Choose Your Own Adventure
editGreetings,
I just wanted to reiterate that I would like to participate in the Choose Your Own Adventure article rewrite, as would the editor Milowent. It would be helpful to have some idea about the nature of the rewrite and what information you're looking to source. As the primary complaints previously were regarding the history section and the attribution of the creation of the series concept, those are the references I have supplied so far, but if I had a clearer idea of what it is specifically you're trying to source, I could probably dig up some more references. The references sited by the Contemporary Authors bio would probably be the most useful for history and background.
Seanmercy (talk) 18:01, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
I'd also like to help contribute to the CYOA page, as I use the page a lot to explain the concept of CYOA to people, and the current state of the page someone saddens me. if you can please let me know what exactly it is you're looking for so I can start figuring out the best way to contribute, I would greatly appreciate that. Thanks! Viltris (talk) 23:56, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
- FloNight, I'd also like to help with the CYOA article. We need to get it back up soon or people are going to start writing articles about what is happening which will have a backfire effect we need to avoid.--Milowent • talkblp-r 06:19, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
- OMG, how did links get into the article that call montgomery the creator, when massively distributed mainstream press articles from the 1980s say something else? I really don't have a side here, but verifiability is what we go on here.--Milowent • talkblp-r 21:48, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
- I added a number of additional sources to the talk page. they are all formatted so they can be easily moved into the article with <ref></ref> tags put around them. there's no excuse! i did all the work!! Cheers.--Milowent • talkblp-r 15:37, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
- Flo, fyi, I added some more potential sources to the source section of the CYOA talk page. Cheers.--Milowent • talkblp-r 20:17, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Thanks
editThanks for your nice comments regarding my Kentucky Governors GT and my running for adminship. Last week was hectic, and I didn't have much of a chance to respond, but I have now left a message on my talk page regarding the adminship issue. Just wanted to let you know that those comments weren't ignored. Thanks again. Acdixon (talk • contribs • count) 17:57, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
Still no explanation
editYou stated four days ago that you would give an explanation "in a few minutes" on Talk:Choose Your Own Adventure on why it is under an WP:OFFICE action. You have yet to do so. I have made this section in response to that and also about the continued bias being kept in the article. SilverserenC 00:07, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup!
edit- At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
- To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
- To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.
Apologies for the short notice for this meetup, but let's discuss when, where & what for DC Meetup #17. Also, if you haven't yet, please join wikimedia-dc mailing list to stay informed. Cheers, User:Aude (talk)

editThanks for your recent work on entries related to women's history. I'm glad you're participating in WikiProject Women's History. If you have any questions, concerns, or bright ideas about the project, please don't hesitate to contact me on my talk page. Since you've been active on Wikipedia for a long time, I'd be particularly interested in hearing your thoughts about how we might recruit more editors and get people excited about contributing. ---Shane Landrum (cliotropic | talk | contribs) 00:23, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
Sally Ann
editI want to begin by saying thanks for all your contribs. I am not able to do much, so I don't want to communicate any disrespect whatsoever. Thank you for all your hard and thoughtful work. However, I don't know if you still watch the page, so I wanted to paste my comment here from the Discussion page.
- I would not argue notability here: this is obviously important, ground-breaking lit. That said, we're given very little specific to "Sally Ann." I'm anxious to read these stories, and that is a worthy purpose for encyclopedia articles, but I think this article needs either to go into detail, or be merged into the author article.
My interest involves a country/blues crossover song of the same title, which refers to a lynching and to the more famous "Strange Fruit." Ragityman (talk) 01:38, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

Problems with Wikipedia
editIt has been nearly a year since I logged on. Frankly there is good reason why "unprecedented numbers of the millions of online volunteers who write, edit and police it [wikipedia] are quitting." It is the unwillingness of people to apply standards evenly and fairly.
Truthfully the articles on Robert Watke and Fred J. Strain, both of which were deleted, that I researched and wrote, were done so by people who had an axe to grind with little real training in historical research or editing. The sad thing is that since the editors are unwilling to highlight significant people in small communities, therefore there is less to write about. They were both deemed "unnotable" even though they were very notable in their small community in their time period.
Actually the thing that wikipedia should do is to require ALL editors to have contributed at least a small number of articles themselves before they can become judge and jury. Secondly, they should have an appeals process that submits articles to a panel of judges who actually have the training and credentials to make those types of judgments. Without these changes wikipedia is likely to fade into the sunset over time.
There were 2 editors who were gracious and tried to be fair -- yet there were 2 other "editors" that consistently attempted to delete every article that I submitted. Unfortunately they succeeded because of their loud bombastic voices. Thus I have had no need to waste my time on the wikipedia project.
But I would encourage you to use your position in 2011 to advocate for change in policies. And to develop standards that are easily implemented and develop censure processes for those who flagrantly violate them. Without this, the few in academia, like myself, who supported wikipedia in the past, will continue to leave in droves. Members' input needed at WikiProject Women's History
editHello. I'm writing to you as your name is listed on the members page for WikiProject Women's History. In recent discussions at the project, most notably here, several members have indicated that the scope of the project may need to be more clearly defined and communicated. I have set up a workshop page for this, but it obviously needs as wide a participation as possible to achieve genuine consensus and to allow the project to move forward. You'll find the workshop here.
If you no longer consider yourself an active member of the project, it would help if you could indicate this on the members' page. This will allow us to better gauge how much people-power we actually have. Best wishes, Voceditenore (talk) 18:32, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Photos
editI remember you saying that you occasionally make trips out to Frankfort for photo taking. It's strange to me that we don't have a photo of the Old Governor's Mansion. Think that's one you could pick up next time you're out that way? Presently, my interest stems from a mutual undertaking between myself and User:Doncram to create a list of buildings constructed by Kentucky Governor Thomas "Stonehammer" Metcalfe. If you happen to be near any of those other buildings and can make a photo, I think that could eventually be a featured list if we can get enough images and write enough of the redlinked articles. Interview at Wikimania 2011
editHi Sydney. I hope this finds you well. My name is Matthew Roth and I'm a Storyteller at the Wikimedia Foundation. We're chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community, especially editors/admins and active contributors in the movement like you. I'll be traveling to Wikimania next month to collect stories for our 2011 Fundraiser. While there I'd love the chance to meet with you and hear your thoughts about Wikipedia. We’ll have a schedule of available times for you to sign up if you’re interested, but right now, I'd like to gauge your interest. Please let me know by emailing me at mroth@wikimedia.org or responding on my talk page. Thank you, Matthew (wmf) (talk) 18:59, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the response. I think the best next step is to set up a brief phone call or skype session. We're all going to be pressed for time at Wikimania, so I'd love to get acquainted and discuss the process with you ahead of time, if you're available. The best next step would probably be to email me at mroth@wikimedia.org to set up a good time to chat. Thanks! Matthew (wmf) (talk) 17:46, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Hello. Are you aware of a way (like a common category) to find old deletion discussions of articles that were deleted or proposed for deletion under wp:blp1e? Thanks. Jesanj (talk) 21:41, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
- Hello, sorry but I have no idea how to find them if it is possible. FloNight♥♥♥♥ 22:18, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
- Me again. Sorry I might have become a bit annoying at this point. But at the AfD, you said before proposing deletion that you considered renaming "but decided that in this instance I did not think that ... would correct the BLP concerns in the article since the article is written as a biography". But couldn't one just easily remove some of the biographical details? Am I missing a key reason why renaming and reworking the article wouldn't work under BLP? Thanks again. Jesanj (talk) 18:24, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
- No problem, I don't mind answering questions. :-) Unless the article is deleted, the history of the article would contain the other material for one thing. Since this is a BLP I would prefer not to keep the material that is not used in the history of the article. I suggest that you add material to the cardic stent article first, if the section of that article is too long to hold the all the material, then create a new article about the possible over use of stents as discussed in reliable sources. FloNight♥♥♥♥ 19:30, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
- Then here's another, thanks. Are you suggesting the article is a WP:BLP1E violation of a non-notable event? Jesanj (talk) 20:06, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
- This idea is along the same lines. Jesanj (talk) 21:06, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
- Jesanj, I think that writing an article about a significant study or a significant concept such as "over utilization of cardiac stents" (if there is strong research in reliable sources showing that it is happening) is the way to go. The research article or the broader topic is of global interest. Our goal should be for our article to reflect the world view about the use of cardiac stents. So, rather than focusing a particular person such as Mark Midei, we meet the mission of Wikipedia when we write about topics that are of general interest to the largest number of people. Our notability policy helps us stay focused on the topics where we can find in depth information from a variety of reliable sources over the course of years, if not decades. FloNight♥♥♥♥ 15:57, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- I totally agree. Thanks. But my main point of curiosity remains, do you think an incident article such as the Maryland stent scandal would be non-notable? Jesanj (talk) 16:19, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, I think that an article that focuses on one physician and one hospital would not be notable. (I've reviewed the source articles and know that other physicians and hospitals in Maryland are under scrutiny but this still seems like a local issue rather than something that is of world wide interest. Traditionally, encyclopedias have not covered local medical malpractice scandals, and Wikipedia has not. FloNight♥♥♥♥ 16:44, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. I found Wikipedia:Notability_(events)#Inclusion_criteria and I learned that an event is very likely notable if it has national impact. Jesanj (talk) 17:17, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Image source problem with File:250px-CupcakesFrosted2 wb.jpg
editThank you for uploading File:250px-CupcakesFrosted2 wb.jpg.
This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.
If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 22:51, 13 November 2011 (UTC). If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 22:51, 13 November 2011 (UTC)

Martha Layne Collins
editHey, I'm only like a year late, but just wanted to let you know that Martha Layne Collins is presently up at FAC. I know I said I was going to try and get it ready to be TFA during Women's History Month last year, but obviously, that didn't happen. (In my defense, my first child was born in October last year, so my editing time got cut way down.) Anyway, with some luck, I can get it passed by early to mid-January, and we'll be all set for WHM in 2012. Maybe even International Women's Day on March 8. If you've got time and want to, give your comments on the review page. Thanks. Acdixon (talk · contribs) 16:10, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi Flonight! Thank you so much for your contributions and participation this past week in GLAMcamp DC! I'm so excited about the "state" focused pages, and to see that you've started the ball rolling in St. Augustine. GLAMcamp St.A perhaps? :) SarahStierch (talk) 01:31, 14 February 2012 (UTC) |
- Also, would it be okay if I was "bold" and started to experiment with say....a California page? Let me know, or I can sit tight until a "formula" is developed :) SarahStierch (talk) 01:32, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you for the barnstar! Our idea was to create 4 or 5 states first to see what type of information we want to include, and then go live with all the states. Gaurav and I were going to each create some, independent of each other, and then decide later which style to use. This way we could experiment with more styles. So, sure, go ahead and create a California page. Eventually we'll make them more uniform in style when we figure out the best model. FloNight♥♥♥♥ 16:41, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview
editDear FloNight,
My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.
So a few things about the interviews:
- Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
- Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
- All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
- All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
- The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.
Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.
If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.
Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talk • contribs) 23:27, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

editThank you for considering me. No, I will not be able to help.
I think you've been on the system long enough to know about WikiMedia, which is where the pix would be loaded and assurances given that it is copyright free/compliant. Then it's a matter of putting a commons tag in articles you think could use them. I'm sure you've tried FieldMarine and Horologium. GLAM/NARA
editHey, Flo. I've seen a lot of stuff floating around about this GLAM / NARA collaboration with Wikipedia. I'm not sure I understand what it is all about, but it seems you've been involved to some degree with it, so I thought I'd ask you about it. I was hoping that it might be a way to find some PD images of a few minor federal officeholders about which I have done articles. Orphaned non-free media (File:NRB.jpg)
editThanks for uploading File:NRB.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:03, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested)
editCredo Reference, who generously donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:
- Link to Survey (should take between 5-10 minutes): http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/N8FQ6MM
It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.
At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through WikiProject Resource Exchange).
Also, if you have an account but no longer want to use it, please leave me a note so another editor can take your spot.
If you have any other questions or comments, drop by my talk page or email me at wikiocaasi@yahoo.com. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 17:17, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Time for WLM-US planning
editDear Sydney,
It's time to start planning for a WLM-US event in Florida (or in St. Augustine). There seem to be 2 types of events planned around the country: a traditional "Wiki takes ..." event, where you give a list and a map to relevant sites to editors at the start, and then help upload the photos at the end, and a newer version, the Photo Walk. In a photo walk, the group moves pretty much together over a planned route, with a guide. The purpose might be more enjoying each other's company and learning, than strictly photographing the most sites. St John's County has a "problem" in that it is already fully illustrated. That doesn't mean that you can't take more photos of the sites, only that the new photos should try to go beyond the basic shots that we already have. I'd probably concentrate on the five historic districts in St. Augustine.
You might want to check with User:Pharos about Wikipedia:Wikipedia Takes America, as well as User:Ebyabe about Florida NRHP sites.
All the best, Smallbones (talk) 21:57, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

If you would like to be considered as a candidate, please submit your nomination by 14 September. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact one of the current coordinators on their talk page. Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. Running this fall through October and November, libraries (and archives) will open their doors to help build a lasting relationship with their local Wikipedian community.
Organized by Wikimedia DC, this event will take place on October 12, 2012, and will include new editor training, a "backstage pass" tour of the National Museum of Natural History, and an edit-a-thon. Everyone is welcome to attend!
Indefinite semi-protection of Manute Bol
editHello FloNight. Just wondering, why did you semi-protect Manute Bol indefinitely back in March of 2009? There didn't seem to be a lot of vandalism. Anyways, now it's not a BLP. Thanks, David1217 What I've done 23:29, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
- He was alive back in 2009, and there was persistent vandalism that someone likely brought to my attention. In any case, I took the semi-off now and hopeful all will go well. FloNight♥♥♥♥ 00:29, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Wiki Medicine
editHi
I'm contacting you because, as a participant at Wikiproject Medicine, you may be interested in a new multinational non-profit organization we're forming at m:Wikimedia Medicine. Even if you don't want to be actively involved, any ideas you may have about our structure and aims would be very welcome on the project's talk page.
Our purpose is to help improve the range and quality of free online medical content, and we'll be working with like-minded organizations, such as the World Health Organization, professional and scholarly societies, medical schools, governments and NGOs - including Translators Without Borders.
Hope to see you there! --Anthonyhcole (talk) 07:53, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
