French and Austrian generals, Battle of Wagram; Battle of Toulouse (1814)

Hello, thanks for your message and congratulations for your contributions. The two generals are now on my watchlist too, so I will help keep vandals and irrelevant content away. Austrian generals are a subject I'm interested in, although I will work on French ones exclusively. But it's good to know that someone competent is giving the Austrian generals the attention they deserve. Just to let you know, I am planning a massive extension of the Battle of Wagram, like the one I wrote on the Romanian wiki. It would be useful to have some more extensive articles on the following commanders: Prince Reuss-Plauen; Rosenberg-Orsini; Johan von Kollowrat; Archduke John; Prince Hohenzollern-Hechingen; Prince von Liechtenstein; general Radetzky; French émigré Armand von Nordmann; generals Grunne and Wimpffen and French general Roussel d'Hurbal who at the time was fighting for Austria. If you feel like contributing to creating/expanding any of these biographies, it would be great, as it would help achieve better coverage of the battle of Wagram in preparation of the expansion work that I'm planning.

Regarding the battle of Toulouse, I know that it's often the subject of debate. I've added the point of view of 3 mainstream French specialists who have written some standard work on the Napoleonic period. They believe that it was a French victory. We now have both points of view - that it was a Anglo-Allied or a French victory and we have both claims well sourced so debates should be over.Best,--Alexandru Demian (talk) 18:20, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for the compliment. I notice it when you add articles to the list of Austrian Empire generals of the French Revolutionary Wars. Your Habsburg list would make an interesting article. Technically, your format looks okay. I wonder if it might look better to sort the Lt. Field Marshals, Feldzeugmeisters/Generals of Cavalry, and Field Marshals into their own separate tables, rather than mixing all three ranks together. Just a thought. Yes, I'm thinking now only 1792-1815, but of course many of them fought before and I guess after that too. What do you think? The list allows for sorting, so I figured I could put them all together and then sort them out later, breaking them up that way. The table is a bit crowded. I wonder if a column could be eliminated, like putting Inhaber in Comments, for example. If it were me, I'd make separate lists for FMs, FZMs, and FMLs because each list could grow to encompass 1500-1918. When a table reaches a certain size, it becomes overwhelming. See Ban of Croatia for a long table. But, you're doing the work so it's your call! It's great that you write many well-researched articles about this interesting historical period. Caldiero and Sacile

Hello. Yes, I had seen your edits of the article about Caldiero and I'm very happy that due to your contributions, the article is now more complete. It has always been my point of view that, so long as a contributor quotes solid sources, any point of view is acceptable. So, no problem as far as I am concerned, on the contrary. My only objection comes when contributors try to present minority opinions as being mainstream. Caldiero is obviously not the case, but there are battles (e.g. Borodino) that are now presented on wikipedia in ways that are, in my view, historically inaccurate. Regarding the French army ranks, I've always used the actual names (translated versions such as General of Division or sometimes French rank names in italics). This is because I privilege accuracy, even if it makes things more complicated for the occasional layman reader (does a layman really care...?). Conversely, if the reader knows a thing or two about Napoleonic military history, he will probably be surprised to see the Major General rank in the French army. Re: Battle of Piave and Napoleonic Wars

Thanks for pointing out the problem about the Piave River. I hadn't noticed the article about the WW1 battle because it had "the" in the title, so I thought there was no need to mention the year. Unfortunately, I can't move it to "Battle of the Piave River (1809)" because it already exists as a redirect to the current page and I'm not familiar with the procedure in such a case.

Regarding the Battle of Marengo, I've already proposed it for an A-class review and was working on creating stubs for the more important generals involved in the battle.

I'm glad that there are other users interested in such a domain and I'd really like to congratulate you on the articles you've expanded so far, especially as you've contributed with self-made maps as well. My other long-term goals are to bring Grande Armée to featured status, expand the Imperial and Royal Army during the Napoleonic Wars (I'm not really happy with the title as a non-specialist reader would have no idea it's actually about the Austrian army) and maybe create an article on Napoleonic warfare. If you'd like to work on the same subject in the future, just give me a message and I'll see how I can help. You can also speak to Alexandru.demian, who's a good friend of mine and has a wide range of research materials.

PS: A suggestion for your articles: I think you should move the larger OOB's to separate pages as they provide detailed information which for a simple reader would seem overwhelming and they also use up a lot space. Cheers, Andynomite (talk) 11:00, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

Another thing: In Marengo Order of Battle you've mentioned Peter Morzin as commander of the grenadier division, but according to Kudrna ([1]) he became FML only in 1830. I think you may have confused him with his brother, Ferdinand Morzin, who became FML in 1799 and is more likely to have participated at Marengo. Andynomite (talk) 11:13, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

I'm working on cleaning up some files, and I came across File:Johann Kolowrat.jpg. You uploaded it, presumably from [2], and indicated that the copyright holder has released it into the public domain. I don't speak German, and don't even see that image at that location, so I am having trouble confirming that the copyright holder has released the file into PD. My question relates to the licensing of the image. You added a license which states:

This work has been released into the public domain by the copyright holder.

I'm looking for verification that this happened.

Based upon the dates of the image, I'm wondering if the wrong license was selected, and perhaps you meant to say that it is in the public domain because of its age, rather than in the public domain because the copyright holder released it.

I note your edit summary is:

Add public domain license.

Is it possible you determined that the print was old enough to qualify for PD, and selected "Template:PD-author" when "Template:PD-old" might have been a better choice?

The Commons license states, "This work has been released into the public domain by its author, Jens-Florian Ebert. This applies worldwide."

My guess is that someone saw the license you selected, tracked down the author and added the more specific license to Commons. However, it seems highly unlikely that Jens-Florian Ebert actually did release it, unless that phrasing is a term of art meaning that it is "released" when it is old enough.

If you agree, would you be willing to change the license on the Wikipedia image from PD-Author to PD-Old, and I'll take care of making the change at Commons, then deleting the duplicate?

I left this reply on my user page. People seem to differ about where they like to have replies so I repeat it here: "Thanks. I have written an expanded introduction and saved the page so it is online. Even after the first expanded draft, I think the article was short enough that the short introduction from the stub could still be used. I agree that with the longer article, a longer introduction is appropriate and in line with the guideline. I am trying to figure out the comment on the footnotes. I had a couple of citation needed templates put on an earlier article where I had citations for 80 to 90 per cent of the sentences and the others seemed to me to be related but they were tagged anyway. So I would like to be able to have the right form for including more than one sentence in a footnote and not have it tagged. On the other hand, since I have figured out how to make multiple references to the same footnote, I suppose that form does not waste as much space and is not a real bad alternative."Donner60 (talk) 08:22, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

By the way, here's a fresh biography I've just finished. I thought it was a pity we didn't have anything at all on this general, since he was probably the most significant artilleryman of the Napoleonic Wars, but doesn't seem to have captured the imagination of his contemporaries to the same extent as Drouot, Lariboisiere or Senarmont. Otherwise, I'm currently working on biographies of generals who fought at Wagram, in preparation of a significant expansion of the article. Also working on this. Thanks a lot for your comments and work on the article, I didn't think you would respond so fast! Great! I've done some minor editing too just now. I do want to have it up for B-class revision, just wanted to have some expert advice on content and form beforehand. The relatively easy thing with the images here is that Nansouty (and d'Hautpoul for that matter) commanded cuirassiers for much of his career. And cuirassiers seem to have captured the imagination of great many painters of the time, which is why I could find some pretty stunning pictures for the article. --Alexandru Demian (talk) 09:16, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. I understand your concerns - ACR is similar to BCR only tighter on requirements like citations, content, MOS, etc, but not as strict as a FAC reviews appear to be. I understand if you want to attain a certain quality through your own articles before attempting to preach higher standards, though - good luck getting one done soon. I am also worried this too will "time out", despite the work that has gone into it, there is a lack of reviewers at the moment - perhaps only 2 or 3 active, where 5 to 10 would be better suited for a WikiProject this big. Hi Djmaschek, sorry for being so slow in replying. I'm actually on holiday and with limited access to the internet. The phrase is indeed surprising, as Napoleon is actually saying: "I have never done any good (bestowed any favours) to that man; Metz is still ours." He is probably referring to his perception of 1813-1814 that the generals who had received the most significant promotions and titles were the ones who were least motivated to keep on fighting. Conversely, since Napoleon had not bestowed any favours to Durutte, the latter would do everything in his power to defend the city and thus prove his talents. I am cleaning up François Sebastien Charles Joseph de Croix, Count of Clerfayt (mainly adding inline citation for EB1911). I came across an in-line citation in the text that says:

That you added on 20 Feb 2010 I had a look around the net and the only mention I can find for "Smith-Kudrna" is Wikipedia articles or their mirrors. One of the other articles was Paul Davidovich which I see you added in the Smith-Kudrna citation on 7 March 2010. I had just worked it out for myself (because your fuller reference was already sitting in the external links section) My confusion was that I had assumed that "Smith-Kudrna" must have been a double barrelled name. While changing it I had an edit clash with your, but I have kept my changes which use {{snf}} and {{cite book}} to tie the short citation in the text into the References section. I agree with every word you wrote in your last posting to my talk page. I only started to use the citation templates earlier this year. FYI if you use the templates {{sfn}} {{harv}} and {{harvnb}} ("nb" stands for no brackets). You have to add the parameter ref=harv to {{cite book}} etc for them to work, but not to the {{citation}} template as it has that parameter set by default. {{sfn}} is a particularly useful template because it automagically puts in <ref name=abc> </ref>, which means that you do not have to worry about how many tims the same page is cited and if at a later date if the first citation is removed it will not break the rest of them (making page construction and maintenance easier). -- PBS (talk) 04:31, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

I've had a chance to look into the new flatlist and I confess that I don't know how to fix the problem despite the instructions. My campaignbox opens as a single row. In one case it causes the infobox to be shifted to the right of the rest of the text. How do I get the correct version in my browser cache? I tried a suggestion by user Dianaa to add wikipedia.org to the Compatibility View Settings and that didn't fix the problem. I could live with this except the article in question opens with the campaignbox in "show" mode. How can I force the page to open with the campaignbox in "hide" mode? Thanks. You need to not use IE's compatibility mode. It's all about telling it to do things old-school. It's really "backwards-compatibility" mode and entails hauling all the code for older browsers along into later versions. They use a 'broken-page' icon for a reason. Clearing cache is in your preferences, somewhere; clearing wiki-server cache is w/action=purge; there's an option in preferences→gadgets to add this to your wiki-tools. To set a particular campaign box to wake up collapsed, you would add | state = collapsed. I'll do the one I think you're talking about.  Done Alarbus (talk) 04:35, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Djmaschek, very good job on E Oswald...well assembled and noted. A mention of his father lost at sea does not seem important to the history-line, that I can see. The depth of history is quite interesting, expecially the battles. Suggest having subsection breaks in both of the two main sections. Also, suggest replacing some of the book references with some of your on-line references so readers or future reviewer can access on-lines sources for you information. Hi Djmaschek! Apologies for taking 2 full months to respond to your note from May; it's just been a hectic period for me and I thus found little time for wikipedia. Great work on these articles; I myself have left a few articles unfinished, including the one on Lagrange, another on the title Marshal of the Empire and I still feel that the one about the grenadiers à cheval is not yet up the standard that would satisfy me.. But, in any case, I guess I have to prioritise and I'd really like to finish my massive article about the battle of Wagram and get it out of my sandbox once and for all, as it took a lot of time and energy to write and it would just be a pitty if no one could actually read it. There is also a peer review request put up for the battle of Corunna and I always feel that I need to contribute when such requests are made. But then again, so little time, so much to do.. Anyways. USCGC Point Franklin (WPB-82350)

Thank you for your suggestions for edits on this article. I will try to rewrite them as you suggest, however as a former Coast Guardsman, I know that there are legal differences between "distressed" and "damaged". I would be willing to bet that the entries in the Coast Guard Historians records are taken verbatim from the cutter's logbooks. The Coast Guard, for far too many years suffered from a lack of funds and operations were far more important than someone taking history notes, so the Coast Guard Historian's Office ran on a shoestring budget. It still does to a certain extent. One can tell little attention was paid to history when several years of cutter history don't even exist in published form. Using Point Franklin as an example, there is no published cutter history from 1886 to 1998 when it was decommissioned. The history happened; the cutter was in one of three operational phases, Alpha, Bravo or Charlie. Alpha being on active patrol, Bravo; in port, for crew rest and provisioning but still on call. Charlie is yard or maintenance availabilities that would preclude being on recall. My personal experience is that Charlie takes about ten percent of a cutters available time, give or take. The rest of the time would have been spent on law enforcement duties or search and rescue. They were busy, but the Historians Office has neither the time or the manpower to update the published record of the cutter. It is a crying shame, but the Point Class of cutters is not a big priority for the Historian's Office. They are to busy trying to keep up with recording and dissemination of current affairs on a limited budget. There are, to my knowledge, no other reliable published resources for the histories of this class of cutter. The part of the class that served in Vietnam are covered in several ways that have very reliable sources of information and articles on them were very easy to write without sounding mechanical about it. It is my wish to complete this class of cutters with articles in Wikipedia, but the Historians Office published accounts of their histories are in some cases are just a few sentences. That hardly gives credit to the crews of this class of cutters that risked their lives in many instances during rescues and during law enforcement evolutions. As someone who has been there, it is a sad state of affairs but there is nothing I can do about it. Some of the articles may be nothing more than stubs, but they should really be done to complete the class. • • It occurred to me that you might be from the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard historian writes a very terse and dry history which is not much to go on. I was at Cape May for the first time last October so I guessed wrong about the Cape May Light being the same as the Delaware Light Station. I rated your article B-class. Hahn, Texas

Hey there. I have taken a good look at the Hahn Tx article. It looks to be a great start. However, I am having a tyad bit f trouble with the way maps are used. I think I have written over 2000 articles on snal places in the US and I think Hahn could be a great article if it was possible to relate why the places in Hahn are mentioned. (A famous battle, a famous family etc etc etc) Otherwise, the issue of notability comes along. Let me know how I can helpCoal town guy (talk) 20:32, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Djmaschek, whoah whoah. I am on your side and have fun as well. The only contention I would have is the levelk of detail. I am painfully aware of amller places and remote loications on the map and I am 100% with you. The only specific questions I would have are do you think its needed to include data about which quad this place is located in? AND do you think its needed to tell folks which road and if its a right or left. I think, its fantastic to have the level of detail especially for smaloler places. We all evolve and I certainly hope to do so as well. The reason I would even ask this is given the level of detail, do you think it would help or hinder? For example, the quad data could go in a geography section, and stating the geo coordibates in the article itself, is over kill, you have an info box and a title abopve the map image, how many more do you need? Again, this is a great article, love the cemetery data, however, on a lark as it were , is the cemetery populated by a famous family or persons? How many are a few oil wells? How about a section on what the oil industry meant to that place? Just some thoughts and by no means were my words meant as a challenge and most of all, to deter fun, it is fun. • auntieruth: Thanks. See Barrier Treaty article which was the first time I used it. Copy it to your sandbox and play around with it there. I don't know how to use it for areas smaller than nations.
