WikiProject Classical music Rating

edit

{{helpme}} I am not sure how to get a rating from the project's quality scale for Borodin Scherzo page, please could you advise me on how to do it. --Etincelles (talk) 20:22, 16 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ciao, Etincelles. Anyone familiar with the criteria can rate a page, though of course you're encouraged not to assess your own work. There's no formal process for getting an assessment; sometimes editors monitor Category:Unassessed Classical music articles and clear it out when it gets full, but more often than not this doesn't happen, and pages only get assessed when editors come across their talkpages. You could try asking for an assessment at the project talkpage, or if you'd like to link the article you want assessed, I can assess it though I don't edit classical music articles. Regards,  Skomorokh  20:36, 16 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much for explaining that to me, I would be very grateful if you could assess the page. Thanks Again --Etincelles (talk) 20:50, 16 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi, please read my comments on the talk page of this article. If you need further guidance, I suggest you have a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Opera/Copyright guidelines. Many editors are at first unaware of the strict policies on Wikipedia concerning copyright infringement. But you really need to take this on board. If you've done something similar in other articles you've contributed to, you need to address this quickly. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 22:31, 23 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have tried to change the text as much as possible. I hope we can come to some sort of an agreement. --Etincelles (talk) 08:08, 24 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pasting in the text and then trying to "change it around" is not going to work. Either write the article entirely in your own words or use quote marks and clearly attribute the author (James Leonard) in the actual text of the article, although note that extensive quoting from a single copyright source is not permitted. I've re-edited the article and left you extensive guidance on the talk page. Please read it. It's not a question of us coming to an agreement. Wikipedia's copyright policy is non-negotiable. I'm telling you this for your own benefit. Wikipedia is really cracking down on copyright violations. Take a look at this page. I'd hate to see an enthusiastic and knowledgeable editor get into trouble. When editors are found to repeatedly infringe copyright, and disregard warnings, they seriously run the risk of blocking (not by me, I'm not an administrator) and having their edits reverted on sight. Don't let it happen to you. Best wishes, Voceditenore (talk) 08:59, 24 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please have a look at the page now. --Etincelles (talk) 10:24, 24 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've corrected the spelling and punctuation errors. I also put "miniature" in quotes, because that was the original author's characterisation and choice of words, not your own. It's now OK from a close paraphrasing point of view, but what you have now isn't well written. The phrase "gives a desired effect" doesn't mean "effective" and is virtually meaningless unless you previously indicate what Borodin's desired effect was. That's what's wrong with working from a pasted-in a text and then trying to 'fix' it rather than internalizing the ideas and writing them in your own words without the original text in front of you. You can easily end up distorting the intended meaning and run the continual risk of paraphrasing too closely. Anyhow, whether it's well-written or not is a separate issue for you and other content contributors to the article to work out. My job is done, so to speak.;-) Best, Voceditenore (talk) 11:47, 24 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Chopin's Mazurkas op. 17, 33 & 59

edit

Etincelles,

To satisfy copyright use, it is not enough to direct to the source, Allmusic or the Vancouver Chopin Society, you must put the copyrighted text between parentheses and, in the footnote, give the name of the author with house of publication or website. Also, replacing a word here & there within a copyrighted text is not satisfactory either. It is still "copying".

Regards, Frania W. (talk) 17:37, 26 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'd like to second Frania W.'s remarks. There are still substantial parts of this article with close paraphrasing. You really need to read and take on board the guidelines in WP:Close paraphrase. All you've done is slightly change a word or two and/or remove some intervening material. You also have unattributed quotes in the article, and have put words in quotes which are not exact quotes. Voceditenore (talk) 18:22, 26 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
I just read another one of Etincelles' articles & found the same copyright violation problem. This one is Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 19 "composed" out of Robert Cummings' article Hungarian Rhapsody, for piano No. 19 in D minor (after Ábrányi, Csárdás nobles), S. 244/19 (LW A132/19) at Allmusic website
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=42:361110,
Etincelles, before continuing on this path, please read Wikipedia article Plagiarism.
Were you to do such writing in "real" life, not wikilalaland, you'd be sued!
Until you or someone else remove the plagiarised portions of these articles, I am putting back the copyright violation template, which you removed.
Frania W. (talk) 18:44, 26 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Etincelles: following is what you wrote on my talk page RE Mazurkas Op. 33 (Chopin):

Etincelles, in my opinion, there is still a strong flavor of both Allmusic & the Vancouver Chopin Society in your text, as if you're playing with the words, either finding synonyms or moving them around in the text.

Mazurka in G-sharp minor, Op. 33, No. 1

All music: The first, marked Lento, has a lyrical, expressive melody line over a waltz pattern in the bass. The mood shifts effortlessly between mournful and hopeful, with a cherished and delicate intimacy.

VCS: A plaintive mazurka, less complex than many of the others. One of its themes is marked "appassionato," the only use of that marking in all of the mazurkas.

Your text: Mazurka in G-sharp minor, Op. 33, No. 1, the opening mazurka of the set, has a tempo marking of Lento. This mazurka has an emotional melody, accompanied in the left hand with a waltz pattern. The mood changes many times throughout the piece, and to good effect. This intimate piece is occasionally considered less complicated than many of Chopin's other mazurkas.[1][2]

Mazurka in D major, Op. 33, No. 2

Allmusic: The second Mazurka is a true Oberek, impetuous, fast, and with strong, irregular accents. The mood is joyous, with playful, comic tremolo figures. The coda is free and full of flurries.

VCS: A delightful specimen; bright, cheerful, and popular. Mazurka in D major, Op. 33, No. 2, the second of the set is one of the most popular mazurkas. It has a fast tempo and strong irregular accents.

Your text: Mazurka in D major, Op. 33, No. 2, the second of the set is one of the most popular mazurkas. It has a fast tempo and strong irregular accents.

The piece begins with the happy and joyful main theme, decorated with ornaments. After a second theme is introduced, the main theme is repeated for a second time. The mazurka concludes with a separate coda section that introduces a new theme.

An average performance of this mazurka lasts around 3 minutes.[1][2]

Mazurka in C major, Op. 33, No. 3

Allmusic: The third piece of the collection, marked Semplice, is truly a simple and innocent approach to the genre. The sweet, tender melodic line is supported by subtly accented second beats, keeping the flavor of the dance.

VCS: A heartfelt little piece demanding that unique Chopinesque rubato, which was so new, fragrant, and wayward in Chopin's own playing. Chopin was furious with Meyerbeer when the opera composer accused him of playing this piece in 4/4 instead of 3/4 time.

Your text: Mazurka in C major, Op. 33, No. 3, the third piece of the collection, has an expression marking of Semplice. This miniature is simple and warm, showing a different approach to the mazurka genre. Slightly accented second beats are used to keep the mazurka characteristics.[1][2]

Mazurka in B minor, Op. 33, No. 4

Allmusic: The final Mazurka adds rhythmic interest to the set, with the grace notes and trills bringing a rustic, native feel. The piece is written in rondo form, with several different characters appearing in the episodes between the recurring original theme.

VCS: Among the longest of the mazurkas, it was once a popular favorite. In dull hands the work can sound repetitious, as the first theme returns eight times. Schumann wrote of the Op. 33 set that Chopin's "forms seem to grow ever brighter and lighter."

Your text: Mazurka in B minor, Op. 33, No. 4, the final mazurka of the set, is one of the longest mazurkas at nearly 5 minutes, it was once a favourite of audiences. The piece is written in rondo form. The piece begins with a captivating main melody, decorated with grace notes and trills. This melody is repeated a total of eight times throughout the piece, between it different melodies appear but the main melody always returns.[1][2]

Etincelles: msg you left this day on my talk page:

":I have tried to remove copyright violations in all 3 pages you placed tags on. The tag you used says that the material has been copied and pasted, which is far from the case. If what I have done is still in violation of copyright, do you think its best to remove all the violating text.
Etincelles (talk) 11:19, 31 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

You may have removed (a phrase here & there) of copyrighted text, however, your text has now a strong flavor of plagiarism. Please read definition of plagiarism taken from wiki article Plagiarism:

Plagiarism, as defined in the 1995 Random House Compact Unabridged Dictionary, is the "use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work."[1]

Can't you simply write your own original text?

Covers in discographies

edit

Etincelles, I'm very sorry but album covers used in discographies as you are wanting to do are not permissible under our policies and guidelines on the use of fair use images on Wikipedia. Whether it's fair use or not isn't really the point. Wikipedia's policies and guidelines on this issue are more restrictive than the law permits. I refer you specifically to the very first point at Wikipedia:Non-free_content#Images_2, which says that "An album cover as part of a discography" is an unacceptable use of a non-free image. If you look at Category:Classical music discographies, you will note that not a single article within that category contains a non-free image, with the exception of one article, The Complete Mozart Edition, which is a single edition piece and not a discography in reality. There was one other, Stellenbosch University Choir discography, that had two non-free images on it both of which had been recently added by an inexperienced editor (less than 150 edits). I've corrected that error.

Please understand, the really is no wiggle room on this. I'm going to revert your re-addition of the album covers, and also tag all of the album cover images as orphaned. Per WP:NFCC, all non-free images must be in use on at least one article in order for them to remain on Wikipedia. Tagging these images as orphaned allows a seven day period in which the images might find some other home on Wikipedia, and is not cause for immediate speedy deletion.

If you think this is somehow in error, or believe that Vladimir Horowitz discography deserves some special exception from this policy, please take the matter up at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. Please, do not re-instate the images without gaining input from Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. If you have questions, ask. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 22:00, 3 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have nominated Vladimir Horowitz - The Complete Original Jacket Collection, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Vladimir Horowitz - The Complete Original Jacket Collection. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

I've done all I can on this page for the moment. I have also created a page for the Original Jacket Collection. This is arguably the most important series Sony/BMG has embarked on in the last decade, so I thought it deserved an article.THD3 (talk) 19:50, 9 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for all your help, the page looks amazing. I have nominated the Vladimir Horowitz discography for featured list status, is there many more albums to put in? Also, the reference forVladimir Horowitz, Solo Recordings 1930–1936 refers to the album as Solo Recordings 1928–1936, is this referenced to the correct album? Etincelles (talk) 21:23, 9 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
My mistake, I fixed it. The only major thing missing is Discovered Treasures, which came out in 1992. There are a few scattered items on minor labels, like Urania and Iron Needle, but these are rip-offs of material that is available elsewhere. [1]THD3 (talk) 21:53, 9 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

I've added in the new album, will you be able to finish of the work lists and correct the record label's? Etincelles (talk) 22:50, 9 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Not a problem. I wish Sony would quit changing their name, though.THD3 (talk) 21:08, 11 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
One other thing, on the featured list candidate page one user said that the introductory text was not long enough. Could this be expanded? Etincelles (talk) 21:11, 11 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'll see if I can impart some information without being too verbose.THD3 (talk) 14:48, 15 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Horowitz stairs photo

I found the date for that photo. It was taken on January 6, 1931, as Horowitz arrived on the RMS Majestic for his tour in America. [2] THD3 (talk) 13:07, 15 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I deleted a lot of information that was added by another editor, including the image you added, as it's out of scope for the article. The talk page has details.

On another matter, I see you're putting together a discography of Li Yundi. Believe it or not, I thought his name was Yundi Li until seeing the article. Have you thought about doing a discography for Arthur Rubinstein?THD3 (talk) 17:28, 22 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

If you are referring to the Carmen Variations image, then it was not me that added it. (I also thought it looked a bit unusual) Good idea about the Rubinstein discography, I will look into creating it.Etincelles (talk) 08:13, 25 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Arthur Rubinstein discography

edit

If you need any help with recordings dates, etc., I can help. I have the complete Rubinstein boxed set on RCA, which includes a book with recording dates.THD3 (talk) 13:54, 25 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

You really got the ball rolling on this page! I've added the remaining volumes of the collection, and begun adding work lists. This should be easier than it was with Horowitz because Rubinstein tended make more "edition" type recordings, e.g., Chopin Polonaises, Mazurkas, etc. I may have to pull some of these recordings and listen to them again. I admit I've cooled on Rubinstein over the years.THD3 (talk) 16:43, 29 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your help. I will add references for the albums you added and link the work lists. Etincelles (talk) 16:51, 29 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
On the worklists, I am using symbols (*, +, and ^) to clarify which performers are participating with Rubinstein in which pieces. Although the collection tries to present the compositions in a logical manner, there are sometimes multiple participants on one CD.THD3 (talk) 18:50, 30 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I added the worklist for Vol. 82. This 2 CD set was not released separately. It is only available as part of the boxed set. Not sure how to notate that in the article.THD3 (talk) 01:41, 31 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I added a few more details about Rubinstein's recording career, and added a link to the discography on Rubinstein's bio page. I just got a new digital camera, and will try to take a photo of the boxed set over the weekend.THD3 (talk) 18:17, 1 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

The Wagner article is in need of some help

edit

We're in a bit of a pickle in the Wagner discussion page. The issues concerns Social class (sociology) and the phrase supposedly common Germanic past and has now been dismissed by some editors as inconsequential. Furthermore, the name Other interpretations in the article dismisses the general review and broader Wagner analysis to a subcategory under Controversies (mainly the topic of anti-Semitism). Please help. Just take fast look and maybe help in the balancing act. Thank you

  • In his own era he furthermore provided the newly emerged middle class with a medium to transfer its familial and political conflicts into a myth of supposedly common Germanic past.
(In the introduction, removed as non consequential)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
