Wikimania Interview?
editHi!
My name is Victor and I'm a storyteller and video producer for the Wikimedia Foundation. I'll be looking to capture stories about Wikimedians at Wikimania in London in a week. Here is an example of the kind of thing that I'm aiming to do. I saw that you're attending Wikimania and I was wondering if you might have some time to talk about what do you on Wikimedia projects. Anyway let me know if you are interested, I'll be at Wikimania from the 6th-10th of August and would need maybe 30 minutes of your time. I can answer any questions you may have. I’m best reached at vgrigas(at)wikimedia.org
Thanks!
Medical Translation Newsletter Aug./Sept. 2014
editMedical Translation Newsletter
Issue 2, Aug./Sept. 2014
by CFCF
During August we have translated Disease and it is now live in more than 60 different languages! To help us focus on African languages Rubric has donated a large number of articles in languages we haven't previously reached–so a shout out them, and Ian Henderson from Rubric who's joined us here at Wikipedia. We're very happy for our continued collaboration with both Rubric and Translators without Borders!
- Just some of our over 60 translations:
- New roles and guides!
At Wikimania there were so many enthusiastic people jumping at the chance to help out the Medical Translation Project, but unfortunately not all of them knew how to get started. That is why we've been spending considerable time writing and improving guides! They are finally live, and you can find them at our home-page!
- New sign up page!
We're proud to announce a new sign up page at WP:MTSIGNUP! The old page was getting cluttered and didn't allow you to speficy a role. The new page should be easier to sign up to, and easier to navigate so that we can reach you when you're needed!
- Style guides for translations
Translations are of both full articles and shorter articles continues. The process where short articles are chosen for translation hasn't been fully transparent. In the coming months we hope to have a first guide, so that anyone who writes medical or health articles knows how to get their articles to a standard where they can be translated! That's why we're currently working on medical good lede criteria! The idea is to have a similar peer review process to good article nominations, but only for ledes.
- Some more stats
- In July, 18 full article translations went live (WP:RTT), and an additional 6 simplified versions went live (WP:RTTS)!
- We have a number of new lead integrators into Dutch, Polish, Arabic and Bulgarian, with more to come in smaller languages! (Find them here old sign up page)
- We were mentioned in a Global Voices Online report by Subhashish Panigrahi at Doctors and translators are working together to bridge Wikipedia's medical language gap
- New medical professionals have started, dedicated to working in Odiya and Kinyarwanda!

Nutrition and pregnancy
editESH77 - I am a U.S.-located Wikipedia editor with an interest and expertise in nutrition. I came across Lalacloversky's edits to Nutrition and pregnancy. I suggested references to consider for the maternal diet and infant allergy concept, and rewrote the fish section. I hope this is considered being helpful rather than intrusive. שָׁלוֹם עֲלֵיכֶם David notMD (talk) 11:27, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
- Hi David, and nice to e-meet you. :) user:Lalacloversky is taking her first steps in editing medical-related topics in Wikipedia as part of an academic Wikipedia elective course at Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University that I'm leading. I'm sure she can learn from your editing experience and I'm happy for any help you can provide our students. If you have the time and willingness to be her guide while editing this article, would be great if you could give her specific feedback via the talk page about the changes you think are necessary, so she has a chance to correct it herself. That would expedite her understanding. Is that something you'd willing to try? Best, Shani Evenstein. (talk) 13:16, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
- Yes. On the topic of consumption of omega-3 while pregnant and effects on infant/child allergy I sent two references to her Talk, but not what I would have written. Is that the level of involvement you have in mind? Or perhaps at the article's Talk? David notMD (talk) 13:38, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
- Wonderful! In this case, I suggest that for the sake of better transparency, you should be corresponding in the article's talk page, so others can follow both her edits, as well as your example of guiding newcomers to the community. Sometimes things that seem obvious to veteran Wikipedians make absolutely no sense to someone who's new to our community, so having guides like you is such a great help. I'm sure she'll appreciate it. Thanks again for your good will! Best, Shani Evenstein. (talk) 13:56, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

Refugee Health in the United States
editHello! My name is Ashley, and I am a Junior at Rice. I am currently working on an article named "Refugee Health in the United States". Specifically, I added the sections under "Healthcare Barriers". I was wondering if you could give me any advice on reference formatting? I would also love any other suggestions as well! Thank you for your time. Atsang99 (talk) 01:12, 10 November 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for reaching out, Ashley, and welcome to Wikipedia! I'm afraid I'm not the best person to give you feedback in this case -- I'm not a doctor, not in the US and my home Wiki is Hebrew Wikipedia. However, I believe user:Doc James would be able to help. Invitation to take part in a survey about medical topics on Wikipedia
editDear fellow editor,
I am Piotr Konieczny, a sociologist of new media at Hanyang University (and User:Piotrus on Wikipedia). I would like to better understand Wikipedia's volunteers who edit medical topics, many associated with the WikiProject Medicine, and known to create some of the highest quality content on Wikipedia. I hope that the lessons I can learn from you that I will present to the academic audience will benefit both the WikiProject Medicine (improving your understanding of yourself and helping to promote it and attract new volunteers) and the wider world of medical volunteering and academia. Open access copy of the resulting research will be made available at WikiProject's Medicine upon the completion of the project.
All questions are optional. The survey is divided into 4 parts: 1 - Brief description of yourself; 2 - Questions about your volunteering; 3 - Questions about WikiProject Medicine and 4 - Questions about Wikipedia's coverage of medical topics.
Please note that by filling out this questionnaire, you consent to participate in this research. The survey is anonymous and all personal details relevant to your experience will be kept private and will not be transferred to any third party.
I appreciate your support of this research and thank you in advance for taking the time to participate and share your experiences! If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me at my Wikipedia user page or through my email listed on the survey page (or by Wikipedia email this user function).
The survey is accessible through the LINK HERE.

Wikipedia College collaboration
editHi Esh77, I have just run into an issue at the AfC and NPP and I learned from the trustee election that you were sort of a specialist in Education-Wikipedia collaborations.
A Boston College student wasn't able to get their draft reviewed in an unlucky way here and here and maybe we could think of something to smooth out the collaborations between the wikipedia community and editors from schools so editors who are supportive of a certain eduction wikipedia collaboration could take care of such drafts. I thought of a (hidden) category for school drafts, Boston college school drafts, Tel Aviv university drafts/articles etc. but maybe you have a better idea or something similar already exists.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 08:57, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, @Paradise Chronicle, and thanks for stopping by. :)
- I'm indeed heavily invested in EDUWiki collaborations for over a decade now. Most of the collaborations I run myself are not on English Wiki, but on Hebrew Wiki.
- The mechanism you are thinking about already exists through the wonderful work of the Wiki Education Foundation. They are supporting university students & faculty all over the US & Canada (and beyond). The best thing would be to collaborate with them on such initiatives, as they can offer different types of support and to both lecturers and students, including online training through their dashboard. Pinging @LiAnna (Wiki Ed) who can probably share more. Re categories, on Hebrew Wikipedia I've been using hidden categories for years. They are tied to a template indicating that a certain article was written in my classes, which allows me to track these articles over time. To my knowledge, WikiEd has similar templates placed on articles, and overall, they have very well established system that works well on English Wikipedia, which is why I believe they are better suited to assist you in this case. Let me know if there are any other questions you may have and I can help with. Best, Shani Evenstein. (talk) 07:08, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for your response. I guess in the present case the collaboration could have worked a bit better. Both articles of the Boston College project I've checked (Dagongmei and Miss Zhao's suicide) didn't have the hidden categories and their creators also didn't have much interaction with the Wikipedia community other than creating the articles. I'll reach out to LiAnna (Wiki Ed) to learn more about the process on the English wikipedia from her. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 08:31, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for your interest, and thanks for the ping, Shani! I'll reply on my talk page shortly. --LiAnna (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:05, 23 September 2022 (UTC)

@Paradise Chronicle: Shani (Esh77) is Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees. She hasn't replied to messages on this talk page for 5 years. According to her, the board is not concerned with Wikipedia encyclopedia issues, and she is not familiar with them. However, you might like to visit the page at: Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Coordination/2022 WMF letter and post about your concerns at WT:NPR. NPP and AfC collaborate with each other. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:56, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, @Kudpung.
- I am unsure why you allow yourself to reply on my behalf on my talk page, but I would kindly ask you to refrain from doing that, especially when what you write is inaccurate, and does not reflect my thoughts, approach, nor activities. You are clearly misinformed, so I'll assume good faith this time and reply to the things you have raised:
- The reason I did not reply on this talk page for 5 years is that there were not messages here that required my specific attention. While I follow EnWiki, this is not my home wiki. I also have another account as a Trustee, but most importantly, most people who want to connect with me usually do that via other channels.
- As per my work on the Board of Trustees, it is unrelated to my work as a volunteer in the Wikimedia movement, which I have continued doing while being a Trustee. It is unclear why you believe that Board is not concerned with Wikipedia issues, nor why you would think I am unfamiliar with our community's issues. Citation needed, as they say. I would say that I deeply care and am heavily involved in our global community (which I am part of) both as an individual volunteer (have been for over a decade now), as well as in my capacity as a Trustee.
- As a Trustee, it is exactly for this reason that I founded the Community Affairs Board Committee (CAC in short). You are welcome to join our next Open Conversation with Trustees, which will be this coming October, if you would like to learn more about what we do, the scope of our work etc.
- Does having the CAC means I, personally, can say "Yes" to every request coming from the community? No. It doesn't work like that. The Board is more involved in strategy than in operations, but the CAC has given us a platform to stay better connected and be more transparent about our work. It is a channel that community members can use to raise issues they feel are important and unattended. Does that mean that even if they're right we can act on it immediately? Probably not. It always require working with the WMF's CEO and senior staff to see what we can do when, and how to prioritize the needs of the whole movement.
- In short, we all care. Deeply. If you have any further questions, please feel free to raise them. Unlike what you suggested above, I have been consistent in replying when tagged.
- Shani Evenstein. (talk) 07:31, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- We know what the work is of the Board of Trustees - I have been around since 2006. I have already warmly congratulated you on your re-election to the board with a hope that you will guide the board towards engaging more with the work the volunteers do. Talk pages are public and everyone can answer posts on them and it is a standard practice. I checked the history of this page before posting here, and I thought I was providing Paradise Chronicle with an appropriate help considering his request specifically addresses concerns he has about NPP and AFC which I have been leading since 2011. You have stated yourself in at least two places - and very publicly - that the board is concerned only with:
I would say that the board's role is to guide the foundation in high levels strategic decision making with our global community and movement in general in mind. We are not involved in the day-to-day operations and not involved in particular workflows and decisions that are related to specific projects that are made by different communities.
Thanks. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 07:52, 22 September 2022 (UTC)- @Kudpung, well, in 2 sentences you made it sound like: 1) I am not responding to messages; 2) that the Board does not care about Wikipedia issues; and 3) that I have no knowledge of the community and what it's going through. None of these are true. And since it is not true, you might appreciate why it could be perceived as a tad aggressive to say these things on someone's talk page. So glad we cleared that one.
- As for how talk pages are working, I am sure by now you realize that I am a volunteer from the community, just like you, even though I also have a role in the BoT. So I am well aware of how talk pages are working. And as a veteran in this community, I am sure you can also appreciate that the appearance of facts (like me not writing in this talk page for 5 years), without the right context (that there were no messages for me to answer!), can be misleading.
- As for the quote you mentioned, I am on record saying it in various places, and I stand behind it. The whole Board does, as this is how Boards work. To be exact, it is the interpretation you offered of what I said that I do not agree with. This quote does not mean that "the board is concerned only with one thing. Again, there was a context to this quote, and when you take it out of its context, it is twisting what was said, or as Wordsworth once put it, you "murder to dissect".
- Lastly, I want to be very clear that there are no hard feelings here. I had to put the records straight, as this is a public talk page, and I can't have something not true written in it without responding. I understand where you were coming from. And I really appreciate everything you do for our movement. I even found out recently we have quite a lot of common interests. I also understand the issue of NPP is a burning issue that you'd do anything to push forward. But if you knew me better, you would have known that I already do whatever is within my power. That I care deeply about our community. That I'm already an alley. And that I am honestly here to help and not the one you need to push. So by all means -- push. I get that you need to do that. Just not like this... Hope you understand where I am coming from and that we can continue having productive discussions that will help improve our movement. All the best and Shana Tova from Israel, Shani Evenstein. (talk) 20:30, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
- I understand your concerns. I am also familiar with, and apreciate, your work on the BoT. There is no other way of parsing the five short sentences I offered, quite correctly, to Paradise Chronicle who incidentally has thanked me in another place, and in no way can it be considered an attack. Apart from drawing attention to your misplaced complaint about my posting on your talk page I have stated only facts, and I do think that your long defensive response here is somewhat more than needed. I sadly do not see it as a laurel leaf nor as a basis for a happy future collaboration. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 00:17, 25 September 2022 (UTC) I'll just add that I'm very quick to react and respond to anything anywhere on Wikipedia that concerns NPP or AfC. After all, I'm here to help. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:58, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Kudpung, not defensive at all; I was sharing my perspective, which I was hoping you'd appreciate. To clarify, I was not saying you did not state facts. I said the facts quoted lacked relevant, at times crucial context, and that without it, they could be misleading.
- These correspondences were all done in good faith (which is how I always try to operate), in the hopes of improving communications and offer more clarity. I am hoping it was also evident from our email correspondence. I do hope we can progress from here to the more important topics at hand. Shani Evenstein. (talk) 19:24, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
- PS: Apologies I am not as quick as you. It is the holidays season in Israel and my schedule is irregular and at time unpredictable. Shani Evenstein. (talk) 19:24, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
