WikiCup 2022 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

• Epicgenius, a finalist last year, who led the field with 1906 points, gained from 32 GAs and 19 DYKs, all on the topic of New York buildings.
• AryKun, new to the contest, was second with 1588 points, having achieved 2 FAs, 11 GAs and various other submissions, mostly on the subject of birds.
• Bloom6132, a WikiCup veteran, was in third place with 682 points, garnered from 51 In the news items and several DYKs.
• GhostRiver was close behind with 679 points, gained from achieving 12 GAs, mostly on ice hockey players, and 35 GARs.
• Kavyansh.Singh was in fifth place with 551 points, with an FA, a FL, and many reviews.
• SounderBruce was next with 454 points, gained from an FA and various other submissions, mostly on United States highways.
• Ktin, another WikiCup veteran, was in seventh place with 412 points, mostly gained from In the news items.

These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. Thank you today for Singer Building, "about a building in Lower Manhattan, New York City, that was briefly the world's tallest building and later the tallest to be demolished peacefully. It was first constructed as two low-rise buildings in the late 1890s, which were combined and expanded in the 1900s. The building had an otherwise relatively uneventful existence until 1967, when it was torn down to make way for a larger and less architecturally distinguished structure. The interior was elaborately decorated, as was the facade, and the building in its heyday would have been considered quite innovative. Unfortunately, the Singer Building just didn't have enough space for modern office demands, so it was not preserved."! On the subject of "Fivefold"

I'm doing a rewrite of Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam.
My first major handful of edits begins here, but I recently sat down and started finishing the whole article a couple days ago. Question 1: does the fivefold rule mean the article has to be expanded within seven days, or that it has to be nominated for DYK within the seven days of when it achieves five times expansion?
Second question: per this revision, the article prose size (text only) is 7268 B (1211 words). Does this mean that in order to achieve fivefold I would need to make it 35000 B (6,000 words), or am I misinterpreting this somehow? I'm asking this because if I were to do so (it would also be impossible), it would be the size of my other article, Paper Mario. Panini! • 🥪 15:19, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

@Panini!, Answer 1: yes, the fivefold rule means the article has to be expanded in mainspace within 7 days. (I say in mainspace because the rule can technically be circumvented by writing a draft in userspace and not relocating it to mainspace until you have an article that's long enough.)

Answer 2: Yes, that means you would have to make it 35,000 bytes. The word count isn't a factor in the fivefold expansion, but prose character count is. You would have to improve it to GA status if expansion is not possible. – Epicgenius (talk) 15:27, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

Brooklyn Commons article update

Hi again, Epicgenius. Thank you for your help with the name change of the Brooklyn Commons article. There are a few more updates I would like to make to the page. To make things easier, I drafted a new version of the article at User:Tgreenidge/Brooklyn Commons Draft. In this draft I:

1. Moved all the notable tenants from the Location section to the final section of Notable tenants
2. Moved the first paragraph of the History section to its chronological place as the fourth paragraph of that section
3. Inserted the 2018 purchase of the property right before the mention of the 2022 renaming
4. Inserted some detail about cultural programming in the Brooklyn Commons Park section.

New York City question

I was wondering if you could help with this based on your articles. I wrote the article Lucy Feagin recently and the subject founded the Feagin School of Dramatic Art. A source I used for the Lucy Feagin article says that the school was located in the International Building (Rockefeller Center) on Fifth Ave. The Feagin School of Dramatic Art article says that it is located at 316 West 57th Street while linking to a source that says it was on Fifth Ave at the Rockefeller Center. Unless there are somehow two addresses, I'm not sure where the 316 West 57th St part came from. I wouldn't be able to answer such a question if it came up at DYK. @SL93, that is interesting, since both addresses were correct. Originally, the Feagin School of Dramatic Art was housed at 316 West 57th, as can be seen by these sources from 1933 and 1936. However, the Feagin School moved to the International Building in the late 1930s, as can be seen in Allen, Kelcey. "Amusements: Feagin School Students Performance Friday". Women’s Wear Daily. Growth Newsletter #20

Welcome to the twentieth newsletter from the Growth team!

The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in Wikimedia projects.

Suggested edits

As of February, 300,000 suggested edits have been completed since the feature was first deployed in December 2019.

Add a link is the team's first structured task, deployed in May 2021. It has improved outcomes for newcomers. The team is now working on a second iteration based on community feedback and data analysis. Improvements will include: improved algorithmic suggestions, guardrails to prevent too many similar links to be added, and clearer encouragement for users to continue making edits. After adding these improvements, we will deploy this task to more Wikipedias.

Add an image is the second structured task built by our team. It was deployed in November 2021 to four pilot Wikipedias. This is a more challenging task for newcomers. However, it adds more value to articles (so far, over 1,000 images have been added). We are currently learning from communities and from the data on what is working well and what needs improvements. The project page contains links to interactive prototypes. We are very interested to hear your thoughts on this idea as we build and test the early versions. We will soon deploy this task to more Wikipedias as a test.

"Add a link" and "Add an image" now both have a limitation on how many of these tasks newcomers can do per day. It is meant to discourage careless newcomers from making too many problematic edits.

Positive reinforcement

Over the last two years, the Growth team has focused on building suggested edits: easy tasks for newcomers to start with. We have learned with this experience that these tasks help many newcomers to make their first edits. Now, the team is starting a new project : "positive reinforcement". Its goal is to make newcomers proud of their editing and to make them want to come back for more of them. With the positive reinforcement project, we are considering three kinds of features:

• Impact stats: give newcomers the ability to see how many people read the articles they edit.
• Leveling up: encourage newcomers to progress from easier tasks to harder tasks.
• Personalized praise: encourage mentors and other editors to "thank" and award newcomers for good work.

This project is just beginning, and we hope for community thoughts on the direction. We know that things can wrong if we offer the wrong incentives to newcomers, so we want to be careful. Please visit the talk page to help guide the project!

News for mentors

• The mentor dashboard is available at all wikis. It helps mentors see who their mentees are and keep track of their activity. It is automatically activated where a list of mentors has been created. If you need assistance to create a list of mentors, please contact us.
• The mentor dashboard has a new module: settings. It is now possible for mentors to define their status (active or away). They can specify the volume of questions they want to receive, and they can claim mentees in an easier way. It is also possible for mentors to quit, which will automatically reassign their mentees to other mentors.
• We are working on an ability for a mentee to opt-out (and back in) to having a mentor.
• Previously, in the table that displays mentees activity, the filters displayed all mentees, even the ones with zero edits or lots of edits. We have changed this so that only mentees with between 1 and 500 edits are visible by default. Mentors can change this value in their filters.
• We are currently working on a special page for mentors to sign-up.

Some wikis have created userboxes that mentors can display on the user pages. If your wiki has one, please link it to Wikidata!

Scaling

Previously, at most Wikipedias, only 80% of newcomers were getting the Growth features. This was done for experimentation, to have a control group. We have changed this setting. Now 100% of new accounts at all Wikipedias get the Growth features (except a few, kept as test wikis). We invite communities to update their onboarding documentation and tutorials. Please include the Growth features in it. To help you, we have created an help page that can be translated and adapted to your wiki.

Queens Bus Redesign

@Kew Gardens 613, I considered preserving the old proposal as well. However, I think it may make the article too large. As it is, the article is already in Category:Pages where post-expand include size is exceeded, because there's so many templates that the reference list doesn't even show up anymore. Perhaps the page needs to be split - I'm thinking either History of bus routes in Queens or a dedicated article about the bus redesigns.
