Questions for Eye Doc
editHi Eye Doc, I was reading the 'Prevention' section on Retinal Detachment and saw that you were one of the editors. I was wondering if you knew the source of :
"Early examination allows detection of retinal tears which can be treated with laser or cryotherapy. This reduces the risk of retinal detachment in those who have tears from around 1:3 to 1:20." ?
I'm trying to convince my health insurance company to not put me in the bottom tier since I took preventative actions. I would be interested to read the research as well. If you could email me at sigmadx@yahoo.com or post back here I would greatly appreciate it!

Sorry so long to reply, life took over for a while. 1:3 comes from the work of Norman Byer, who published extensively on posterior vitreous detachment, retinal tears and retinal detachment. 1:20 comes from various publications over the years looking at progression of retinal tears after treatment, and is possibly an overestimate of the risk. In any case, if you have had a PVD and survived 3 months as a rule one would not expect that eye to be at risk of a further problem (but eyes don't always obey the rules of course). On the other hand the fellow eye if it has not already had a PVD is at a higher risk of problems. EyeDoc (talk) 21:40, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

I wonder if you would consider supporting this article by voting for it at Wikipedia:Article Improvement Drive to improve it towards feature article status. I hope to increase the profile of clinical medicine and related subjects on wikipeda. The current article is basic, in particular with regards to EDs around the world--File Éireann 20:44, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
