That made me wonder, is country music popular in Britain? Did you move Sweepstakes to sweepstake? I know all about the plural rule, but in this case it's incorrect to place it at sweepstake. The word only exists in plural as far as I know and even if it isn't it is used far more often in its plural form. • I barely know some of the Wikipedia conventions such as this plural rule! But in this case I believe that the non-plural form is clearly a back-formation. The term originated with horse-racing where each entrant put up a stake, and the winner would sweep all stakes. Compare famous horse race names such as the Belmont Stakes. Wait, I should add that as a note, shouldn't I? Anyway, thanks for both your input. Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

Hi Deb, thanks for your interest in this article. Your help is appreciated. But the problem is: The article as it was first created was a direct copy-paste job from a homepage, and again, the text there seems to be the copy of a mailinglist posting, and it isn't clear how the site owner is related to the original poster. Now that text is in the history forever. I thought policy was to avoid such things? I know it's my fault, i should have listed it as copyvio first and ask then, but i was in a hurry ahd had the faint hope that i can avoid the hassle with listing a copyvio this time. What do i do now about this? My proposal: save your text to my disk, revert to copyvio version, list as copyvio, copy your text int carl derga/temp. What do you think? Sorry for all this. Hi Deb. Some time ago I wrote an article entitled "Leonora". You moved it to Leonora, Western Australia and made Leonora a disambiguation page. However your entry "Leonora is a girl's name" will never have a link and could be argued against from the "wikipedia is not a dictionary" point of view; and your link to "original name of, and name of character from, Fidelio" appears to be incorrect, since the article on Fidelio refers only to "Leonore" not "Leonora". I left it as a disambig page for a couple of weeks to see if any other links got added, but they haven't. I have now converted Leonora into a redirect to the Leonora, Western Australia. My comment that it will "never have a link" was poorly expressed. What I meant was that Wikipedia does not, and is unlikely ever to, have an article on Leonora in the sense of a girl's name; therefore the entry "Leonora is a girls' name" will never be wikified to point to an article.

Granted Leonora, Western Australia is a very minor and largely unknown town, but I still find it a little difficult to accept that people who search for "Leonora" on Wikipedia are more likely to have have intended "Leonore" than what they actually typed. And regardless of their intentions, "... Fidelio, in which the heroine is named Leonora" is a false statement.

Since I'm pretty new around here, I'll leave the final decision to you. If you revert to a disambig page, I won't argue. But if you do revert, I think the Leonore/Leonora issue should be addressed. Something like "The name Leonora may be confused with Leonore, the original title of Beethoven's opera, Fidelio" would do the job. Hesperian 22:41, 21 Dec 2004 (UTC)

LCOTW

Hi deb, nice to find a fellow Celt (my username is the Irish word for poetry). I like your external user page; fortunately I do so little around here, and most of it on such minority interest subjects, that nobody has ever vandalised my user page, but if they did, I'd want to protect it thereafter. I've updated the LCOTW to Scottish literature; sorry for the delay and the lack of activity. The lesson seems to be: beware of Greeks bearing candidates. I will try to do some work on the Scottish artice, but most of my time here is currently going into The Cantos, which involves a lot of reading and care, especially as, by my standards at least, this is a controversial subject. I'm also trying to cut back on my wikiwork so as to leave some time for my own writing.

Thanks for the kind words. I still have a lot of work to do on the Cantos article. Two more volumes to read through and write up, a Legacy section to add and a re-write of the introductory sections, plus a general tidy-up. And lots to add to List of cultural references in The Cantos, the sort of thing that does actually show the strengths of the Wikipedia model (so few red links so far!). Translating English articals into Welsh

Hello! I do not myself speak Welsh- but am atempting to learn. I have recently discovered Wikipedia and have contributed to some articals. I would really want these articals translated into Welsh, with the hope fo indirectly contributing to the Welsh side. I recognize that you are a prolific contributer yourself, but I was hoping that you might translate some of my articals for me. Or maybe direct me to someone who might like to translate?

Arwel Perry offered yorself as someone who might be able to assit me... or know someone who would want to increase the Welsh Wikipedia by translating good articals.

Holman Fred Stephens

Hello Deb In much the same vein as one of the comments above I cannot quite see why you moved the article entitled Colonel H.F. Stephens to Holman Fred Stephens. As a fan of Col Stephens (and although I knew his full names) I know he would never be recognised as such within the context of his railways (see Colonel Stephens Railways article). In fact his whole life was tied up with "his" railways, and I was about to merge his name with the much longer (and in some cases inaccurate!) article on them when I came across your redirect. Indeed, if the new article were re-entitled Colonel Stephens and his railways it would make much more logical sense: we could then include his full name within the biographical details which need doing anyway. I have just got side-tracked following links, and ended up reading an argument about "frequent edits", which some people seem to consider a bad thing. Is what I have been doing to the Swansea page (a series of changes one/a group at a time) a bad thing? I have read about 20 pages on wikipedia policy and almost-policy today trying to find out, but I can't find anything about it. I'm not trying to get my edit count up; it's just old habit so that if any single change is a problem, it can be removed singly. Erm. Only perhaps wikipedia doesn't work that way? Hey, I want to make a major proposal — to replace AD/BC with CE/BCE. I am not asking if you agree (though of course I appreciate your views) but I wonder if you have any idea how I should make this proposal? There has been a long debate on the Jesus page, and my explanation for my proposal is very very long. It affects many pages, not just Jesus. Misspelling and Miscategorization of Adolph Wagner

To place the entry for Adolph Wagner under Adolf is certainly wrong, it is ill-advised and makes research more difficult; I wonder why it was done, and apparently without checking the facts? The German "ph" in names does not mutate into, or is ever transliterated into, "f", in proper names. It is not a general rule, neither in English nor in Wikipedia (I don't see an entry on "Fotografy". In this case, it is especially counter-productive, because the name exists in both spellings. Adolph Wagner always spelled his name the correct way, in all letters, in all publications. And finally, there actually exists an economist (of minor importance, but still) by the name of Adolf Wagner. I hope someone can revert this. Clossius 11:01, 29 May 2005 (UTC)

Welsh people section?

Hi again. I've been plodding through the "What links here" stuff for Welsh and trying to disambiguate a lot of links. Looks like you're doing exactly the same at the same time. I was wondering about some of the remaining ones. It's easy to redirect some links to Welsh language or Wales, but I was starting to wonder whether it was worth creating some sort of category or page for Welsh people, too, for the pages where the links aren't really relevant to the language or the place..? --Telsa 00:13, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Well, I have now found a whole heap of other places to send them: Welsh mythology, Welsh literature, Welsh poetry, Culture of Wales and the rest, which is helping. I don't know much about how to make categories, and Welsh and Wales already seem to suffer from a lot of "Welsh something" and "Something of Wales" articles which aren't heavily linked-to and overlap as it is. When I saw the Welsh people article (pre-redirect) I did think of actually giving it some content. If that helps, I could do that. Or does the removal of the redirect mean you're working on that? Failing that, I start to think that unwiki'ing Welsh where there's no useful link might be simplest, although not the ideal solution! --Telsa 16:22, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You can read the commentary I wrote and which is in question now. There I made a detailed explication of reasons to take into account when naming such articles. Quite objectively. The reason why Antares opposes those is obviously that Antares disagrees. Thar is presumably Antares' REASON to removal. There clearly exists no VALID reason, as talk page is intended for precisely such comments and arguments. The Swansea page

Hi Deb,

I'm sorry that the counties issue has spilled over onto the Swansea page (and other pages about UK places, too).

For my part I'm going to try to kill the debate by simply not adding to it any more. The Swansea talk page should be for the editors of the Swansea article as an aid to improving it.

Hey Deb,

I have re-opened the issue of the royal stub at [1]. I think having it produce a noble link is farcical. Those who did it originally were no doubt well meaning but I don't think they really understood what they were doing. Nobility and royalty are not the same. Your opinions would be welcomed.

naming conventions

Someone added in a sneaky edit into the Naming conventions (names and titles) last April changing the rules to be used for the Queen Mother. Another user spotted it and pointed it out to me yesterday. I removed the offending edit, which had no consensus behind it, merely a unilateral edit. (It may not have been noticed because Lulu was messing around later and had his changes reverted. People may not have noticed that before then another more serious change was made. However User:Antares911 is not happy and is accusing me of changing Wikipedia policy, whereas in fact I was restoring it to the agreed convention. Your opinions would be welcome. Elizabeth II renaming (round XXXIV)

You may have noticed *mega sigh* that yet another user has dragged up the lets rename Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom farce, only 9 days after the last vote ended. (What next? A vote every day on the issue next?) I have proposed instead this vote on Talk:Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom page:

That Wikipedia stop wasting time on endless revoting on this goddamned issue and ban votes on this issue from this page for at least six months.

Is it possible?

Hi Deb, I was wondering, is it possible to have a user account deleted? What it is I plan to concentrate more on the Welsh version of Wikipedia and I do not want to come back to this English version. I do not want to leave this account unused. I was wondering if it is possible to have my account deleted at a certain time?

This is how I see it. Since I can use my I.P. Address (If not blocked), I can use that to place the Cy links into the English project. I would enjoy using the Wicipedia Cymraeg experience to keep up with my Welsh. I have not had a good experience with the English project and my time on here has not been a good experience. It would be nice to cancel my account forthwith and concentrate more on what I enjoy, the good environment of the Welsh Wicipedia.

Request to you to refrain from misrepresentation

When making a RM regarding article Alexandra Fyodorovna of Hesse, you Deb represented the case in the page Wikipedia:Requested moves by alleging that the move would be "back" to Alix of Hesse. However it is very clear that is misrepresentation of the issue. The article was never at Alix of Hesse and such address does not yet exist. Thus the proposed move cannot be "back" to that and it is not "previous" address.
And, you claim as your apparently only reason for move, by the brief presentation space in general page RM that "The present article title is untenable. However, being "untenable" is an opinionated allegation and does not have any place in proper representation of renaming need. There you fail to present the proposal in neutral terms.
Moreover, in the Talk page (Talk:Alexandra Fyodorovna of Hesse) when giving your grounds for proposed move, you wrote "Arrigo, who carried out the move to the present name, evidently has no understanding of these standards". That is clearly a personal attack. And moreover, has no solid grounds. The answer, predictably, was "In my opinion, evidently Deb has no understanding of these standards.
In that short space, you have apparently misrepresented a case in general RM page, also used only an opinionated opinion in general RM page as the only reason for move, and also made a personal attack.

Yep. vote early and vote often. That is how the mung we have on WP:RM and Approval voting works. Just add your prefrences to the bottom of the list and vote for them. If you look at Talk:Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden you will see an example of a really nasty vote where I learnt a lesson or two! But on the second vote, to get my compromise option in I waited until it was clear that my first option would not be accepted and voted for a second option because I did not want the other name which had more votes than my first option getting in. Wrong IP address

The 69.whatever address looks like it's registered to Psb777, hence the literacy. Arrigo's dial-up account is with dnafinland.fi, and most of their dialup pool is in the 62.78.*.* range. He mostly alternates between logged-in and his DSL IP, but he used the dialup acct. to canvass for votes recently: see 62.78.105.68 contributions. Oh, the technical evidence is ironclad. 69.10.141.71 resolves to a server acknowledged on the webpage of the user of the Psb777 account...who seems of late to have developed an enduring grievance against The System and the representatives thereof. The business certainly aggravates my temper as well; but when lawyers go to sea, if you take my meaning, I think it's best to be scrupulous to the point of being punctilious in return. Disarms 'em, and they may feel constrained towards propriety. (Oh, and I doubt the Maltese gentlemen have aught to do with this, as I can't see them dialing-up a Finnish ISP regularly. It's nice to know that people still think of me, even if I am being an evil skiver. :) I've just popped in this morning to undo a whole load of vandalism that I noticed, as it looked as if the active sysops were having a nap at the time. ;) But I don't know about coming back properly. I became quite cross with Wikipedia, and it takes me a while to get over things! But I am feeling left out of all the developments to the project that have appeared over the past year, or however long it's been. crowns and paranoia

I had a message typed up for your page a couple of days ago but my browser crashed and I lost it. I forgot to reply again. Re consort crowns — I have a booklet from the Tower of London with pictures but they are all crown copyright. I searched the net to see I could find any non-copyright or fair use images but there are none of the consort crowns. It is a pity. The Crown of Queen Mary is particularly beautiful, while the image I could find of the Crown of Queen Alexandra is pretty poor. It is a particularly odd-looking, European-style rather than British-style crown. The Crown of Mary of Modena is rather theatrical — it looks like something from a Gibert and Sullivan operetta, or a 1940s Hollywood film rather than a real crown. Luckily the Crown of Queen Elizabeth does have images from her funeral that can be used.

Re User:Fenian Swine — oh goody. Another paranoid Irish republican, to join the handful of others and the paranoid unionists on here. No wonder most Irish people are heartily sick and tired of both of them, their in-your-face POV and their self-righteous attitude. Both sides are as bad as each other sometimes.
