iNaturalist page creation tool
editThe tool/script at iNaturalist for creating species pages on Wikipedia has a slight problem. It tries to fill out a speciesbox with parameters |parent=
and |taxon=
, with the name of the genus in |parent=
. |parent=
is only necessary on Wikipedia when a there is a rank between genus and species (e.g. subgenus, section). Speciesboxes with |parent=
as the genus aren't broken, but it is not how |parent=
is intended to be used here. I've brought this up a couple times at the iNaturalist forums, but it still hasn't been fixed. Plantdrew (talk) 23:02, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads up ! I do use the iNaturalist tool for a temporary template and then modify it to fit Wikipedia requirements in a sandbox. I'll make sure to use the species box correctly. I did see that discussion in the forums iNaturalist Edisstrange (talk) 23:08, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
Native Drone Fly
editHello @Edisstrange:, and welcome. You created Native Drone Fly. I can't find a reliable source for "Native Drone Fly": all I can see is "Description of the preimaginal stages of the golden native dronefly from Australia, Eristalinus punctulatus (Macquart, 1847)" ([1]) which I think is more a description than a common name, I'm not sure. So, please don't create redirects unless there's an authentic reason to do so (which there might be here, I'm not sure); please don't capitalise - if native drone fly is legitimate then it's "Native drone fly"; and please create hatnotes in accordance with WP:HATNOTE. eg using template {{redirect}} - hatnotes are only required to point the reader to an article other than the one they're at, and in this case there's no ambiguity. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 10:22, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
- it may colloquial as far as I can tell. and a shorter version of golden native drone fly. While initially hunting for data a lot of photos and text refferred to it as a native drone fly and then Eristalinus punctulatus in brackets. I dont have any documentation to prove it (can common names be proved ?) other than from the taxon bar https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/480131 where its referred as Native drone fly first and Eristalinus punctulatus in brackets (but I know I cant use inaturalist as a source, right?). So I thought I should cover my bases. apologies Edisstrange (talk) 11:04, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
