Instructions

edit

DodoBot tags talk pages on behalf of WikiProjects. It can also perform a variety of automatic assessments. For a more detailed description of the functions of the bot, see the explanation page. To request a tagging run, please do the following:

  1. Create a subpage in your WikiProject to be used by the bot (e.g. Wikipedia:WikiProject Toronto/Categories). (You may skip this step if you are only requesting automatic assessment of already tagged articles)
On this subpage, place a list of categories which contain articles you are sure are within the scope of your project. For example:
    Category:Apple Inc.
    Category:Google
(optional) In order to make the bot go into subcategories, specify a depth it should go to next to the category name (how many subcategories down it should go). Use Inf to make the bot go into all subcategories. If you do not specify any depth, the bot will not go into subcategories. For example:
    Category:Apple Inc. (Depth:2)
    Category:Google (Depth:Inf)
(optional) You may assign an importance to each category, and the bot will automatically fill out the |importance= in the assessment banner. If you choose not to specify importance, it will be left blank. For example:
    Category:Apple Inc. (Depth:2) (Importance:Top)
    Category:Google (Importance:High)
Don't worry about making mistakes in the formatting of the list: it will be manually reviewed before I start the bot. However, please be careful about what categories you put in the list, since these will not be checked for relevance to your WikiProject.
  2. Ensure there is consensus for the task by posting at the project's talk page.
(You may use {{subst:User talk:DodoBot/Process}} as a generic boilerplate message, or write your own message)
  3. Submit a new request
  4. Watch the request page, as there may be follow-up questions to your request.

Many thanks. -Elekhh (talk) 23:29, 10 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Also note that many of the tagged pages use old WikiProject templates which redirect to the current one. Would be good to replace them all with "WikiProject Protected areas" if possible to avoid redirects. --Elekhh (talk) 23:36, 10 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Okay, running this now. Do note that the bot will only replace the name if it is making another edit alongside it (ie. auto-stub or inheriting), since otherwise it would be making lots of trivial changes. - EdoDodo talk 15:30, 21 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Runs beautifully, very neat and nice work. If I calculated correctly with an edit per ten seconds average should be all done by ca 7pm AEST. This would have taken 100x more time for humans. Very thankful for your help DodoBot! --Elekhh (talk) 03:15, 22 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

I just realized inheritance style should have been set to liberal. If you can change that mid-course that be great! Man is this thing fast! :) --TimL (talk) 13:29, 25 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Actually I guess I'm just wondering why, e.g. Talk:Solar eclipse of July 11, 1991 did not inherit from the other two projects. --TimL (talk) 13:32, 25 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hmm... That is odd; Regardless of whether it was running with default or liberal, it should have inherited that. I really can't see why it's happening - let me know if it occurs again and I'll investigate some more. Finishing the run in default mode for now. - EdoDodo talk 21:27, 25 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Ah, nevermind. I see what happened. The page was tagged as a stub, but the other projects rated it a start-class article. Since there was a conflict, and the bot was running in default mode, it followed the process and left out the class. In liberal mode, it would have picked the highest one (so, start), but I generally wouldn't recommend that unless you have a good consensus with the WikiProject for it, since it will auto-assess things that should probably be left for a human to take a look at. I'm continuing in default mode for the moment, but if you get consensus to run the bot in liberal mode, let me know and I'll run it through your un-assessed articles, so it will assess those that it missed out before. - EdoDodo talk 21:35, 25 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi there. So is the category list you posted simply a list of all subcategories in Horror fiction? Because if so I can instruct the bot to simply find everything in Horror fiction and all its subcategories, which will be simpler. - EdoDodo talk 15:50, 21 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Additional notes: I would like the bot to not tag nor assess articles that are already tagged as part of WikiProject Morocco Tachfin (talk) 21:28, 27 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

I really don't think it would be a good idea to assess everything as mid importance, it's probably better to just leave it blank. Is that fine with you? - EdoDodo talk 15:24, 2 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Indefinite recursion can be problematic - is category:Moorish architecture and its subcategories such as Category:Moorish Revival architecture in the United States really in the scope of WP:Morocco? Also category:Gulf War (recursive: category:American military personnel killed in the Gulf War), etc. –xenotalk 15:30, 2 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict × 3) I was about to say the same thing. Also, Category:Geography of Morocco has a subcategory Category:Borders of Morocco, which in turn has a subcategory Category:Borders of Morocco, which has a subcategory Category:Territorial disputes of Morocco, which has a subcategory Category:Western Sahara, which quickly gets quite off-topic (for example Category:Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic is in it). It's probably better if you make a list of all the categories that you would like tagged instead of just having infinite recursion. - EdoDodo talk 15:33, 2 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Usually what I did in these cases was dump the category list to a sandbox somewhere (or Wikipedia:WikiProject Foo/Categories) and then let the sponsor edit it themselves. –xenotalk 15:36, 2 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
If you don't mind me asking, how did you go about creating a tree like this? Is there a tool to create a category tree, or did you do it by hand? - EdoDodo talk 15:44, 2 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
I used AWB's list builder to build the recursive list of categories (including a recursion limit in case it gets too deep) and then saved the list as wikitext and then just added the parent manually with the + prefix =) –xenotalk 15:51, 2 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
I agree importance is better left blank, I'll update the list of categories to lower the risk of out-of-scope tagging. Tachfin (talk) 00:41, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
I just looked into the categories and the examples you mentioned are pretty much the only ones when it's a little out of scope. Re Western Sahara; pretty much everything that's related to that territory is related to Morocco as well. I'll go ahead and list the cats in Morocco while exluding some when appropriate. Tachfin (talk) 00:55, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Check [1] and trim as necessary. –xenotalk 00:56, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Wow! thank you so very much :) Tachfin (talk) 00:57, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
No problem. I resorted it so categories containing "morocc" are at bottom. –xenotalk 01:00, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well that was very helpful. I trimmed the cats: [2]; I guess I don't have to specify depth? Since you spread all categories related to Morocco Tachfin (talk) 02:15, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'm doing another round of trimming since some might have slipped. Sorry I crushed your sort since I edited the old version; hope that's not a problem. Tachfin (talk) 02:23, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
  Done --Tachfin (talk) 02:32, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
I hope you don't mind - but as this is a particularly good demonstration of the concept of cross-category "subject pollution", I've used Morocco as an example here. –xenotalk 02:59, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
No absolutely not. I myself was surprised to find so many un-related categories such as: "Spanish civil war", "Moorish revival architecture" or "Gulf war". Again thank you for your much appreciated help! Tachfin (talk) 03:16, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Running this now. Apologies for the delay, I've been very busy in real life. - EdoDodo talk 14:15, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please explain What is the purpose of (e.g.) this edit? It adds no new categories to the template, as it was already tagged with {{WikiProject Africa}} and the class Morocco=yes. Is there an advantage to having both {{WikiProject Africa}} and {{WikiProject Morocco}} on a talk page? Wasn't the entire purpose of folding all of these banners into {{WikiProject Africa}} to avoid these kinds of redundancies? —Justin (koavf)TCM22:38, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

I was completely unaware of the {{WikiProject Africa}} since the requester didn't mention it at all. I'll try to sort this out later today or tomorrow by finding the pages that contain both templates and getting rid of {{WikiProject Morocco}} (and adding the Morocco=yes if necessary). - EdoDodo talk 04:40, 4 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, nicely done!
On the {{WikiProject Africa}} please note that {{WikiProject Morocco}} has two parent wikiprojects (Africa and {{WikiProject Arab World}}), the scope of these WikiProjects shouldn't interfere with the existent projects of countries they support. And typically WikiProject Morocco and its sister projects (Algeria, Tunisia) are not tagged with Africa nor Arab World for this reason, see this page for example (talk:Berber_languages). So far only Koavf (talk · contribs) tags with "Wikiproject Africa, Morocco yes". Since we are independent from the Africa WikiProject, please replace the Wikiproject Africa Morocco=yes with {{WikiProject Morocco}}. There are only a few instances where this is applicable, we oppose replacing all WikiProject Morocco banners with Africa banners.
Please also note that all of this would have probably went uneventful if this were about another country, since Koavf (talk · contribs) is vehemently anti-Moroccan and has been blocked several times for this [3] then topic banned until very recently[4]. It's safe to assume that he's annoyed that a bot works at all for WP:Morocco.
P.S: Why didn't the bot tag the category namespace?
Tachfin (talk) 14:06, 4 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Slander I suggest that you read WP:CIVIL, WP:AGF, etc. I have never said or written anything that was "vehemently anti-Moroccan" and I would like you to retract that slanderous claim. —Justin (koavf)TCM19:10, 4 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Slander? You publicly state your political convictions and your actions in this topic area have been subject to many community sanctions. "Anti-Moroccan" is not an insult. I suggest you read the definition of "Anti" and "Vehement". This page is not a venue for dispute. If what I said offended you, I apologize. Tachfin (talk) 19:51, 4 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Right I'm not anti-Moroccan and I've never said as much--the claim smacks of racism or bigotry of some kind and I find it hard to believe that you don't understand that. Just like how a critic of Israel is not an anti-Semite, the fact that I have been vocal about my opposition to policies of the Kingdom of Morocco does not make me "anti-Moroccan." For that matter, I've never been barred from editing because I was pro- or anti-anything, but because I engaged in edit-warring, which is forbidden for a variety of (good) reasons that are unrelated to why the dispute happened in the first place. I accept your apology and assume that you made an exaggeration, but I hope that you understand why I think this comment was out of place and I'm confident that this is a very small matter that can be easily forgotten. Thank you for your apology. —Justin (koavf)TCM09:02, 5 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Additional notes: This is the first run of tagging WikiProject Map articles (as I've only just set up the assessment things), didn't know what a sensible stub length was, is 1000 sensible? basically it would be nice to inherit class, and if there isn't any to inherit, then tag it based on the stub template, then if it's a few lines long assume it's a stub EdwardLane (talk) 20:36, 15 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

I just tidied up the Categories to exclude all the things I think probably don't fall withing the scope, and gave importance to various different categories, I guess some articles are in multiple categories - so if they are in a high import category that should take precedence over a low/mid importance I guess. How deep do you want me to go into the sub-categories? I think going to infinite depth is a bad idea, unless you also give me a list of categories to skip. You'll definitely want to skip Category:Departments of the University of Cambridge‎ since that goes really off-topic. For example, it gets to categories related to the work of researchers at Cambridge, like Category:3C objects. Similarly, all the various categories of football clubs might be considered off-topic (the bot would end up tagging all the articles of all the players, for example). The various Category:People from Suffolk‎ categories also contain a huge number of articles which are only slightly related. - EdoDodo talk 07:31, 20 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Additional notes: Please note that there are actually three lists of categories at Wikipedia:WikiProject Jazz/Categories; they each need to be tagged slightly differently:

  1. We need the bot to add {{WikiProject Jazz|album=yes}} to the articles (or rather, the talk pages) within the /Albums sub-listing
  2. We need the bot to add {{WikiProject Jazz|song=yes}} to the articles (or rather, the talk pages) within the /Songs sub-listing
  3. We need the bot to add {{WikiProject Jazz}} to the articles (or rather, the talk pages) within the /General sub-listing

To the best of my knowledge, /Categories represents all applicable categories and sub-categories (I deliberately omitted those that are outside the project's scope), so you should not need to worry about sub-category depth.

FYI in 2010, we had Xenobot Mk V perform (essentially) the same request. (See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Jazz/Archives/2010 1#Adding WikiProject banner). It also added {{WikiProjectBannerShell}} if and when it was able to do so.

I don't see any settings for it, but I think we do not want to inherit importance=, only inherit class=.

I have an additional request, but I am not sure whether it's technically possible, and I'm not sure whether we have consensus (see unanswered comments). I'd be interested in having the 'bot add needs-infobox=yes if the article does not have an {{Infobox foo}} template; or it can inherit this setting from another WikiProject banner, or the talk page already has {{Infobox requested}}.
