editHey, Godzooky, welcome to Wikipedia! I saw your post on Dennis Brown's talk page. It's awesome that you're interested in helping out, but becoming an administrator on Wikipedia requires some Wikipedia experience first. As an example, I recently became an administrator myself, but not until I had spent over a year helping out in different places, and I'm probably on the lower edge of experience! No worries, though; there's lots of other stuff to do around here. I started out by basically going to random pages and fixing typos I found, in order to gain some confidence with the technical process of editing. There's always maintenance things like anti-vandalism work, and of course, the most important work of all: writing and improving articles! There's a guide on contributing to Wikipedia here; it might be a good place for you to start. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page (I'm sure Dennis would be happy to answer your questions, as well), or you can check out the Teahouse, which is a place for new users to ask any questions they have about Wikipedia in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Happy editing! Writ Keeper ⚇♔ 21:41, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- I would also welcome you and hope you become a regular part of Wikipedia. Becoming an administrator takes time and experience, and perhaps in due time this is something you want to consider, but it would be too early. There are no rules that dictate a minimum experience level, but to compare with Basalisk, he had 6000 edits and just over a year of active service, and he faced a lot of opposition and barely passed. It didn't hurt that he is a medical doctor, but degrees aren't required. I have no degree and passed, but I had waited until I had been here over 5 years and had over 18,000 edits and several articles under my belt. But you don't need to be an admin to help out. Actually, the non-admin are more important to the project by a large degree. I spend most of my time cleaning up, helping mediate disagreements, discussing policy, and working with new editors like yourself. This is what I'm good at. Others are content creators, who create lots of articles, fix grammar issues, find sources, and generally improve the quality of the encyclopedia. That is the most important job around here, and not what I am the best at. In short, admin just clean up the place so the real authors can create articles. And articles is why people come to, and depend on Wikipedia. So I appreciate the enthusiasm, but you need to learn the basics first.
- I've taken the liberty of adding our standard "welcome" template to the top of your page. It has a lot of useful links that are worth looking at from time to time, and will help you get up to speed on what we do around here. Again, welcome to Wikipedia, we are glad to have you as part of the community. If you have any question, please feel free to write a note on Writ Keeper's talk page or mine, either of us will be happy to offer whatever assistance we can.
