Wikipedia Campus Ambassador at Georgetown/GWU

Hi Epicadam, thanks for your interest in the Wikipedia Campus Ambassador role. More details about this role can be found at http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Campus_Ambassador. Here is also a little bit more information; in a nutshell:

The Campus Ambassadors are crucial components of the Wikipedia Public Policy Initiative. Volunteers in this position will be in charge of training and supporting the participating professors and students on Wikipedia-related skills, such as how to create new articles, how to add references, how to add images, etc. Campus Ambassadors will also help recruit other people on campus to contribute to Wikipedia articles, for example by setting up Wikipedia-related student groups and by organizing "Welcome to Wikipedia" social events. In general they will become known as Wikipedia experts on the university campus (in your case, on the Georgetown University or George Washington University campus). The estimated time commitment for this role is 3 to 5 hours a week, possibly slightly more at the very beginning and very end of the semester. The Wikimedia Foundation will hold a mandatory three-day training for all Campus Ambassadors in August, and will continue to stay in contact with and offer full support for the Campus Ambassadors throughout the academic semester.

If you are interested in being a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador at GWU or Georgetown University, I would like to send you the application form. What email address can I send this to? (Feel free to email me this info if you prefer: [email protected]).

Thanks. I look forward to hearing back from you soon!

Wikipedia:Pending changes/Straw poll on interim usage

Hi. As you recently commented in the straw poll regarding the ongoing usage and trial of Pending changes, this is to notify you that there is an interim straw poll with regard to keeping the tool switched on or switching it off while improvements are worked on and due for release on November 9, 2010. This new poll is only in regard to this issue and sets no precedent for any future usage. Your input on this issue is greatly appreciated. Off2riorob (talk) 23:33, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

DC and contributions

Greetings! Please excuse this intrusion on your talk page, and allow me to invite you to participate in the newly-formed Wikipedia Contribution Team (WP:CONTRIB for short)! The goal of the team is to attract more and better contributions to the English Wikipedia, as well as to help support the fundraising team in our financial and editing contribution goals. We have lots of stuff to work on, from minor and major page building, to WikiProject outreach, article improvement, donor relations, and more—in fact, part of our mission is to empower team members to make their own projects to support our mission. Some of our projects only take a few minutes to work on, while others can be large, multi-person tasks—whatever your interest level, we're glad to have you.

If this sounds interesting, please visit WP:CONTRIB and sign onto the team. Even if there does not appear to be anything that really speaks out as being work you'd like to do, I'd encourage you to join and follow the project anyway, as the type of work we'll be doing will certainly evolve and change over time. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me, or ask on the team talk page. Regards, DanRosenthal Wikipedia Contribution Team 03:00, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

As an aside, I'm also a local DC Wikimedian. We'd love for you to attend the next DC meetups. I'm specifically contacting you as you expressed interest in the Campus Ambassador position, and both the DC Wikimedians group and the Wikipedia Contributions Team have a lot of interest in working along with the Campus Ambassadors. You can reach me on my talk page, or by email at [email protected] with questions; I can't guarantee that I'll be checking back on your talk page often enough to hold a sustained conversation there. Regards, DanRosenthal Wikipedia Contribution Team 03:00, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Online Ambassador selection process

Please share you views on the current version of the proposed Online Ambassador selection process, which the steering committee has recommended for adoption by the ambassadors program. Once we settle on a selection process, we can start recruiting more Online Ambassadors for next term (in which we will have more students, and the students will be more involved with mentors from early on).--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 15:29, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

File:DCMontage3.jpg

I would post this on the talk page, but then no one would answer. I think that an image of the Rosslyn, Virginia skyline should be added to the montage to reflect a more urbanized city. After all, great cities have great skylines! --67.180.161.183(talk)00:33, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

its -v- it's

Let me be clear that I am not saying you are wrong, I know I probably am, but how is it that "it" does not have a possessive form? "It" in this case referring to Vermont, does in fact posses some area. [1] Beeblebrox (talk) 03:24, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi. I should have been clearer, "it" does have a possessive form, just without the apostrophe. Best, epicAdam(talk) 03:36, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
Just to extend a little on Adam's response. It's is a contraction of it is or it has. However, its is the possessive form. Here are some examples that can explain the rules for it's and its: It's snowing! It's been snowing like crazy! Its fur is covered with snow. I hope those examples help. - Zhou Yu (talk) 05:28, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
I understand the distinction, I guess I just don't understand why "it" is an exemption to the general rule of using apostrophes for the possessive form of a noun, but English is full of little contradictions like that. I'm sure some poor teacher tried to explain this to me 25 years ago. Beeblebrox (talk) 10:38, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

I have added District of Columbia to template:WPUS

Based on comments received from some of the editors who are still active in WikiProject DC I have added District of Columbia to {{WikiProject United States}}. I will start tagging the DC articles in the next couple days. The syntax of the template looks like this: {{WikiProject United States|class=|importance=|District of Columbia=yes}}. I don't remember if you commented on this or not but if you have any questions or comments please let me know. --Kumioko (talk) 20:17, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

WP District of Columbia in the Signpost

"WikiProject Report" would like to focus on WikiProject District of Columbia for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Also, if you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. -Mabeenot (talk) 02:53, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Photos from NW

Adam, I noticed today something that isn't a real issue, but it intrigued me: All of the photos we have on Washington, D.C. come from the NW quadrant, except for one of National Airport. Even the shots of the Capitol, are taken from that side of the building. I guess I noticed because I do try unofficially to spread out the geography of the images on the Virginia article. What would you think about replacing the C&O Canal with the Anacostia or the the Arboretum? And though I am sensitive to removing GWU, maybe H Street for Economy, with a blurb about revitalization efforts? I noticed the Demographics section lost its Chinatown archway, so that could be a place for a new image. What do you think?-- Patrick, oѺ 22:28, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Heyo. Yeah, I agree. The Basilica is in NE, but we could definitely use more photos. The Arboretum would be good choice and I'm not opposed to removing the GW picture (the gate isn't exactly the most appropriate picture anyway). What about Eastern Market? -epicAdam(talk) 03:12, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
Oh yea, Eastern Market would be even better, so I've gone ahead with that one. The images on the Commons of the Arboretum are good for the columns, but are actually lacking in views of trees or the river, so I'll see if Flickr has any licensed for use.-- Patrick, oѺ 16:18, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
If we can't find a good image from the National Arboretum, it's okay. Speaking of National Airport, I have no idea why there's even a picture of it; I replaced it with a photo of Union Station, which is also in NE. Now there are pictures of places in every quadrant (the National Museum of the American Indian is technically in SW!) Best, epicAdam(talk) 03:24, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
Good call with Union Station, though I replaced yours with an exterior shot, which I think is more iconic, especially with the vaulted metro image next to it. I also have added a SW image, of the Cherry Blossoms, to the Climate section. Though there's thousands of those to pick through, I couldn't quite find one with both the Jefferson and a good looking grove of trees. Likewise, if you do find an acceptable one of the Anacostia, feel free. Or even of the Rock Creek, like this one. Part of it is that the C&O isn't really a geographic feature. And while I'm here, I wanted to note that I edited an image to create a new little map and table over on Demographics of Washington, D.C. that might be an option for the Demographics section.-- Patrick, oѺ 00:25, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
Yes. I agree with the exterior shot... I was trying to find one but most on the Commons were not great. The Cherry Blossom picture is good, and so is the one of Rock Creek, either is an iconic D.C. image (pictures of a river are just kinda generic... like pictures of trees...). The race and ethnicity map is definitely interesting, but the data is from the 2000 Census. Once the 2010 data is out that will be very interesting. -epicAdam(talk) 16:33, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
Right, that's a problem that I noticed immediately with the race and ethnicity map. I'd been hoping to use maps from the more recent New York Times' study, like this one, but wasn't sure about their copyright status. I also don't like that that map and percentages below it come from data from different years. Hopefully new census data will fix that.-- Patrick, oѺ 16:22, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Wikimania 2012 DC bid

Wikimedia DC folks are putting together a bid to host the 2012 Wikimania (international) conference here in DC. We were wondering if you would be interested in helping in any way, or if the Historical Society would like to support us. We would want to arrange special guided / walking tours or other tourism opportunities around DC to make sure our out-of-town guests get to experience the city while here.

Also, the bid page needs more details filled in and polished about the sites in the city, transportation, etc. You did such an amazing job with the Washington, D.C. article so maybe you could help the bid page? We need to finalize the bid by March 22. Understand if you don't have the time, though. Cheers. --Aude (talk) 21:42, 17 February 2011 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

Hey Adam, This is a great page on Washington DC. I was wondering if you could give me some guidance on some DC resources. I'm a 12th grade teacher in DC and am writing my curriculum for DC history/government. I am looking for maps, pictures, and any other visual aids or interesting stories from the early days of the city. I am looking through the LOC archives and am trying to get in touch with folks at the City Museum but so far, no luck. Thanks so much. I can be reached at [email protected]. Ambassador Program: assessment drive

Even though it's been quiet on-wiki, the Wikipedia Ambassador Program has been busy over the last few months getting ready for the next term. We're heading toward over 80 classes in the US, across all disciplines. You'll see courses start popping up here, and this time we want to match one or more Online Ambassadors to each class based on interest or expertise in the subject matter. If you see a class that you're interested, please contact the professor and/or me; the sooner the Ambassadors and professors get in communication, the better things go. Look for more in the coming weeks about next term.

In the meantime, with a little help I've identified all the articles students did significant work on in the last term. Many of the articles have never been assessed, or have ratings that are out of date from before the students improved them. Please help assess them! Pick a class, or just a few articles, and give them a rating (and add a relevant WikiProject banner if there isn't one), and then update the list of articles.

Once we have updated assessments for all these articles, we can get a better idea of how quality varied from course to course, and which approaches to running Wikipedia assignments and managing courses are most effective.

Speedy deletion declined: Metropolitan Police Department

Hello Epicadam. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Metropolitan Police Department, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: This could be controversal, should send it through RM instead. Thank you. Courcelles 02:03, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
