GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

Hi Derild4921! I had a look at Fire and Ice (Warriors). You're doing a great job putting together articles and following the guidelines and policy, but the prose still needs a bit of work. I copy-edited a little, but not much. Once you have another run through, I'm happy to finish the copy-editing and reassess. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 23:52, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Suggestion
I don't think you should let Gobbles us Stiki. It's maintained by an indeffed user, which means it may come out-of-date quite soon. Also, as you said, he should be careful with it. Suggestion
It has been suggested before, but perhaps you could prod Gobbles into keeping conversations in one place instead of back-and-forth. I don't know that it's a requirement, but I also don't know of any particularly productive editors who always go back-and-forth on individual talk pages instead of keep conversations together. It might help to suggest use of the {{talkback}} template, although that could be overused pretty quickly too. Just a suggestion. Frank | talk 16:51, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Re: The Hunger Games
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I agree that the Themes section needs a lot of expansion, if we can find more sources on the topic. Even what is in there right now seems pretty thin to me. I'm also not sure if a list of the main characters even belongs in the article. I think Katniss and Peeta are the only characters important enough to be included, if any, making the section very brief anyways. Any important enough info about them can be (and probably already is) covered in the plot summary. Right now those paragraphs just seem bloated with non-notable tidbits from the book that have no third-party sources. What do you think? Andrea (talk) 03:39, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
- I'll reply here from now on unless you prefer it on your talk page? I'll search up and see if I can find any themes though I don't think there will be much. As for the characters, I cut down the characters a lot though looking a it now I agree it should probably be taken out unless some information can be found that's not already included in the article. Derild4921☼ 16:54, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
- Replying here from now on is fine. I'll see what I can find on the themes, too. Andrea (talk) 18:43, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
- After a looking around, I couldn't find any review specfically for The Hunger Games and then I found this and this which I also used for the Catching Fire page. After reading through I realized the reviews says that some of the themes also apply to The Hunger Games as well. Want to add them? Derild4921☼ 14:44, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

- I haven't had any luck either, no. Though I thought we might be able to use this somewhere, just not for the themes. Andrea (talk) 02:12, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- Well, looking at that, the part about effects of war and violence on children might be able to be slipped in. Also, do you think the Cover section is really necessary? People will probably think of it as WP:Fancruft. Derild4921☼ 17:04, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- And looking at it further the question on "What do you hope young readers take away from your books" answer can also be used. Thoughts? Derild4921☼ 17:07, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- I haven't had any luck either, no. Though I thought we might be able to use this somewhere, just not for the themes. Andrea (talk) 02:12, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I thought the series of questions about violence and children could be useful in the Origins section. There is even a bit more about Theseus in there. Maybe the last two questions could fit in with the themes, actually. I haven't had a chance to really dig through the interview and pick out what would be best to use. About the Cover section, I guess it's a bit crufty right now. Might be good if we could find a ref of Collins explaining its significance. I'll keep an eye out for that. Andrea (talk) 03:24, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
Your articles
First of all congrats on getting a GA! You've deserved it. I've rated the two most recent entries a C class, although you've copyedited one since I rated it. I'm really truly taking a wikibreak - will actually be off-line - but when I get back next week please ping me, and remind me that I've promised to copyedit both those pages for you, so you know exactly what MoS fixes you need, and prose clean-up and stuff like that. Then I'll re-assess them for you. Take care. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 00:49, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

My talkpage is a bit crazy at the moment, and I'm afraid I'll overlook them there. I'll get to them, hopefully, in the next few days. Have another copyedit for someone else to finish first. Thanks. - Thanks. Yes, I am busy. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 21:09, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
- The barnstar was a really welcome surprise. I looked at the assessment and saw that it's a C. Here Be Dragons is a short article I've written also assessed at C - I can't find any more sources and can't really add more. I think it's about the same as yours, so I've left it at C, but if you can expand more, let me know. One thing I noticed is that your writing is weaker in the plot sections than in the other sections. Personally I hate writing plot summaries, so what I do is write the rest of the article first and then come back and fill in the summary, with the thought that maybe I'll do a better job. Don't know whether it works, but you might give that a try. Your formatting is fantastic - so you've got that down. Don't hesitate to ask for copyediting help whenever you need it, (knowing that you might have to wait!). Take care. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 01:18, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

I reassessed this article as a B class, but I think, with a little more polish and elbow grease and an expansion of the themes section, that it could make a pretty good Good Article. I would suggest nominating it at WP:GA nominees, Sadads (talk)18:23, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
Derild4921 - I disagree with the above! Thank-you for re-rating the Tunnels page, as I requested. However, this article may well now sit well with the Wikipedia style guide, but it now contains numerous inaccuracies about the book, authors, publication history and more. Have you really read this book? This new article is badly written, repetitive and lacking in the all important detail of the original article. It seems to me that you value GA rating above a suitably accurate and complete reference for this book. I spent several weeks working on the original article and can confirm the integrity of all the information on the Tunnels page. I would like the original format to be re-instated. By all means tweak that and advise me of best practise (which I would welcome!) - as you originally offered, before you stormed ahead with this new version (Lifesawhirl (talk) 23:32, 16 August 2010 (UTC)) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lifesawhirl (talk • contribs)

Warriors themes?
You added some theme from the fifth chat, but I'm not sure what you are trying to get at when you mention Seekers. What does the mystical stuff have to do with spirituality? (oh, and by the way, I'm reading SkyClans Destiny now) Brambleclawx 21:39, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
- I tried paraphrasing it from the fifth chat part (control+f and theme) since I really don't get it either. Reading a few times again, I think it actually means that Holmes tried to make the Seekers similar to how Warriors is structured, with a theme of faith and spirituality so Holmes added the shapeshifting bear after finding reading some Native American stuff. The Seekers part is probably unneeded though.(Great! Hopefully some reviews can come out, the book can probably reach GA with some good reviews!) Derild4921☼ 21:50, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

- We'll let it wait for a bit, until we can nail him down after he makes a really huge mistake (worthy of a long-term block). Right now, he isn't stirring the hornet's nest enough to receive any serious punishment. Watch Special:Contributions/KoreanSentry to see if he does anything that is prohibited by policy. WP:CANVASSING is also a really big issue, and it is prohibited to garner friends off-wiki to take part in POV-warring; I'll try to do a Google sweep every now and then for certain keywords in English and Korean, so if there's friend shopping going on off-wiki in internet forums and they come back to him, then I guess he's in serious trouble. Also, according to his userpage, he claims to "Currently own and operating Korean history forum" - I suspect that these may be possible hotspots for canvassing. I assume the relevant forum is http://forum.koreansentry.com/index.php (or http://koreansentry.19.forumer.com/ this one), given the user's account name.

Congratulations on the completion of the GA review for Warriors (novel series, you have put a great effort into creating this article and were very responsive to my comments in the review. I do GA reviews a little more precisely then other reviewers, so I hope you don't mind the nitpickiness and I hope you feel the article has significantly improved. If you wouldn't mind, could you give me a little bit of feedback on my talk page on how I did in the review. I like to hear what reviewies liked and didn't like about the process so I can do them better in the future, Sadads (talk) 18:26, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Wikify Drive
Since you signed up for the September 2010 GOCE event, I wanted to invite you to participate in a similar event: the September 2010 Wikification Backlog Elimination Drive. In case you didn't know, "Wikification" is the process of formatting articles using Wiki markup (as opposed to plain text or HTML) and adding internal links to material. Barnstars will be awarded to participating editors. Thanks!
Question
I would like to write an article about places in The Hunger Games, like the districts and the Capitol, but I also want to explain rules of the Games and explain the mockingjays, so readers aren't confused because the articles mention them a lot. So, what would I call the article? --Glimmer721 (talk) 23:48, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

- Hmmm... tough one. I think something like The Hunger Games universe might work, similar to Harry Potter universe. Be careful of original research though. This is series is popular so some sources describing the world shouldn't be as hard as some other series I've worked on. Derild4921☼ 00:15, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
Sounds good. I'm calling it "Places, Terms, and Events" for right now, but I'll change it when I'm ready to publish it. Found here: User:Glimmer721/Places, Terms, Events. I've got some references down. --Glimmer721 (talk) 22:27, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Bring what you learn this year back here, and you'll be a star! Truthkeeper88 (talk) 00:51, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
