  • Maybe, but I had no idea what this person was trying to say. Only when they put it in the third time did I realize that "Iggy" might be the subject, not some idiot schoolmate of this idiot. Hey, are you hounding me? Oh, my regards again to the fam. We were just discussing this morning how much we'd like the four-year old to be two years old again for an hour. Enjoy it while you can, K! Haha, Drmies (talk) 14:02, 14 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well we will be at least another two years till we have another two year old...where does the time go? Hey? Have you considered autoarchiving? Boba Phat is still on here, and while I know he was crucial to the project, that was months ago! Plus it takes me forever to scroll down this far on my iPod....So when are you coming to NS? It is prime lobster season, although we both missed the Lobster Carnival. --kelapstick (talk) 14:06, 15 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Appologies for the let down, I had actually expected you to correct that for me, in fact I was going to leave a note when I left it asking you to. I must make Lobster Carnival a blue link (if I can), because I was under the impression that there would be lobsters riding Ferris Wheels and merry-go-rounds, but when I got pictures from Mrs. K (I could not attend, for obvious reasons), I was saddly dissappointed. I must inform others that the event might not be what they expect it to be. I have also been trying to gather enough information to create an article on Pictou county pizza (a style of pizza, not a brand), but have come up short once again (that's what she said).--kelapstick (talk) 00:51, 16 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sorry about the RVV label; I have been barely sweeping articles for the last few years, after spending 3 years creating 100s of them. It's a lot of work to keep up on that many, and honestly, when I see an editor who has never edited the article before come along and wipe out large portions of link sections I almost automatically assume it's vandalism, revert it, then move along. Sorry to lump your concerned effort with those. • Freechild'sup? 14:37, 14 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Discussion

edit

Against my word and yours we need to discuss this, civilly and calmly. We are obviously going to get nowhere with snarky comments and edit warring. So, how do you want to solve this? At present, there is no consensus for either inclusion or non-inclusion, as it has no been actively discussed. The inclusion is something that has just happened over time. I feel we should have (at ANI for more eyes) a discussion on this and work something out. We aren't going to get anywhere but blocked, both of us, if we continue to spit snarky comments at each other and revert each others edits. So, truce? - NeutralhomerTalk03:00, 15 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Homer, I haven't yet forgotten that you called me a "petty, arrogant troll"--on this same talk page. I make good-faith efforts to improve articles that you hadn't even edited before, and you are obviously following me and reverting me (blindly reverting me at WIAT also removed a valid maintenance template, and you know it). And no, I am not going to get blocked over this: every time you warn me about 3RR, you're the one at 3, not me.

Now, there is progress in your message: you say there is no consensus for either inclusion or exclusion. By that I think you mean "no consensus in the TV station project"--which is correct, but that's not all that matters. What I want from you, before we go anywhere, is the acknowledgment that Wikipedia's policies on BLPs and directories apply across the board, since I can not agree to anything that allows unverified information to stand. You have brought forth a few arguments for the reasonability of some of that information. I can see the possibility of a compromise there, where it concerns current staff--but why don't you start by linking to a webpage, whenever possible, where that info is verified? Some time ago you agreed that especially in the case of former staff there are BLP problems, and I think (but seriously, I am not checking your edits!) that in a number of cases (in the past anyway, if I remember correctly) where you reverted me you have not reinstated those unverified/non-notable folk, for which I applaud you (and I hope you are still of the same opinion).

Look, I'm watching the news right now on WSFA, and I want to finish watching that. In the meantime, have a look at that station's page--there's barely a notable person there, and you know it. More than half the article is directory information. I'm leaving it alone, since Rich Thomas is doing his spiel (he's obviously not just the weekend meteorologist). Thanks for your message; we'll talk later. Drmies (talk) 03:18, 15 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Just so you know I am not following your edits, we actually just popped up on the same page, please see this edit and this edit. These were for a couple days ago. There is a sockpuppet afoot, so I have been doing some reverting. They were hitting the WIAT and WVTM pages often, so I watchlisted them, otherwise, I wouldn't have seen the edits...they are outside of my watch area (I watch VA, WV, MD, PA and DC stations).
I am still open to adding links to the station bio pages. I can do that in my area, since you appear to live (I am guessing) in the Alabama area, you might want to do the same down there. As for other stations, we would have to put something on WP:TVS to get more help so it is not just two people working on this, it would get tiring very quickly.
As for the former staff, I am fine with the lists being slimmed down to notable and another editor has already started that. I think while they are at the station, they are notable. - NeutralhomerTalk03:27, 15 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Homer, this sounds fair to me. Current staff should have a link to a source (the station's website) to satisfy WP:V; for former staff, bluelinks are of course sufficient, and if at least some sort of significant reference is linked (to satisfy WP:BLP), people without WP articles make the cut as well--and they could be redlinked as an invitation to editors to write the article. I'll do one of the articles we've disagreed on, and then you can see what you think.

BTW, there is another matter: I personally don't see the justification for those slogans and lists of names of news programs and I wonder where, in most of those articles, that knowledge comes from, but we can leave that for another day. OK? In the meantime, we'll stop the namecalling and next time we disagree we'll settle it after school on the playground, under the old oak tree, with fisticuffs. Take it easy, Drmies (talk) 13:51, 15 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Looks good. My idea was to link to the reporter/anchor/etc's individual bio per a link, but this works just as good. :)
The slogans/news programs lists should be taken out. At first I was indifferent on their inclusion, but since a long time sockpuppeteer has created all those lists, they are out. I will do the VA, WV, MD, PA and DC stations sometime today.
*totally joking*Yeah! 3pm after History class! You're going down! :) Take Care...NeutralhomerTalk17:09, 15 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi there MIES, VASCO here,

Glad to see everything is (for now resolved) in this situation, even though i think (i could be wrong though) the apology is contrived, not sincere. Also (was totally caught by surprise, because i thought blocked users could do everything but edit, so i assumed they could still send messages and stuff), if you notice his talkpage, watch how he goes in an endless rant about football technicalities to justify his (not being) block(ed), then speaks about differences with two users, one of them me.

About this last part, i feel as though he is trying to make me look bad, again calling me stupid ("nonsense"), saying i don't own articles (does he?) and saying i engage in things i do not (as of now that is, i did it in the past - could his horrible English be to blame for any misunderstanding on my part?); more or less, it seems he is saying "I was blocked, how come Vasco was not?". But i will leave everything as it is - sent him a polite but to-the-point message when i saw what he wrote - hopefully this is the beginning of a good Wikiunderstanding between you two - i say "you two" because i feel that i haven't reached, for reasons that escape me, that kind of understanding with him or any other user in almost four years of editing :(

Cheers, take care - --Vasco Amaral (talk) 17:10, 15 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Hey Vasco, thanks for the note. Well, he apologized, and I accept that, so as far as I'm concerned that's the end of it. I haven't looked at his talk page and I probably won't; the lengthy explanations of other things, I saw that before. But you see, I only incidentally edit soccer articles (like last night, when you should have been in bed, haha), so I don't run into him very often. Really all I can say is I hope he gets it. He's produced a ton of edits, many of them useful, no doubt, but Wikimanners count for something as well. And it's hard, especially since all of us think we're right, usually, to deal with someone whom we think is wrong, and I'm not always good at it, but it's worth trying to get along. So, try to keep your cool. In the meantime, make sure you enjoy the rest of the summer, and adeus! Drmies (talk) 17:19, 15 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Ahem* My previous edits do not have anything to do with the warning you gave. It sounds like you are friends with another editor and are holding person grudges against users. I will have to contact Wikipedia via e-mail about that. And I was only persistent because another link was done the exact same way on the page. I have removed it. I think there's something to be said for both versions: the earlier one read better (less technical--that's appropriate to a lead) while yours had some useful content (but not such a well-formed reference). Concerning Google-fu

edit

In reply to this, I usually search for the most general first, and then refine the searches when I get too many irrelevant hits. In this case I didn't even try searching for the Islamic name, as there are too many possible spelling variants, so I simply did a Google Books search for "De Veenboer", fully expecting to get too many false positives for it to be of any use. It was just luck that the first hit was a children's book with some coverage of our De Veenboer, and the third was the book that I cited in the AfD discussion. You were certainly right to question that "1620 Deaths" book - we can't source articles from Wikipedia mirrors. Phil Bridger (talk) 19:20, 17 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Thanks Phil. Listen, ever since I nominated that article (and I didn't enjoy doing so, but AfD sometimes helps improve articles) I've had this Neil Diamond song in my head. Now, Neil Diamond is great, but "Soolaimon" sucks. Later! Drmies (talk) 19:30, 17 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I am not kidding, Mandarax--I was (take a deep breath) accused over the phone at my place of employment by the subject of a Wikipedia article who was running in a primary for some state office in Florida that I was aiming to delete his article because he had a moderate, well-balanced stance on the question of Israel and I was clearly a Zionist with an agenda both on- and off-wiki. Phew. That was fun, but only afterwards. Yes! A bacon star! That was the weirdest wiki moment I ever had. You're really an insomniac? I love sleep. Drmies (talk) 02:57, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Wow. I hope that user got banned and I sure hope he lost the election. I joke about stalking you when I peruse your contributions, but that guy's actions were potentially scary.

You love sleep? Well, to quote Joe Walsh, "Ain't never been there, they tell me it's nice ." MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 09:54, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

<--No, it wasn't Ecoleetage, although that was interesting also, but I was only sideways involved. Yes, that person did lose the primary, and a bureaucrat of some rank spoke with them over the phone. Thanks Mandarax for your note--but child duties are calling me. ("Night-Night, Little Pookie"). Drmies (talk) 15:19, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that the two users were the same. When I heard of telephone harassment I just immediately thought of that other case. (And I didn't know you were involved, sideways or otherwise.) I'm glad to hear that your guy got at least some verbal punishment, and that he lost, not only because of the harassment, but I don't like the idea of someone holding public office who apparently lacks the basic skills required to distinguish between a five-pointed bacon star and a Star of David and then makes accusations based on an erroneous assumption. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 18:07, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Mandarax, your hidden liberal agenda is right there plain for all to see who know the truth. Haha, did I mention that the candidate in question was a Democrat? That made it even worse, in my opinion. You know, I got a lot of mileage out of the story though--that particular star-error is useful in my profession as well, when I teach Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Oh, my bacon-eating Jewish colleague got a a kick out of it as well. BTW, Did I mention already that I'm kind of baconed out? Drmies (talk) 01:06, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I don't think that's necessarily the case. Thinking of internationally known scatterbrained politicians, those two immediately sprang to mind, and I can't think of any others.

You had previously mentioned that your wife was baconed out, but I'm surprised to hear it about you. That's good news, as I see an inverse relationship between bacon consumption and life expectancy. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 20:43, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

re African immigration to the United States

edit

Hi Drmies. I'm trying to figure out what is going on here... for instance, in this edit, if I'm reading it right, you reverted the addition of some bluelinked bios to the article. How come? This was a reversion of 23 edits by User:69.180.253.113; you have peppered his talk page with warnings, but why? I haven't looked at the individual edits, but the sum of the 23 edits show here looks at least defensible. He added Ayaan Hirsi Ali, and that person has a Wikipedia article. According to the article she was born and partly raised in Somalia, and now lives in the United States. And so forth. If these people have articles, and are African, and have emigrated to the United States, what is the rationale for excluding them? Herostratus (talk) 04:49, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Herostratus, you are right: when I clicked rollback I didn't look down enough to see those two additions (the "mocky" link looked like a test to me, and the resulting pictures in the infobox were terrible); I saw them later, after the IP started all over again with test edits--that's what some of those 23 edits (editor doesn't seem to use preview) are, they seriously mess up formatting. The editor has, on the whole, been less than helpful: this latest edit is typical, and a quick look at the history reveals that there isn't much productive going on here. And I didn't exactly pepper their talk page: I placed two warnings there, and I believe I was in my right to do so--the constant re-insertion of incorrect material (not the addition of Ali, obviously--and I know who she is) without any explanation, that is disruptive (I am not the only editor to think so, as the history shows). Mind you, I have no intention of having someone blocked. I am going to put Ali and the other back in--but I will also revert this messing up of the formatting, combined with a "preview" notification template. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 14:49, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Re your message: The article has been restored by the editor, though this time with references. Some of the references are not very good, but it does seem that she is notable in some regard. The article is a mess though. I agree that the puffery is a little over the top. I suspect that this goes beyond a fan. Checking the photos uploaded for the article, the person is likely to be much closer than a fan such as a friend or PR agent. It appears to me to be somebody much closer than just an enthusiastic fan who happened to get into multiple award ceremonies. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 05:34, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • What to do, Gogo? It's like I spent all of yesterday rolling back things. That article is more than a little over the top, fluff-wise: some of the content is ridiculously unencyclopedic, and many of the references are 'references'--see this, for instance. Did you note they also got rid of the nice templated sources I added? Drmies (talk) 15:16, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Drmies, I am pleased to award you this MBE in recognition of your outstanding contributions to Wikipedia. Whether it's writing articles, fighting vandalism, or contributing in other ways, your work has been exemplary and has inspired me. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 10:09, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I had decided a long time ago to award this to you in commemoration of either your 100th DYK or my 100,000th edit. I was absolutely certain that your milestone would occur first, but you've kinda been slacking off lately in the DYK department!

Well, this is now a tradition, as I also awarded a long-overdue MBE to another user as my 50,000th edit. Anyways, you're very deserving of this! MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 10:09, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Mandarax, thank you so much for your kind and generous words. I promise you I'll get back to DYK (gotta get tenure first, and we just got a new puppy...). I'll say a toast to you and your own milestone (100,000--amazing) with an obscenely expensive beer tonight! Drmies (talk) 16:58, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, you did prompt me to see where 91-100 might come from. Ad Valvas is not one of them. I'm not quite sure what the gift was that I had in mind--but possibly you'd enjoy a tattoo? Hey, this puppy is funny. Not as funny as our almost two-year old, but pretty funny. It's nice to be a human. Oh, many moons ago you posted some statistic about which article we both had worked on. How did you do that? I ran into you again the other day, somewhere. Have a great day! Drmies (talk) 20:11, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I currently have my third DYK on the nomination page (or, as I like to call it, the Queue queue), and I know of at least four more that I intend to do some day. The MBE committee was very impressed with your 90 DYKs.

The Intersect Contribs tool was showing 798 pages which we've both edited, after my edit to Ad Valvas. Having watched Monk, I realize the value of even numbers, so I did two more minor edits to bring it up to an even 800. Yes, I know, Monk would've done 202 more, but I ain't Monk. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 21:01, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Drmies, I'd like to point out a tiny coincidence. Four months before I awarded you this MBE, you made two consecutive edits in which one edit summary mentioned an MBE and the other mentioned me. Did I say "coincidence"? No, it's evidence of your precognitive abilities. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 19:16, 2 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, but I read your comment the first time, and didn't think it very helpful. When something like that article comes along, with a lead and a number of references, on a topic that is obviously notable, don't propose speedy deletion unless you want to get slapped on the wrist by a reviewing administrator or a more seasoned editor. Happy trails. Drmies (talk) 18:22, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I don't know what state the article was in when Kudpung made his/her first comment, but any speedy tag now is likely just to irritate whoever goes to check it out. LadyofShalott 22:02, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

OK, what I see there is not deletable under any speedy criterion I can think of. The only possible one is recreation of an article from another language wiki, but there is the beginning of a translation along with an underconstruction tag. Granted, someone might tag it for speedy deletion, but that request should have been denied if it were made. LadyofShalott 23:21, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Awwww, thanks for the recognition. You may have meant this as a symbolic gesture, which is fine, as my tiny contributions are not worthy. But, for future reference, in case you're unaware of it, when adding someone whose contributions truly merit a DYK credit, you've got to add a {{DYKmake}} for them. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 22:55, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Mandarax, as I said, some small edits are really big. As for the template you kindly provided--I don't really know what it is or what to make of it! ;) (Seriously, clicking on it doesn't help either--that page explains nothing, and I've noticed, with many of those templates, a glaring lack of talk pages that might provide instructions.) Drmies (talk) 23:44, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
On behalf of myself and other gnomes, thank you for recognizing the value of small contributions. Yes, the template "documentation" does not appear to be very helpful. Fortunately it's added automatically when you add a new nomination with {{NewDYKnom}}. But to manually add creators/expanders, you'd add a *{{DYKmake|Article name|username}} for each user. If you look at a nomination, you'll see where it goes. Although they're commented out on the nomination page, they're uncommented when moved to Queue, and the bot uses them to actually give credits. Oh, my oldest daughter is pissed, since the dog likes to sit at my feet in the kitchen (waiting for bacon or chicken to drop, of course), and so she thinks the dog likes me more than her. Oh, and she has picked up every shoe in the house already. This sucks too--she has one of those hard plastic Disney slippers right now, that the kids like to walk around on: imagine the noise that makes on hardwood. Can you please explain why you removed this name] from Himara [[2]]? Also the edit summary sounds very weird (nothing to do with blp vio). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alexikoua (talkcontribs)

  • Of course it has everything to do with BLP violations. You can't claim someone is from somewhere, especially if that somewhere is contentious (the talk page proves that). Read up, at WP:BLP. There's nothing weird about my edit summary, unless you want to claim that your supermodel is dead. A Google search is not a reliable source, obviously, and rather than undo my edit and then place a fact tag there (and a reference to another WP article--but Wikipedia is not a source for Wikipedia), you should consider writing her article (if indeed she is notable), with references to reliable sources, and then adding her. Drmies (talk) 21:10, 27 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • YouTube is not a reliable source. If anything verifies something in the article, it should be brought in as a references, not just as a link with no information attached to it, but YouTube links usually don't count as references. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 13:44, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Friend, you are mistaken! I have just spent hours improving the page of my hometown, Borris-in-Ossory, Co. Laois, Ireland. My changes are not vandalism! I have uploaded graphics and built a new info-box. . . I'm very sad that all my work should go to waste! Please explain your reasons. . . if it is because of the missing licenses on the images, I'm just getting to that now. . . or at least I was, when everything went back to the way it had been on that page. I'm going to address the issues of licenses on the images, and then revert the page to the way I had it, and I hope that I won't have any problems once we sort this out. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ferntallstar (talkcontribs) 01:32, 3 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Is it possible for the creator of an article to delete their own work? If not, how do I go about having my articles wiped? Karen.watson.emap (talk) 13:57, 4 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Yes it is: see Template:Db-g7. The question is, though, whether you are the only significant contributor to the article. If not, it doesn't apply, and for some of the article you created or worked on it certainly doesn't apply. That's why I suggested bringing it up at the AfD discussion, since that's a likely place for administrators (who decide on those things) to run into your question. But in the meantime, don't mess around with those articles--it's confusing and it just aggravates other editors. Good luck. Drmies (talk) 13:59, 4 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Small wonder they get pissed. I don't know if I'm much of a boss, but if you want to call yourself a sucker, be my guest. Thanks. Dedmaan (talk) 19:22, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • OK, I see what happened. You are perfectly in your right to remove those messages, and I have reverted the last one, considering it disruptive. However, I urge you to communicate with them on their talk page in English, so that other editors can assess the situation if needs be. Good luck--I hope this blows over. Drop me a line if it doesn't. Drmies (talk) 19:29, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Dedmaan (talk) 20:03, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I too do not know much English, to freely express their thoughts. User waged war three times since the participants and regularly violated WP: NPA [6], once evenopenly trying to provoke me. I periodically rected here, and noticed that there edits party almost the same. For example in the article Jazz Fusion he regularly returned to his vision of the genre, despite the fact that other participants regularly return the old version. And as you can see above, he called my edits vandalism and insults without any argument. As well as a semi-outdoor style of communication in this replica [7]. Maybe I overdid things in vocabulary, but the user has deleting my text as "remove spam", so I returned it a few times. Replicas its course, I'm certainly not going to restore my edits, but still difficult to perceive when the user has 2 block for the outrages, continuing the same in other wiki. Then I try to use English, I apologize Mistery Spectre (talk) 21:31, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Spectre. What shall I say. First of all, if all of you at least try do to your business here in English, that will make it a lot easier. Spectre, I saw you posted some message(s) again and again and I can't judge what it is--if Dedmaan calls it spam, then he must not like it and he has a right to remove it. If you post it in English, and he is wrong and you are right, other editors will come to your defense. Dedmaan, I saw a couple of your edits--those changes to musical genres, if they are not verified by reference to reliable sources, they are often frowned upon and it is best to take that up on the talk page first.

So. Can we agree to English as much as possible and, more importantly, a. not call each other names too quickly and b. use the article talk pages? I'm serious--genre warring is one of the most irritating things on Wikipedia, and only good conversation and looking for consensus stands between us and a schoolyard brawl. Have a shot of vodka, drink it in peace, and let's get on with the project. Thanks to both of you for responding here. Drmies (talk) 22:03, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks that addressed the issue. I'm bad speak English, so I was afraid to make some serious errors. Mistery Spectre (talk) 22:23, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello sir, It took me forever how to figure out how to contact you. I'm not very good with wiki.

The reason I am contacting you today is to ask you for your help with my wiki page. From viewing your past edits I feel you have an excellent grasp on what you are doing here.

I noticed someone posted my facebook and twitter pages on wiki the other day and I'm happy they were removed, however I tried to add some articles containing me last night over my iphone and forgot to log in and it appears you removed them as well as some biographic information from my page.

To make a long story short, listeners of my shows created my wiki page and there were some major issues so one of the wiki people who knew what they were doing better than I ever will fixed my page and it has stayed virtually unchanged for many months until last night. I would like to get things back to where they were yesterday. Can you help me doing this.

I realize you were only doing what you felt was best but please sir help me out. Obi Wan Kanobi, you're my only hope.

Thank you for your time, I honestly mean that.

Thamike (talk) 12:01, 6 August 2010 (UTC)Mike Pilot (ThaMike)Reply

  • Hello Thamike, thanks for your note. If the version you mean, the one you're OK with, is this one, then I'm sorry--that simply cannot stand. There are way too many unencyclopedic things in there (that is trivial stuff, like loving tattoos, having been the "man of honor," and having a hearing-impaired intern, which simply shouldn't be in an encyclopedic article), and way too many unreferenced stuff. One of the core policies for the project is described in Wikipedia:Verifiability, and there isn't actually anything at all in the article that is verified by reference to reliable sources--look at basic facts, such as 3 million downloads, stated without any evidence at all. It may be that you or your fans are happy with that, but Wikipedia cannot be, especially not given the stringent requirements for biographies of living persons.

The current version already has plenty of problems--the complete absence of reliable sources, for starters. Google News usually offers reliable sources, but this search, for "Mike Pilot" and "Awful Show," produces nothing. Same with "mediocre show". Even Google searches on the web produce very little: [8] and [9] and [10]. In fact, I am placing a notability tag on the article, since I have doubts that the subject meets WP:N--that's harsh, perhaps, but according to our guidelines. So I'm sorry, I don't think I'm the one to help you here: if this were a candidate for deletion (I won't nominate it), I would not vote to keep it. Sorry, Drmies (talk) 17:32, 6 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • I have no idea what you're talking about, so I guess the answer is no. Drmies (talk) 20:54, 7 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • I did note that you took the opportunity to re-add a bunch of unverified trivialities (and some pure nonsense) to the article. A wrestler accusing another wrestler of raping a corpse, there's not much encyclopedic about that. You also managed to remove a perfectly well-sourced case, that of John Duncan, for which I found a reference in a book (those usually count as reliable sources. While you're at it, try to explain, if you can, how accidentally killing the woman you're having sex with is an act of necrophilia. You can't. So please refrain from adding those trivialities and incorrect details to this and other articles. Drmies (talk) 20:59, 7 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Dude I'm going to be honest I have no idea what you're talking about. I've only touched the Degrassi entry. If I somehow deleted them while updating the entry (which I doubt) then I apologize, and have no desire to trample another person's work (unless there is poor spelling and grammar). As I mentioned when I originally asked someone had threatened to vandalize the entry. They have gone on to say they took a few things down and the topic is blasphemous and they don't like seeing their "loves" tarnished in this light. The person is obviously a teeny bopper. This could also explain how the "Charlie St. Cloud" entry was removed -- although I personally don't see that entry as belonging in this topic, but it is not for me to judge. Have you been able to make your fixes? Jrfoldes (talk) 21:23, 7 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Drmies,

  • Yes, I did notice that, haha, it was hard to avoid. I looked through the entire list of recent edits and the discussion and decided to stay on the sidelines, but I did want to remove that tag. I think I put four sources there, and while one may quibble over one or the other, I think the point is proven (in fact, for me the point was obvious already...): there is plenty of discussion, and many do not hold to the 19th century dogmas on race. I don't mind that "truth" according to our NPOV policy lies entirely outside of Wikipedia. But I wish that editors could set their internal compasses to point towards it. I like the idea of truth as something one seeks, rather than an excuse for not having to justify one's own prejudices. Alas .... Slrubenstein | Talk 09:41, 10 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Carbon tax

Yes, I'm an environmental economist at UW in Seattle, and I've asked my students to each pick a country and update information about carbon pricing in that country. Hope that's okay, and FYI I'm pretty new to Wikipedia so if there's a better way to do this I hope you'll accept my apologies and give me some guidance. • Will do, thanks for the advice and kind offer to help. This class was narrowly focused on environmental economics, but next quarter I'm co-teaching a big-picture Introduction to Environmental Studies class, and I'm thinking of replacing the student paper assignment with an annotated bibliography plus a small Wikipedia contribution to a page of their choosing (solar power, biodiversity, carbon taxes, etc). If you have any specific advice I'm all ears, and of course I'll also take a look at the School Projects page you recommended. Many thanks! Yorambauman (talk) 13:25, 12 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Seeing as the original publication is long out of copyright, we really do not need to use a modern copyrighted cover in the article's infobox. J Milburn (talk) 15:04, 12 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • J, the best cover I could find is here--the original edition. Everything else I've seen are more recent editions. Any advice? Drmies (talk) 15:19, 12 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
    • I'd recommend uploading the original one- not only is it free, but I'd argue that it's more encyclopedic (and I believe we have a guideline on it somewhere... The template documentation notes "prefer 1st edition - where permitted"). It's not as nice to look at, but that's certainly not a reason to use non-free content. I've seen a lot of other articles on older works which do the same thing. J Milburn (talk) 15:29, 12 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Comment - You see if I was biased then I would have requested each one of those persons to vote specifically in favor of KEEP, however, if you will go through my message, I only asked them to comment on this specific nomination. In addition, why did I chose to write to these select few, is obvious that they are some of the individuals who work on Pashtun related topics frequently and are most probably well aware of the subject. I didn't want this nomination to get hanged as most of the genuine editors aren't aware of the subject so I was the one who listed this nomination on Pakistan related topics and I wanted the genuine editors to comment either way on this nomination. So with much respect I need to tell you that it had no bias included in it when I asked some of those gentlemen (whom by the way I have never communicated with earlier on). -- MARWAT  00:23, 13 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
On a second note I do stand corrected. I may have mildly asked the first 4 of the 7 editors to vote in favor but honestly that wasn't my intention and even if this happened then it was out of sheer frustration of repeated harassment by this one time editor. You may see that the last 3 of those seven genuine editors were only asked to vote. But your point is well taken and thanks. -- MARWAT  01:11, 13 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I encountered another of your creations while I was patrolling DYK. It was interesting to learn where Escher got his inspiration. But, it says that he "spent time in Ravello in the 1920". Should that be "in 1920", or "in the 1920s"? MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 05:58, 13 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sorry. I tried to do it myself, but one likely source was a book and the other was in Italian. I thought it was most probably "the 1920s", but "most probably" isn't good enough. Yes, I see--but even if McDonald, Barrett, and Chapman didn't simply invent that animal (out of a tooth!), then at least they were smoking something potent when they named it. You should know that people in "science" make stuff up all the time--I know of rat experts who invent entire species, genera, and capibara, not to mention their dissertations, out of supposed fragments of shards of supposed fossilized teeth. But hey, to each his own! All the best, and may your many ancestries always live in harmony. Drmies (talk) 02:07, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
It's quite common in paleoanthropology to declare a new species based upon one single tooth (fragment). While there are reasons for this, there are, of course, problems, too. If a species is highly sexually dimorphic, and all you have is a one male's molar and one molar from a female... you might think those are examples of separate species. I once fancied a future for myself in paleoanthropology. I suppose this may be one of the reasons I didn't end up pursuing that path. LadyofShalott 02:47, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Lady--what now? Teeth have genders? What next, they have sex? We'll end up in California, witnessing gay teeth getting married? This is going way too far, and I don't think the constitution allows for this. I'm glad, Lady, that you're into books. To all the young readers visiting this page, I say open up a book! Leave the dinosaur teeth alone! Drmies (talk) 02:50, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Books are good - they allow us either to learn how others have tried to classify bones into a coherent picture (and why they did it that way), or to escape to worlds that exist only in the minds of the author and those readers who choose to leave this one for a few hours. Incidentally, as an undergraduate in a physical anthropology class, I read a book I found fascinating. The author analysed various schemes that scientists had proposed for the evolution of humankind. The case she made was that all the schema fit the classic model of a hero tale, with Modern Man as the hero. Unfortunately, I have forgotten both the title and author name. I'm pretty sure it was a woman who wrote it, originally as a Harvard(?) doctoral dissertation. LadyofShalott 03:07, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Drmies, what shady backdoor allegations are those? I never invented a capybara! Ucucha 10:20, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, that was pointed out to me by someone in an edit summary. Pff. It's all the same--dead bone (and don't tell me that teeth aren't bone--that's semantics). I wish we could all live our lives based not on the fossilized past, but on the living tissue of poetry, on texts such as Gilgamesh. Hey, nice to hear from you, stateside, I assume. Drmies (talk) 15:22, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

The article of Ronald Koeman - improvement - verified facts.

edit

Dear Drmies. Reading the opinions of sport journalists, football trainers/experts, professional players and many football fans - and also - studying the career of Ronald Koeman and comparing him with other players - You can conclude that: 1) Ronald Koeman had powerful and accurate shots - especially from free kicks, penalties and from a long distance. 2) Ronald Koeman had accurate passes. 3) Ronald Koeman had very good vision (great reading of the game). This three features made him DISTINCTIVE and famous. It was his "trademark". This is very important to inform readers about these facts. The great request to Wikipedia's editors is to place these three facts in Koeman's article. Thank You in advance. Best greetings. Daniel - the football analyst and the player. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.191.150.227 (talk) 00:54, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Yeah, but you can't write an encyclopedic article in the tone of your edits. It's simply not neutral enough. Wikipedia articles should not praise, they should only report praise if that's relevant. And I know what Koeman was famous for--I've been watching him all my life. Thanks. You recently put on the Wikipedia page I made: Nicholas Anthony Ascioti that I did not cite the bio. So I cited the source, and got the message again. I don't know what I am doing wrong.

    • I apologize, I did not see the explanation. So unless if he had a professional biography done on him, then he can't have a bio? Anthony Guidetti (talk) 22:51, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
      • That's OK. But no, "professional," no. But Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and those work by way of secondary sources--which must be reliable, that is, independent of the subject. I'll post a template on your talk page with a couple of links; the link for reliable sources is already on your talk page, and another good page to look at is Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons, since that's what we're dealing with. If you want to save this article, look for those sources (which don't have to be online). Think of magazines and newspapers, professional and other reviews, etc. Try searching for your subject using Google, but then click on the "News" link on top of the page--many of those hits will have been published in reliable sources. Good luck, and drop me a line again if I can help. Drmies (talk) 00:50, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

    • That's too bad. I can't actually delete anything, I can only propose it, like I did. What can be done is for an administrator (someone with powers beyond belief) to move the article to what is called your user space, so you can keep it and continue to work on it. When you find the stuff you need, add it, and then move it back to the main space. Occasionally administrators walk by here, and one of them might could do that; I'll also leave a note on the talk page. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 03:34, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hey, there. Do you remember who I am? If you don't, take a look at my userpage. Anyway, I'm not expecting you to take sides, but I was wondering if you could put in your two cents here. Thanks in advance. - Donald Duck (talk) 03:45, 22 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, but I am not sure if you want me to. You acted incorrectly a number of times, including when you reported IP 69 for vandalism, and when you gave a vandalism warning to User:Tolgagurcan. If you want to get back in good graces with other editors, you should consider looking critically at some of your edits and warnings, and making amends for them. Saying "let bygones be bygones" is not useful if there is no acknowledgment of past mistakes. Sorry. Drmies (talk) 07:34, 22 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
It looks like my warning to User:Tolgagurcan was appropriate now, actually. - Donald Duck (talk) 16:59, 22 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Because they did something wrong after you accused them, incorrectly, of vandalism? It's precisely this sort of thing that irritates others--claiming, in the face of clear evidence to the contrary, that one did nothing wrong. Your talk page is living proof that your way of editing does not sit very well with a great many respected editors, including IP 69, Atama, and Uncle G. I mean, you incorrectly warn someone for vandalism, it's pointed out to you, and you say "This happened August 12th; there's no reason to bring it up now". That's nonsense. You said similar things at ANI--"it's a past mistake, no need to bring that up anymore." "Don't be so negative." No wonder your editing behavior was brought up at ANI; frankly, I'm somewhat surprised it wasn't done earlier. Drmies (talk) 19:48, 22 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
So we go from being sort of being enemies (when I was known as Eugene Krabs) to sort of friends (when I was known as Zhang He) to being sort of enemies again? I don't get people. Also, not all of my edits are bad. You're just looking at August 2010 on my talk page, so the situation appears bad. - Donald Duck (talk) 22:12, 22 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

<--You wanted me to look at the ANI report. I did. It reveals that you are often careless and accuse people of vandalism when they are not vandalizing. And then, when people rightfully call you on it, you complain. Wikipedia is not a schoolyard. If you can't handle criticism (when you invite it) you should find other things to do. I can tell you that I'm not your enemy etc., but honestly, we're not in middle school anymore. All the best. Drmies (talk) 01:58, 23 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Welcomes in sections

edit

Hiya,

Just wanted to ask, when you welcomed on User talk:NADA-TR, did you use a script or tool or something, or just manually edit?

The reason I ask is...lots of people get 'welcomed' that way, and it causes a problem, because the welcome is not in a section; it gets the user off to a bad start with their talk page, because they will think you don't need == Headings ==. We have lots of help requests from users when they have such welcomes, and... well, it gets messy. We're therefore forever changing '''Welcome''' to == Welcome ==

I'm trying to find out if it is simply people subst'ing the welcome template that causes it, or if there is some utility that causes it...so, please let me know. Thanks,  Chzz  ►  20:01, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm looking at some other examples, and...well, friendly does seem to add sections, as does Huggle [14] but WP:TWINKLE sometimes doesn't e.g. [15].
I will investigate further; but, for reference - it's best to use a section, when welcoming, if you don't mind. Some of the welcomes include one, and some don't, that's why it is confusing. So I suggest, if you don't mind, putting == Welcome == when you put {{subst:welcome}} in future.
Thanks a lot for getting back to me.  Chzz  ►  20:41, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Missouri State University System

edit

Just wanted to let you know that I created the Missouri State University System page. Hopefully this well make the enrollment figure tiff a moot point. Take a look at the talk page for more information, it's bizarrely complex issue. Anyway as long as the Springfield campus enrollment goes on the MSU page and the system enrollment goes on the system page it should clear up this "opening day" nonsense. Please stop reverting or let us request dispute settlement

edit

Please refrain from disruptive behavior, uncivility and discrimination. Knowing your brave heart ways, old friend, I fully expect you to delete this from your page. I am not trolling or being inappropriate, here is simply an argument. Your persistant and continuous return to one single article Kresimir Chris Kunej ever since its inception, after not one but two Afd's -following my hard work to improve the article in userspace and my complying with all Wiki rules- makes your activities disruptive to the project, and finds you in violation of WP:civil. I can do reverts of your tags all year, but I think it would be more productive to take this to some venue where mediation or dispute resolution takes place. So, please do requset this since I am not sure quite how to (do not wish to research this right now unless I have to). Thanks.Turqoise127 (talk) 18:29, 25 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Well, old friend, you should start with a vehement denial that it's you, and then continue with a brilliant explanation of how you know these intimate details about him, such as his place of work and what not--all the details that no verifiable source ever has been able to confirm. Oh, you should also explain how your accusation of my "discriminating" is factually correct, civil, and to the benefit of the project. Someone ought to slap an NPA template on your talk page.

In your case, I don't give a carrot for WP:CIVIL, since anyone who is not you can see how you have persistently badgered, wikilawyered, and whined about most every editor involved in the two AfDs, and that the article, far from "complying with all Wiki rules," is a bunch of unverified stuff, a resume in the form of a Wiki article. "Oh no! They used my text in a seminar in Tubingen in 2007!" Bravo.

Moreover, your concern for the "project" sounds a bit hollow: most of your 607 edits are to your own article, to the AfDs, to the wikilawyering in relation to your article--and there's a few to the AfD discussion for Boba Phat, of course. I think that you should be happy that you have your resume on Wikipedia, even if it is with a big fat COI tag. Happy days! Drmies (talk) 18:49, 25 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Ok, let me address what you ask. I know the place of work because when you Google “Chris Kunej” in quotes there are 2 results on first two pages about his workplace- state of Utah. One of the sites actually provides the public with state employee salaries. You could maybe use a quick lesson in search engines.
Better yet, your comments have shown you neither actually read the article nor attempted to look for sources per WP:before (and you nominated deletion twice). This, unarguably indicates discrimination, in addition to your sarcastic comment quite some time ago somewhere in talk pages about “being notable in Pakistan” so they must be notable on US Wiki (you were making fun of me after the article was deleted the first time). Sorry I don’t have a diff, I can get it if needed. Also, I think the NPA template could go both ways here. I feel saddened you do not give a carrot about WP:civil with me, I don’t think it is ok to be selective with our guidelines… being civil only to editors you agree with? The article itself is well sourced and you can not deny this, so I don’t understand your “bunch of unverifiable stuff” comment.
Regarding your passing judgement on my contributions; that is not fair. I contribute best I can and have made some worthwhile edits and opinions, I believe.
I believe I answered your querry here directly.
It boils down to the fact that you do not like me, the article, the subject and who knows what else; you nominated deletion twice, you keep placing tags, you argue and argue, keep coming back to it even after months pass. You nominated 2nd AfD like 1 day out of userfy. This is stalking. Again, you are in violation of WP:civil, WP:hound, WP:beating a dead horse, WP:NPA, and are displaying disruptive behavior. Thanks and have a good day.Turqoise127 (talk) 00:29, 26 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Turquoise: blah blah blah. I don't think I've ever met another editor here who is so verbose as you are. Your time would be better spend publishing something on Croatian translation. I've read your resume more times than I care to remember. As for stalking, look up what it is. I'm allowed to keep an eye on an article, especially if that someone is a disruptive user trying to get his resume published, bludgeoning other editors in the process. Your COI tag, one edit, and one edit alone proves that you are that "kid"--this one. Only through searching the database there could one find out that this non-notable kid has a non-notable job working as, what, an assistant database helpdesk person.

I have agreed in many ways with editors I have disagreed with, and I have remained civil with most of them. But people who wikilawyer to get their resume published, I got no respect for that. Especially if they remove COI tags without proving that they have no COI. You said before, "you know the kid"--that's reason enough. Besides, I have not forgotten how you speedied a couple of articles I produced: remember George Brown (scholar)? A real person, with real notability. Jealousy got the better of you there also, didn't it. You have yet to apologize for it, but I'm not holding my breath for it--you like playing the victim too much. Well, boo-hoo. Now stay away from my beautiful talk page; if you got something to say to me, bring me up on charges on any of the noticeboards, or send me a letter by carrier pigeon from Utah. Congratulations on this wonderful achievement! Thank you for your continuing contributions which have done so much to expand and improve Wikipedia. (And, personally, I was glad to see that number 100 was art, rather than bacon, related.) MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 18:36, 25 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I just wanted to let you know that I removed the section you added on my talk page. Looking at the history of the page, there is not a single edit from me there. - Donald Duck (talk) 16:44, 26 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Okay, then I'll undo my undo. At least that was a good revert there... - Donald Duck (talk) 17:27, 26 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Oh, it was excellent. And you don't have to undo anything if you don't want to, it was just a note. Did you see the discussion on WP:ANI? I thought it was useful and insightful. All the best, Drmies (talk) 18:48, 26 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
