Can we put a "bot" on Jason Gould's entry to immediately reverse any allegations that he is HIV positive?

edit

{{helpme}}

Greetings. There are persistent rumors that Jason Gould (Barbra Streisand's son) is HIV positive. These allegations periodically turn up in Mr. Gould's Wikipedia entry. These are sourced with not-so-reliable websites from the UK. I just reverted one.

Is it possible to set up a bot on Jason Gould's Wiki article that would immediately revert any future such entries? As a Wiki policy for a Biography of a Living Person, I think this is important. To the best of my knowledge, Jason Gould has never acknowledged that he is HIV positive. Even if the BLP policy does not specifically address that, I believe it is common sense and a matter of basic human decency.

Having an entry like that in Wikipedia would be irresponsible and potentially libelous. Barbra Streisand has the clout and wealth to take legal action, and this would bring about very negative publicity for Wikipedia. I love Wikipedia, and I want to protect its reputation.

Comments? Thank you very much. LA Movie Buff (talk) 17:28, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hiya.
I don't think that a bot would be appropriate - not sure though, so I'll leave this query open for now.
I did wonder about the funky new abuse filter, but apparently not - it says, "Filters are applied to all edits. Therefore, problematic changes that apply to a single page are likely not suitable for an abuse filter.".
I think that the norm for such issues is just for many people to watchlist the page... but I will ask around.
In the meantime, I'm leaving the helpme tag in-tact, in case others can add ideas etc.  Chzz  ►  17:40, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much. That's a wonderful idea to leave this "in-tact" so that others may analyze this. It could lead to the implementation of new Wiki policies that would improve it. Good call! LA Movie Buff (talk) 17:44, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

You might ask at Wikipedia:Bot requests if someone would be willing to do this. You will surely get more feedback from folks who are more familiar with bot policies and issues about whether and how to do this with a bot. Tim Pierce (talk) 17:55, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! LA Movie Buff (talk) 17:59, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I have removed helpme now;
For more help, you can either;
  • Leave a message on my own talk page; OR
  • Use a {{helpme}} - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put {{helpme}}, and ask your question - remember to 'sign' your name by putting ~~~~ at the end; OR
  • Talk to us live.
Best wishes,  Chzz  ►  19:23, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
P.S. Regarding the above - the problem with leaving the tag on is, it keeps popping up a message in the help channel to alert us that there is a user requiring help. Quite a few of us have our computers set up so that they beep or something when that happens, so...well, it would get pretty annoying if the helpme stayed in place when we couldn't do anything about it :-) The solution for things like that is, to enquire elsewhere - on the relevant talk board. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  20:23, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, you've all been very helpful. I am going to keep this info for future reference. As it stands, I think Jason Gould's article is safe with so many people watching it. I certainly am. Wikipedia is not a place for gossip based on rumors from unsubstantiated sources. LA Movie Buff (talk) 22:36, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

How do I create a new category? I want to create "Film Historians"

edit

{{helpme}}

How do I create a new category? I want to create "Film Historians". I can think of many existing Wikipedia entries to add to this category, including an article I created, Ronald Haver.

Others would include:

Many film journalists, biographers, critics, writers, etc., can also fit into this category, such as Roger Ebert, Peter Bogdanovich, Robert Osborne, etc. and other renowned celebrity biographers.

There are some more articles that I may write in the future about authors who would fit in this category, including Cobbett Steinberg and Rudy Behlmer.

Thanks! JGKlein (talk) 22:13, 3 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Just add articles to the category by putting in [[Category:Film historians]] in with the article's other categories, and then click on the redlink at the bottom of the page to give the category a description. -Jeremy (v^_^v Cardmaker) 22:48, 3 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

How do I nominate an article for deletion based on lack of notability, or suspected prank entry?

edit

{{helpme}} How do I nominate an article for deletion based on lack of notability, suspected prank entry or someone's practice entry which should have been done in the Wikipedia sandbox? I find no outside references of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_D._L._Williams as an actor, writer, or director. If it is a real person, this article needs references, because it is very vague.

The reason I think it might be a prank is that it says about an unknown person and him: "Their work would later be described as Quentin Tarantino meets the Coen brothers."

Thanks.JGKlein (talk) 17:12, 4 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've just deleted it under a large number of speedy deletion criteria - pages that are blatantly inappropriate like that will usually fit under one of those criteria and can be tagged for deletion using one of the speedy deletion tags (listed on the right side of that page). I have a picture of the outside of the New Amsterdam Theater in the Broadway theatre district of New York in 1985 before it was restored to its current magnificence. How do I add a "redirect" to the American Airlines Theater with a different spelling of the word "Theater" from "Selwyn Theater"?

How do I add a "redirect" to the American Airlines Theatre with a different spelling of the word "Theater", as in its original name, the "Selwyn Theater"? I propose a change in a redirect for "Sunset Towers" to "Sunset Tower" instead of to a novel "The Westing Game"

edit

{{helpme}}

Hello,

I propose a change in a redirect for Sunset Towers to Sunset Tower instead of to an article about a novel, The Westing Game. Even though the official name of of the building is Sunset Tower (singular), we here in Los Angeles often refer to it colloquially as "Sunset Towers". If someone types "Sunset Towers" into the Wikipedia search engine, they currently get a redirect for The Westing Game. As such, someone without knowledge of Los Angeles would certainly have difficulty locating the Wikipedia article for Sunset Tower.

Is it OK if I change the redirect for Sunset Towers to Sunset Tower? I think a redirect to the Wikipedia article about the building is more important than the novel.

In other words, do I have permission to do this without getting my hands slapped?  :)

Thanks! I Wikipedia. JGKlein (talk) 23:41, 2 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously. You must not copy and paste text from sources you find on the web into articles as you did in the article Portsmouth General Hospital (Virginia). I have removed the infringing text, but the material you copied is subject to copyright, as is almost everything on the web, and when creating or expanding articles, you should completely rewrite the information from the source using your own words. I love writing about them to provide accurate information for future historians." Your self-description largely applies to me, too. Most of my early work on Wikipedia four years ago focused on old-time radio. I maintain that interest, but as time went on I have worked on articles about older television programs and about actors and actresses from years past. Why does JGKlein redirect here? Are you the JGKlein with whom I collaborated in the past on Hawai'i articles, but under a different name? If so, I have a question for you. Or if not, what's going on? Awien (talk) 22:43, 5 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

The JGKlein I'm talking about contributed photos taken by his father in the 50s for articles such as Kaimū, Hawai'i. Awien (talk) 22:56, 5 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that's me! I changed my screen name. What did you want to ask? You can contact me by email if you don't want to post the question publicly here. Thanks! Cheers! Entertainment Buff 12:20, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
Oh, it's in no way a private matter. The French WP Kaimū article is using a photo of your father's captioned "Black Sand Beach, also known as Punaluu Beach, big island of Hawaii". I'm virtually certain it is in fact Kaimū, which until it was lost to lava was THE Black Sand Beach, but the mention of Punalu'u had the editors confused. Which is all a long way of asking if there's any way to confirm or correct the caption. Otherwise, I plan to simply remove the image. Cheers, Awien (talk) 13:59, 6 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
Maybe you can ask for help from a Wikipedia editor who speaks French? I'm glad they are using the picture, but I want them to caption it accurately. I'm sure Wikipedia has run into language translation confusion before. Can you send me a link to the French article? I would like to see it. Thanks. Entertainment Buff 15:50, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
I'm bilingual, that's not an issue, nor is it a language problem. The issue really is whether we can say with certainty what beach the photo shows. You, presumably following your father, identified the image as "Black Sand Beach, also known as Punaluu Beach, big island of Hawaii" when you uploaded it to Commons. The French editors went by that and captioned it "La plage de Punaluu en octobre 1959", and said in the text that Kaimū was also known as Punalu'u. That's flatly wrong, Kaimū was one black sand beach and Punalu'u is another, 50 miles away. I'm practically sure the mention of Punalu'u is just a slip of the tongue, but I'm trying to be sure before I do anything definitive. On French WP the article is simply Kaimū. Thanks, Awien (talk) 16:46, 6 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
I'm just completely and utterly confused. Would you please just tell me how you want me to retitle the caption of the photo? And I will do it. Thanks! Entertainment Buff 11:19, 7 October 2018 (UTC)

OK, bottom line: can you tell me with certainty whether the beach in the photo (the one under the heading Géographie in the French WP Kaimū article) is Kaimū or Punalu'u? Then we'll take it from there. Awien (talk) 13:05, 7 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

I don't know. My father took the picture decades ago, and I contributed it to Wikipedia. If it's going to cause a problem, just remove the picture from French Wikipedia. Thank you. Entertainment Buff 13:11, 7 October 2018 (UTC)
Oh well, I was hoping you would be able to confirm that the mention of Punalu'u when you uploaded it was just a slip of the tongue, but since you can't, I will indeed remove it from the article. I have no idea how to remove it from Commons. Thanks again, Awien (talk) 16:05, 7 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Paul Masterson (disambiguation)

edit

A tag has been placed on Paul Masterson (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G6 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an orphaned disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic); or
  • disambiguates no (zero) extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. --Animalparty! The Christmas Calendar (2017 film) moved to draftspace

edit

An article you recently created, The Christmas Calendar (2017 film), does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Your draft article, Draft:The Christmas Calendar (2017 film)

edit

Hello, Entertainment Buff. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "The Christmas Calendar".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. CptViraj (📧) 07:41, 26 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Custom signature fix needed

edit

Hi there! You have a custom signature set in your account preferences. Changes to Wikipedia's software have made your current custom signature invalid.

The problem: Your signature contains a syntax error or obsolete HTML tags.

The solutions: You can reset your signature to the default, you can fix your signature, or you can do nothing.

Solution 1: Reset your signature to the default:

  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
  3. Remove anything in the Signature: text box.
  4. Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page. (Do not click the red "Restore all default settings" button, which will reset all of your preference settings, not just the signature.)

Solution 2: Fix your custom signature:

  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Click the Learn more button next to the error to learn how to fix the error.
  3. Update your signature to fix the error.
  4. Click Save to update to your newly fixed signature.

Solution 3: Do nothing:

  1. In accordance with a recent request for comment, all invalid signatures will be changed to the default, which looks like "Example (talk)", one month from now.

If you have followed these instructions and still want help, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Signatures. Thank you! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 06:05, 2 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Need help on Wikidata - can't figure out how to use it.

edit

I am trying to figure out how to use Wikidata.org, but I am absolutely stumped. I want to learn how to use the codes to edit "External links" for actors in Wikipedia for Turner Classic Movies Database, Internet Movie Database, Internet Broadway Database, etc. but I just can't figure it out. And I don't know how to ask for help on Wikidata. Please point me in the right direction.

Also, as a suggestion, Wikidata needs to make finding help easier and more user friendly.

Thanks.

Entertainment Buff (talk) 04:51, 21 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately this is the English Wikipedia; you will have to ask about WikiData at WikiData itself, though we do have Wikipedia:Wikidata which might be helpful. Primefac (talk) 07:00, 21 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I have tried, but no response yet. That's what I mean about making it more user friendly.

By the way, I am confused as to what you mean by "English Wikipedia". English language or English country? Specifically, what do you mean? I don't understand. Thanks. Entertainment Buff (talk) 07:06, 21 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
