Your question on the Newcomer's help desk
editHello,
I updated an article and didn't realize my IP address showed. I then signed up, logged in and then went back to the same article and replaced my text with what was originally there when I found it. I would like to hide the IP address as I am a guest user on the PC. Is it possible to delete the addition altogether (since I have changed it back) or change the IP address to my new user name? I just didn't know it would show up like that and I'm worried. Thanks. Please post to my talk page. The item that I changed was "Sarayu" river. 04:16, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not entirely sure what you are referring to - do you mean remove the anonmymous edit (listed by IP address) from the edit history of that page? I'm afraid that's not possible - due to the license Wikipedia operates under, all edits must be preserved in the edit history, and I'm afraid that goes for changing the IP/user attributed to an edit, too (so we can't change the database so that your IP-address is listed under your new username). Sorry!
- On the other hand, you can certainly change the content of the article in question as much as you like. But the edit history will remain. If I didn't answer your question, or if you have other questions, feel free to post to my talk page!
- Oh, and could you please sign your talk posts with four tildes (like this: ~~~~)? That way, we can see who wrote a particular message and now just when it was written. Cheers! — QuantumEleven | (talk) 07:04, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
- If you really must have the IP hidden (for security, safety reasons etc) I can delete the edit for you. Then only adminstrators will be able to see the edit. Just let me know if you want me to do that.--Commander Keane 07:11, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
- OK, the IP at Sarayu is hidden.--Commander Keane 06:18, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
