Welcome to the second newsletter for the new Growth team!  

The Growth Team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.

Our plan for the next quarter is ready

After consulting with many communities on the best ways to increase retention, we will focus during the next 3 months on these projects:

• Understanding first day: to see what new editors do right after creating their accounts. We will be careful with user privacy, and we hope to share initial results in December.
• Personalized first day: this idea will also help us learn a lot about new editors by adding some optional questions to the new editor’s registration process. We hope to share initial results in December.
• Focus on help desk: we plan to invite or redirect people to the local help desks where they can ask questions to help them make their first edits. We hope to have an initial experiment running in December.

Thanks for creating re-direct pages like SIM10 (New York City bus) for the reorganized Staten Island express buses. Can you create a similar one for the new SIM9, too, if this would make it work in Template:NYC bus link? The template is currently producing SIM9 red-links in several articles. Interactive maps

@Castncoot: Unfortunately you can't actually link to one article's map from another page. However, for articles that already have interactive maps, the URL format would be something like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunter_Island_(Bronx)#/map/0 for the first map, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunter_Island_(Bronx)#/map/1 for the second map, etc. epicgenius (talk) 17:49, 20 October 2018 (UTC)

For example, how would one create interactive maps for Newark and Philadelphia? How do you find the particular ID code which corresponds to a particular city? Castncoot (talk) 19:10, 20 October 2018 (UTC)

@Castncoot: Now I get what you meant. There are multiple ways to do it.

• Here's one way:

1. First you have to create a map of the boundaries of the city.
2. Then you have to export it to KML format, open the code in a notepad, and copy it. (You can also open it in Google Earth and copy from there.)
3. Then you have to publish the KML on Wikipedia, Template:Attached KML/Philadelphia for instance.
4. Then you have to create a Wikidata item for this KML file. Or if it exists, add a link to Template:Attached KML/Philadelphia on English Wikipedia in the "Languages" section.
5. In the "Statements" section of the Wikidata item for the KML file. you would set "instance of" and then "Wikimedia KML".
6. Afterward you would go to the main Wikidata item for the city article. For Philadelphia the relevant link is Philadelphia (Q1345).
7. Under the "Statements" section of the Wikidata item for the city, you would set "Wikimedia KML" and then whatever the Wikidata item is for Template:Attached KML/Philadelphia.
8. Now you go back to Wikipedia and add the template {{Maplink}}. You have to set the |id= to the number of the Wikidata item for the city - that's the part in the URL that starts with the letter "Q" followed by a string of digits. For instance, {{maplink|frame=yes|id=Q1345|type=shape}} would show Philly's borders. This only works if you already created the KML file for the borders, and it's on Wikipedia, and the Wikipedia KML data is attached to a Wikidata item that indicates it's a Wikipedia KML. In this case, NYC works because its Wikidata item is connected to a Wikipedia KML. epicgenius (talk) 19:37, 20 October 2018 (UTC)

• A second solution is to draw the borders directly as JSON code, and add the raw code directly to the {{Maplink}} template using the |raw= parameter. Or you can use a subpage of Wikipedia:Map data, or you can add the code to a template.
• A third solution is to get the data from OpenStreetMap. For full details, you should read the documentation at Template:Maplink/doc, since it's really complex to explain. As shown on the right, Philly's borders are also displayed because it pulls from OpenStreetMap directly. (Well, probably. Station leads

Hi Epicgenius! I see that you've been changing station names in the lead sentences en masse. I have brought this issue up for discussion here and here, but I think a proper RFC needs to be made about this. I've never made one before, so maybe you could help me do that? @Daybeers: So it seems like this RFC occurred two years ago, and it was decided that the lead section should contain the station name, including "station" in bold, but without disambiguating terms. The relevant section at WP:USSTATION says, For example, the Culver City station article should begin: Culver City station is an elevated light rail station in the Los Angeles Metro Rail system in Culver City, California. Use of the article "the" preceding the station name is optional. As such, something like The Marble Hill station is a commuter rail stop... on the Marble Hill station article, for instance, would be fine, or at least that's what I'm assuming.

But if you do want to open your own RFC, you should create a new section at WT:USSTATION, and add the template {{subst:rfc|policy}} to the top, with whatever your question is. epicgenius (talk) 20:29, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

Invitation to New AI-Labelling Campaign for Newcomer Sessions

Hello, I'm reaching out to you because I saw that you signed up as a labelling volunteer at Wikipedia:Labels/Edit quality. I'm starting a new project that builds on Edit quality, to predict Newcomer quality. That is, to predict the damagingness and goodfaithness of "sessions" (multiple related edits) of users within 1 day of their registration. With this AI trained, we could help automatically distinguish betewen productive and unproductive new users. If you wouldn't mind taking a look at this new labelling campaign and label a few sessions I would be very grateful. In addition if you have any feedback or discover any bugs in the process I would appreciate that too.
