Looking for Help
editOn the Buster Keaton page, at the bottom, there is a box that says his name and lists all his films. This box:
I went looking for how to find it and edit it since it lists the film "Love Nest On Wheels", yet the link doesn't go to Love Nest On Wheels, so I wanted to fix it.
This relates to my other problem, how do I search only the internal (help, editing) part of Wikipedia? I mean if I put in Buster Keaton into the search box, it won't show me the above box. Is there some way I can search for things like that? Right now I have to go to the help page and look at every list of every thing and try to find stuff. Is there some way to search the help stuff?
Thank you. Fanra 00:17, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
- Have a look at Template:Buster_Keaton. Links are case-sensitive, so the lower-case o in 'on Wheels' doesn't work.
The reason for why you didn't find that box, is because it is a template. To search for those, type Buster Keaton, press search and select templates only on the bottom of the result page, and then do a new search. To search within the help namespace, select help. :) Bjelleklang - talk Bug Me 00:25, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
Posada redoux
editF: Tue, however, the problems with the National Security Archive documents include that they are that they are selected by the archivists of this often militant organization; they are not original documents but those which have been selectively censored and it is not always clear if the sections blacked out include material other than censored by the source. Still if one keeps in mind those caveats these documents can be useful. I would prefer if the National Security Archive origens of the documents were mentioned... selective removal of material, in one socks (:)) is not unknown in US archives. However, this is better than the 70 year or so limitation of some European countries. Will try and insert names and origins of passengers on flight 455. Trying to track down a report that the Cuban government did not wish the plane's recovery when this was offered by the British Government. There may be far more to this than seems apparent at first sight. El Jigue208.65.188.149 22:53, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
F: Thank you: you make an excellent correction and a fine point considering that Chavez when calling Carlos, a well defined and very definite terrorist, a good friend is even better evidence of partiality. Very careless of me to rely on my memory, I will find reference on Chavez seeking the Jackal's release El Jigue208.65.188.149 15:56, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Terrorist = Freedom Fighter (Luis Posada Carriles)
editThe word TERRORIST is the same as FREEDOM FIGHTER, it just depends on who says it.. That is why I feel in the first line of the article it should say " terrorist/freedom fighter". Arafat was a terrorist to Israel yet to Arabs he is a freedom fighter.. What is the difference between Arafat and Posada? Are suicide bombers in Iraq terrorists or fredom fighters, because they want the US out of their country? Were Zionists freedom fighters or terrorists to the British in Israel? Again I say, one groups terrorist is another groups freedom fighter. The words are interchangeable. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Callelinea (talk • contribs) 05:39, 15 May 2007 (UTC).
Under strict Wikipedia rules, you're right. We can quibble about this. We can split hairs. We can turn this issue around and around and determine that a person who planted two time-bombs on an airplane, killing 73 innocent people, isn't exactly a terrorist, not quite. His actions may fall under some other designation. He might be a killer, for example, or a mass-murderer. He might be a militant, as some editors have suggested. Still, most people if they look without blinking would say he is a terrorist, and in the interest of fitting descriptive words to actions, "terrorist" is the first choice of semantics. User:Griot 23:00, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
- So you want to keep splitting hairs about this? Please go to the Carriles Talk page and try to define a terrorist. Griot 20:39, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
Glenn Beck
editYour edits, when taken as a whole, were so biased that it seemed necessary to revert the article. Your multiple incremental edits added up to quite a bit of bias, and were unacceptable from an NPOV perspective. Perhaps I should have taken the time to change only the offending edits, and at the same time, they constituted the majority of your edits. You will notice that your edits since my revert were not also reverted, as they were not biased, and did not violate Wikipedia's NPOV guidelines as your previous edits did.
That said, thank you for pointing out some etiquette with which I was unfamiliar, as I am pretty new here. I will strive to improve my etiquette, and at the same time, I kindly ask that you refrain from editing articles such as the Glenn Beck article in such a way as to twist the article into the expression of a narrow viewpoint. From what I know about Wikipedia, we are striving to provide accurate information, not cater to personal bias. Lawfamily 04:14, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
Fanra, your edits make it absolutely clear you are biased against Glenn Beck and/or what he communicates through his shows, but you are intelligent and calculated enough to go to reasonable lengths to disguise it. You did indeed censor the information about his ratings growth, and the fact that the ratings grew that much isn't senseless, you just don't want people to know about it. The sentence is indeed informative, you just don't want it there, so you make assertions that make it crystal clear that your concern isn't truth or clarity, but rather to supress information you dislike. That is censorship, like it or not. The only standards you are trying to "get the article up to" are your personal preferences, and thank goodness you don't own it, becuase your actions make it clear how you would treat it if you had any authority to abuse.Lawfamily 21:42, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
I just read your most recent edits, and they were, for the most part, acceptable. After your last outburst, I am not surprised you are attempting to appear less biased. You made a comment regarding truth, which is interesting. For somebody who I would guess is a university professor or a student, you certainly don't know much about English grammar. You claimed a quote was incorrect when I used ellipsis to shorten a quote for clarity. My using a truncated version of the quote was not incorrect, it was incomplete. Since you reverted my edit, and as I have nothing against the full context being displayed, I will let your reversion stand, but I expect you will in the future attempt to change or remove other quotes or information, as you have in the past, when you dislike the content, despite the fact that to a neutral party, the information would be appreciated and considered informative. The quotes I added contribute valuable context and summarize many of the points of the program, informing the reader while quoting as briefly as possible, and focusing exclusively on Glenn Beck's quotes. Lawfamily 22:02, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
Please proceed. As a French guy, I don't pretend to write English as good as a native speaker…

editFanra, I responded to your message re micromastia. I hope what I wrote explains the context of that medical terminology.Droliver 03:26, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
Hello! You had a number of concerns. Based on my experience in the industry and from reading for Wikipedia I tried to address them. Hope they help. Simesa 03:53, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
Hi. I actually did not delete the page, but only redirected it (though you are correct that I did not merge anything). Deletion involves removing a page's history from public view, whereas the page history of that article is still available. I realise that the page had been proposed for merging (in fact, I was the one who proposed it), but the content of the article (i.e., details about the book) was not suitable for inclusion in Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi. The latter article should be about the life of Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi rather than a detailed description of his books.
The reason I redirected the page, instead of simply leaving it as it was, is that the article does not prove the notability of its subject. Does the book perhaps meet criterion 5 of the notability guideline for books?
The book's author is so historically significant that any of his or her written works may be considered notable, even in the absence of secondary sources.
I looked for secondary sources about the book, but there seemed to be rather few. Most sources were either about human rights in Islam (not the book, but the concept) or simply presented the text of Maududi's book. As my initial search was limited to English-language results on Google, I will perform a more comprehensive search now, looking for information in databases of academic journal articles and also for German-, French-, and Spanish-language results. Perhaps an expanded search could turn up something. If it does, I'll incorporate the sources into the article. If it doesn't, we can proceed from there. Cheers, Black Falcon (Talk) 02:33, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
- Discussion on the merge is, of course, open as long as people still want to talk about it. When I redirected the page, I was not trying to impose a solution, but rather had simply not noticed the comments you had made at Talk:Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi as I had forgotten to watchlist the page. Had I known that you had objected to the idea of the merge, I would not have redirected the page without discussion ... I'm bold, but not reckless. :) Again, I will look for some sources that could be used to bolster the article and, if I find any, will add them. I will post a brief comment at that talk page shortly. Cheers, Black Falcon (Talk) 03:14, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
- I have rewritten the article, replacing the entirety of its content and incorporating three reliable secondary sources. I think the article is substantially improved (see the before and after). Your feeling that the book is notable turned out to be correct, so I'm glad that you reverted me. Cheers, Black Falcon (Talk) 06:33, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Stevegoodman albumcover.jpg)
editThanks for uploading Image:Stevegoodman albumcover.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 06:09, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
micromastia
editFanra, I would gently dispute that there is controversy over the term "micromastia" per se. After all, that word is really a grab bag of pathologies for hypoplasia. You're really equating micromastia with the unique American history surrounding cosmetic breast augmentation which is a different animal and really touched on more in the article on implants, and that is linked to in the micromastia entry. Wikipedia is nominally a world-view treatment of these things, which makes the particular American political hang-up over breasts out of place when you're dryly trying to present a non-partisan presentation of a medical descriptor.
cheers! RobDroliver 00:42, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

List of United States Government apologies
editA {{prod}} template has been added to the article List of United States Government apologies, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you endorse deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please tag it with {{db-author}}. User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 20:44, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Notlikeeveryoneelse_promo.jpg
editThanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Notlikeeveryoneelse_promo.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Image copyright problem with File:Dominant species pc game.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:Dominant species pc game.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
- That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. File source problem with File:Eml spectrometer.jpg
editThank you for uploading File:Eml spectrometer.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.
If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
ATTENTION: This is an automated, BOT-generated message. This bot DID NOT nominate your file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 03:00, 21 July 2016 (UTC)

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message
editThe article Goom's Hill has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Non-notable natural feature. Only trivial mentions and WP mirrors found when searching for sources. Fails WP:NFEATURE and WP:GEOLAND.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. WeirdNAnnoyed (talk) 23:18, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
