Speedy deletion nomination of Joshua Ryan (USMC)

Hi, sorry to jump in, but I want to try to help you with your article. In order to ensure that the article survives the deletion process, you need to be able to demonstrate that the topic is covered in reliable external sources and that the information is not original research (i.e. information that only you know). This can be done by adding in line citations to books (including page numbers) and websites that have the information published. A good example of an article to look at for ideas is Kenneth Walker, a US Medal of Honor recipient. This article is currently undergoing an A-class review, which means that it is regarded to be close to the best work Wikipedia can produce. If you can add sources similar to the way the Kenneth Walker article has done it, the article would most likely be able to be kept. Any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me on my talk page. I understand exactly what you mean, but thats the problem, it is mostly info that personally know, otherwise ive been having lots of trouble finding records through the National Archives which would most likely be my only real source of info. Yes, that is problematic, unfortunately the encyclopedia's guidelines ask for "significant coverage" in "independent" "reliable sources". All of these terms have been more or less defined over the past five years or so, so there is often little room to manoeuvre around them. Some suggestions that I have are, though: have you searched for newspaper articles from the war? Sometimes soldiers/marines who received Silver Stars received coverage in their hometown/local newspapers. Maybe Stars and Stripes or Time Magazine perhaps might have done a piece on him - is there a way, either through the National Archives, or the Library of Congress perhaps that these could be searched? Also, do you know if Ryan's units had battalion histories published? (Here in Australia most of them do and sometimes these have references to notable members.) Unfortunately, though, I have a feeling that the article will ultimately be deleted. I'm sorry to have to tell you this, as I'm sure that you've put in a lot of work on the article and the subject is obviously worthy of respect (to me at least: I'm a very recent former soldier myself who hasn't yet come to grips with the "former" part). Anyway, as such, my suggestions are as follows: make sure you have saved a copy on your hard disk so your work isn't lost. After this, consider contacting the Home of Heroes website. I believe that they have a function that allows family members to write up a page about a servicemember, and indeed I think a number of articles about Silver Star recipients that weren't able to demonstrate significant coverage are now hosted there. Also, if you take a look at the AFD debate for the article, it appears that an editor has said that they will try to dig up some references if they can from the US Marine Corps Historical Division. They might be able to find something. As such, if the article does get deleted, but sources are found at a later date, it can be recreated upon request to an administrator. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

Help with image licencing

Hi, Dartheric1, I notice that two of the images you have uploaded have been tagged for deletion. I would like to offer you some help. I think that the issues with these images can be rectified pretty easily and that they can be saved from deletion. In order to achieve this, the following needs to be added to the page:

• an appropriate licence, e.g. the {{Template:PD-USGov-Military-Marines}} (you appear to have added a url link to it, but have not formatted it in a manner that will activate it on the page. To activate it, you need to use the correct mark up, i.e. {{Template:PD-USGov-Military-Marines}}
• the exact source of the image. For example, did you take the photograph yourself (i.e. you were there in during the war and held the camera yourself), or did you scan it from a book, get it from a website, etc. If you got it from a book or website, you need to provide the exact bibliographic details or a url link.

For an example of a correctly formatted and licenced image, please take a look at File:Color Photographed B-17E in Flight.jpg. Anyway, I think that if you can add these details that the images should be fine. If you need help with this, please message me and I will try to give you a hand. Cheers.
