Hello - welcome to the talk page for DrJennyCee . I am running a course on research methods for second year students in Film Studies at Queen Mary, University of London. Over the course of 6 weeks, students made up of small groups will adopt, evaluate and edit an existing Wikipedia page (preferably with C or B class status) on a single film. I understand the rules regarding single users (and that group users are not acceptable within Wikipedia principles), and so students will need to keep track of their contributions.

I would be very grateful to hear from experienced wikipedians and/or facilitators who might be willing to support my students (and me!) in developing this part of the course, in particular, ways of keeping track of individual edits from students.DrJennyCee (talk) 13:35, 14 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedian support

edit

Hello DrJennyCee. I've got some experience working with classroom/Wikipedia projects in the past, and I'm also a grad from film school over here in Canada. Let me know what you'd like help with, either here or on my talk page (link after my signature), and I'll see what I can do. Regards, The Interior (Talk) 13:51, 14 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello The Interior - it's very kind of you to get in touch so quickly. Thank you so much for your offer of help! I hope you don't mind me responding here, rather than on your page - I am a new user to Wikipedia too, so I'll be learning alongside my students, and it helps to have material in one place! The students are starting to get going with identifying Wikipedia entries on single films which would benefit from further editing. The first problem I can foresee, aside from dealing with trolling and fast re-edits from experienced users, is to do with finding ways of collecting together individual students' edits, so that it is clear who has done what and in which group (students have been put into groups on their Virtual Learning Environment). I hope that last issue makes sense - perhaps I will be able to ask a clearer question once I have a little more experience. My next seminar with the students is on Friday (18 Jan), so perhaps if I could ask you some further questions then, would that be alright? DrJennyCee (talk) 14:00, 14 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi again! One thing you might find helpful before you get started is the Wikipedia training for educators. You're in good hands with The Interior!--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 14:24, 14 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello Sage Ross. It's good of you to contact me - I imagine you must be very busy! Thank you very much for the link: I've been working through the Wikipedia training for educators this morning, and have found it to be very helpful. I'll be posting a link to my students for the Wikipedia:Training/For students. And thank you for the kind words about The Interior! I am finding this all very exciting, and have also been reading Good Faith Collaboration: The Culture of Wikipedia[1]. DrJennyCee (talk) 14:43, 14 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
:-) Good luck!--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 15:11, 14 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi again! Did you want to use our structured course pages (described in the educators training) to organize your class? If so, let me know and I'll get you set up for it.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 16:36, 4 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hello Sage Ross. I've just looked at this and it sounds like Wikipedia would like me to set up a course page. If you're still willing to set me up for a structured course page, that would be very helpful! Many thanks and best wishes! DrJennyCee (talk) 15:31, 7 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Keeping track of edits

edit

Click on the "View history" at the top of this talk page. Then click on "contributions" next to my name. If you go to my User Page, you will have access to a tool (says "Edit counts") that does a graph and compiles numbers of edits. Everything in Wikipedia is recorded, and only an administrator can "hide" an edit. I am sure there are more tools, but that is an easy beginning. If you go to the Wikpedia Help desk I am sure they will have more knowledge than me. 7&6=thirteen () 17:43, 20 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

I keep getting an internal server error message on the "Edit Count". Not just on my page. I've let them know. Try WP:Edit count and Wikipedia:WikiProject edit counters and links therein. 7&6=thirteen () 18:17, 20 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi DrJennyCee. Thank you for leaving a message on my talk page. Yes, I believe I have made a mistake in that I did not realise the course was for enrolled students at each institution. Clearly I didn't read the information about courses on Wikipedia closely enough! Thank you for your understanding - it is much appreciated, Duffit5 (talk) 18:05, 20 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Help from WikiProject Film

edit

Hello, DrJennyCee! A fellow editor notified WikiProject Film that the Spring 2015 semester was underway. I wanted to let you know that we would be happy to support you and your students. If you need any assistance at all, any of you can leave a message at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Film. Hope the semester goes well! Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 13:09, 30 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Erik: Thanks so much, Erik! That's really brilliant to know - I'm sure the students will be vey grateful for your help. Would you be interested in becoming an online ambassador for the course? If so, do let me know. Thanks again, and all best wishes, DrJennyCee (talk) 14:50, 30 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
I would be happy to be an online ambassador! Let me know how I can help. The students can keep the Spring 2015 semester page on their watchlist, and that page's talk page can be used for group discussions. I'd be happy to answer questions there. If you need other editors to be ambassadors, we can ask WikiProject Film to see who is interested. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 15:37, 30 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

A Serious Man edits

edit

Hi there! I was curious about the flurry of edits on A Serious Man; I'm the editor who keeps making niggling changes to what appears to be your students' work. Great to see those: I had no idea the film had been the subject of academic critiques. But yes, the iterative process can sometimes seem harsh or abrupt, especially if you are a new editor. So just want to say I'm happy discuss, and help where I can, on the article's talk page, which is the ideal, or my talk page, or wherever else is convenient. Barte (talk) 21:10, 20 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hello Barte (talk). Thanks very much for your message. The students on the course understand that their work may be subject to edits by other users : thanks for making improvements to their work.. I've encouraged them to use the talk pages of articles to discuss potential changes, but it's also great to hear that you're happy to help or discuss. There is a link to the course page at the top of the talk page for A Serious Man and you'll be able to see from this which students are working on this film. If you'd like to contact any of them directly I'm sure they'd be glad to hear from you. Thanks again for being in touch. DrJennyCee (talk) 22:21, 20 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Will do. Thanks. Barte (talk) 23:59, 20 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

2016 course

edit

Hi DrJennyCee! You may recall me from last year's posts in the A Serious Man section above. I'm glad to see you're offering the course again, and per your note at the top, I'm happy to be of ambassadorial assistance to your students as they add to Wikipedia. Barte (talk) 19:41, 12 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello Barte. Sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you. That's great that you're happy to be an online ambassador for the course. I'll ask to have you added to the course if you're not on it already. I'm certain that the students will find it really helpful to hear from you! Thanks and all the best, DrJennyCee (talk) 17:12, 20 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Possible Collaboration

edit

Hello DrJennyCree, I have been working on expanding the article on E. Elias Merhige's 1990 experimental horror film Begotten via a separate userspace draft for quite some time now. My goal is to get it up to FA status, but I need help finishing the draft up before I add it all to the actual article. I was looking at participants of WP Film and I saw that you like working on articles dealing with experimental film. I was wondering if you would like to help me finish up the draft so I can bring it all into the actual article for FA status nomination. Here is the separate space where I've been working on the article from: User:Paleface Jack/Begotten (Revision Draft)--Paleface Jack (talk) 16:36, 25 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
