History
editWhat is meant by a "global minimum of B40-"? The term "global minimum" sounds like it means that this structure is the most stable allotrope of boron. Bullett00 (talk) 05:27, 18 December 2023 (UTC) Can the first sentence of the second paragraph of the history section be broken up? This sentence is a little hard to read. Bullett00 (talk) 05:31, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
- Global minimum refers to the lowest energy configuration of the B40- anion... The authors did use the term in their paper, but maybe I will link the term to the wiki article so people won't be confused.
- OK will break up the first sentence of second paragraph. Ephineprine (talk) 15:12, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
Structure
editI think "close-packed" refers specifically to a cubic or hexagonal crystal lattice. Would "tightly packed" serve the same purpose? Bullett00 (talk) 05:42, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hmm.... So close-packed is the term they use in the original Nat Chem paper, and it refers in this case to just hexagonal close packing in 2 dimensions https://byjus.com/chemistry/solid-packing/ Ephineprine (talk) 16:00, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
Can the images by reformatted so they are closer to the structure section? Bullett00 (talk) 06:02, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
I would remove "strongly" from "strongly delocalized over 5 boron atoms". Bullett00 (talk) 06:05, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
- No problemo Ephineprine (talk) 15:14, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
3rd paragraph: Are both the sheet-like and closed cage forms of B40 the borospherene? Bullett00 (talk) 06:05, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
- Yes - this paragraph was here in the stub article when I first started editing, but there are a few redundancies now since it seems like we're repeating the same info. I don't think I should remove the paragraph, but I'll edit it for clarity. Ephineprine (talk) 15:42, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
Because borospherene hasnt been isolated, I would specify what the photoelectron spectra are of. Is it the same transient species from the laser vaporization? Bullett00 (talk) 06:10, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
- Have added clarification that they were comparing simulated spectra from calculations of B40 isomers to experimental spectrum obtained from vaporising 10B-enriched disc target (in History section). Ephineprine (talk) 15:53, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
Less important, but due to the in-uniformity of the structure, does the cage still retain its D2d symmetry?Bullett00 (talk) 06:10, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry - is this in reference to the structure of borospherene after being singly reduced to the anion - if so, yes it retains its D2d structure. Have added clarification in section Ephineprine (talk) 15:54, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
Potential Applications
edit"Thermal stability up to 1000K" But it hasn't been synthesize? Bullett00 (talk) 06:42, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
- This is its calculated stability - have added clarification Ephineprine (talk) 15:55, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
References
editIs there a paper that references a structure that you could site instead of the news article in reference 6? Bullett00 (talk) 07:03, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
- Yes - structure bit also linked to the original Zhai Nat Chem paper, which more comprehensively describes it Ephineprine (talk) 15:57, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
