Speedy deletion nomination of Hamilton McWhorter III
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Hamilton McWhorter III requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. The article Hamilton McWhorter III has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Does not meet military notability, because not awarded Medal of Honor or promoted to flag rank, or general notability.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Robert McClenon (talk) 23:35, 18 July 2020 (UTC)
The guy was an ace, and he flew from the start of the war until the end. There are other aces on the site that are less remarkable. What gives? Danimal57 (talk) 23:44, 18 July 2020 (UTC)

Well, it's cool that a page that I started might be interesting enough to go into DYK. Overall, there's an issue with legendary warriors, in that facts sometimes become obscured by legend. This gets compounded in WW2 because the propaganda apparat wrote the historic record. For example, the whole "one slug" myth as presented in the article is hogwash. Mac was stingy with ammunition, but it's impossible to fire a single round from a Hellcat.
Also, the "1st Hellcat ace" nonsense is only true with constraints. Mac was most likely the first guy to score five kills where all those kills were in the F6F. But how many Navy aces got their five kills in a mixture of F6F Hellcat missions mixed with missions flown in F4F Wildcats? Are those guys not "Hellcat aces"? I doubt that anybody knows whether another pilot got to ace status with a mix of Hellcat and Wildcat victories. To me, there's a lot of myth, legend, and propaganda mixed into any and all of the official histories regarding WW2 heroes.
Don't get me wrong, I like it that way and I'd like to see Mac on "did you know". He seemed like a good guy to me and he should be remembered, but there's some hokum and hogwash mixed into the facts. Danimal57 (talk) 17:50, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
DYK for Hamilton McWhorter III
editOn 4 September 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Hamilton McWhorter III, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Hamilton McWhorter III. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Hamilton McWhorter III), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000.
