What Charles Roberts obviously did was illegal, but if a non-convicted killer cannot be called a murder in formal English, then we must stick with killer.

This is Merriam-Webster dictionary.

What Roberts did was illegal, but I am not sure if it is proper to call him a murderer since he was never convicted.
