Fair Use policy
editIn response to your comment about Image:Southampton FC.png, Wikipedia policy is reasonably detailed. The image in question has an appropriate fair use tag, but no rationale. Enforcement of the rationale policy has recently begun.
I invite you to add rationales to any football club logos or other fair use images that you find. I expect that validation of rationales will occur at some time in the future, so try to meet all of the criteria of a good rationale. I've found that the {{Non-free media rationale}} template is helpful for including all of the information requested. ~ BigrTex 15:53, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Welcome to the August edition of the U2 WikiProject Newsletter. As you may have noticed, we are now doing themed newsletters. This one (if you haven't already guessed) is How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. Every month the newsletter will have a different theme. There will also be a special edition when the new album is released. Also thanks to Neranei for some of the U2 news.
We have two new members since the start of the month! They are Vero444 and MC. We now have 38 members!
More info from the album page here.
Last month's newsletter incorrectly stated that there were 34 members. This should've been 36. Also, under the "U2 News" section, line 3, instead of saying most recent single it should've said most recent song (this has since been corrected). The editors sincerely apologize for any misunderstandings this may have caused. The correct version of the July newsletter can be found here.
All members of the U2 Wikiproject please note that voting for the next collaboration of the fortnight starts on THE 12TH OF AUGUST. Please visit the collaboration department for more details. |

Don't forget that the Collaboration of the Fortnight Department is up-and-running. The collaboration this fortnight is The Edge. If you would like to nominate an article, go to the Collaboration of the Fortnight Talk Page. If you have any questions contact Smithcool or Neranei.
Also Neranei has recently started the U2 Portal. Don't forget to visit it when you can.
On front cover of All That You Can't Leave Behind is a very subtle Biblical reference. In the background J 33-3 can be seen. This is a reference to verse 33 of chapter 3 of the book of Jeremiah: "Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and hidden things which you have not known." |
Welcome to the September Edition of the U2 WikiProject Newsletter. The theme for this newletter is "All That You Can't Leave Behind". We hope you enjoy reading it!
Our new members this month are Keeper76 and Jort227. We have now reached 40 members.
Take a look at the All That You Can't Leave Behind article for more info. |

Fair use disputed for Image:Southampton-FC.png
editThanks for uploading Image:Southampton-FC.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 18:30, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi - I'm trying to extend the List of Southampton F.C. players to include players from 1885 to 1939 as well as post-war players. As far as notability goes, I intend to stick with the 100 games/30 goals concept. But what about players who played in the 2 FA Cup finals in 1900 & 1902, or were Southern League champions 6 times from 1897 to 1904. Then there's the 1921-22 season when they were 3rd Division South champions as well as other promotions. Where do we stop?
I therefore plan to remove players from the existing list who are only there because of their involvement in the 1966 or 1978 promotion seasons e.g. Campbell Forsyth and Mike Pickering, but leave the 1976 FA Cup winning squad (obviously). What about the 2003 FA Cup final squad (Michael Svensson and Chris Baird) - are they sufficiently notable? If so, how are they better (ignoring recentism) than those from 1900 and 1902?
I think the article should perhaps also have a section for Saints players who played for their countries whilst on Saints' books e.g. C. B. Fry. Let me know what you think. I have copied this to the talk page for the article, so perhaps you should respond there. Best wishes & keep the faith. Daemonic Kangaroo 16:26, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the warning about the AfD. I have just got back from ten days away - fortunately, the result of the AfD was to Keep the article, thanks to your diligence. Cheers. --Daemonic Kangaroo 10:26, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

Re: Southampton
editWhile conventions are not set in stone, there should be a very good reason for not abiding by them in the cases where an exception is necessary. The convention was established by consensus, and there is no consensus, either on the Southampton talk page or on the naming convention talk page, to use anything different. If you change the pages back to ", Southampton" it will be you who is going against consensus, as well as engaging in an edit war. Waggers (talk) 10:36, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
ROI football
editI don’t think it is necessary to mention how many counties are in the Republic or repeat info that is in infobox e.g. Croke Park. The Republic of Ireland article itself explains the geography. The team is referred to as the Republic of Ireland to distinguish it from both the Ireland national football team (IFA) and the Northern Ireland national football team. Your edit also removes the link to the article England v Ireland (1949). Changes in the teams name and teams achievements should be included in opening para. These can be explained in more detail further down the article. Djln
- I have no problem with you making improvement but your edits are not improving it. The 1949 match is significant because it marked the arrival of the team on the international scene. Needs to be linked. Djln —Preceding comment was added at 20:03, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Hi - it's good to see you back. I think you'll find that your recent edit was not quite correct. According to the official site[1], Rupert Lowe is chairman of Southampton Leisure Holdings PLC and Michael Wilde is chairman of the football club. Cheers. --Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 16:12, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
File permission problem with File:Daily Echo front wiki.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:Daily Echo front wiki.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.
If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Polly (Parrot) 21:03, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
As someone concerned about Southampton articles, could you add your comments (either way) to this AfD. Cheers. --Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 22:47, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. For the Election committee, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:39, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
The file File:Old Southampton FC Crest.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Derivative work of a copyrighted design.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ~ Rob13Talk 04:42, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free image File:Daily Echo Masthead.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:Daily Echo Masthead.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 17:09, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
