Administrators' newsletter – August 2022

News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2022).

  Administrator changes

  Valereee
  Anthony Appleyard (deceased) • CapitalistroadsterSamsara

  Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC has been closed with consensus to add javascript that will show edit notices for editors editing via a mobile device. This only works for users using a mobile browser, so iOS app editors will still not be able to see edit notices.
  • An RfC has been closed with the consensus that train stations are not inherently notable.

  Technical news

  • The Wikimania 2022 Hackathon will take place virtually from 11 August to 14 August.
  • Administrators will now see links on user pages for "Change block" and "Unblock user" instead of just "Block user" if the user is already blocked. (T308570)

  Arbitration

  • The arbitration case request Geschichte has been automatically closed after a 3 month suspension of the case.

  Miscellaneous

  • You can vote for candidates in the 2022 Board of Trustees elections from 16 August to 30 August. Two community elected seats are up for election.
  • Wikimania 2022 is taking place virtually from 11 August to 14 August. The schedule for wikimania is listed here. There are also a number of in-person events associated with Wikimania around the world.
  • Tech tip: When revision-deleting on desktop, hold ⇧ Shift between clicking two checkboxes to select every box in that range.

New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello GeneralNotability/Archives/2022,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.

New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.
Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
  • To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Hat

I guess you didn't eat your hat. Thanks. Drmies (talk) 15:33, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

Drmies, correct, but I did stock up on edible hats a while back just in case. GeneralNotability (talk) 16:32, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
Well, I appreciate it. BTW I think that this case should, as a matter of course, be handled by ArbCom with a copy to Trust & Safety, to keep you and me and other editors out of it. Besides, I'm sure you know T&S has a file for this person. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 21:57, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

block

Hi, could you clarify why this IP has been blocked? There were just two edits and they were not disruptive. Or am I missing something? Alaexis¿question? 09:21, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Alaexis, it's a rangeblock on Special:Contribs/2001:569:57B2:4D00:0:0:0:0/64, and whoever is on that range has had ongoing issues with inappropriate editing. GeneralNotability (talk) 01:19, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
I see, thanks. Alaexis¿question? 06:23, 17 August 2022 (UTC)

Another question about spi helper

Hi, a few minutes ago when I clicked on the block and close checkboxes at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Mili977, I noticed a checkbox called "Tag accounts without an attached local account", and it was checked. I don't recall ever seeing it before, or perhaps it wasn't checked by default before. I'm not sure what it means?--Bbb23 (talk) 11:08, 17 August 2022 (UTC)

Bbb23, it's new as of this most recent merge. There's a safety check to not tag accounts that aren't attached on enwiki (normally happens if someone is making a cross-wiki report), that checkbox says to tag anyway, which was the default behavior before this release. GeneralNotability (talk) 00:43, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
Didn't know there was a "merge". I noticed other new things, too, although now I can't remember them. Are you saying I should always leave it checked? Does it hurt anything to uncheck it (I unchecked it on the ones I did today)?--Bbb23 (talk) 01:35, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
Merge, in this case, in the software sense - I moved the development code into production, first time in half a year. I don't think it matters for the most part whether you leave it checked or not. GeneralNotability (talk) 01:41, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 01:47, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

Bullseye trouble

Hello, GeneralNotability! I'm having some trouble with Bullseye, I'm getting a 500 error whenever I try to load results. Could you do me a favor and take a look? It seems to have started happening after I authenticated. Thank you! ~ Matthewrb Talk to me · Changes I've made 17:20, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

Matthewrb, mind trying again? GeneralNotability (talk) 21:16, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
@GeneralNotability It works now, thank you so much! ~ Matthewrb Talk to me · Changes I've made 21:22, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
Awesome. I think the problem had to do with you being renamed at some point in the past - there was an account for your past username but not your current one. I deleted your account and you logging in recreated it. GeneralNotability (talk) 21:23, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

General question regarding ArbCom

Hey, just a quick question. While I’m appreciative ArbCom declined the case, I had legitimate questions as to what I had to do with the case, and the case request didn’t mention me by name at all, other than to put my name on the list. For future reference, if I am brought into a case request that I am unsure of my involvement, is there a way to question that? Or would I have to question the person requesting the case? And if so, if there is no reason articulated for me to be involved in the case, is there a mechanism in which to remove myself from the case? I’ve never dealt with ArbCom at all, I would greatly appreciate some insight into the process. Thank you! FrederalBacon (talk) 23:26, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi FrederalBacon! There's no formal mechanism for removing yourself as a party, but basically saying what you said here - "I'm not sure why I'm a party to this case, my involvement is just (such-and-such)" would be enough to get the point across. You can ask the filer for more details or you can just leave it at that. When full cases are opened, the arbs do look at the party list and add or remove people as appropriate (generally they try to keep the list of parties restricted to people who are very important to the case) and I think you would have been dropped as a party. Don't worry too much about it - you're not the first person to be caught up in an over-broad list of parties. GeneralNotability (talk) 00:23, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you very much, I appreciate the response! FrederalBacon (talk) 03:30, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

Query

Hello, GeneralNotability,

I was wondering how much evidence you had that Ahatd was working as a undisclosed paid editor. They have a sarcastic persona and the reply to the IP editor was clearly sarcasm. I'm inclined to unblock them unless you have information in addition to what you shared on their talk page. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 06:33, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

Liz, as I said on their talk page, I've seen a job ad clearly corresponding to an article they created. Please don't think I would make a block purely based on a likely-sarcastic comment. GeneralNotability (talk) 23:28, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

NPP message

Hi GeneralNotability/Archives/2022,

Invitation

For those who may have missed it in our last newsletter, here's a quick reminder to see the letter we have drafted, and if you support it, do please go ahead and sign it. If you already signed, thanks. Also, if you haven't noticed, the backlog has been trending up lately; all reviews are greatly appreciated.

Discord question

Sorry to bother you, I think I (same username in both) was banned from the wikipedia discord? Can I ask why? Is there a more appropriate venue to ask? Can you tell me who/where to ask? Thanks. Tttmaker (talk) 23:54, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
