Glamorgan

Hi FruitMonkey, Happy New Year to you too. I agree that 1750 should be a cut off - most sources seem to date the real industrial 'take off' in Wales / Britain as a whole to the late 18th c. I'm not so sure about 1914 though - the number of coalminers in Wales peaked in 1920, Rhondda's population peaked in 1924; the Post-World War I recession seems to me to be more significant in marking a shift from an era of demographic and economic expansion in Glamorgan to one of contraction. I don't know exactly what date we should choose though: 1920? 1925? Lots more work needed on the article, but it's coming along nicely and I think we have enough sources to get it to GA status eventually.--Pondle (talk) 10:33, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

I take your point, maybe picking out Rhondda was a bad example - although I was just quoting p.241 in D. Gareth Evans' book, where he writes the changing patterns of migration into the industrial areas... led to a decline in the numbers who could speak Welsh (he goes on to use Rhondda, Aberdare and Ebbw Vale as examples). I also had a look at Davies et al, p.938; the article on the Welsh language does attribute part of the fall in the proportion of people who could speak Welsh to the arrival of English-speaking immigrants in industrial areas, although obviously there are lots of other factors mentioned - education reforms, the prestige of English as the language of business and empire, etc. I do think we need to discuss the decline of the Welsh language, and the various other social trends of the period, somewhere in that section.--Pondle (talk) 00:04, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

I've asked XrysD - who seems to be one of the best map creators on Wikipedia - to see if he can create a really top-quality map of Glamorgan (for an example of XrysD's previous Welsh work, see this file[1]). I see you've been busy addressing the suggestions I made. Overall I think the article is looking quite good now. There are some aspects of the prose I'm not personally happy with, but being a writer by trade I'm probably more critical than most, but as you say, time is not now on our side. SilkTork did a good job of sorting the History section out and I guess it's sit back and wait for his final verdict. Rugby player articles

Thanks for the response. I have been most impressed by the contribution to rugby history you have made. As with most subjects, recentism (I believe that is the wiki term) is prominent in rugby and work such as yours is helping to redress the balance. I, too, have a leaning towards the historical in terms of where I would tend to focus my efforts. As well as articles, I have attempted to drop in the odd template that is both informative but with a sub-agenda to prompt readers to fill in gaps (hence templates such as Template:English national rugby union team captains, Template:England Squad 1987 World Cup, Template:British and Irish Lions 1910, Template:Rugby Football Union Founding Clubs (and the same for Wales, Ireland and Scotland)) etc). The founding clubs of the RFU led me to fill in all the gaps myself...oh the irony. By the way, you may remembe that I created List of England national rugby union footballers. When I did so, I took elements from other like lists. It is more detailed than Ireland but less than Wales. Is there an accepted standard?Kwib (talk) 13:53, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

SRU presidents

I was thinking of putting up a list of SRU presidents at some point in the near future. I've really been working through the players just now, and there is a considerable overlap between the two. The one thing that makes me a bit apprehensive is that there's more or less one a year! (It's bad enough creating content for obscure players!)

One of the books with a list of SRU presidents in it, if I remember rightly, is Thorburn's "History of Scottish Rugby" (a very dry, and dully written book!) and the local library has a copy I've taken out in the past.--MacRusgail (talk) 14:31, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

List of Wales national rugby league team players

Hi FruitMonkey, armed with "The British Rugby League Records Book", I'm planning to tackle the redlinks on the List of Wales national rugby league team players article in the coming weeks. There'll undoubtedly be some former Rugby Union footballers who went North, so I'd appreciate any information that you have on these players. Also, there are some footballers for who only the initial of the forename is specified, but I've added the club and year(s) that they won caps, so if you have any idea of the forenames, once again I'd be grateful. There are also a couple of Ebbw Vale footballers from 1911; ?. Hitchins, and ?. Smith, for who even the initial of the forename is unknown, so once again I'd be grateful of any information. Cheers. I've found that while at Wigan, Jerry Shea won two caps for Wales RL. I've tried to amend the infobox of his article, but being unfamiliar with the RU infobox, I'm not sure how to add information to an additional country, so your help will be greatly appreciated. I've found that that an Eddie Watkins won 3-caps while at Wigan during 1941…1945. These dates being during WWII, and the RFU having a more relaxed attitude to Rugby League during this period, with inter-code games taking place, I wondered whether Eddie Watkins could actually be Eddie Watkins? Here’s one for your Wales RL Book... there’s a Dai Bevan who won a cap on the wing for Great Britain in December 1952 while at Halifax, there’s a Dai Bevan who won caps on the wing for Wales in September & December 1953 while at Wigan, and there’s a Dai Bevan who played on the wing in the 1954 Challenge Cup Final and replay at Halifax. According to wigan.rlfans.com, Dai Bevan was only at Wigan from 2nd April 1952 until about 28th September 1953, which would have given him ample opportunity to join Halifax in time for the 1954 Challenge Cup Final, but if he was at Wigan from April 1952, he couldn’t have played for Great Britain while at Halifax during December 1952. I suspect that they are all the same player, and that one of the references is incorrect. What does your Wales RL book have to say on the matter? :o) DynamoDegsy (talk) 20:50, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

There's a couple of players with unusual forenames, i.e. Ponty Davies, and Tuss Griffiths, would you know whether they are likely to be nicknames, or contractions of more formal forenames? Also, Robert Ackerman appears to have won cap(s) for Wales RL while at Cardiff in the early 1990s, but as far as I'm aware there wasn't an RL club in Cardiff at the time, and although there appears to be a couple of players who have won RL caps while at an RU club, i.e. Thomas "Tom" Brown while at Coventry R.F.C., and Lenny Woodard while at Pontypridd RFC, I believe the early '90s would've been too early for this to happen, as I believe it pre-dates professional RU, any ideas? Also, according to the "The British Rugby League Records Book" there's a player called Alex Kersey to Brown, "Kersey to Brown" what kind of surname is that?!?!?, any ideas? Hi there, FM—a wee favour please, if you can manage. I'm copy-editing Teifi Valley Railway and have hit the unlinked placename 'Conwyl Efed'. Searching around, I come across Cynwyl Elfed which also features on the template 'Communities of Carmarthenshire':

Aha, thanks for the pics. Zooming in on the first one, I see at right a sign which looks very much like "CONWIL" (with the last letter obscured). I guess the (English) railway administrators would have provided anglicised names. These were either displayed as alternatives or were later replaced by Welsh ones (as in your second pic taken at the same location). Wales flag

The article's coverage is much, much better thanks to your edits! My feeling is that yes, the articles on the flag and the red dragon should be merged as they are really the same subject, and the overlap between the two articles shows how hard it is to separate the two.

In terms of future development, I'd like to include more on the period when the dragon was in the English royal arms and find a photo of a carved coat of arms with the supporters from a Tudor-era building. I assume they were replaced by a Scottish unicorn after the accession of James I but references would be necessary before we can add anything. Ham 17:47, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

Agreed. There is a big space missing between the Tudors and the 1950s, I've been looking for a picture showing the Tudor livery. I also wonder if there are legal aspects to raising the flag, the Stars and Stripes has hundreds. I actually look at the US flag page with dismay, its great; but if we link the Red Dragon and the flag, it opens the floodgates to start showing the absorption of the flag into every day Welsh life. This appears to be the standard Henry VII had blessed at Saint Paul's; perhaps we could get the WP Image Lab to redraw it later on. The best I can find Tudor arms-wise at the moment is this, where the dragon is gold, but maybe the Heraldry WikiProject could point us in the direction of some red ones – I'm sure I saw a bright tomato-red one in a documentary on somewhere in England once. (It looks as if Carl Lofmark, A History of the Red Dragon (1995) is the main book to get on this subject – and 3 copies are going for 9p on Amazon!) I hope the flag hasn't got copyright restrictions, but I see the 1953 royal badge and the WAG logo, which I was hoping to use, are under copyright. I think your gut reaction is correct, if there's no evidence of him being dual-code, or going north, and if he became prominent in Welsh rugby administration, I agree that's pretty compelling evidence that they're not the same chap. I'm going to systematically cross-reference the players in the List of Wales national rugby league team players article to the WRU and Scrum websites, so far I've checked players with articles in the left-hand column. Similar to W.J. Jones (Llanelli) who played in the Wales versus British Empire XIII game at Llanelli 19th May 1951, when there doesn't apppear to have been an RL team in Llanelli Circa-1951, there's a Roy Lambert Neath, Dewsbury, and Warrington 1950…1952 7-caps, when there doesn't apppear to be an RL team in Neath Circa-1950…1952, and a Mel Ford Aberavon 1951 1-cap, when there doesn't apppear to be an RL team in Aberavon Circa-1951. Once again, if they had been RU players, I would have thought the RU/RL antagonism would mean that playing RL would prevent them from ever playing RU again, which would explain why Roy Lambert went on to play for Dewsbury, but where did Mel Ford, and W.J. Bob Jones/Dicky Jones?

According saints.org.uk, there was no Bob Jones playing for St.Helens circa-1948, but there was a Dicky Jones who had signed for St. Helens from Swinton, and "my" Bob Jones had played for Swinton, so I think it's the same man. According to saints.org.uk, Dicky played for Aberavon, Glamorgan County, and Wales XV ("my" Bob Jones played for Wales RL in 1947), this seems to infer a 'Victory International' rather than test match, and I can't find a Bob/Dicky Jones on WRU, however the only non-Test playing Jones' in the Welsh stars still had a rugby ball in wartime article are; WG (Bill) Jones, Elvet Jones, Glyn Jones?, and Hubert Jones. I've found an useful function of the "Infobox rugby league biography", by adding "|first = RU" into the infobox, the rugby union statistics appear before the rugby league statistics, which is often chronologically more representative. DynamoDegsy (talk)

I've got hold of copies of 'Gone North Vol.1', and 'Vol.2', and I've been checking the 'Welsh Rugby Union Caps Who Turned Professional' Appendix VII, to see if I could find any dual-code internationals, I've found that some players that I'd created as solely rugby league internationals, are in fact dual-code, but I've yet to update their articles. Anyhow, I thought I might as well create articles for all the remaining 'Welsh Rugby Union Caps Who Turned Professional', I've tried to match all players to existing articles, but to prevent me creating inadvertent duplicates, would you please be able to check the remaining redlinks on my talkpage? According to 'Gone North - Volume 2', the 'Errata to (Gone North) Volume 1' states... "MOORE William J. joined Rochdale H., not Oldham." At the moment the article mentions neither Rochdale Hornets, or Oldham, but Bradford, would you know whether this is a typo, or did he in fact play for Bradford Northern? Cheers. I've added this note to Jere Blake, and William Morris' articles... In 'Gone North - Volume 2', the 'Errata to (Gone North) Volume 1' section states that "Detailed research now indicates that Jere Blake and William Morris appear never to have signed for Salford or any other professional club although they do appear to have trialled Northern Union clubs"., but just in case there are other references that mention Salford, I've not removed the references to them, but you might want to remove them if 'Gone North - Volume 1' is the only reference. Hugh Lloyd-Davies seems an "interesting" character. The Welsh stars still had a rugby ball in wartime reference states that "The 13-a-side game had also seen the defection of Hugh Lloyd-Davies...", the On This Day - 5 January 1946 external link confirms Hugh Lloyd-Davies kicking a penalty for Wales XV against New Zealand Armed Forces, and the This Day - 29 November 1947 external link has Hugh Lloyd-Davies kicking two penalties for Cambridge University RFC against Oxford University RFC. I assumed that those players who had 'Gone North' had been given temporary dispensation to play RU for the Wales XV, but returned to RL after the "Victory Internationals", but Lloyd-Davies appear to have played RU for the Wales XV while at Barrow RL, and then gone onto play RU with Cambridge University, is this plausible? I reckon they're all the same guy, but I think that the 'Welsh stars still had a rugby ball in wartime' might be incorrect, if he is playing for Ammanford RFC, Wales XV, and Cambridge University, circa-1945…47, and he became the first Cambridge Blue to turn professional, it's likely he played for Wales XV while at Ammanford RFC/Cambridge University, and that he became a Barrow player after this time... before legging it to Paris with his £1000 signing on fee!!!. In the David and Evan James articles, it says "In 1892, James and his brother supposedly turned out for professional rugby league team Broughton Rangers...", should this be 1895, or later, as this is when the NU breakaway took place, or were they actually illegally paid to play rugby union for Broughton Rangers? So the James' left Swansea RFC to play rugby (union) for Broughton Rangers, but while at Broughton the James' were paid, and were banned by the RFU (presumably Broughton Rangers were also banned, or severely reprimanded), stayed at Broughton and played rugby league as Broughton joined the Northern Union, but then were reinstated by the RFU on appeal, returned to play rugby union for Swansea, and Wales, before finally leaving for rugby league at Broughton Rangers? Harold Jones (rugby)/Harold Jones (rugby league)

I've nothing to link Harold James Jones, and Harold Jones as the same person, but they did play in a similar era, and if he left Wigan in 1933, and went to Keighley, he could have won caps for Wales (RL) in 1935…36 as he'd have only been 28…29. He was a Lock in his union days, a second-row in his Wigan days, so it's not implausible that he could have played Prop, or Hooker for Wales (RL) after this. I'd welcome any information you might have.

In terms of notable buildings from 1920-74, the Welsh Academy Encyclopedia mentions the Guildhall in Swansea, Sully Hospital, the University of Wales Hospital in Cardiff - an era of modernist and functionalist styles. I think St. David's Shopping Centre was built in the early 80s and the old National Stadium was started in the late 60s but only finished in 1984. Sport would be an interesting topic to expand on, I have a copy of Fields of Praise, the official WRU history from 1980, which is VERY detailed. I know less about football and cricket, though obviously we have the encyclopedia to help and whatever sources we can find online. Ultimately we may have to split some of these long sections into separate articles but that would be no bad thing, even more GA candidates!--Pondle (talk) 21:45, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

I hear you. It is my bad as I copy/paste the WPRU banner I sometimes have been negligent to change the default 'stub' class designation... Blair Swannell being one of a couple (I forget which other one I had ballsed up). One interesting source of information I stumbled across recently is the NLA newspaper archive, where it possible to bring up all the contemporary articles from their day. Blair Swannell has quite a few articles that can be mined for further data possibly. I am beginning to put search links on the talk pages for these stubs I am putting up - you will find a few on Blair Swannell's talk page.
