Grahamwest
Hi Grahamwest, it is nice to meet you. I feel you did a good job with the Sardinian people article. I like the way you split up sentences that were too long and complicated. When it comes to writing encyclopedia articles, it is best to keep sentences simple and prevent them from being overly wordy. When I read through the text, there were a few spelling and punctuation errors that I found. You can see the changes I made to the article here. One thing I would like to point out is the proper use of commas since there were a few sentences with missing commas.
Examples 1: Dependent clauses
- "During the Middle Ages , the island was divided into four 'Giudicati'... "
Here, the phrase "During the Middle Ages" is a dependent clause, which is dependent on the independent clause (that is, the rest of the sentence). If the dependent clause comes before the independent, there should be a comma to separate it. If the dependent clause comes after the rest of the sentence, then none is needed. Example: "The island was divided into four Giudicati during the Middle Ages." No comma is needed when this word order is preferred.
Example 2: commas to separate coordinating conjunctions
- "The vast majority of the Sardinians are Roman Catholic , but there are also minorities of atheists and agnostics."
There should be a comma to separate two independent clauses. Because the second independent clause could be considered its own independent sentence—"There are also minorities."—it deserves a comma to separate it from the first sentence.
If you have any more questions or need me to further clarify things, let me know. Other than that, things look good! I am grateful for your effort in helping us copy edit all these articles! Happy editing! --Tea with toast (talk) 02:32, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
GOCEinuse tag
editHi Graham
Can you please ensure you put the {{GOCEinuse}} tag onto articles you are currently working on - it helps us identify them more quickly :¬)
I have added it for you. Chaosdruid (talk) 00:20, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
- I've only been putting it on an article when I'm actively working on it. I was away for several days and it felt unfair to the page's normal contributors to have them not touch it for the best part of a week. The template also says to remove the tag if the page hasn't been edited in a few hours. New Apostolic Church is such a big article it's going to take several more sessions to finish. The smaller articles, they only needed done in one session so I just put the tag on, edited the page and removed the tag when done.
- I understand and have removed the GOCE tag (I also discovered that the template notes recommend removal after 2 hours. That clearly does not cover larger articles like this as the one I did yesterday took 6.5 hours ! lol) - I would not want to step in to edit until you have finished with it :¬)
- We have nearly cleared the March 2009 articles now so perhaps you could consider removing the "copyedit needed" part, as you are clearly going to go through it again shortly, which will remove it from the backlog pages.
- Good luck with the next passes - I know how long they can seem when dealing with text like that!

GOCE drive news
edit Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats.
So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now.
We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal. Thank you for participating in the January 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success! Your drive coordinators –S Masters (talk), Diannaa (Talk), The UtahraptorTalk to me, and Tea with toast (Talk) |

GOCE drive invitation
editGreetings from the Guild of Copy Editors
The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting. This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated. We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". |
