Visually distracting. The policy at WP:SIG says in fact "Your signature should not blink, or otherwise inconvenience or be annoying to other editors." It a bit long for some people's taste, but I personally don't have an issue with that. pschemp | talk 17:28, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Macedonism

edit

I'm wondering whether to add the (what I presume are) the Albanian and Greek names for Macedonism. In Albanian it would probably be 'Maqedonizëm', and in Greek, it would probably be 'Μακεδονισμός' (Makedonismós). The problem is, I cannot find any sources confirming that either of the terms can be used in that way. Any ideas? --Tēlex 20:31, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, this could be a problem. Maybe it has only colloquial use. You should be able to find it at least in Greek, since we have one Greek author talking about it in English. Check google scholar?   /FunkyFly.talk_  20:34, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Nothing. I'll have to see if I can find one of his printed publications (I find that Google scholar isn't really helpful when it comes to non-English languages). --Tēlex 20:42, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Vlatko

edit
OK, this is related to the talk we had over Macedoniasm, all I want to say is that the use of the term is wrongly used. The starting part of the article describes this title or term: Macedonification of Bulgarians, Macedonism means Macedonian culture and its influence in existence. And it is not in a neutral point of view, you are just proving that the term has no other meanings, just the bulgarian is the right one, and so you implicate wrong context. Pleae add a bulgarian "use" of Macedonism for "purposes". And correct the titling--Vlatko 02:42, 23 June 2006 (UTC
I'm trying to confirm your claim, but I cannot do so.   /FunkyFly.talk_  03:07, 24 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ok, than remove the part of the starting article where is mentioned the relation of Macedonisns with Bulgarians to an section regarding it, and the coining also. It is not proven that Macedonians are Bulgarians and otherwise. Realy, the explanation of the term is lost.--Vlatko 15:10, 24 June 2006 (UTC

Funky, why did you make a separate article for Macedonians? The content was only a fork of Macedonian, exactly duplicating the demography section. Since it was a redirect to Macedonian, I also don't see any pov concerns.--Aldux 18:00, 26 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Reverts in Ilyo Voyvoda

edit

May I ask why you reverted my edits in Ilyo Voyvoda? Note that references to Macedonia link to Macedonia as a region, not the present state, and since the subject was born in the region I think this is the only verifiably correct way to refer to him (unless you can provide a reference that he felt ethnically Bulgarian?). Do you agree that he is considered a national hero both in Bulgaria and Macedonia (state)? The names divided by a slash are Bulgarian and Macedonian (language) transliterations from the cyrillic, what do you have against mentioning both? Since he is apparently a national hero in Macedonia (state), the article is a Macedonia-related stub, isn't it? Preslav 13:08, 6 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Because it is not specific enough. He was Bulgarian. You can reinstate the other names under which he was known if you wish.   /FunkyFly.talk_  18:02, 6 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

You renamed my article!!!

edit

That was extremely rude and uncivilized!!!

I wouldn't mind if you picked a better title (since I was not too happy with the title either, it was too long). But you picked a much worse one.

Yes, the macedonian language did not exist in 1840 as a standard langauge. But the bulgarian language didn't exist in 1840 as a standard language either. They were both in diapers. That presented a good oportunity to make one standard langauge for both Macedonians and Bulgarians. It looks like Macedonians back then didn't mind the appelation "Bulgarian", as long as the language is close enough to their dialect, so they can understand it, and use it. The language of Neofit Rilski, based on the Pirin Macedonian dialect, fairly close to the Shopski dialect, was an excellent choice. It was a central, compromise dialect between western Macedonian dialect, and eastern Bulgarian dialect.

Unfortunately, the Bulgarians had a different idea of what their standard language should look like. They adopted the eastern Trnovo-Varna dialect to be a central and compromise dialect between the Shopi and the fish in the Black See. They completely rejected the Macedonian dialect and left Macedonians on their own, to create their own standard language. So, this diaper phase (1840-1860) ended up with a pretty messy results. It ended up with creating two standard langauges: Macedoian and Bulgarian.

Now think about a better name for this article. --Filip M 13:12, 28 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Your article? Bulgarian was not standartized, but was widely recognized as a language, unlike Macedonian, which was not acknowledged until 1903. The name is just right.   /FunkyFly.talk_  03:44, 30 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

The difference being, you were directing your curse at me, I don't remember ever having said you've "bitched". I may have a page full of translations of "fuck the border", but its slightly different to making incivil accusations. I'd be glad to see diffs where I've sworn at someone or criticised someone using strong language, but I try and avoid it, and would apologise if it came out in the "heat of the moment" so to speak. And regarding "blindly reverting", again show me the diff because I have no idea what you're talking about. - FrancisTyers · 18:56, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hey

edit

You should have noted that on the talk page, perhaps that would have stopped the edit war. I've found the "Turkish official" mentioned on a few pages at least. Are you sure there isn't some subsidiary law making it official in some circumstances? Like in the UK we have the "Welsh Language Act" and language isn't mentioned in our (non-existent) constitution. - FrancisTyers · 21:53, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

And if it isn't official, it probably should be (at least in some circumstances), after all the Turks make up quite a large minority in Bulgaria, certainly more than the Welsh and Scots in the UK. :) - FrancisTyers · 21:55, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, I'm not saying it should be included in the article. But perhaps if it has any kind of official use (e.g. regulated by a secondary law) it should appear in the bottom of the infobox, like Welsh and all the other minority languages do on the United Kingdom page. As a matter of interest, why don't you support having Turkish as a recognised minority language in Bulgaria? You don't have to answer, I'm just curious. - FrancisTyers · 22:10, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I didn't say more, I'm sure we have more in total (our country is probably 6-7 times larger than yours), but I'm talking specifically about percentage, Welsh in the UK, vs. Turks in Bulgaria. Welsh make up probably around 3% of the UK population, I've seen figures for Turks between 6% and 15% - FrancisTyers · 22:14, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Most probably there are around 15%. Turks have their own party which rules in the Bulgarian Guvernment.--ElevatedStork 06:05, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
As I said above, I'm not talking about percentage of all ethnic minorities (although provisions are made where any minority has a large population) — for example interpreters at court, information on the benefits system in many languages etc. — signs and advertisements etc.
I'm talking specifically about one minority, the Welsh, or the Scots which make up ~3% and ~8% of the population respectively. Both Welsh and Scots Gaelic have official recognition. Why would you oppose it for Turkish? - FrancisTyers · 22:22, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Incidentally, since you mention it, the Jamaicans speak English, although a different (in some cases very different) dialect from the English of England. In certain circumstances allowances are made for children at school speaking this and extra help is provided. - FrancisTyers · 22:27, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I feel very strongly that the Turkish government should end its oppressive treatment of the Kurdish people in all aspects, linguistic, cultural and political. Ever wonder who asked me if I was Kurdish? - FrancisTyers · 22:39, 1 August 2006 (UTC) (Answer since you don't care: A Turk who was getting frustrated at my continual defence of the rights of the Kurdish people)Reply

Incidentally, if you don't want to answer the question regarding the recognition of the Turkish language in Bulgaria, as I said you don't have to, just let me know and I'll stop asking :) - FrancisTyers · 22:40, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

So am I to understand that you don't wish your rationale to be known? - FrancisTyers · 22:48, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ok, no problem, I can understand that you might be embarassed by it, I'll give it a rest. I have my theories anyway :) - FrancisTyers · 22:56, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Possibly in London, but it would be really expensive. They have 8Mb down, 512K up now (accross the country), but the problem is always it is capped, e.g. you can only download a certain amount per month. I prefer to be able to download as much as I want and have a lower speed.
