Hello, Diana Bassplayer. Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your contributions! I'm This lousy T-shirt, one of the other editors here, and I hope you decide to stay and help contribute to this amazing repository of knowledge.

    Don't spam
    Don't infringe copyright
Don't edit where you have a conflict of interest

or even:
Ask an experienced editor to "adopt" you

Alternatively, leave me a message at my talk page or type {{helpme}} here on your talk page, and someone will try to help.

There are many ways you can contribute to Wikipedia. Here are a few ideas:
    Fight vandalism
Be a WikiFairy or a WikiGnome
    Help contribute to articles

    Perform maintenance tasks
Become a member of a project that interests you
    Help design new templates

Remember to always sign your posts on talk pages. You can do this either by clicking on the   button on the edit toolbar or by typing four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your post. This will automatically insert your signature, a link to this (your talk) page, and a timestamp.

The best way to learn about something is to experience it. Explore, learn, contribute, and don't forget to have some fun!
To get some practice editing you can use a sandbox. You can create your own private sandbox for use any time. Perfect for working on bigger projects. Then for easy access in the future, you can put {{My sandbox}} on your user page. By the way, seeing as you haven't created a user page yet, simply click here to start it.

Citation templates

edit

Hi Diana,

You asked on my talk page about links that would show how to code citations in a wikipedia article. Those curly braces, {{, indicate a template, and the documentation pages for templates start with Template:, for example Template:Cite book. If you start typing that in the search box, a list of other suggestions such as Template:Cite web will appear. (I hope that makes sense, I'm assuming that you are editing the source code directly as I do, and not using a wizard of some sort that I'm clueless about.) There's a lot to learn here, and by all means ask me on my talk page, and we can probably figure most things out together or by asking other contributors. It's nice to see you adding a page about such a magnificent botanical illustrator! Sminthopsis84 (talk) 19:24, 13 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, I've found the cite templates. That will save me some time. Now I'm just waiting to see whether the article is approved. I did not know that it was visible for editing. Diana Bassplayer (talk) 22:53, 13 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Now that I've contributed to the page, I am ineligible to review it. There is mention of it at Wikipedia_talk:PLANTS#AfC submission - 12/03, which is how I came across it, so a reviewer might appear from among the people who read that page. In the meantime, a couple of ideas about how to spruce it up further so it can pass the review with flying colours:
It would be nice to have a caption and full citation on the image; do you happen to know more about it than appears in the description at commons.wikimedia? There is a plate number, which presumably can be found by looking at volumes in BHL, then the url, volume, year could be added, and if it appeared in an article, then author, page-range, and article title.
There's a fancy way to list entries in major library catalogues, documented at Wikipedia:Authority control. I've only felt my way around in that, on this page, but perhaps with the OCLC numbers that you already have it would be possible to build such listing for Lilian Snelling.

Thanks for being so helpful. I think I've fixed it now. Diana Bassplayer (talk) 18:00, 14 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes. I'll see if someone at WT:PLANTS is available to review it. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 19:04, 14 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the "hiding the url" tip. I've used it on The Garden reference.Diana Bassplayer (talk) 23:25, 14 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
