\phi vs. \varphi

In TeX notation there is a difference between \phi and \varphi, i.e.

 

In the same time when Wikipedia renders \phi without using bitmaps, it shows \varphi instead of \phi, i.e. \phi shows as   and \varphi shows as  

Can this be avoided?
