December 2021 GOCE Newsletter
editGuild of Copy Editors December 2021 Newsletter
Hello and welcome to the December GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since September 2021. Current and upcoming events
Election time: Our end-of-year election of coordinators opened for nominations on 1 December and will close on 15 December at 23:59 (UTC). Voting opens at 00:01 the following day and will continue until 31 December at 23:59, just before "Auld Lang Syne". Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here. December Blitz: We have scheduled a week-long copy-editing blitz for 12 to 18 December. Sign up now! Drive and Blitz reports
September Drive: Almost 400,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 27 people who signed up, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here. October Blitz: From 17 to 23 October, we copy edited articles tagged in May and June 2021 and requests. 8 participating editors completed 26 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. November Drive: Over 350,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 21 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here. Other news
It is with great sadness that we report the death on 19 November of Twofingered Typist, who was active with the Guild almost daily for the past several years. His contributions long exceeded the thresholds for the Guild's highest awards, and he had a hand in innumerable good and featured article promotions as a willing collaborator. Twofingered Typist also served as a Guild coordinator from July 2019 to June 2021. He is sorely missed by the Wikipedia community. Progress report: As of 30 November, GOCE copyeditors have completed 619 requests in 2021 and there were 51 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog stood at 946 articles tagged for copy-editing (see monthly progress graph above). Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis. To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

... when adding the tag {{WikiProject Star Trek}} please make sure to also include the importance parameter: {{WikiProject Star Trek |class=Stub |importance=Low }}. -- 109.76.204.243 (talk) 17:42, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks; sorry, I forgot about the importance parameter. I have added them to the list you provided. I will know for next time.--FeanorStar7 (talk) 17:46, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks.
- You might already be familiar with the page Wikipedia:WikiProject_Star_Trek and the table embedded on that page that summarizes the quality statistics of various Star Trek articles. I made a small effort a while back to push up the quality of various Stub and Start class articles where I could, and made sure there were no tagged articles that were missing the
importance
parameter. It would be nicer if that number of unassessed articles continued to stay low or at zero. Keeping it tidy as you go is easier than a big cleanup later and chance are I am not going to spend much/any time editing Star Trek articles ... at least not until the next pandemic. -- 109.76.204.243 (talk) 00:16, 20 January 2022 (UTC)- ok; thanks for the info and the update. I agree. Thanks for your patience. --FeanorStar7 (talk) 00:19, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
Poke[2] Poke[3] (I fixed the second one yesterday.)
Please try to remember to include the importance parameter. -- 109.77.197.59 (talk) 02:23, 4 June 2022 (UTC)
A cup of coffee for you!
editFor tirelessly cleaning up the categories, wikiproject tags, and other messes I leave on the articles I accept from AfC. It seems like I see you on my watchlist for every accepted article. I'm glad someone's doing it, because the category system baffles me utterly. Rusalkii (talk) 22:24, 24 December 2021 (UTC) |
- @User:Rusalkii: thanks. Glad I can help. yeah, I've had a lot of practice with categories and tags. --FeanorStar7 (talk) 22:35, 24 December 2021 (UTC)
Sorting query
editHi FeanorStar! Re this edit, are you doing some sort of mostly automated task? My understanding is that sorting should be by full name (WP:SORTKEY says Spell out abbreviations and characters used in place of words
). While it doesn't matter all that much, still, when I go to the effort to do it properly rather than just going with the sloppier title-derived version, it irks a little to have that version implemented anyways. Best, {{u|Sdkb}} talk 19:52, 30 December 2021 (UTC)
- @User talk:Sdkb : thanks for your message. I am mostly doing this manually and was actually aligning the sort key (defaultsort) with the article title: R. Nelson Smith. The link you mentioned doesn't actually talk about personal names (Mr. Bean is the title of a show); so I'm now not sure which is correct. I also looked at the talk page archive for the WP:Categorization and didn't find anything (I might have missed it). I have been following: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categorization_of_people#Sort_by_surname --FeanorStar7 (talk) 20:03, 30 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hmm, interesting, perhaps it's less settled than I assumed, then. That page has the example F. W. de Klerk
{{DEFAULTSORT:De Klerk, F. W.}}
, which goes against the passage I quoted above, so there may be some inconsistency. I'll post at WT:CAT to see if we can sort it out. Best, {{u|Sdkb}} talk 20:11, 30 December 2021 (UTC)- ok; thanks. I will keep an eye on the WT:CAT page. Thanks for asking.--FeanorStar7 (talk) 20:14, 30 December 2021 (UTC)

Reliability of LOC, VIAF, and similar for birth dates
editI don't believe these are considered reliable sources: Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_340#Is_VIAF_a_primary_or_self-published_source? (t · c) buidhe 18:02, 3 January 2022 (UTC)
- @buidhe: I think the LC authority records are more reliable than the VIAF records because the LC records cite sources in the 670 source cited fields. This can include publisher information, published material, internet resources, and email or phone calls with the author involved.
- See as an example (under sources):
- From what I can tell of the VIAF records I have seen, they don’t source the dates they give very much (at least for birth dates).
- cc: @AleatoryPonderings and @Only in death FeanorStar7 (talk) 21:24, 3 January 2022 (UTC)
- VIAF just aggregates info from its components AFAIK—it clusters authorities automatically without editorial input from humans. LC is only as good as the sources it cites and should probably be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. I've seen LC authorities that cite Ancestry.com and FamilySearch, both of which are not accepted at WP:RSP. I think the best approach is to track down the underlying data cited in LCCN and cite whatever that source is, so long as it's reliable. AleatoryPonderings (???) (!!!) 22:53, 3 January 2022 (UTC)
- Pretty much the same as above. The only real additional thing however is that while Ancestry.com isnt in itself reliable, a lot of the information sourced from it would be. Census records etc. So site those instead. Basically site the source of the info in the database when you can identify it, not the database itself. If you cant identify the source of the information, in almost all cases it would fail our usual tests for reliability. Only in death does duty end (talk) 09:54, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
- thanks to everyone for their input. I appreciate it. I will stop using LC and VIAF as a source for dates.--FeanorStar7 (talk) 12:06, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

The article you reviewed is being biased by new users
editHello Feanor Star, The page that has been created by me is being attempted to be deleted by new user on English Wikipedia for some reasons. The article was already reviewed and confirmed by you when it was created. It is enriched with information that is backed up with reliable sources. Nonetheless, now it is under a speedy deletion note. Can you please check that and remove that note if possible?

A. H. M. Shamsud Doha
editFor the purposes of being able to remove the {{uncategorized}} template from A. H. M. Shamsud Doha, template-transcluded stub categories are not sufficient, nor are hidden maintenance categories like Category:Possibly living people — a page is not properly categorized until it is in one or more content categories that are visible to the end user.
The problem is that every time you remove the template, the page pops back onto the uncategorized articles list again, with the result that I have to retag it again because that list can never be left in a permanently non-empty state. So, again, the rule is that stub templates and hidden maintenance categories do not render an article "categorized" for the purposes of being able to remove the template — a page is not "categorized" until it has at least one category declaration directly on it that is (a) not artificially transcluded by a maintenance template), and (b) actually visible to the end user in read mode. Bearcat (talk) 20:56, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Bearcat: thanks for the information and apologies for the extra work. Not my intention. I thought the stub category was visible to the end user in read mode. I will be more careful in the future. ---FeanorStar7 (talk) 21:11, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

New page patrol
editHi FeanorStar7. I've noticed you work on copy-editing/categorising/WP-tagging new articles a lot. Since you are looking at them anyway, would you consider joining new page patrol so you can mark them as "reviewed"? NPP is currently struggling with a large backlog and we could really benefit from the help of experienced, content-focused editors like yourself. Let me know if you're interested and I can assign you the NPP right. – Joe (talk) 10:15, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Joe Roe: Thanks for your message. I appreciate you thinking of me but don't think I am the right person for the new page patrol; I'm happier cleaning and tidying up articles after discussions have settled down. I have had times where I worked on certain articles and then within an hour they have been deleted, which defeats the purpose of the work I did on them. In these cases, there was no indication of problems (tags in the articles themselves would have helped); only after I looked at the history or the talk page did I realize why they were deleted. I hope this goes some ways to explain why I am declining. Thank you --FeanorStar7 (talk) 07:49, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

I don't quite understand why this person has been tagged as living when he has been dead for over 500 years? Belle Fast (talk) 14:08, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for catching that. I probably copied the wrong template. It's fixed now. --FeanorStar7 (talk) 16:05, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

editHi there. I've been going through the new pages queue and have noticed an inordinate number of ||more cats|| templates being tagged by you, including some on pages with four or five or more categories already listed. Please stop overtagging this tag, it is a pain in the ass having to go back and remove inapplicable tags. It's fine to use if there are one or two categories only — although SOFIXIT is a far and away preferred way to handle such things. Beyond that, please stop. Thanks. —tim /// Carrite (talk) 17:02, 14 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hello: I’ve only been adding the more cats template if there are only what I call vital categories [e.g. 1950 births] or categories like [People from x] and vital categories and no other significant categories [e.g. American journalists]; in two cases, I didn’t add the tag; in another case I did, but then someone else added more categories after I left the more cat tag…
- Example 1
- https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Frank_Erni_Dawkins&diff=next&oldid=1154035288
- I didn’t add the tag; but probably should have taken it out after I added the categories.
- Example 2
- https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jasmine_Gardosi&diff=prev&oldid=1153749161
- only three categories here at the time I edited it; Living people; Year of birth missing (living people) and People from Birmingham, West Midlands; I added the more cats tag on this one.
- followed by:
- that editor left the tag in place even after they added categories it seems.
- Example 3
- https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Carlos_Pineda_(politician)&diff=next&oldid=1154342897
- in this case, I didn’t add the tag; but again probably should have deleted it after I added the category and other stub category tag I did add; it would have been four categories.
- Also, because I couldn't find any documentation about what to do about the more cats tag after adding categories, I left it in. It sounds like that was a mistake. But please be aware that even if I worked on the article it doesn’t mean I added the tag; the page histories will bear this out; I’m pretty good about adding edit summaries. So to solve the problem, I won’t add the tag in the future; if I encounter pages tagged with it by other people or pages I think would need more categories, I will add more categories and take out the tag. I hope this will be satisfactory. Let me know. Thanks for alerting me to the issue. FeanorStar7 (talk) 17:47, 14 May 2023 (UTC)
Stopping by
editHi FeanorStar7, thanks for your edits on Robert Plunkett. That's one of those articles that I had almost forgotten about. My desire to get List of presidents of Georgetown University up to Featured Topic status stalled a while ago, one article short. I was thinking of trying to push it over the finish line again and your edits reminded me that Plunkett might be a good one, since it's short and comprehensive and (I think) in good shape. Would you have any interest in leaving a FAC review if I nominated that article? Ergo Sum 01:19, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Ergo Sum: thanks for your comment. I've never done an FAC review so am not sure what's involved. I'm happy to assist in other ways if that would be helpful. FeanorStar7 (talk) 01:22, 15 May 2023 (UTC)

Robert Fernley article
editHello. I noticed that you edited the Robert Fernley article. Thank you for your contribution.
I've noticed that there are two elements missing from his career. Since I'm not familiar with the process of adding them, could you please assist me in incorporating this information? I've included the relevant text and references below.
Thank you very much.
Fernley actively supported the National Centre for Motorsport Engineering (NCME) through the Fernley Foundation, collaborating to enhance graduates' qualifications in motorsport engineering and introducing apprenticeship schemes. He facilitated student involvement by loaning his 1981 Ensign N180B car, providing practical experience in operating a historic Formula 1 car. In recognition of his contributions, Fernley received an honorary doctorate from the NCME in 2019.

In 2022, Fernley spearheaded the Racing Star programme, promoting equal opportunities for aspiring racing drivers from diverse backgrounds. The programme included the Racing Star F4 Esports Competition, offering winners a pathway to secure a racing seat in Formula 4 and pursue professional racing careers.

- Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision, and feel free to post on the project talk page with questions.
- If patrolling new pages is something you'd be willing to help out with, please consider applying here.
Thank you for your consideration. We hope to see you around!

Help request for Draft:Kristen Harris (actress)
editGood morning from Campora San Giovanni, Calabria, I am writing to say hello and know how you are. In addition to this, to ask you for a small courtesy. Would you like to fix the page and make it a bit more encyclopaedic? I tried to create it, it seemed right that the actress too should have her "place in the sun", using an Italian expression. In any case, if I can do something for you, please ask, waiting to hear from you, I thank you in advance. Luigi Salvatore Vadacchino (talk) 01:54, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
