1776. But most of all just trying to be friendly, and help you overcome the wiki-friction and get back to working on the article. That said, if you don't want your prose to be subjected to criticism, then yes, wikipedia is not for you. I can recommend several offsite webhosting systems, where you can build in peace, and put in what you wish. Given your long study of the subject, your off-wikipedia website would almost certainly qualify as wiki-reliable, and could thus be used here in the wikipedia article, cited by amateurs like myself. Be that as it may.... The wiki-culture here is extremely weird (even for the internet), and takes a lot of getting used to. Most people never do. I think you have what it takes to stay, but it is definitely WP:CHOICE that you can make. I urge you to tough it out for a bit longer, another month or so, but I won't try to pretend you'll enjoy it at first: wikipedia is not an easy place to like, and until you get the hang of how to bypass the red tape and the byzantine wiki-rules (which I can teach you if you're willing), you will constantly be getting hung up on wiki-thorns in the wiki-jungle. Anyways, let me know if you change your mind about quitting, or have questions, or just want to chitchat about history a bit; it's allowed on userpages, to chitchat, most of the wiki-rules about every-little-thing-must-be-written-in-99-textbooks only applies to articles, we can be a bit more free here on userpages, as it were. 75.108.94.227 (talk) 09:45, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi again Cubgirl, it is always better to say the just-the-facts phrase "intends to" rather than the predictive-evaluative phrase "will" when speaking of future events. Compare:

• Mitt Romney hopes to be inaugurated in January 2013. (preceding sentence written in mid-2012)
• Mitt Romney intends to be inaugurated in January 2013. (preceding sentence written in mid-2012)
• Mitt Romney will be inaugurated in January 2013. (preceding sentence written in mid-2012)

Better to only write history, after that history has already happened:

• As of January 2013, Mitt Romney was an executive at Marriott, alongside some of the major donors to his 2012 campaign. (written in mid-2013 retroactively)

It is sometimes okay to write down stuff about intentions and hopes and such... but usually, only if those specific hopes/intentions/plans/dreams/whatever have been mentioned by journalists, see WP:CRYSTAL.

Also, best-practice is to never use words like "innovative" unless they are in a direct quote from some newspaper/television/etc piece that specifically uses such flowery language in the journalist's voice. Compare:

• The 65 HP engine of the Flitfire was air-cooled. (boring cold hard just-the-fact wiki-neutral prose)
• The powerful 65 HP engine of the incredible Flitfire was scientifically air-cooled for lighter overall weight and improved MTBF at an extremely reasonable price-performance ratio. (written by a proponent/fan)
• The wimpy 65 HP "power" plant of the ugly Flitfire used obsolete puff-based radiative-cooling, when soon the first innovative jet turbines would be put into experimental trials, and sleek oil-cooled goodness was already typical of REAL airplaines. (written by an opponent/naysayer)
