ChinaKnowledge.de
Hi Donald, thanks for your work expanding Gongsun Shu. However, I'd be very cautious with using ChinaKnowledge.de as a source. It's a useful site, but I've seen so many errors at the site I wouldn't consider it a reliable source. On its short Gongsun Shu article, for example, he got Tian Rong's name and some years wrong and more seriously, incorrectly says that Gongsun Shu failed to conquer Hanzhong. I've fixed the article with much more reliable sources such as de Crespigny and the Cambridge History of China. Cheers, -Zanhe (talk) 19:57, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Zanhe: thank you for fixing those mistakes and thank you for warning me about that website, I always try to check all information I add by searching extra for it online but unfortunately with broad Chinese history the information is rarely found in English online so this was the only website I could find that even mentioned Gongsun Shu. As I don't have that many history books about general Chinese history in my collection and most of them just write about the major dynasties I rarely edit non-monetary Chinese history articles for precisely that reason. (note that I do have a large amount of books related to Chinese numismatics but I wouldn't use those to write about the rest of Chinese history.)
- Have you encountered more errors with that website in the past? As I know that it's quite a popular reference here at the English-language Wikipedia. Could you advise me some alternative websites or do you mostly only use books? --Donald Trung (talk) 06:28, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, I've seen numerous errors on Ulrich Theobald's website over the years, although I can only recall the most recent incidences, see this and the ensuing discussion. It's still the best English website for Chinese history out there, but unfortunately it's just not good enough. I recommend searching Google books first (using both pinyin and Wade-Giles spellings, the latter still quite popular in academic publications), and only use ChinaKnowledge as a last resort. While we're at it, I also recommend http://reftag.appspot.com/, which makes formatting Google books refs a cinch. -Zanhe (talk) 19:48, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks Zanhe, I will take your advice. --Donald Trung (talk) 19:54, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

Facto Post – Issue 17 – 29 October 2018

Around 2.7 million Wikidata items have an illustrative image. These files, you might say, are Wikimedia's stock images, and if the number is large, it is still only 5% or so of items that have one. All such images are taken from Wikimedia Commons, which has 50 million media files. One key issue is how to expand the stock. Indeed, there is a tool. WD-FIST exploits the fact that each Wikipedia is differently illustrated, mostly with images from Commons but also with fair use images. An item that has sitelinks but no illustrative image can be tested to see if the linked wikis have a suitable one. This works well for a volunteer who wants to add images at a reasonable scale, and a small amount of SPARQL knowledge goes a long way in producing checklists. It should be noted, though, that there are currently 53 Wikidata properties that link to Commons, of which P18 for the basic image is just one. WD-FIST prompts the user to add signatures, plaques, pictures of graves and so on. There are a couple of hundred monograms, mostly of historical figures, and this query allows you to view all of them. commons:Category:Monograms and its subcategories provide rich scope for adding more. And so it is generally. The list of properties linking to Commons does contain a few that concern video and audio files, and rather more for maps. But it contains gems such as P3451 for "nighttime view". Over 1000 of those on Wikidata, but as for so much else, there could be yet more. Go on. Today is Wikidata's birthday. An illustrative image is always an acceptable gift, so why not add one? You can follow these easy steps: (i) log in at https://tools.wmflabs.org/widar/, (ii) paste the Petscan ID 6263583 into https://tools.wmflabs.org/fist/wdfist/ and click run, and (iii) just add cake.

Did you know?
Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has wrapped up most of their work on the 2017 wikitext editor and the visual diff tool. The team has begun investigating the needs of editors who use mobile devices. Their work board is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are fixing bugs and improving mobile editing.
Recent changes
- The Editing team has published an initial report about mobile editing.
- The Editing team has begun a design study of visual editing on the mobile website. New editors have trouble doing basic tasks on a smartphone, such as adding links to Wikipedia articles. You can read the report.
- The Reading team is working on a separate mobile-based contributions project.
- The 2006 wikitext editor is no longer supported. If you used that toolbar, then you will no longer see any toolbar. You may choose another editing tool in your editing preferences, local gadgets, or beta features.
- The Editing team described the history and status of VisualEditor in this recorded public presentation (starting at 29 minutes, 30 seconds).
- The Language team released a new version of Content Translation (CX2) last month, on International Translation Day. It integrates the visual editor to support templates, tables, and images. It also produces better wikitext when the translated article is published. [5]
Let's work together
- The Editing team wants to improve visual editing on the mobile website. Please read their ideas and tell the team what you think would help editors who use the mobile site.
- The Community Wishlist Survey begins next week.
- If you aren't reading this in your preferred language, then please help us with translations! Subscribe to the Translators mailing list or contact us directly. We will notify you when the next issue is ready for translation. Thank you!
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- You can now use TemplateWizard to edit templates. This works only with the 2010 wikitext editor and not in the visual editor or the 2017 wikitext editor. If you click on you can enter the information in a pop-up. You can turn on TemplateWizard in your beta feature preferences. [6]
Changes later this week
- You can choose to see edit conflicts in a two-column view. This is a beta feature. You can find it in your preferences. The interface for the two-column edit conflict will change. You can read more.
- When you edit with the visual editor you can use the "Automatic" citation tab. This helps you generate citations. You will now be able to write plain text citations or the title of a journal article or a book in this tab. This will search the Crossref and WorldCat databases and add the top result. [7]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 November. It will be on all wikis from 8 November (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 7 November at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.
