Yes, well, it was a rather irate response by me and therefore not a particularly good one. I don't have a great deal of time for that kind of obvious posing and sometimes the best way to get rid of it is to just chop it off at the knees. Anyway, both statements appear to have gone now, and that's good. Too strident, eh?

I just get very _very_ nervous when we start to decide to overturn a ruling based on things that resemble a quorum. What makes us suspect that we'd get wider participation if we listed it again? Unless we did notify every person who'd contributed to to article, and how are we going to balance out the bias that they'd present?

I'm actually not at all arguing with the idea of what you are saying, I'm thinking more of the pragmatics of the thing. Thanks for listening.

Whew. That's a lot of concerns in one diff!

• As to AfD scaling, I've very nearly completed AFD:365DAYS and will be releasing that into the wild shortly. It's not all bad news, but it's not quite ready.
• As to the massive watchlist, I'd like the developers to give us some more options. Even simply being able to filter by namespace (like with contributions) would be great, and a "whitelist" of contributors that I could choose to hide their last edits (as we do our own) would be spectacular.
• Finally, your last point, which is really about civilty, which is really about respect. I've had my lapses, but they been um, fairly focused, shall we say? In the longer run, the problem with civility is actually the greatest one we face. If we don't come to terms with that, and with the examples that our ersatz leaders are providing, the other problems won't matter.

NLT

It's pretty well-established that continuing to make legal threats after having been very clearly warned to stop (note the difference between getting no warning at all) is what is done on Wikipedia. There's another case at WP:AN/I#Request review and possible block inre: WP:NLT, where another admin has done the same thing. There's nothing at all unusual in my action, and the making of legal threats is an excellent way for a user with a registered account to get it shot-on-sight, indeed, the making of such threats is a way some of our most-quickly removed editors have gone and it's usually a libel threat that does it. A case recently would be that of Jack Sarfatti, you'll have to dig through the archives of AN/I for that. A block on Wikipedia makes no difference to his ability to do whatever paperwork he needs to do since, for a start, his case is probably either against the Wikimedia Foundation or the editors of the article, both of whom he can get hold despite the block. There was nothing implied about his use of legal proceedings — he was being quite explicit about it. I do not think that a block "give[s] fodder" to people, or that we should be shy of looking after the free nature of the editing process on the basis of legal hypotheticals. Blocks (and even bans) aren't real remember: even the worst of the trolls could invisibly circumvent them just by playing nicely. -Splash^talk 08:50, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

Berghoff Image

The photograph of The Berghoff (restaurant) is a nice addition to the article. As a "native Chicagoan" (although living in Iowa for most of my adult life), that article first caught my interest when it was referenced in Did you know... on the Main Page a little while back. As a UIUC alum, it was also interesting to see the note about the Daily Illini immediately preceding this one :) and to take a quick look, for now, at the article. The Federal Reserve System and the US Dollar

Recalling the BB69 matter back in December, a somewhat interesting discourse (with, shall we say, some "similarities") has been developing with an editor named "Xode" at the discussion page Talk:United States Dollar at:

under the heading for Factuality Dispute. I am in no way comparing Xode's conduct to the outrageous behavior of BB69. The similarity lies in part in the way certain editors seem to be on a "mission" to educate everyone on what they perceive as some great injustice and, I argue, want to use Wikipedia as a soapbox as part of that mission. When you see the materials Xode is promoting regarding the Federal Reserve and the banking system and compare them to the tax protester rhetoric, I think you'll know exactly what is going on. Please don't change another editor's choice of English; "earnt" is perfectly correct. You might prefer "earned" (it looks odd to me, though I'm aware that it's an acceptable alternative), but that sort of choice lies with the original writer. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 10:29, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

1. Dictionaries rarely give the full conjugations of verbs, so it's unsurprising that yours don't in this case.
2. I take it that you're American, from the dictionaries you cite; the article is in British English.
3. You did something, I asked you not to do it; it wasn't a broad generalised statement (in fact it wasn't a statement at all, but a request). If you felt lectured, I'm afraid that all I can say is that that wasn't the intention, and on rereading what I wrote I still don't see it. The fact is that Wikipedia policy is that the form of English used should be that of the first major editor of an article unless there's good reason to change it (usually because another form of English is more appropriate to the subject matter), and that's what I said.
