The Hurricane Herald
This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list. This newsletter covers all of February 2008.
Please visit this page and bookmark any suggestions of interest to you. This will help improve monitoring of the WikiProject's articles.
Storm of the month
Cyclone Ivan formed on February 7 and subsequently executed a loop to the west-southwest. Encountering favorable conditions, it strengthened to attain peak winds on February 17 before striking northeastern Madagascar. It degenerated into a remnant low pressure area as it crossed the island, and briefly re-organized into a weak tropical depression before dissipating on February 22. Ivan caused heavy damage in Madagascar, leaving 190,000 people homeless and causing over 83 deaths.
Other tropical cyclone activity
- In the South Pacific ocean, Cyclone Gene persisted from the previous month; a tropical depression also occurred in the month.
- Tropical Cyclone Nicholas was the only named storm during the month in the Australian region, which struck Western Australia. Two tropical lows occurred during the month, the latter of which later formed into Tropical Cyclone Ophelia.
- Four storms occurred in the Southwest Indian Ocean, including two from the previous month and the aforementioned Cyclone Ivan. Cyclone Hondo became the strongest cyclone worldwide in the month, and after becoming extratropical it regenerated over ten days later about 1750 miles (2800 km) to its west-northwest.
Member of the month
The February member of the month is RattleMan, for his lasting dedication and continual support of the project. During February, the user worked on improving the timeline articles for the previous season. RattleMan often updates the sections on storms in season articles, and helps to maintain the southern hemisphere articles.
New and improved articles
- There were 6 new pieces of Featured content : Hurricane Felix (featured picture), Hurricane Isis (1998), Tropical Storm Alberto (2006), Hurricane John (2006), Tropical cyclone, and Hurricane Isabel (featured picture)
- New Good articles include: Hurricane Gracie, Hurricane Ava (1973), Hurricane Flossy (1956)
- New storm articles include: 1935 Yankee hurricane, Hurricane Ginny, Cyclone Agni, 1917 Pinar del Río hurricane
- New non-storm articles include: List of North Carolina hurricanes (1950-1979)
Main Page content
- Today's Featured Article: Hurricane Isis (1998) appeared on the Main Page in the Today's Featured Article on February 15
- Entries from 3 articles: Hurricane Naomi (1968), Hurricane Darby (1992), and Hurricane Hernan (2002) appeared on the Main Page in the Did you know column during February.

33.1 | 33.9 | 33.1 | 34.3 |
Improvements During the month, a total of 15 new articles were added, though the net increase in start or stub articles was only three. The highest quality set of articles for a basin is for the Eastern Pacific Ocean, of which half of its articles are either a good article or better; all of its retired storm articles are good or better. However, the basin has a lower total number of articles, and the Atlantic basin has a higher overall total of good articles.
There is a drive to increase the number of featured topics, which is located on the project talk page.

I noticed that the consensus at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Neopets plots (2nd nomination) seems to have been a transwiki. Out of curiosity, where was it transwikied to (if it was at all)? I don't see it at either of the wikis discussed (the Neopets Wikia or the Pink Poogle Toy NeoDex).
If it wasn't transwikied, I suppose I should ask for it to be restored to my userspace, and I'll do it? —AySz88\^-^ 05:43, 2 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
- I read the consensus as delete, hence the first line reads "The result of this discussion was delete". However, if you wish to transwiki it, I'll send you the content and the edit history via email. Daniel (talk) 02:42, 3 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
A tag has been placed on Template:A-League2006-07Finals requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. Hi Daniel, just a question about the rejection of the Howard RfM. Of the original editors invited to the RfM, only one declined in the hope that would cause the RfM to be rejected. The many other editors on the list were not involved in the article or discussions for many months. They were only invited later after someone requested them, however we knew that such a large invitation of people from the deep past would never result in every one of them accepting. I thought that in this case, because we were inviting people who had disappeared from Wikipedia long ago that the RfM would be accepted even if not all participants responded.Lester 03:09, 3 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
- Fair point, I've reverted my edit. I've also sent a link to your comment here to the Chair, WJBscribe, and he'll make a decision shortly. Daniel (talk) 03:10, 3 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
- Thanks Daniel for reverting the decision. There was much edit waring and incivility on the JH article and Talk Page over this PNG issue. There are many editors who wish to discuss it, but stop discussing at the point the article becomes uncivil. I am hoping that the RfM can at least provide an environment for civil discussion. Thanks again, Lester 03:28, 3 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
On 3 March, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article 1917 Pinar del Río hurricane, which you recently nominated. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

I wanted to personally thank you, Daniel, for your support in my recent RfB. I also must take the opportunity as I have been remiss for far too long thanking you for your calm and level-headed stewardship of the Mahmoud Ahmadinijead mediation. You remain one of the wikipedians I try and emulate when engaged in difficult discussions. I am thankful and appreciative that you feel that I am worthy of the trust the community requires of its bureaucrats, and I hope to continue to behave in a way that maintains your trust in me and my actions. I have heard the community's voice that they require more of a presence at RfA's of prospective bureaucrats, and I will do my best over the near future to demonstrate such a presence and allow the community to see my philosophy and practices in action. I hope I can continue to count on your support when I decide to once again undergo an RfB. If you have any suggestions, comments, or constructive criticisms, please let me know via talkpage or e-mail. Thank you again. -- Avi (talk) 15:56, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
- Thank you for your kind words - they are extremely flattering coming from someone I respect so highly as an all-round Wikipedian and administrator. I was extremely happy you indicated you plan on having another shot at RfB, and if you remember I'd be happy to be on the end of a casual poke to the fact that you are re-running, should it happen, in the event that my activity is sporadic and as a result I may miss it. Cheers, Daniel (talk) 10:40, 10 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Is all forgiven between you and me? I hope it is. You see, I'm basically done editing here as I plan to quit when my user talk edits reach 1,000, so I'm basically on my last legs due to my own stupidity and MYSPACEing, which I have decided that the project is basically and fundamentally better without. You've been my good friend up until recently, and even after that I still hold you as one of my wiki-idols. Unless something happens that restricts me to not being able to edit user talk pages, I'm afraid these will be our final goodbyes. I wish you well in real life. Can you please explain the OTRS request 2007110910016335 on the Wikimedia commons? You applied it to several currency images. [1] Parhamr 06:29, March 13, 2008 (UTC)
- The other part of my summary explains it — "replacement to include "specimen" over image". Daniel (talk) 06:38, 13 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
- That part makes sense to me. I just do not understand who made the request or why the change is necessary. I had looked and hunted across various treasury and mint websites for image policies and never saw any mandates for 'specimen' on images. Parhamr (talk) 06:44, 13 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
- According to federal law, "illustration[s]" of bills must be "of a size less than three-fourths or more than one and one-half, in linear dimension, of each part of any matter so illustrated;" if they are not (as the current uploads are), they require this specimen annotation across them. This was requested of us by a contractor "for the U.S. Government via the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, United States Secret Service and the Federal Reserve", and the email correspondance was CC-ed to various government email addresses. A cursory check confirmed that this person was employed with someone who was contracted by the U.S. Government in this regard, and it was a protective measure on behalf of myself to a well-argued request from somebody who was confirmed to be representing who he claimed to be. A very tangentable issue can be read here, relating to Photoshop, which I just found now and found interesting.
- If you are not satisfied with this response, I invite you to contact any one of the other OTRS volunteers with access to the Quality queue for a review (I can provide you with names if you like), but I respectfully request that you don't revert my uploads until such a review occurs. Cheers, Daniel (talk) 06:58, 13 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
- I appreciate your responses, thank you for your time. I will take you up on your offer for other persons to contact. My argument is thus: dimensions (pixels) on screens have zero correspondence to the dimensions (inches, etc.) of real life objects. Sure, there are standards for output dimensions (72 pixels per inch for Macintoshes and websites, 96 ppi on many Windows machines, 300 ppi for many printing processes) but these do not correspond to dimensions of physical objects. The "less than three-fourths or more than one and one-half" rule does not apply here. It has been misinterpreted by this government contractor and misapplied by you. I mean this as respectfully as possible and apologize for this nitpick. —Parhamr (talk) 07:35, 13 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
- Yep, sure. I believe Dmcdevit and Alison may be able to help you, although it may take a little while due to time zones, and if you aren't satisfied with that you can email otrs-en-l[at]lists.wikimedia.org and everybody with OTRS access can take part. This Arbitration case is closed and the final decision has been published at the link above. PHG (talk · contribs) is prohibited from editing articles relating to medieval or ancient history for a period of one year. He is permitted to make suggestions on talk pages, provided that he interacts with other editors in a civil fashion. PHG is reminded that in contributing to Wikipedia (including his talkpage contributions, contributions in other subject-matter areas, and contributions after the one-year editing restriction has expired), it is important that all sourced edits must fairly and accurately reflect the content of the cited work taken as a whole. PHG is also reminded that Wikipedia is a collaborative project and it is essential that all editors work towards compromise and a neutral point of view in a good-faith fashion. When one editor finds themselves at odds with most other editors on a topic, it can be disruptive to continue repeating the same argument. After suggestions have been properly considered and debated, and possible options considered, if a consensus is clear, the collegial and cooperative thing to do is to acknowledge the consensus, and move on to other debates.
PHG is encouraged to continue contributing to Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects in other ways, including by suggesting topics for articles, making well-sourced suggestions on talkpages, and continuing to contribute free-content images to Wikimedia Commons.

- Agreed. PR on the way, by the way :) Daniel (talk) 16:13, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Four hours late, any chance you could post it? Gatoclass (talk) 03:26, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
- Espresso Addict (talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA) beat me to it :) Daniel (talk) 04:22, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
- Yeah, wouldn't you know it, he was doing the update even as I was posting to you :/ But thanks anyhow ;) Gatoclass (talk) 04:47, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
FYI, the Betacommand RFAR page shows "Arbitrators' opinions on hearing this matter (0/0/0/0)". —Wknight94 (talk) 15:44, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
- Crap, thanks (I didn't copy the header over...). Daniel (talk) 15:47, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Are you going to copy my base statement over from the request to the main case page? If not, am I supposed to do it? Bellwether BC 17:15, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
- This is it, no? Daniel (talk) 23:10, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
- That is it. When I posted the question to you, it didn't appear as if it were on that page yet. Thanks! Bellwether BC 23:34, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
You said "Please submit your evidence within one week, if possible." - I'm going to be away over Easter (next weekend), and there are only four days until I leave, so would it be possible to submit evidence after Easter, on or around 25th March? Carcharoth (talk) 22:15, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
- Yeah, sure. That's just a rougle guide - I cannot see this case being closed within seven days, somehow :) Cheers, Daniel (talk) 23:10, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
- Oops. I see you are on the case at Kirill's talk page already. Sorry about that. Some cases have more active clerks than others. :-) One thing I was looking at was the numerous threads at WT:RFARB. Some of those might be mentioned in evidence anyway, but others might be mentioned as part of the request process. Would a list of those threads (eventually updated to archive links) be useful? I note that when setting up the case you linked to threaded discussion that took place in the RFARB, but some of those discussions continued at WT:RFARB, so maybe just a teeny bit more linking is needed there to fill things out a bit? As I said, I may mention some of this in evidence (I tend to go into background stuff maybe more than is needed sometimes), but just thought I'd point this out. And yes, I know I said I would be leaving this until after Easter! Hopefully I will be able to avoid spending the time needed for a proper evidence submission until after then... (secretly, I'm hoping lots of people will do most of that before I get round to it - did I say secretly? Oops!). Carcharoth (talk) 03:45, 17 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
- When I opened the case at 0300 local time, I looked at WT:RfAr and contemplated matching statements up with discussions and linking. Then I fell asleep with my head on the keyboard. If you'd be so kind as to work that giant mess out, I will give you a giant e-cookie </bribery> :) Cheers, Daniel (talk) 03:48, 17 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
- Keyboards make uncomfortable pillows! I'll plop a list onto the talk page. A few other things: the list of parties could be trimmed as I think the initial listing by Maxim was a bit random (maybe ask him or others?). I know it is fairly common for some parties to a case to never make a statement, never get mentioned in evidence (or only in passing), and to never get mentioned in the final decision or workshop pages, but it does seem silly sometimes. I've asked User:Friday if they can remember why they were a party. The other two people that never made a statement were Hammersoft and Badagnani (I think they were involved, but that is only my opinion). Also, Arthur Rubin's statement is still under "non-parties" on the talk page, and it might be an idea to tell Coren where a statement can be placed if Coren wants to make one. I'll stop there, as I'm a party to the case, so I can't get too involved with tidying things up as I might end up with a COI! Thanks. Carcharoth (talk) 03:59, 17 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
