Welcome
editHello, DaanS, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the Wikipedia Boot Camp, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}}
on your user page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
- The Five Pillars of Wikipedia
- How to edit a page
- Editing tutorial
- Picture tutorial
- How to write a great article
- Naming conventions
- Manual of Style
I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. When to Be Bold
editAs a beginning Wikipedian, I keep running into situations where I'm not sure if I should Be Bold. For example, when I believe part of an article is incorrect but reflecting a use so common it could be argued to be appropriate. Or when I think "I'm no expert on this matter, but everything I've ever learned about it says this is incorrect".
Are there guidelines for such situations? Should I just Be Bold and hope someone will revert my change if it's not appropriate? Should I ask for a review of my opinion on the subject's Talk? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by DaanS (talk • contribs) .
- Well, this is a complex situation, and edit wars have been known to break out in these cases. If the change has never been made before, go ahead and make it and explain why on the talk page. If the change has been made before, and reverted, the best thing to do is hold off on making the change and try to start (or continue) a discussion on the talk page. This will hopefully head off any edit wars at the pass. And also, if someone does revert you, you should almost never revert them back. Discussion on the talk page is always preferable to a nice, fun revert war which can get you blocked. I hope this answers your question; if not, or you need more clarification, please let me know. —BorgHunter

- Thanks for the explanation. If I may ask for an example, I've suggested a change on Talk:Guarded commands. Renaming an article seems like a Big Thing for me, and I'm uncomfortable just doing it. Should I Be Bold? DaanS 16:22, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
Hi DaanS... are you still needing assistance??? —akghetto talk 17:10, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
- There is a formal procedure for doing page moves: Wikipedia:Requested moves. You can get a page listed there, and discussion occurs for 5 days about whether the move should be carried out. That may put your mind at rest. Alternatively you could be bold, which seems reasonable to me. Keep in mind that renaming an article is done using the "Move" button - see Help:Moving a page.--Commander Keane 17:13, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
