Re: Dome vs. Cavern

edit

I used the word "cavern" in describing the Pit because I felt it was a quick and easy way to explain to newcomers that it was underground, as opposed to being an above-ground structure. By stating upfront that it was underground, not as much time would have to be spent explaining how it could reasonably be flooded by the sea. "Dome" and "cavern" are both legitimate descriptions of the Pit, and while the first is more commonly used I felt the second was more descriptive in this case (and I did keep the word "dome" when it was used in the following paragraph). Re: BoM Mutants

edit

I removed the mutant Rahi from the BoM article because I didn't think they were notable, especially as Greg stated the BoM created almost all Rahi to begin with. Half of them (Kinloka, Rahkshi-Headed Serpent, Tarakava Nui, and Vatuka) were already covered in the Rahi article; and the rest were just wierd beasts for the Toa Metru to encounter as opposed to parts of big Brotherhood plots. I wouldn't mind if notes were made in the Rahi article (like adding a sentence under Tarakava: "A two-headed specimen was found and placed deep in the Archives" or something like that) but I don't think that the BoM article is quite the right place for that info. If you really think it does belong there, we can talk it over. Drakhan 23:32, 12 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hydraxon Image

edit

Greetings, ET. I think that the OoMN page should have a pic of Hydraxon in it by now, and I'm not very good with images. So if you have any experience with pics, do you think you could (legally) track down a pic of him for the page? I'm well aware that you might not be able to, but just in case I figured it might be a good idea to see if you could. ( And on a side note, I removed that image of the Toa Mahri because it doesn't have a copyright tag.) -- -- Gravitan 17:30, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

It wasn't until you said the "legally" that I grew concerned. I know exactly how to update images; I've done it plenty of times on BS01. Though they aren't strict there with iamge policy. I've uploaded one now (see Image:OoMNHydraxon.jpg), but I don't know any of the copyright info that should be there... ElectricTurahk 20:17, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Splendid, thanks ET. Though I'm not sure what we should do about the copyright info; you might try asking Drakhan, I think he would probably know. And thanks again for your help with that. :) -- -- Gravitan 21:20, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I assume this is from Lego Shop at Home (or at least, some other commercial site)? The first thing you'll need is a "promotional" tag, identifying the picture as being freely distributed to promote a product. All you have to type is {promotional} (though with two sets of curly brackets instead of one). Then put a link to the site where you found the image, and add a standard copyright line noting who the character legally belongs to - just copy and paste this: "© 2007 The LEGO Group. All rights reserved." Drakhan 00:19, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bionicle

edit

Hi -- just to let you know I removed your FA nomination of "Bionicle" from the Herne Bay nomination where you placed it. There were two problems -- first, it shouldn't go inside another nomination; it needs to use the featured article candidates template. Second, it should go at the top of the list.

I could add it back for you, but you might prefer to do so yourself, so I haven't done so yet. (Aside from anything else, Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by featured article nominations gives credit to the nominator, so you should get the credit.) The instructions are at the top of WP:FAC, and are fairly straightforward. Let me know if you have any trouble, or ask at WT:FAC if you prefer. Hope that helps. BL#7

edit

Greetings, ET. I think it would be wise to just let alone the BL#7 spoilers; Drakhan says that it would be best that way. If somebody removes the spoiler tags regarding that book, just let them be. As you probably know, I tried using future tags, but that didn't get anywhere, seeing as BL#7 is already out. The condition of the Bionicle pages these days is just plain depressing. We've had all of our spoiler tags and a lot of our images removed. But I really don't understand why they have to pick on us all of a sudden. Anyway, as I said, we should just give up on this whole spoiler thing; we are vastly outnumbered. -- -- Gravitan 11:26, 17 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hold on; I think we might have something here. On this page. If we can play this right, then we might just be able to get the tags back. -- -- Gravitan 11:41, 17 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Exactly! I suspect they managed to catch the majority of editors sleeping and blindside them. Who actually pays attention to the spoiler guidelines until someone tells them they did it wrong? It's pretty much assumed it hasn't changed because who bothers to check? then they wake up one day and notice "oh, removed per WP:SPOIL? huh, musta changed the guideline" and then go back to bed. ElectricTurahk, in many of your posts I've been noticing a tone of general disrespect towards others, sometimes including foul language. Please keep in mind that even if they disagree with us on things; we are trying to work with them, not against them. They're not trying to make life difficult for us, they're just trying to follow the rules and (particularly in the case of the pictures) keep their butts covered legally, and we need to respect that. Re:Block

I'm not happy with blocking those IPs - they looks like they're fairly dynamic. In other words, the user's IP seems to change regularly and there's no guarantee he'll go back to using an IP he's used before (but it may affect legitimate future users who "inherit" the IP address). Instead, I would be willing to semi-protect your userpage so that IPs and new accounts cannot edit it. Let me know if you'd like me to do that. WjBscribe 17:27, 22 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Why

edit

Can you tell me why every bionicle picture is being takin away all of a sudden?Swirlex 00:10, 27 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes the admins are a bit strange I see and understand why the images are being taken away.Swirlex 01:16, 27 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • EletricTurahk, I saw this and wanted to take the opportunity to comment.
  • Many companies produce imagery for various marketing campaigns. Simply because these images are part of advertising does not in any way mean they are in the public domain. Creators of original works have copyrights to the works they create. Even if they display the work, reproduce it, or distribute it they can and almost always do maintain their rights to the work. Else, the first time people sold a product they'd lose all rights to it and everyone would be free to copy it without cost.
  • As an aside, public domain images do not have to be used under terms of fair use. Fair use is a legal term in the United States, similar to the fair dealing concept in many other countries. It applies only to copyrighted works, and never to public domain works.
  • Wikipedia strives to have only free content. That means copyrighted content is discouraged in favor of free content. Even if the free content is of lesser quality, the free content will always be used. You might find this stupid, or any other negative word you wish to associate with that philosophy. However, this is a core philosophy of Wikipedia and will not change. We are a free content encyclopedia, and that will remain the case forever.
  • I hope this helps to explain. If you'd like assistance in understanding this further, please feel free to ask. Thanks, --Durin 14:41, 3 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Non-free use disputed for Image:DarkRiver.png

edit
  This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:DarkRiver.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted after seven days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 03:17, 6 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Translation request

edit

Hello!

You asked if anyone could translate the following: dorka ukko säkin oot Vittu säkin oot vaan yksi saatann tyhmä pelle ja luulet olevas jotain suurtaki, which is indeed Finnish slang of Helsinki region. The wording is somewhat unnatural, the clause has no punctuation and even as a straightforward transcription of the spoken Finnish, it includes a typo (saatann pro 'saatanan).

The literal translation is: "A stupid man, you are, too! Fuck! You are, too, just one of Satan's stupid clown and you think you're something big." A better translation would carry the meaning more completely.

Please do not consider this posting an insult. --MPorciusCato 18:48, 5 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Civility on List of ThunderClan Cats

edit

Hi, ET. I know that you are highly involved in the "The Warriors" project, but it is (IMO) not at all civil to leave, as an edit summary, "HELL FUCKING NO! Nowhere was this discussed. THINGS STAY AS IS. It's more organized this way anyways." Please don't bite someone for trying to be bold and fix an article whose scope has (again, IMO) gotten completely out of control. I've tried to encourage paring down the article through the in-universe tag, but I was quickly flooded with people accusing me of closed-mindedness and ignorance before the discussion ended without consequence and the tag removed. Either way, User:Minesweeper.007 seemed to be acting in good faith and should not be confronted with incivility for trying to improve the project. Thank you for your time, bwowen talkcontribs 23:48, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

And I already apologized to him for that. Yes, it was uncalled for, and I realize that - I acted without proper reasoning. And though, yes, he was bold, such a large move was not discussed at all, and I viewed it as an unnecessary change (I thought of it as similar to splitting the Akatsuki (Naruto) page into the original page and the members page... In the end, the pages were remerged. They were just better off on one page, in my opinion. And I vew that as being the same way here - for the Clans, page that is. Obviously, the character pages are a tad different, but to organize them by series would create a massive list.)
And, by the way, I've been thinking about that whole in-universe thing. Now, I think you're write in some respects... Methinks you (or we) should try again to fix it up a bit... With some civil discussion, of course. --~|ET|~(Talk|Contribs) 23:54, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Maxilos_and_Spinax.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use media which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Quadell (talk) (random) 13:46, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:DarkRiver.png)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:DarkRiver.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Toa (2nd nomination) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 07:15, 1 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pittsburgh event for Wikipedia's tenth anniversary

edit

Hi! Since you're listed as a Wikipedian in Pittsburgh, I wanted to invite you to the Wikipedia Tenth Anniversary celebrations we're having in Pittsburgh on Saturday, January 15. During the daytime, we're going to be having a photo contribution drive where anyone can bring in their digital photos or prints and Wikipedians will teach people how to upload them and add them to articles, and maybe introduction to Wikipedia workshops as well. Then in the evening, we'll have fun at the Carson City Saloon. There will be free Wikipedia t-shirts and other goodies, as well. See the Pittsburgh meetup page for more details. I hope to see you there!--ragesoss (talk) 15:10, 1 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
