Cleaning with AWB

Project tagging question

Hi! Thanks again for generating the wonderful lists for the Museums Wikiproject. I have a question that I'm not sure if you'd know the answer to, but I wanted to try in case you did. Is there an easy way to tag the museums with the project? I know there are oodles of scripts like Twinkle, but I don't really know scripts. bot's removal of "orphan" tag

why is this bot removing the "orphan" maintenance tag (template:orphan; or, in this case, the variation included in the template:multiple issues) from an article with only three articles linking to it. do i not understand the spirit of "orphan"?

The Template:Orphan documentation says "This template should only be put on articles which meet the orphan criteria." which states "An article is orphaned if no other articles link to it. It is recommended to only place the {{orphan}} tag if the article has ZERO incoming links from other articles. Although a single, relevant incoming link is sufficient to remove the tag, three or more is ideal and will help ensure the article is reachable to readers." BattyBot uses AutoWikiBrowser, which has general fixes set up so it "Removes {{Orphan}} if article has more than 2 incoming links."

I just used the Find link tool to create ten more links to store-within-a-store, so there should be no question about its orphan status in the future. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 15:19, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Taninao - welcome to Wikipedia! Just because your new doesn't mean your questions are stupid. Asking questions is a great way to learn, and I'm happy to help. I'm sorry my edit summary didn't sufficently explain what I was trying to do with this edit. AWB stands for AutoWikiBrowser, a piece of software "designed to make tedious repetitive tasks quicker and easier" which "suggests some changes (typically formatting) that are generally meant to be incidental to the main change." (See Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser for further information. The "AWB" link in the edit summary takes you to the same page.) So here's an explanation for this edit:

• I used AWB to generate a list of all the articles that contained the misspelling "Liza Minelli" (including Jennifer O'Neill), and changed each article to use the correct spelling: "Liza Minnelli". That's the main reason for this edit.
• AWB alerted me to the fact that the cite book template for Surviving Myself was not complete, so I manually added the |title= parameter. This enabled the text Surviving Myself to be visible for Reference 1 at the bottom of the article.
• Based on a set of rules called general fixes (also linked in my edit summary), AWB made the following other minor corrections (which don't change the way the article is displayed on the screen):

1. Removed the unnecessary underscore from the link to Vogue magazine
2. Changed the {{cn}} templates to {{citation needed}} and {{imdb name}} to {{IMDb name}} to avoid redirects
3. Changed the citation templates to use |year= instead of |date= when a month & day are not specified

• I also created a rule in my version of AWB to remove the "Metadata: see Wikipedia:Persondata" comment in the {{Persondata}} template, which is no longer needed (but doesn't change the way the article is displayed on the screen).

This place is just filled with all these abbreviations for stuff I have absolutely no idea of what it is or means. When I fill them in, who reviews it and takes off the "citations need" flagging headnote at the beginning of the article?

I see you've done a lot of work on this article. As for removing the templates from the top of the article, per Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle, you can remove each template yourself when that particular issue have been resolved. If someone disagrees, they'll revert your edit and add them back. If you disagree, then you can discuss the issues on Talk:Jennifer O'Neill and come to a consensus on how the article can be further improved.

BattyBot suggestions

Hi, BattyBot changed {{Unreferenced}} to {{Refimprove}} in this edit, perhaps because there was a Ref or References tag present, but these were actually just footnotes to a track listing, not citations. I suggest that BattyBot should not make this change where the Ref or References tag includes a group= parameter.

It also removed blank lines between tracks. These are not essential but are helpful when editing, which is probably why they are included both in the documentation of Template:Track listing and in the various presets which are listed at the foot of that page. Again, it would be appreciated if you could stop BattyBot removing blank lines within {{track listing}}. – Fayenatic (talk) 18:31, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Ah. One of my concerns, raised at Wikipedia talk:Citing sources#Spaces within citations, is very similar to one that was just rejected with your consent at Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Bugs/Archive 20#citation whitespace removal goes the wrong way. Mind you, that request was probably overly ambitious. Do you think it is worth me raising specific bug reports for removal of whitespace before the closing </ref>, and before/after pipes within citations? – Fayenatic (talk) 13:53, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Yes, the AWB developers usually respond quickly, but I have many bugs still open, and others that have been rejected or moved to feature requests. I've noticed that the developers like to see consensus before changing AWB, as they rightfully don't want to do anything that will cause a controversy. In the two cases above, I included links to the relevant section of the MOS or the template documentation showing that consensus was already established, and AWB was not adhering to the consensus. Since the developers don't intentionally design AWB to go against consensus, I considered these bugs.

Edits that are just whitespace addition or removal do cause controversy if they don't impact how the article is rendered. Some people feel such edits "clog" watchlists, and should not be done with automated or semi-automated tools. With no established consensus, some people will be upset if whitespace is added, and others will be upset if whitespace is removed. Unless you can reference a part of the MOS that AWB is not adhering to, my guess is I don't think they'll consider it a bug, and I don't think it will be a popular feature request. My Newbie Observations / Comments

As a "newbie" I have learned rather quickly (and which I really should not have expected any differently) that this place is really just a microcosm of life and people in general. Some people are just very, very nice helpful and great folks. There are others who are total jerks and arrogant assholes I waste my time with like arguing with a table. I'd say that's a pretty accurate statement. Most are in the middle - people who have good intentions and are trying to do the right thing to improve the articles, but may not sufficiently explain their intentions in the small edit summary box. (For example, when your change from "O'Neill" to "Jennifer O'Neill" was reverted, the editor mentioned the "MOS". It would have been more helpful if he provided a link to WP:LASTNAME instead.) Another challenge is that by communicating via wiki we don't have the benefit of seeing each others' facial expressions and hear each others' tone, which is a large part of how we interpret communication.

There have been times when I've gotten so upset that I've found it best to just walk away from the computer for a while. After a while, I've found that when I start a conversation at another editor's talk page or at an article talk page, most everyone remembers WP:CIVIL. If not, then I move on to work on one of the other 3,860,024 articles.

Dead end pages

BattyBot is removing template:Dead end tags where they clearly should be, such as Pasig river rehabilitation (one link) or Shift-share analysis (no links). The template says "This article needs more links to other articles to help integrate it into the encyclopedia." It's basically a more specific version of template:Wikify... Hi Skullers! Each article has one wikilink (see the References section of Shift-share analysis), and User:BattyBot states it will "Remove {{Dead end}} from articles with at least one wikilink". The purpose of the task is to remove the template on those articles that no longer need it - either because the person who tagged it did so in error, or someone else fixed it after it was tagged. I've added wikilinks to both of the articles. GoingBatty (talk) 01:17, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

But they do need it.. they are tagged because, like the template says, they need more wikilinks, not just zero links.. The tag in Twinkle says: "{{dead end}}: article has few or no links to other articles". Same as template:orphan with few or no incoming links... Seems that the text in Template:Dead end is not consistent with the definition in Wikipedia:Dead-end pages. Hi....me again...a question re: the actress Jennifer O'Neill article. When you did a citation check, it resulted in two cites becoming "unreliable". Could you tell me how this happened ? Because now, another user has retagged the article as having "Multiple issues" I suspect because of the unreliable citation issue, which tag I removed when I cleaned up the cites, at least I thought so.... Using the "View history" tab on an article, you can see the changes each editor made to the article. My edits on February 6 were these. It was User:WikiDan61 who added the "unreliable source" notes in this edit by using the {{rs}} template.

I see you added a sentence about O'Neill's notability in the "Early life" section. WikiDan61 moved it to the lede paragraph in this edit where it belongs.

References don't use the term

The article is about a pejorative term, "Dal Khor," but this term is not mentioned in the references cited. In other words, they are not references, at least not for this article. Help !!! Please Help !! No pun intended but....I AM REALLY GOING BATTY NOW

Re: The Jennifer O'Neill article, I need some help....please, no pun on your name, but I really am JUST GOING BATTY. There is another user MikeWaznowski who keeps undoing my edits, and maintenance tagging the article for three reasons (as you can see). I have tried to communicate with him, and attempted to SPECIFICALLY address the issues he raised, alas, with no consensus. He does NOT tell me how to change it / what he finds objectionable and I keep going around in circles. I have even asked him to make those changes HIMSELF. But he has threatened to edit block me, and tag me for conflict of interest .... Huh????

I have requested editor assistance because I want to get a third party involved, since ABSOLUTELY NOTHING I do seems to satisfy him; it seems to be getting personal with him now...., and I do not know why. I sincerely think that ANYTHING I DO to cure his "defects, issues" will never, ever satisfy him. You know, it is very easy to delete, destroy, be negative, and I think people do that just because they can. It takes more time and effort to be positively constructive AS YOU HAVE MOST GENEROUSLY BEEN !! (THANKS !!!!!!)

I can see from his own talk page @ MikeWiznowski that other users have had questions of him from his edits / reverts of various articles, and in a number of cases, he just ignores them, does not answer and is of no help at all.

Catscan and the notability tag inside a multiple issue box

I have reverted several of your bot edits in the category Martial Arts by breaking out the notability tag so that Catscan can find the articles with notability issues. In the case of the Jon Bluming article, you have now manually reverted my reverts with the comment "Catscan can find Category:All articles with topics of unclear notability whether {{notability}} is in Multiple issues or not".[3]

When I run Catscan on the category martial arts searching for notability tags[4], it finds 80 articles, not including Jon Bluming.

When I run Catscan on the category martial arts intersecting with category All_articles_with_topics_of_unclear_notability[5], it finds the same 80 articles.

When I look directly in category:All_articles_with_topics_of_unclear_notability [6] or [7], I do not find the Jon Bluming article (even thought the multiple issues box has a notability tag).[8]

I know you're a UDel football fan, so I was wondering if you'd have interest in creating any or all the 1946, 1963, 1971, 1972, 1979, and 2003 season articles? As you can see on {{Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens football navbox}}, those are the most prominently displayed seasons since they were all national championship years. Thomas Hodges (artist)

Hi, I saw that you have been making some "rational" changes to the article on Thomas Hodges. I am a gallerist with a gallery that represents Hodges in Taiwan. I was asked to add links to the Hodges article to enable the "orphaned" tag to be removed, which I note you did (thank you). Since doing this, the article has come under attack from an editor name "Hoary", who seems to have a bias against the article. I am not competent to edit this article to the degree that is now required, whilst at the same time having to counter Mr. Hoary's reciprocation. Would you be willing to edit this article in full or can you tell me how I can source an experienced Wikipedia editor to do this? Hi Expoarts! I'm assuming that Hoary was acting in good faith by requesting independent reliable sources that directly support the information in an article. To add references, I first read the references that existed on the page, and used them for other sections of the article. I then used Google to find more by doing searches such as "Thomas Hodges" "Met Art" and looking for results that were not copied from Wikipedia or Hodges' web site. Hope this helps! Ok, thank you. I reversed some changes made by TheMindsEye, who misunderstood a "Nominee Award" as being only a "nomination". In both the Spider Awards and the Color Awards (Masters Cup), "Nominee Award" is an award in its own right, in addition to being a nomination. It was actually correct as written, prior to edit. In the article, citations are requested for the section relating to inspirations. On Hodges' own website he quotes on his biography page his inspirations. However, I understand that it is not allowed to reference the artist's own website (ref Hoary: "No, no, you can't source claims for the man's achievements to his own website or blog. Independent sourcing, please."). However, as it is only Hodges himself who can state who and what inspires him, how can a citation other than that from the artist himself be used? BattyBot + Wikify tags

I noticed that BattyBot removed the "Wikify" tag from Ruth Gledhill. Is it possible to configure the bot not to remove wikify tags? As I said in this discussion, I think that this tag is far too subtle to be removed automatically. I rarely allow AWB to add or remove the tag, and that's when I have the article in front of me. Hi John! I could turn off the Auto tag feature, but that would also prevent other actions, such as the addition of {{orphan}}, {{deadend}}, and {{wikify}}. In this specific case, I think that the edit which added the tag was incorrect - the edit summary indicates that {{citation style}} would have been more appropriate. I've updated the references, which I hope addresses this article's issue. If it still needs to be wikified, I hope an editor will use the |reason= parameter when adding {{wikify}}. Thanks! I have a question. Why did you "disambiguate" There and Back as an instrumental CD on the Rock Instrumental page. As far I know, Wired, Blow By Blow and There and Back are the only completely instrumental releases by Jeff Beck, but you removed There And Back. Hi Areyoureadyeddy! When you added the link in this edit, the link went to the page There And Back. This is a disambiguation page which lists several albums, TV shows, and books with a title similar to There and Back. In my edit I fixed the link so it takes the user to There and Back (Jeff Beck album), but ensured that it still appears to the user as There and Back.

Please note that I did NOT remove There and Back from List of rock instrumentals. If you go to the article you'll see it's still listed. Just a brief question, re: wiki page rankings in a google search

Hi...just a brief question re: Jennifer O'neill article. Do the wiki maintenance tags have the negative effect of tagging the article for deletion or negative in some respect ?

I noticed that now when "Jennifer O'Neill" is typed in to a Google search query, this wiki article was almost always there second or third at least behind her official webpage. Now, it does not come up AT ALL. Is there something you can tell that someone has done to cause this change in its page rankings?

Hi Taninao. The maintenance tags on Jennifer O'Neill are not requesting deletion of the article from Wikipedia. They're only asking passionate editors such as yourself to add third-party references and make the text more encyclopedic.

Don't know why the article isn't showing up on the first few pages of Google's results - even if you search for "Jennifer O'Neill" site:en.wikipedia.org. It could be the maintenance tags, or it could be something else. This page on Google's web site would be a good place to start to find out more about their page rankings. Good luck! John Cale discography

I'm puzzled that Cale discography has been tagged as an orphan. It's just a discography, a list of records, but those records are full of wiki-links where appropriate. Hi Mick! The orphan template at the top of the article has a link to Wikipedia:Orphan, which defines an orphan as "a page with few or no links from other pages." So an orphan has to do with links TO the article, not wikilinks in the article. Special:WhatLinksHere/John Cale discography shows that John Cale is the only article that links to John Cale discography. When I tagged the article as an orphan in this edit in May 2010, my guess is that I had not yet set up AWB to only tag articles as orphans that have zero incoming links. Recent BRFA

Hi GoingBatty. I was looking through some recent BRFAs and saw that your bot had one approved to "change {{Unreferenced}} to {{BLP sources}}</nowiki> if article is in Category:Living people". My understanding is that if a BLP article is unreferenced it should use {{BLP unsourced}}, which specifies that there are no sources in the article, not {{BLP sources}}, which specifies that it needs additional references (implying there is already at least one reference). Hi Jenks24! You're right: {{Unreferenced}} should be changed to {{BLP unsourced}}. I see that I made a typo in Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/BattyBot 8 and typed {{BLP sources}} in error. However, the AWB general fix that User:BattyBot uses is to change "{{Unreferenced}} to {{BLP unsourced}} if article is in Category:Living people". Sorry about the confusion! Thanks for editing List of professional cyclists who died during a race. I wanted to mention that one of the fixes that AWB did was actually incorrect. The title of this column is "1950's Biographies - Dave Bedwell" not "1950s Biographies - Dave Bedwell". Wanted to let you know that I've reverted your change of this reference's title back to it actual name.
The List is in the middle of a major restructuring into Tables so some mistakes have slipped by - your AWB caught Dusseldorf/Düsseldorf and Triathalon/Triathlon. In looking over your AWB changes I figured out that I had to clean up an extra 'ref name'. Please continue to take an interest in this List...I am considering possibly putting it up for Featured List status and need all the help I can get! Quite an appropriate name for BattyBot

Twice now BattyBot has changed categories to links at User:AussieLegend/Newcastle International Sports Centre with the edit summary "changed article categories to links per WP:USERNOCAT using AWB". WP:USERNOCAT does not say to change cats to links at all. It says "If you copy an article from mainspace to userspace and it already contains categories, remove them or comment them out". Since the cats at User:AussieLegend/Newcastle International Sports Centre are commented out per WP:USERNOCAT BattyBot shouldn't be making the changes. First, I apologize for my initial edit on User talk:BattyBot rather than here. I didn't notice the notice at the top of that page (I would recommend an editnotice). Feel free to move this to unite it with the previous discussion.

Thanks for adding <pre>. I tried other methods, and for me it's by far the best method of disabling categories. (If I understand how the bot finds pages to edit, it should only go to pages containing inappropriate active article categories, which my userspace pages never do.)

As for intentionally redlinked categories, I have seen various ones around, but I don't know how prevalent the practice is, and I think there's no need for the bot to make a special effort to deal with them. I recently discovered that "Soul DNA" was written by another Jennifer O'Neill with the same name ( was researching it to try to possibly buy it) anyway I discovered it was some psychic with the same name, so deleted it from her list of books AND I EXPLAINED THE REVISION, DELETION, but someone undid it and put it back anyway even after I explained it.... and then you CORRECTLY reverted that person's put back (you and I were both right ... but you were better perhaps in including an amazon reference, maybe i shud have) I wonder why people keep doing stuff like that .... it seems that they do changes just for the sake of doing changes .... kind of frustrating ...sometimes it is better to just leave well enough alone .... Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Polluted category template

Hi Rich. The {{polluted category}} template prevents the category from being listed on Wikipedia:Database reports/Polluted categories. For each article category on the report (e.g. Category:Living people), I comment out the category if it's contained on a user sandbox page. For article categories created by templates, such as Category:Articles containing Croatian language text, there's not much that can be done. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 01:41, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi Dan56! I was trying to make the citation consitent with the rest of the references in the article. I apologize for not referencing Template:Cite news#Optional parameters in my edit summary, which states:

• location: City of publication (e.g., "Toronto" for The Globe and Mail) should be included if the city of publication is not part of the name of the newspaper
• publisher: The publisher that publishes the news source (not to be used for the name of the news source itself; see the newspaper parameter). This is commonly omitted for major publications. In some instances (e.g. many UK newspapers), the publisher is the company or organization that owns the publication. In all American newspapers, the publisher is an individual person, whose name will be found on the masthead. There is never any need to cite this person in a reference. This parameter should normally be left blank.

How to do ... an editing question

Hi... I have a question. In re: the Jennifer O'Neill article (again), in her filmography the entry for 1977 and the movie Sette note in nero , do you think it should read: Sette note in nero (original title) The Psychic. That way the title in English is apparent. And by the way, there is a wiki link to the sette note in nero. And if you think it would be appropriate, how do you do the editing of the boxes and lines ??? got no idea...

   Also there is a misclassification I caught.  In her filmography for the year 1997 there are

3 movies, the first is The Corporate Ladder . You can double check this as shown below, but the Internet Movie Data Base, Imdb, shows this was a TV movie (cable television movie),

not a threatrical release; so really, it should go down into the next section for "Television"
along with all the other TV movies and should read:  

1997 The Corporate Ladder Irene Grace Playboy TV-Movie .

And by the way Playboy TV is also listed in wiki, but again I have no idea how you link it and edit the lines and boxes. Please advise how to, or maybe you can do, etc. thanks....

Democratic elections

There were NOT ever truely democratic elections in Liberia before 1997. First, for most of the country's history, there was only one party and one contestant in elections. Other times, the country was under military rule and the "elections" were shams where the ruling general was the only contestant.

Mr. George Andrews, though under direct threat from the president (documented in a local paper) did not buckle and kept the election free and fair. That was the first time that happened in Liberia. I think your edit was in error.

Too large to paste to a single wiki page, so I've uploaded it here as a 7-zip file, should be simple for you to take from there. en-wiki mainspace only. Unzipped it's a 2 MB tab-separated text file that you can open as a spreadsheet. Format is articletitle, badparam, badparamvalue, goodparam, goodparamvalue, template name. fiction category

Regarding you post on the WP:RFCBOARD: I would like to suggest how to improve on the current architecture of wikipedia. Unfortunatly(fortunatly) all articles on wikipedia are in one bag. But this makes it very difficult to distinguish fiction from fact ... especially about films,cartoons, tv series, etc.

I propose to add the Category "fiction", so that it will be visible in the adress bar.
Example:

-should be-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/fiction/Star_Trek

genre citations

im sorry to be a bother but many users editing the album Three cheers for sweet revenge and the black parade are claiming that we can no longer cite allmusic for genres, since allmusic puts their genre list under styles. these users keep changing those albums to pop rock because the only genre allmusic lists for rock albums is just that.

I take issue with this because every other album on wikipedia uses allmusics styles as citations for genres and it makes no sense for them to say we cannot know, especially since claiming those two albums are pop/rock would mean they would have to change every other rock album to that since allmusic says that about every rock album.

If you could please explain to these users about how wikipedia cites allmusic i would be extremely grateful. if you could direct this message to a user who knows this subject better please do so because it is wrong of them to put such strictures on allmusic citations when such strictures have never existed before.

my problem is that i have tried to talking to them, but they refuse to listen. Allmusic does list the genres im using but they refuse to use it because it refers to them as styles instead of genre. A few months ago, I reported that AWB was changing Unreferenced tags to Refimprove for articles that only contain ref group tags, and the developers fixed that. Please don't make changes such as www.depeche.fr to depeche.fr as web addresses - though often a redirect exists the two are different web addresses and can refer to different works.

Presuming you're refering to this edit, I see that meretmarine.com, depeche.fr, and objectif-ofp.org refer to the same works as www.meretmarine.com, www.depeche.fr, and www.objectif-ofp.org. Note that the External links section contains two domain names without the "www" prefix.

Template talk:Cite web/Archive 6 has some discussion from editors who believe that using the domain name in the |work= parameter is not appropriate at all, but that's a different issue.

Using the full citation is normally the fastest way to fix it/the ground problem. I'm trying to clear the ibid backlog more or less regular, but when I get to articles like Edwin Hurlbut, then I have to work for some days on it to fix the citations (in this case there were also references using the wrong publication date, etc.; work on progress on this article). If somebody really wants to improve an article (say to GA status), then he/she can fix the citation style using his/her preferred format or any other format. Trimdon Grange

Hi, BattyBot has marked Trimdon Grange as requiring additional citation. Whilst it is a stub, that which is there seems to be sufficiently cited. The biggest single section is on the pit disaster, and most of that is drawn from the coroner's report. Hi Martin! In December 2009, Smackbot tagged the article as an unreferenced stub. BattyBot noticed that the article is no longer unreferenced, so it changed the tag to {{refimprove}}, since it takes a human to determine when an article is fully referenced. I was hoping that Albert Brallisford and George Bradshaw might have a web reference that could be copied over to Trimdon Grange, but they only referenced the Football League Players' Records book. Old pal, the AWB typo rule "Titled" needs to be reined in, I think. Dictionary.cambridge.org (British English) has a definition for "entitled":

BattyBot changing templates that don't refer to the entire article

It appears that BattyBot tasks 4 and 10 are changing templates from has-none to has-some versions, even when the template appears somewhere other than the top of the article or the references section, or has been given a parameter referring to something other than the article. See, for example, [9], [10], [11]. A related example is [12]: I think the problem there is that {{No footnotes}} may have said "article or section" by default before and was inserted without a parameter originally, and nobody got around to changing it. Perhaps BattyBot should change things it finds in sections without parameters to {{No footnotes|section}} instead. Also, {{unreferenced}} in a section can be changed to {{unrefsect}} instead. (I can see why {{nofootnotes}} with no parameter in the References section would make sense to change though.) If this detection is a bug in AWB that can't be worked around, then maybe there is a way to stop doing 4 and 10 until AWB is fixed? I didn't put this on User talk:BattyBot because I didn't want to necessarily halt the bot unless there's no other way. --Closeapple (talk) 17:04, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

I've reviewed all the examples, and taken the following actions:

• I haven't seen {{No footnotes}} used in the middle of a References section before. I reverted the first three edits you provided, and opened up this AWB bug report.
• While waiting for the bug fix, I came up with a workaround. I ensured that it skips the first three examples you mentioned, so I restarted the bot.
• For example 4, I don't think {{No footnotes}} is appropriate, so I changed it to {{Unreferenced section}}.
• I updated my AWB feature request to include changing {{No footnotes}} to {{No footnotes|section}} and {{Unreferenced}} to {{Unreferenced section}} when immediately following a section header.

Elmer Wexler: remove "more citations" template?

BattyBot changed template at Elmer Wexler from no citations to more citations.

I had added some references recently, and I removed the template today but undid my edit when I noticed it had recently been changed.

Do you think it still needs more inline citations? It's a very stubby article (which I didn't write), and it has a bunch of references now.

I couldn't find any guidelines for this, though I'm sure they're there somewhere.

AWB can only disambiguate one link on a page. I find that most pages that require disambiguation have more than one link that need fixing. The Dab Solver interface is the one I like best, and it's great for looking at all the pages in a WikiProject, but WPCleaner allows me to quickly load all pages that link to a certain word. Would you object to undoing this? "First and only" and "only" are definitely not synonyms - at his death Claude Choules was the only surviving WW1 veteran, but certainly wasn't the first WW1 veteran; likewise, to say Parachute Reconnaissance Company 17 was "the only Swiss parachute company" completely loses the nuances of "first and only parachute company" as it then has to be explained separately that it had no predecessors. Bot added unwanted colon

Hi, with this edit (which was admittedly over a week ago), BattyBot inserted an unwanted colon, changing {{FULLPAGENAME}} into {{FULLPAGENAME:}} and breaking the {{Commons category}} in the process. BattyBot: Task 9 false positives

BattyBot seems to have encountered a large number of Task 9 false positives on April 2, 2012. It erroneously identified numerous userbox and user categories as article categories and converted the categories to links. See [13][14][15][16][17][18]. I have fixed these six instances, but there appear to be more: [19][20][21][22].

I haven't found a way to ensure the bot can accurately do the task unsupervised, so I look at each edit before saving, which means I haven't run it very much since the conversation at User talk:BattyBot#Bot changing things_on user's sandbox. Hi Kelenna! If you're interested in creating your own user page (i.e. User:Kelenna), I suggest copying formats you like from other editors. (Just make sure you don't copy any awards or other info that doesn't relate to you.) You can then look at the code that creates each item to decide what you want to keep and what you don't.

AWB & multiple issues

Hi, I don't have a problem with you making sure AWB uses {{multiple issues}} correctly, we all want it to be accurate. However, I'm pretty sick of the amount of changes I've had to make to support this one template. So, I plan to change the logic to use the new-style template per your feature request, and remove the old-style logic. Your most recent bug reports prove to me that the old-style template was too complicated to have in 'general' fixes. What I want to achieve is a simple implementation that has standard ignore comments logic and needs to know about a list of maintenance templates, section templates/section parameters, a threshold for insertion of multiple issues and hopefully nothing else. I don't want to keep/develop logic that template x is added/handled differently, or template y cannot be added because of parameter z, or template a and b are the same though names are different etc. So, I'd like you to help me with this by agreeing the logic up front (if the new-style multiple issues continues to need per-template exceptions I would drop any use of multiple issues in AWB, the exceptions are too much of a drain on my time), and you creating the entries in template redirects as needed. You've got a very hard job trying to keep AWB up to date as other editors change the definition of {{multiple issues}} (and {{dead end}}, and {{wikify}}, and so on). I'd be more than willing to work with you on this project, and hope I can learn more about the AWB code in the process, so I can do more than just report bugs. WP:AWB/TR and WP:AWB/RTP are great ways for us to improve the usability of AWB without modifying the code. How do you feel about having similar functionality for Multiple issues so we can maintain a list of those templates that are appropriate to be merged into Multiple issues? Thanks! Just had a chance to test version 1.15, and it's much better. Two suggestions:

1. Since {{dn}} and {{ambiguous link}} redirect to {{disambiguation needed}}, I don't see why it is valuable to present three options. It would be one less click if it always used {{disambiguation needed}}.

2. Instead of adding {{disambiguation needed}}, could it add {{disambiguation needed|date={{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}}}} instead?

I changed the parameter name, you need to configure 2 parameters for this to work correctly: dab_ask_help_templates_after for every template that you can use in WPCleaner after a disambiguation link to request for help, and dab_help_asked_templates_after for every template that can be used to request for help (to detect them). Hi Fracati2! It was User:Zujua who added the {{notability}} and {{unreferenced}} tags to Caritas Ticino in this edit. After references were added to the article, my bot changed {{unreferenced}} to {{refimprove}} in this edit. I hope you can use your journalism background to add references that show coverage in verifiable, reliable, independent secondary sources per the notability guideline for organizations.

My bot also added {{orphan}} and {{uncategorized}}. In addition to the link you added from Eugenio Corecco, I added a link from Francesco Faà di Bruno, so it's now de-orphaned. Some categories have been added, but it would be helpful it you could make sure they are correct and specific enough.

I've added a very simple lead section and hope you and others will expand it so there is an adequate introduction and summary to the article. I've replaced the {{sfn}} templates with <ref></ref> tags to remove the links that don't do anything.

AWB Bug idea

What would you think about a log bug action on AWB? That way you could press a button, and it would log the bug and provide the page where the bug appeared. Interesting idea, Ryan. I'd prefer a menu option instead of a button that would take up valuable real estate on the screen. I can envision that if you were using the newest SVN, the action could create a new section on WP:AWB/B and automatically populate the site URL, operating system, .NET verstion, and AWB version. If you weren't, you'd be taken to http://toolserver.org/~awb/snapshots/ and encouraged to download the newest SVN and retry. When I report a bug, I don't save the edit, so the developers can reproduce the issue. However, others like to save the edit and then report the bug. Some thought would have to go into which method is preferable, or if the user should have the option. I look forward to seeing this as a feature request! I didn't update "New Hampshire_" since I'm assuming the underscore means the intent is to exclude "new Hampshirite" because of cases where new & Hampshirite are both adjectives (same as "New Mexico" rule). Even though the <ref> tag in the code has only the first reference, the references as presented to the reader looked fine. In the code, the <ref> tag could say <ref name="Blake 2008 246"/> or <ref name="Blake 2008 246, Mason 2005 223-225"/> or <ref name="foobar">, as long as the {{harvnb|Blake|2008|p=246}}: (secondary source); {{harvnb|Mason|2005|pp=223–225}}: (primary source). looks OK to the user. Hi Dan! Looking at the edit history for Xtreme Ice Skating, it seems the chain of events is as follows:

• User:Bearcat added {{uncategorized}} to the article
• User:Mercurywoodrose added Category:Ice skating and removed {{uncategorized}}
• Mercurywoodrose immediately noticed that the Ice skating category doesn't exist (indicated by the redlink), and changed it to Category:Skating
• My bot User:BattyBot added {{Multiple issues}} and {{orphan}} to the article.

Hmmm - Template:Primary sources/doc says to use {{tl|Primary sources|BLP=yes}}, while {{BLP primary sources}} says it's a wrapper for {{Primary sources}} with the |BLP=yes parameter. Doesn't seem that there's a difference in what's displayed to the reader anyway. As long as AWB isn't changing {{tl|Primary sources|BLP=yes}} to {{tl|BLP primary sources}} (or worse, changing it to {{tl|BLP primary sources|BLP=yes}}), I'm not sure it matters. Thoughts? WPCleaner for fixing spelling and typography

Hi,

Would you be interested in testing WPCleaner for fixing spelling and typography on enwiki ? Or know someone else that could be interested ? It's based on regular expressions defined for AWB in Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos. I'm currently testing it on frwiki and it seems to be almost working.

If you're interested, you just need to create User:GoingBatty/WikiCleanerConfiguration with the following :

WPCleaner is written in Java, so the regexp engine is not exactly the same as the one used by AWB, and I also have made different design choices ; so some AWB rules won't work (it's possible to also define rules in WPCleaner format).

For "each others", it may be the (?= ) at the end that is misinterpreted. Is it necessary ? Can it be replaced by \b (word boundary) ? I need to analyse the problem.

You can open a lot of articles in WPCleaner by using a list and then running the Full analysis for several pages in the list at a time (not only typos, every analysis : dab, Check Wiki, ...). But it's not working like AWB so it's probably not easy as to use for really repetitive tasks.

You can use several pages if you want for defining rules. WPCleaner also has its own regular expressions engine, so you can also define rules in this format (some AWB rules are rejected because the constructs are different). Pages with WPCleaner regexp are defined using general_suggestions instead of general_suggestions_typo. An example page on frwiki : fr:Wikipédia:Liste de fautes d'orthographe courantes.

When using WPCleaner to disambiguate links, the user chooses the proper link from a list. Would there be value in having WPCleaner suggest a list of corrections for typos too? For example, if it finds "consideres", it could suggest "considered" or "considers" per this conversation. Thanks!

Not sure I understand because it's already working that way. If you use WPCleaner regexp instead of AWB, you can have several suggestions for one rule (for example, on frwiki if we find "emploit" the suggestion is "emploi" or "emploie"). Ah, I finally figured out that diff. You did a few helpful things, but the script seemed to remove just one space around the equal sign in the accessdate field. So "accessdate = April 5, 2012" becomes "accessdate =April 5, 2012" which is VERY difficult to catch in a diff, and plus it messes with people who have OCD (sorry, I meant "CDO", there, now the letters are alphabetical) about their wikisyntax... :) • Jesse V.<sup>(talk)</sup> 03:48, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

There are passionate people on both sides of this discussion, and I can understand arguments on both sides. The only thing I would contribute is that it seems to me that whatever consensus is made for John, Paul, George & Ringo's band should apply to EVERY band, and therefore the poll should be much wider, which means many more people spending a lot more time on this topic. I'm using Dab solver to make those edits, which automatically makes those edit summaries. Walk forward

Hi! Recently I made some changes to the "Walk Forward" page. I am new to the Wikipedia, but on this particular page, I would delete almost everything below the first 2 paragraphs. It is a talkative, manual style text. On the other hand, I would probably add the picture from Bob Pardo's book (page 252), and maybe add some views on problems of methodology. Bad {{multiple issues}} edit

In this edit, BattyBot screwed up the {{multiple issues}} template, probably by incorrectly assuming that since at least one new-style parameter was present that the unnamed parameter 1 would be the last parameter when it inserted the {{refimprove}} and {{orphan}} templates. BattyBot problem

I understand that this is more of an AWB issue, but are you able to modify a custom module so that BattyBot either stops adding {{Wikify}} or uses {{underlinked}} in cases like this edit? Ryan Vesey 18:49, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

I've never made a custom module, but I think a simple find and replace rule to change "{{wikify|date={{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}}}}" to "{{underlinked|date={{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}}}}" could work too until the AWB developers update the general fixes. WPCleaner 1.19

Hi, I have completely refactored WPCleaner in version 1.19 for the spell-checking feature. It now works suggestion by suggestion, instead of going through the article trying each suggestion. Many changes are induced by this :

• It seems a lot faster :)
• It better deals with AWB regular expressions (I can work differently with AWB and WPC regexp),
• If regular expressions take more than 1 second on an article, a trace is displayed in the Java console. That allowed me to fix 2 regular expressions on frwiki, that were taking between 95 and 99% of the time.

With this modifications, on a very big article in frwiki that was taking 800 seconds to analyze on my laptop, it now takes only 7 seconds.

I have tested 1.19 only on frwiki, seems ok, but it probably needs some testing on enwiki.

Thanks for letting me know, NicoV! I've noticed that WPCleaner 1.18 was much slower than previous versions, which I assumed was the spell-checking. I've installed WPCleaner 1.19 and will try it out over the next few days. There have been several editors improving the rules at WP:AWB/T. It seems that pages with spelling and typography issues (such as 2012 Florida State Seminoles football team and 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane) take much longer to load than those that don't have spelling and typography issues (such as List of albums scheduled for release in 2013). The last article in those examples is small (15Kb) so perhaps it is because of the size, can you find an example large article that doesn't have spelling and typography issues but still loads reasonably quickly? Looks like you were right and I was wrong. The Beatles took over 10 minutes to analyze with version 1.19, and WPCleaner didn't find any issues. NicoV - do you have an older version of WPCleaner (pre-typo checking) that you can use to compare load times, and try to figure out how to speed it up for a future version? Thanks! On my tests on frwiki, I only encountered that kind of analyze times with some rules that were not very efficient, but after fixing the rules analyze took a reasonable time (for example, on fr:Liste de résolutions du Conseil de sécurité des Nations unies, analyze took about 800 seconds before, 20 seconds after fixing the rules, and then 7 seconds with the code changes in 1.19). When analyzing The Beatles, WPCleaner issues warnings for a few rules on the Java console, which account for most of the time spent analyzing :

So, more than 15mn due to the last 5 five rules. Can you try fixing them? I know for example that (?<!...) at the beginning of a rule is highly inefficient, because the lookbehind is then tested at every position in the text. It's a lot faster if you move this part after to really speed up the analysis, even if you have to write a bigger rule (cf. my changes on frwiki: 1 and 2). With efficient rules, 1.19 should be faster, but it can be slower if too many inefficient rules exist. --NicoV (talk) 05:17, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

I could also try a few things in WPCleaner when I encounter very slow rules, but fixing the rule should give a huge improvement :

• Totally deactivate rules starting with a lookbehind, but that would mean not being able to detect those errors.
• When a rule takes more than a few seconds, don't check the rest of the article with it

To display the Java console is dependent on the Operating System you're running. A few examples: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/javaconsole.xml for Windows, http://www.ehow.com/how_7255734_enable-java-console-mac.html for Mac. Good to see that updating the last five rules gave a huge performance boost. I will check this evening, but most of the remaining time is probably spent on the first rule (A to An). The first rule was only taking 13 seconds in its previous form. I've just tested again The Beatles, spell checking takes about 13 seconds, and only 3 rules took more than 100ms (-tionally 125ms, -ceive 199ms, Gbit 212ms). I have just embarked on the long-overdue rewrite of the sources script in my test space. I am also attempting to lay down my thoughts as to how it should work at User:Ohconfucius/script/Sources#General_principles. FYI, the working test module is named function Ohc_sourcename. Note that this is very much work in progress, and that the module will supplant some of the regex currently residing in function Ohc_news_sources(). Your thoughts and advice, particularly as to the organisation/flow of the various tasks, would be much appreciated.

I like where you cited the {{citation}} documentation. If there's any other template documentation or MOS documents you can cite, I suggest you do so to prevent negative feedback about your script.

I'm not a script expert, so I'm not sure why you have two blocks. I did see a typo in two instances of '$1Herald SUn$2'. Since the "source name should be congruent with WP article namespace of same", why are you changing "Time.com" to "TIME" (uppercase).

Hi, you're now quite welcome to test out the new sources script. The basic structure is now in place. The old script is still there, but the new code (which incorporates some of the old cleanup code) is called by a sidebar button 'New source module'. So far, it acts only on those sources located inside citation templates (I haven't been able to design a module that converts other sources inside citations). Remember that its building blocks set out to firstly retrain the links to a traditional name per WP. Secondly, it would italicise or otherwise the source by switching "|work=" or "|publisher=". It does not yet cater for piped links. I've just been running it when I specific article I think it could work on, but I usually still need to supplement it with the old script for now. There isn't anything yet to test it against, as I haven't yet devised a test page, so it could be helpful if maybe you could set one up. • I've now ejected each of the 3 new key functions of the script into a subscript. In theory, the following sidebar buttons should load:

  5. Reclassify as WORK

FYI, I don't see the 'unlink' button (#6)– which probably indicates a fatal error in that part (sub-script3), but the composite button (New source module), which includes functions #4 and #5, works more or less as intended on the test page. If you're asking why references 3 & 4 on User:Vaughanster/Libertad Green don't appear with the correct links, it's because you're missing the http:// in each reference. However, neither http://www.seventeen.com/ not http://www.gotmilk.com/ are appropriate independent reliable sources because they don't mention Libertad Green. Wikify backlog

Hi, I'm pretty new so this might not be relevant. Whilst finding things to do I came across the wikify tag and then later the underlinked and dead end tags. Would it be possible for your bot to check through the wikify backlog and reclassify a lot of them as underlinked or dead ends where appropriate? Jamesmcmahon0 (talk) 11:34, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi Jamesmcmahon0 - welcome to Wikipedia! You're question is certainly a valid one. Back when I started working on Wikipedia almost 3 years ago, {{wikify}} meant "add more links to other articles". About 2 years ago, the definition of "wikify" changed to include lots of other things, such as "applying any form of wiki-markup, such as standard headings and layout, including the addition of infoboxes and other templates, or bolding/italicizing of text". So when someone manually added the {[tl|wikify}} template, it wasn't always easy to understand exactly what improvements they wanted done to the article. Therefore, I don't know of a way to program a bot to adequate tell if an article has been "wikified".

Having said that, my bot and I use a piece of software called AutoWikiBrowser. Although the definition of the definition of "wikify" changed, AWB continued to add and remove the {{wikify}} template based solely on the number of wikilinks.

Therefore, I am reviewing all of the instances where my bot and I used AWB to add {{wikify}}. For each of those articles, I am removing {{wikify}} and either adding more wikilinks or adding {{underlinked}}. So far I've updated over 500 pages but still have several hundred to go.

Thanks for your message, GoingBatty. I added the Wikify template despite deprecation as there are multiple issues and I did not think 5 templates were appropriate. But seeing as you insisted, I have done that. As you can see, Activity centre is very organised now with maintenance boxes now taking up more screen space than the content. Hi JamesA! You could use the {{Multiple issues}} template to mimimize the amount of space those templates take up. Instead, I made the following changes:

1. Moved {{No footnotes}} and {{Citation style}} to the References section
2. Added sections and removed {{Sections}}
3. Removed {{Lead rewrite}}, since addressing the {{Lead too long}} issue will require rewriting the lead.

Allmusic source

Hi Erick! One of AWB's general fixes is to remove italics from the |work= parameter. To get around this and still have the reference displayed properly, I'm now changing |work=''[[Allmusic]]'' to |publisher=Allmusic and removing |publisher=Rovi Corporation.
