Naming convention (people)

Thank you for highlighting the naming conventions. I thought that was the correct naming conventions because these was what I saw for the past 10 months, except on only 1 instance 1-2 weeks' ago where Name (qualifier, born YYYY) was used and I even thought why such naming was used.

I created 3 (one on 17/2/2015 and 2 on 19/2/2015), the rest are due to Move/Rename by others.

If this is the standard, then it should be reminded to that person the very first time before it is repeated again and again.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited List of Hafiz, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Ahmed Ali. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Concerning the elusive image of the Supreme Leader

Heya Finnusertop, I was just curious if anything ever came of your efforts to secure a free-license image for Kim Jong-un. I rather suspect that you got no response (or an unuseful one) from Vice/HBO, but I thought I'd check in any event. Snow I take all complaints in the form of epic rap battles 01:03, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

That's right, I got no reply from HBO. Do you reckon I should try contacting VICE too? (though I think HBO owns the rights and VICE is just who shot the material) Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 09:37, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
Well it's really up to you and the amount you want to put yourself out on what might be a longshot. Personally, my thinking is that it can't hurt; if nothing else, VICE might be able to give you a clearer idea of who owns that particular content or might have other info we'd find useful in securing such an image (they did, after-all, film in the DPRK. I'd say you've already gone above and beyond on this, but I'll add that you'll become a renowned hero on that talk page if you actually do secure an image after all this time! Orphaned non-free image File:Shang Yue With the Century.jpg

⚠
Thanks for uploading File:Shang Yue With the Century.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Feedback on removed non-free img "File:RunningMan.jpg"

Hello Finnusertop, I saw that you had removed the image file mentioned above from List of Running Man episodes recently, with the reason 'No non-free image use rationale is supplied for this article.' stated. As I just joined Wikipedia this year, I'm not very familiar with image use rationale. I just did some reading and I would like to ask you something, since the image file has the FUR for Running Man (TV series) article, wouldn't it be automatically granted for List of Running Man episodes too since it's separated from the main article, or it doesn't work that way?

If it really doesn't work that way, could you let me know what can I do so that the image file can be allowed to use in the List of Running Man episodes again? Is it by adding another FUR under the image description by using the template provided in WP:NFURG?

Thanks. (Edward (talk) 07:51, 9 July 2015 (UTC))

Hi Edward. Wikipedia's image use policy is strict can be confusing. Even though I have some experience with it, I'm still no expert. Indeed, I removed the image out of prudence.
I've seen this play out many ways. Consider the following featured lists: List of Heroes episodes doesn't use any image. List of Lost episodes uses another kind of (free) image. List of 24 episodes uses the logo, but they don't need to worry about fair-use since the logo is a free image. Finally, List of Awake episodes does use a non-free logo and provides a rationale. I'd say it's an article by article decision and the correct question to ask is: is the image necessary for readers to identify what the list is about?
To answer your question specifically: articles don't automatically inherit a fair-use rationale by their relation. Each use of the image has to be given a separate rationale for. It's to ensure that each use is really necessary and just, and that proper thought is given to it. In this specific case, I'd say use of the Running Man logo can be justified in List of Running Man episodes. In this case, we'll have to do exactly what you suggested: add another FUR for the image by using the template. I've done this for you, and I've returned the image.
Thanks for letting me know you wanted to keep the image. It was an opportunity for me to do some reading and comparisons about it too. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 08:55, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
Hi Finnusertop, I learned new things again. Thanks for adding the additional FUR and also returning the image, although I thought I'll have the chance to try creating the template once I get your reply, but never mind though. And yes, my original intention to keep the image was to make the list easily identifiable for viewers. Thanks again, good day. (Edward (talk) 15:09, 9 July 2015 (UTC))

Laugh Track

Hi. I noticed you removed certain images that do not have proper non-free use rationale from the article laugh track. I would like to add the proper rationale but am not sure which template to use. I have seen this page WP:TAGS/FU but need further guidance. Please advise. Thanks!Oshabuh (talk) 19:34, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi, and thanks for taking image-use policy seriously! Looks like the Template:Non-free use rationale title-card adds some automatic rationales when the image is used to identify a TV show or similar in a main article of a show. Just use Template:Non-free use rationale for your own rationales for Laugh track. It uses slightly different parameters (eg | Purpose = in lieu of | Use =). Just copy and paste the rationales you've used (which look fine, you've done a good job) under the right parameters. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 19:51, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
You are welcome. I am trying to get past being afraid to ask other Wikipedians how to do the right thing. I did notice that the Template:Non-free use rationale title-card had automatic rationales that did not quite seem to fit with their use in the laugh track article. I will use the Template:Non-free use rationale and take it from there. Thank you for all your help. It is greatly appreciated.Oshabuh (talk) 20:17, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
No problem, it's my pleasure to help. Non-free content issues are complicated on Wikipedia. In this case, the purpose has to conform to contextual significance (WP:NFC#Meeting the contextual significance criterion). I don't want to say if it does or doesn't. However, you can take a look at some discussions at Wikipedia:Non-free content review - look for discussions on "WP:NFCC#8" in particular. If you want a definitive answer, you can go ahead and ask there. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 20:24, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
Will do. Thank for being a patient and good teacher. If the mood strikes you, please take a look at the rationale I added to the photos for the article and let me know if they suffice. Thank you again, Finnusertop. Oshabuh (talk) 15:47, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
Obviously, a rationale is better than no rationale and that was my specific concern here and now it's fixed. Someone could raise objections if they don't think the rationale suffices. It's always a case-per-case decision and needs to balance several points of view. For my part, and for now, I'm happy with what you've done. Thanks again! @Finnusertop: Sorry to bother you again! I just spoke to Dan and he noticed another small error in his article, if you have time. It says that he was at International Alert from December 2013 to September 2015. It should say December 2003 to August 2015. I'm not sure what sources I could use to verify this (other than his personal employment records) and I don't feel that it's such a big deal, but he thought it was important that those dates were correct. Is this something than can be amended or do I need to find an external source to confirm?

Removal of images.

The images that you removed are of Nobel Prize winners — individuals that happen to be THE most well-known alumni of the School. It is not unreasonable to argue that inclusion of their images are indeed highly beneficial and helpful in the understanding of GS, since GS is often known and cited for having produced these alumni. I have included these images in the same way that many other pages have utilized them — just like how images of Carl Sagan, E.B. White, and other famous alumni are displayed on the Cornell University page; just like how images of FDR and Teddy Roosevelt are displayed on the Columbia University page; just like how an image of William Carlos Williams is displayed on the UPenn page (need I go on?) You are clearly being unreasonable and being needlessly strict about an issue that is of little harm to anyone. If JD Salinger’s image on the page bothers you, feel free to remove it, but I don’t see any reason to exclude the images of GS's most well-known NOBEL PRIZE WINNING alumni from the page. To revert such inclusions simply by suggesting that "no rationale" exists is frankly offensive. Please try to be a little more considerate in the future; I have removed the image of JD Salinger. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Veritaslux1776 (talkcontribs) 20:21, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi, Veritaslux1776. Did you read the message I posted on your talk page? In it, I explain the reasons behind my actions. Among the things I explained is what "no rationale" means in the context of fair-use claims; it's a specific template message that must be included on the image description page for each use. Go to File:JD_Salinger.jpg and you'll find only one rationale posted: for the article J.D. Salinger. Neither I (nor the policy for that matter) intends to say that the lack of a declared rationale means that there are no good reasons for including the images and I certainly don't intend to offend. What the policy ensures is that there needs to be sufficiently stressing reasons to use the image so that its inclusion is absolutely necessary. This limitation by its nature is very strict. I still don't think we can use the images in the article. Please read the appropriate policy with care: Wikipedia:Non-free content. If you still disagree, you may pursue you claim at Wikipedia:Non-free content review. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 20:40, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

Image formats

Hi, thank you for uploading some images to Wikipedia. Here's a tip: Use the right image format for the kind of image. As a general rule, this is JPEG for photographs, and PNG for most other kinds of images. Using the wrong format can bloat the file size and/or degrade the quality of the image. Most modern graphics applications will give you the choice between these formats among others. See also Wikipedia:Image use policy#Format. Good luck. — Smjg (talk) 20:55, 11 October 2015 (UTC)

Request your support

Hey Finn, I am intending to make a request for administrator user and wanted to ask if I could have your support? Thanks! David Condrey log talk 04:52, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi David Condrey! I'll certainly take a look at your application and comment on it if you file an RfA. I don't know if I'd support the request yet - it all depends on how you'll present your case. I certainly remember our past collaborations with joy and pride - and it's an important matter because I've seen RfAs being opposed on the grounds of not having experience in that area. It's great that you're a pending changes reviewer; this should help. My hunch is that you have enough years of editing but that the relatively low number of edits (some 4,000) could be a cause of concern. The biggest problem is that you were blocked on Commons, and that was not such a long time ago. It's something they won't take lightly. It's particularly problematic because it involved mass nomination of files for administration action (deletion), and adminship would allow you to make such actions here on Wikipedia directly, without having to nominate. You'll need to make a strong case of prudence and familiarity with policy. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 05:16, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

[Yu Yeon Kim]

You have repeatedly altered the entry title for the curator, Yu Yeon Kim, to Kim Yu-yeon. The curator uses the form, "Yu Yeon Kim" professionally and in all publications and exhibitions that she has authored and curated. Please either revert your edit or desist from further revisions. Because you found one erroneous reference to a "Kim Yu-yeon" in the Korea Herald does not warrant you changing the form of someone's name. If you check the curator's website - referenced on the wiki - you will see the form she uses and by which she is known internationally. Thank you for your cooperation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sappo (talkcontribs) 17:46, 18 October 2015 (UTC)

Hello, Sappo. I have not edited the article on Kim Yu-yeon/Yu Yeon Kim. Perhaps your message was meant for somebody else? Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 17:54, 18 October 2015 (UTC)

My apologies. I saw your proposal and that the name had already been moved to this form without checking the history of the article. I see that the last move from Yu Yeon Kim to "Kim Yu-yeon" was done by user Tokyogirl79. I am not able to undo this recent move. Is there a way it can be reverted to the form by which the curator is known internationally and in all authored texts - i.e. "Yu Yeon Kim" and to protect this from further revisions? Sappo (talk) 18:13, 18 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi again, Sappo. I'd advise you to discuss the issue on the article talk page to see what other users think. I'll take a look at all the sources I can find and participate in the discussion. If most sources identify her as "Yu Yeon Kim" like you say, it's the common name and we should use it. If the decision is made to move it back, it's technically possible by deleting the redirect at Yu Yeon Kim that is currently blocking the move. Page move protection, on the other hand, is an extreme move and should be done only if things are getting out of hands. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 18:26, 18 October 2015 (UTC)

I have made a request on the talk page of the article for the name to be reverted to its original and the established form, "Yu Yeon Kim". I thank you for your advice and support in this matter. Sappo (talk) 19:22, 18 October 2015 (UTC)

Article upgrade assistance request (Pre-translation stage)

Seasons Greetings,

This is in reference to a relatively new umbrella article on en-wikipedia named Ceremonial pole. Ceremonial pole is a human tradition since ancient times; either existed in past at some point of time, or still exists in some cultures across global continents from north to south & from east to west. Ceremonial poles are used to symbolize a variety of concepts in several different world cultures.

Through article Ceremonial pole we intend to take encyclopedic note of cultural aspects and festive celebrations around Ceremonial pole as an umbrella article and want to have historical, mythological, anthropological aspects, reverence or worships wherever concerned as a small part.

While Ceremonial poles have a long past and strong presence but usually less discussed subject. Even before we seek translation of this article in global languages, we need to have more encyclopedic information/input about Ceremonial poles from all global cultures and languages. And we seek your assistance in the same.

Since other contributors to the article are insisting for reliable sources and Standard native english; If your contributions get deleted (for some reason like linguistics or may be your information is reliable but unfortunately dosent match expectations of other editors) , please do list the same on Talk:Ceremonial pole page so that other wikipedians may help improve by interlanguage collaborations, and/or some other language wikipedias may be interested in giving more importance to reliablity of information over other factors on their respective wikipedia.

This particular request is being made to you since your user name is listed in Wikipedia:Translators available list.

Thanking you with warm regards Mahitgar (talk) 05:34, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

Image rationales

Hey there, while I appreciate your desire to enforce non-free image policy, you seem to be removing images from articles which DO have rationales for each individual use. FYI, the rationales must be noted for each article, but do NOT need to be in separate FUR templates (though that would be nice). Your edits to articles like Fantastic Four and Limited series (comics) are therefore rather disruptive. Your time might be better spent using the streamlined templates non-free media data and non-free media rationale to make the usages more clear, as I did with File:Secretwars1.png, rather than deleting key images out of hand. Thanks.— TAnthonyTalk 05:43, 11 November 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for the feedback, TAnthony. I try to be more careful in the future. A discussion on the same topic can be found at User talk:DreamGuy#Marvel Comics image. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 18:03, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
OK great, you've made other image-related edits that were fine, and you did take the time to update some rationales yourself, so I just wanted to make sure you were clear on this one issue. Thanks! — TAnthonyTalk 18:39, 11 November 2015 (UTC)

I'm not challenging your removal of the sound file, but I'm curious. What is it about the nonfree file of Norwegian Wood that makes it less acceptable than the nonfree file of Michelle? Thanks. Sundayclose (talk) 01:41, 14 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi, Sundayclose. The fact that there isn't a separate, written rationale for the use of that file in that specific article on the file description page. I don't have any opinion on whether it could have; it's the job of those who want to include it to provide a rationale (Wikipedia:NFCCE). Image license

Hello, what changes do I have to make to the license for Gerritson Craane 2.jpg to make it acceptable? It is copyrighted but I have written permission from the creator. Thanks

--Gri3720 (talk) 02:14, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

Hello, Gri3720 The gist of it is that: 1) Wikipedia doesn't allow non-free images of subjects that can be replaced with free images (Gerritson Craane is a living person so anyone can take a photo of him and publish it under a free license). 2) The file you uploaded at File:Gerritson Craane 2.jpg indicates that the author retains copyright (compare that with the previous point to understand why this is not acceptable). 3) We don't allow licenses that permit the use of the image "for use on Wikipedia [only]".

You could contact Kevin Krause the author and ask him to publish his photos under a free license that we allow. Since he has uploaded the photos on Flickr, you could ask him to change the licensing information there to one of the licenses we accept (see Commons:Flickr files).
So long as the photo remains copyrighted we can't use it, even if the author gave us permission to. You must ask him to waive his copyright in order for us to use the photo. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 02:25, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

However, MOS advises against piping in such cases: MOS:PIPE. DEFAULTSORT is not needed when the article should be sorted according to its title ("Goods and services"). The category sorting method is according the article title, and DEFAULTSORT is only used to override it in appropriate cases (eg. "Lastname, Firstname"). I manually added the full stop to the image caption, because it's a full sentence (WP:CAPFRAG). Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 12:17, 22 November 2015 (UTC) (@Checkingfax: forgot to sign in same edit; ping didn't work. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 13:18, 22 November 2015 (UTC))
Hello, Finnusertop. MOS:PIPE is addressing the plural s not the possessive s. MOS:PIPE does not suggest moving a possessive s to outside a wikilink. There are bots running around that move them to inside the wikilink, just so you know.
If the backend treated the possessive s the same way it treats the plural s, or ed, or ing, etc. then there would be no need for piping the possessive s.
If it's already piped, please don't unpipe it.
I've seen cases where there is something like Eric Satie's and somebody will come along and edit it to: Eric Satie's which makes the possessive s and apostrophe go black from blue. What a clash. It loses the hover link underline too.
Mediawiki should do this on the backend like they so for s, ing, ed, etc. but they don't. Until then, please let them be. Thanks! Cheers! Checkingfax {Talk} 14:03, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply, Checkingfax. MOS:PIPE tells us to contact "Plurals and other derived names" - now, I'm not a linguist so I don't know if possessive s' are derived names.
I remember seeing some discussion about what to do with those possessive s' in links that dealt with the question of whether the blue/black "clash" is undesirable or not. I would very much like to take a look at that discussion (or the documentation of the bots you mentioned) but wasn't able to find that.
But don't worry, I don't run that script regularly (I thought I would give it a spin on that TAFI article before the week ends), and I'm not too opinionated on the issue. Feel free to return the pipe in Goods and services. 14:13, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
Checkingfax, the discussion is here, but you seem to have been aware of it already. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 14:19, 22 November 2015 (UTC)

Please stop

You need to stop removing images. Period. I thought we had a decent conversation on my talk page, but you continue to remove obvious fair use images instead of adding that fair usa language to the image files. You are acting like a bot with no intellectual ability at all. I don't care if rules say you can remove the image, because the rules say you can add text even easier. You are acting like a vandal, pure and simple. Stop. DreamGuy (talk) 20:20, 22 November 2015 (UTC)

Hello, DreamGuy. I don't think that a fair-use rationale can be added for this file for the article Conan the Barbarian. Many fair-use cases that seem obvious are not obvious at all when carefully judged against the non-free content criteria, and I think that in this case they are not met. I have nominated the file for removal from the article here: Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2015 November 22#File:Aoc temp cover.jpg. If you have something to ask about how I deal with inappropriate uses of non-free files in general, you can ask me here, but please discuss this specific file at Files for discussion. Pleas also consult Wikipedia:Vandalism for why I think it was inappropriate of you to refer to me as a vandal here and in the edit summary. FC Bihor old emblems

It's not fair, there are a lot of similar cases on wikipedia with old crests of some clubs, FC Bihor is my favorite club and I tried to make a decent page for it, especially in these moments when the team is in bankruptcy and abandoned by everyone, those old crests help people who don't know much about the team's history to identify different historical periods with a specific logo. Please, do not delete these logos, they are part of the history of an important and old Romanian football club, the only team champion in two different countries! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rhinen (talkcontribs) 19:16, 23 November 2015‎ (UTC)

Hello, Rhinen. All articles have to comply with the non-free content rules, and the article on FC Bihor Oradea is no exception. Keep in mind that the rules for non-free content are quite strict - but they are the same for everyone. In that sense, it's not unfair. Please discuss the proposed deletion at Wikipedia:Files for discussion#File:Crisul Oradea logo.png if you want to challenge the nomination. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Hello, Rhinen. I have removed many problematic non-free images, as evidenced by looking at the edit summary I use for such contributions: Edit summary search "infringement" Finnusertop. I found the article FC Bihor because I was alarmed that it contained an unusually large number of non-free files. If you see any other articles about sports teams, companies or other organizations that feature non-free images of their former logos that are not used for identification nor are they subject of sourced critical commentary, feel free to do as I have done and remove them. That there exist other violations of our non-free content policy does not mean that it's okay for this article to do the same. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 20:34, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

I think this a too general title - and generic - to not say who wrote them, - it's not an article about Academic cantatas in general. Benjamin Britten wrote one also, for example. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:33, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

Hello, Gerda Arendt. I've moved it back. I'm not familiar with the topic to the degree that I could determine what the primary topic is. I just checked if there was an article with the same name without the disambiguation, and there wasn't. My understanding is that in such as case Academic cantatas should be a redirect (if we only have an article on Sibelius') or a disambiguation page (if we have articles on others'). Untitled by User:HaronaPani

Hi Finnusertop. Thanks for your response. I collected the File:PaniBabu from the relative of Pani Babu as they are accessible. Pani Babu (Suratha Pani) does have a Facebook page. Should I add in the description of Pani Babu? My second question - should I request the person to upload the PaniBabu photo on Facebook then refer the Facebook address in Wikipedia? My third question - what is the method of referencing a photo? Please help me. Anyone please... — Preceding unsigned comment added by HaronaPani (talkcontribs) 06:08, 12 December 2015 (UTC)

Hello, HaronaPani. The picture should be published prior to us using it. If it wasn't published in a book, a newspaper, or on a website (such as Facebook), but you know the person who has photo, you can ask them to put it online. So yes, it can be uploaded on Facebook then refer the Facebook address in Wikipedia. There isn't a set method. The address of the image is all we need. You can put the address on the image description page at File:PaniBabu.jpg. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 06:35, 12 December 2015 (UTC)

Yeah. I agree that that infobox probably warrants an image. I'm not familiar enough with the topic to say which. But as long as you add a rationale, I'm fine with it. Thanks. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 01:20, 13 December 2015 (UTC)

There is no former Moranbong Band's members in the Chongbong Band. "Moranbong" (모란봉) or "Moranbong Chorus" (모란봉중창조) was a unit of the Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble (보천보전자악단). Moranbong band and Moranbong Chorus are different. 全宰厚 (talk) 09:04, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

That sounds very likely, 全宰厚. It's known to me that Pyongyang Times sometimes makes errors in their English translations. They say "Moranbong Band's chorus". If you have a source (in any language) that puts this more clearly and says that this "Moranbong" chorus is not related to Moranbong Band, please add it to the article. 2015 in art

The Picasso image was right next to the mention of the painting it is of Les Femmes d'Alger. I do not get it please explain the rationale should be evident by reading the article and seeing that the picture is placed in close proximity. The pictures appear on the page of the subjects it is are pictures of one of the series. Please restore the pictureif this rings true. Thanks for your consideration in this matter.Masterknighted (talk) 01:54, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

Hello, Masterknighted. File:Les femmes d’Alger, Picasso, version O.jpg is a non-free image and its use is restricted on Wikipedia to only those cases that meet with all 10 non-free criteria as well as considerations in the non-free use policy. I removed it because it failed at least one criteria, WP:NFCC#10, because there was no use-rationale on its image description page that would explain why it's permitted to use it in 2015 in art.
That being said, I don't think there can be such a rationale, because any conceivable use in 2015 in art would fail WP:NFCC#8 (see also WP:NFC#Meeting the contextual significance criterion). That the image was next to the entry in the list isn't enough to satisfy the criterion. There needs to be sourced, critical commentary about the appearance of the image itself, in a way that warrants the use of the picture for the reader to understand what is being said. 2015 in art only discusses the auction, and that doesn't justify the use of that picture. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 09:51, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
I have reverted your addition, Masterknighted, as it clearly doesn't meet the criteria (see above). If you think it does, we can settle this at WP:FFD. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 18:59, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

I really do not understand it is a news roundup... I put in detail about the painting perhaps critical analysis could follow, but why does the page about the painting qualify and not this one? I put another citation-- it establishes the historic context painted upon the death of Mattisse, the critical stuff should be in the description of what the painting is... This really makes no sense to me and since your reading from the bylaws like the upholder of the bible I do not think that I will win, but, being that it of the painting being mentioned in the summary of the year that it was sold as the most expensive work of art ever at auction it seems to be important to have it there.. But I will wait for you to convince yourself. Masterknighted (talk) 23:15, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Masterknighted. Non-free content issues can be complex sometimes. I know this from having some experience with it. There is a very clear reason why the article about the painting qualifies for the use of the image but most other articles don't. The criterion we are primarily talking about here (WP:NFCC#8) allows for two basic kinds of uses: identification of the topic of the article, and subject of critical commentary about the image itself (see WP:NFC#Meeting the contextual significance criterion).
Let's consider the first one. The reason you see many non-free images on many articles is because the article is about the image. Paintings, famous photographs, sculptures - but also books, music albums etc. - are identifiable by what they look like. That is, Les Femmes d'Alger has the picture of Les Femmes d'Alger because words alone cannot convey this information. This is only applicable to the main article, and some typical cases are spelled out in WP:NFCI.
The second one, contextual significance through critical commentary of the image itself is usually very tricky in articles other than the main article. In order to meet NFCC#8, it should be detrimental to the reader's understanding of what is being said, if there was no image. This essentially means one needs to comment on the appearance in such a way that specific visual aspects are pointed out.
"Contextual significance" is Wikipedia jargon much like "Notability" and doesn't carry with it the same meaning as "important". I am sure you are familiar with articles about things dear and "important" to people being deleted. Most of the same idea applies here: Wikipedia's policies (and those related to copyright are one of the most authoritative ones, because of legal issues) construct these things differently from people's preferences. Images are nice-to-have, but non-free images have a much stricter set of rules they must adhere to. From content grounds I wouldn't oppose the image (ie. if it was free, I would think it's a nice addition), but non-free issues are different from that. Anyway, there is a very specific use listed under examples of unacceptable uses: "An image to illustrate an article passage about the image, if the image has its own article (in which case the image may be described and a link provided to the article about the image)" (WP:NFC#UUI#4). This is exactly the case here. Furthermore, users in lists in general, usually don't qualify for fair-use (WP:NFLISTS). Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 00:15, 22 December 2015 (UTC)
