Don't withdraw the FL nomination. I'll leave my comments on the nomination page some point next week, when I have time. Grapesoda22 (talk) 23:48, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
Hi there. I just noticed that List of universities in India was not promoted. This is my first FL attempt so please treat this as what it is - me trying to understand the process. To my understanding practically all the problems raised were resolved, why is it then that the article was not promoted? Best regards. --Muhandes (talk) 22:54, 5 November 2011 (UTC)
- Resolving the issues raised by reviewers isn't enough by itself for a list to be promoted. There also has to be consensus among reviewers that the list should be promoted; a consensus is shown by reviewers' support. If reviewers don't offer support, us directors can't automatically assume that consensus exists. It's unfortunate for you, but the list had been at FLC for a long time (probably too long) and didn't seem to have any momentum indicating that more support was coming. In this case, I thought a clean start at FLC would be better than keeping the old one open longer. If you feel that you've addressed all the issues brought up earlier, you can re-nominate the list. Hopefully it will get more reviewers than it did the first time. Giants2008 (27 and counting) 01:46, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
- Is it OK to re-nominate it immediately? Also, how would you suggest I could make editors support it? Is it OK to approach editors who made comments which were addressed and ask for their supports? --Muhandes (talk) 08:20, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, if you feel that all actionable issues have been acted upon. Unfortunately, there's no real way to make reviewers support something, and asking for support from reviewers is frowned upon (it's not that far removed from canvassing). About the best you can do is to leave messages on reviewers' talk pages, telling them you've responded to their concerns and asking them to return to the FLC. Giants2008 (27 and counting) 16:38, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
- Good, then I will take the chance to make some updates and renominate, thanks. --Muhandes (talk) 14:18, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

List of Tranmere Rovers F.C. managers
Hey there. TRM suggested I had a word with you. One of the reviewers of this FLC nomination has been quiet for a while. I tried to address his comments and concerns, but don't know if the changes were to his satisfaction. I am concerned that if the reviewer doesn't reappear, the article may fail the "actionable objections have not been resolved" criterion. Would you be able to have a peek? Thanks. U+003F? 12:26, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
- Cheers for the help. Can I ask for one more piece of advice- the nomination has stagnated somewhat; should I advertise it, say on WP:FOOTBALL, or would that constitute canvassing? U+003F? 19:51, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
- ... ah, I spotted there was a section for just that, so added the list there. U+003F? 20:29, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

List of culinary nuts
I've been working a bit on List of culinary nuts. I'm considering trying to take it to FL. To be clear, I haven't really even started yet, so I'm not asking you to look at as a candidate yet, but I wanted to ask your advice on what direction I might take. I could do something like list of vegetable oils, and write a brief, well-cited entry for each nut, perhaps including nutritional properties, and anything else that is special about each nut. On the other hand, I could just try to keep it simple, beef up the references, and leave it at that. I'd also want to make sure that the article covers all culinary nuts, of course. Any thoughts on what direction seems appropriate? Waitak (talk) 02:04, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
- That's kind of where my intuition went as well. I'd like to tackle a few more FL's, and this seems like a good one to start with. See you there! Waitak (talk) 02:44, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
- I note that after submitting the article as an FLC last Saturday, the page is not marked as "patrolled" yet. Does that have any consequences for it being visible to people who might be interested in participating in the discussion? Waitak (talk) 20:14, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi Giants2008. I am contacting you since at the previous nomination you made some comments which were fully addressed to the best of my knowledge. Sadly, the previous nomination was rejected due to lack of support. Since then the list was split, but the matters you referred to last time remain corrected. I would appreciate it if you could comment on the list, and perhaps voice your support if you think the list deserves it. Best regards. --Muhandes (talk) 16:00, 14 December 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for your comments. Last time I believe all comments by all reviewers were addressed but the list was still not promoted due to lack of support. Would you consider supporting the list? Best regards. --Muhandes (talk) 14:11, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
- It's difficult for me to offer support in my position as FL director, since I need to be unbiased when closing FLCs. I probably support too many lists as is (usually sport-related ones); it's then hard for me to want to close them, which is a problem since I'm the most frequent closer at the moment. I see your list has one support already; hopefully it will get more reviews soon. Oh, and please be careful about asking people to support something. I don't think you have anything but the best intentions, but some may think of an explicit request for support as canvassing. You're better off just asking for reviews in a situation like this. Giants2008 (Talk) 03:25, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for your response, I was not aware of your position. The only reason I am asking for support is that last attempt I was passive, the list got several reviews, I spent several weeks working to address them all, all issues were addressed, and yet the list was not promoted due to lack of support. I thought I'll ask the reviewers which already reviewed the list to do so again, and then I asked only the reviewers that got their comments addressed to support, if they see fit. As I approached all reviewers for a second review, not just the supporters, I thought this would not be considered canvassing. I also mentioned the fact at the nomination's text. Anyway, I now fully understand that as director you cannot support lists. Best regards. --Muhandes (talk) 18:21, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

Re: Image question
Hi Giants2008. The first rule in US Copyright law is to determine publication status. Without evidence that it was published before 1923, we would have to look for any post-1923 publication and treat it as first publication (provided the copyright owner was the one who authorized it).
In the alt text of the image (on the site) in question, it states "Harold Peterson, author of The Man Who Invented Baseball, has conjectured that ..."; I take this statement to mean that Peterson might have obtained permission to print the photograph in The Man Who Invented Baseball (1973). If he clearly states the providence of the photograph (and if it is quite likely the owner has copyright: in the US, material unpublished until 2002 was guaranteed infinite copyright duration; after 2002, if still unpublished we go by the 70-year/120-year rule), then we would take 1973 as the first publication and determine the duration of the copyright. If published with notice, 95 years; if not, public domain.
I am afraid in this case, you would have to locate the book to find out if a valid publication was made and if a copyright notice was at the front of the book (or on the reproduction of the photograph within). If Peterson states the photograph came from some other publication, we would have do investigating there. Jappalang (talk) 00:33, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

Joe Lillard
Hello. In your edits on Joe Lillard you have a reference that Lillard was an All-American in football and baseball at Oregon. I see no corroborative evidence of this on any of the All American sites. Lillard only played two games of varsity football at Oregon before he was declared ineligible by the Pacific Coast Conference for playing semipro baseball under an assumed name, so it is unlikely he would have been nominated as an All American, and he is not listed by the University as having AA status (the school lists all players who are named to any AA team in its annual football media guide). And I haven't found any records of him ever playing baseball at Oregon, possibly because he would have automatically been ineligible, having admitted playing semipro ball.
It appears the source cited in support of the detail may have been published directly from a press release or other promotional information without verification, as publicity for "Camp Unity."
Lillard's story is interesting enough. I'd rather not jump into your edit, but I suggest getting some legitimate sourcing for the AA claim, or removing it from the wiki. Abdoozy (talk) 06:52, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2012 WikiCup
Hello, and welcome to the 2012 WikiCup! The competition officially begins at the start of 2012 (UTC) after which time you may begin to claim points. Your submission page, where you must note any content for which you wish to claim points, can be found here, and formatting instructions can be found in hidden comments on the page. A bot will then update the main table, which can be seen on the WikiCup page. The full rules for what will and will not be awarded points can be found at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There's also a section on that page listing the changes that have been made to the rules this year, so that experienced participants can get up-to-date in a few seconds. One point of which we must remind everyone; you may only claim points for content upon which you have done significant work, and which you have nominated, in 2012. For instance, articles written or good article reviews started in 2011 are not eligible for points.
This round will last until late February, and signups will remain open until the middle of February. If you know of anyone who may like to take part, please let them know about the comeptition; the more the merrier! At the end of this round, the top 64 scorers will progress to the next round, where their scores will reset, and they will be split into pools. Note that, by default, you have been added to our newsletter list; we will be in contact at the end of every month with news. You're welcome to remove yourself from this list if you do not wish to hear from us. Conversely, those interested in following the competition are more than welcome to add themselves to the list. Please direct any questions towards the judges, or on the WikiCup talk page. Good luck! J Milburn (talk) and The ed17 (talk) 17:53, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Hehe - you should never be sorry to correct me when I'm wrong! I must admit that being a Brit, I know nothing about American Football, so I found the lead interesting, but I have no idea of the accuracy of the contents or what requires a reference, so I shouldn't have been so affirmative. I was trying to say something nice but innocuous before the criticism! It does go to show how important it is to have several sets of eyes on all nominations, and it's fortunate that you have the expertise to give constructive criticism to Buggie. WikiCup 2012 January newsletter
WikiCup 2012 is off to a flying start. At the time of writing, we have 112 contestants; comparable to last year, but slightly fewer than 2010. Signups will remain open for another week, after which time they will be closed for this year. Our currrent far-away leader is Grapple X (submissions), due mostly to his work on a slew of good articles about The X-Files; there remain many such articles waiting to be reviewed at good article candidates. Second place is currently held by Ruby2010 (submissions), whose points come mostly from good articles about television episodes, although good article reviews, did you knows and an article about a baroness round out the score. In third place is Jivesh boodhun (submissions), who has scored 200 points for his work on a single featured article, as well as points for work on others, mostly in the area of pop music. In all, nine users have 100 or more points. However, at the other end of the scale, there are still dozens of participants who are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly!
The 64 highest scoring participants will advance to round 2 in a month's time. There, they will be split into eight random groups of eight. The score needed to reach the next round is not at all clear; last year, 8 points guaranteed a place. The year before, 20.
A few participants and their work warrant a mention for achieving "firsts" in this competition.
- 12george1 (submissions) was the first to score, with his good article review of Illinois v. McArthur.
- 12george1 (submissions) was also the first to score points for an article, thanks to his work on Hurricane Debby (1982)- now a good article. Tropical storms have featured heavily in the Cup, and good articles currently have a relatively fast turnaround time for reviews.
- Sp33dyphil (submissions) was the first to score points for a did you know, with Russian submarine K-114 Tula. Military history is another subject which has seen a lot of Cup activity.
- Sp33dyphil (submissions) is also the first person to successfully claim bonus points. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is now a good article, and was eligible for bonus points because the subject was covered on more than 20 other Wikipedias at the start of the competition. It is fantastic to see bonus points being claimed so early!
- Speciate (submissions) was the first to score points for an In the News entry, with Paedophryne amauensis. The lead image from the article was also used on the main page for a time, and it's certainly eye-catching!
- Jivesh boodhun (submissions) was the first to score points for a featured article, and is, at the moment, the only competitor to claim for one. The article, "Halo" (Beyoncé Knowles song), was also worth double points because of its wide coverage. While this is an article that Jivesh and others have worked on for some time, it is undeniable that he has put considerable work into it this year, pushing it over the edge.
We are yet to see any featured lists, featured topics or good topics, but this is unsurprising; firstly, the nomination processes with each of these can take some time, and, secondly, it can take a considerable amount of time to work content to this level. In a similar vein, we have seen only one featured article. The requirement that content must have been worked on this year to be eligible means that we did not expect to see these at the start of the competition. No points have been claimed for featured portals or pictures, but these are not content types which are often claimed; the former has never made a big impact on the WikiCup, while the latter has not done so since 2009's competition.
A quick rules clarification before the regular notices: If you are concerned that another user is claiming points inappropriately, please contact a judge to take a look at the article. Competitors policing one another can create a bad atmosphere, and may lead to inconsistencies and mistakes. Rest assured that we, the judges, are making an effort to check submissions, but it is possible that we will miss something. On a loosely related note: If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
