Bratopoulosm

I'm just contacting you to let you know that Bratopoulosm's uploads have been verified- Universal Music Greece, the owners of the images, have contacted us, and said that Bratopoulosm's uploads have been completely authorised by them, and that they are happy for the images to be in the public domain. J Milburn (talk) 14:35, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

Well, now that this has been confirmed, I believe there was one of the Martakis images that was not placed in commons. Also, the two latter Paparizou images I find suspicious since the uploader's other images were deleted. They haven't been moved to commons yet and I think this should be done. I'd do it myself but i'm not quite sure how to. This way we will be able to find out if they are free images or not.GreekStar12 (talk) 20:44, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
You can upload to commons the same way you do here, except the only applicable licenses are free. You just have to make a commons account or look into the "unified login" which automatically makes an account in any wiki you edit. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 20:47, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
Well, i've uploaded to commons before, but I'm just not sure how to move an image to commons if its already on en-wiki. GreekStar12 (talk) 17:39, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
I believe there is a template that you can put on a page so that a bot will move it. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 18:50, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

I was just thinking...

Hey Stephen. This isn't that important, but I was just looking around a little bit and then I thought about the birth names on the Greek articles. Most of the English-speaking person-related articles have full birth names, including middle. Though I really never understood how they can get that info for someone who has been active just recently, lol. Well, there really isn't anything like that going on for the Greek people-related articles, except for a few whom have either changed their last names or go by a short form of their first name. It's not uncommon in Greece for people to not be given middle names, although some people do. The thing is, if they did, how would we possibly know? Speaking of this, I have come to a bit of confusion about Anna Vissi's birth name. Since Vissi is from Cyprus, their traditional pronunciation is different from Greece and they use 'sh' which Greek never uses (with the exception of Corfu). That may be the correct pronunciation of her last name, and explains why she went by the name Vishy in ESC 1982. I realize that this would not change the birth spelling of Vissi though, (though it may be something to mention in the lead in brackets). However, when I was making some Karvelas album articles, I saw a soundtrack or something titled Mia Hara, Mia Kaimos which credited her as Anna Vissy (ΒΙΣΣΥ). I've previously seen this spelling a number of times and also explains the 'y' instead of 'i' in Vishy, to reflect the Cypriot spelling. I do recall hearing something as well about Vissi having altered her name, but it would be nice if we could confirm this, if not by source, I wonder if there are any Cypriot users on wiki that would know, for curiosity's sake;)GreekStar12 (talk) 15:46, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

I feel like for the most part there really isn't much information on Greek artists available online and that most information is probably in magazines, news reports, etc. I'm guessing that since she entered for Cyprus in '82, they chose the Cypriot pronunciation since in '80 they used regular "Vissi" when she was in it for Greece. I think that as you look around there is a lot of different spellings for names depending on how you transliterate. For instance "Katy" Garbi, if you ask me, "Katy" is not a good translation because it is pronounced "cat-ee" which is not close to the Greek pronunciation. We just have to look for most common usage. I also would be interested in this Vissi name change thing so keep me posted. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 16:44, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Well, the pronunciation is not that big of a deal, since we do not have IPA right now as it is, but I think that the birth name is. The fact that she has been credited on an official album release (in 1975) as Vissy is enough to really include it as an alias. However, the thing here is that it is not a transliteration that I found in random English sites, but rather on official Greek media releases. This and the Eurovision, made me believe that her birth name must be Vissy and she dropped the y in Greece. Oh, and I used to think the same thing about Katy Garbi, but it all depends on how you look at it, really. It's pronunciation would actually be "Katie", and it is just an alternate spelling to that name as well, although it is rare. It's kind of unfortunate that if an artist's site spells their name one way then we pretty much have to comply with it (except in the case of Paparizou, which is unique). I don't think it really matters for Katy Garbi that much but it makes a big difference for Mariada Pieridi and Kalomoira.

PS: I responded about the genre issue on my talk page and went through a few different genres and details as well. GreekStar12 (talk) 23:47, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

Oh also, about the info, really, the best thing you can do is try to find a fansite or something that posts magazine articles and such. Literally the best info is in magazines (i mean official ones, Down Town, Nitro, Status etc, not tabloids, lol). Sometimes these are hard to find but if you look around there is usually always some obsessed fan or group or something that have a shrine and collect these things, lol. I found a site with Rouvas interviews and articles and it is making the article expansion I'm currently doing 100x easier, since I'm still trying to get it up to FA. If you find any articles in Greek and need a translation, I'd be glad to help out. GreekStar12 (talk) 23:58, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

On the El-Wikipedia there are templates for Greek representatives in the ESC, showing all of the singers who have participated, similar to the ESC winners template. Revere vs. Boston - Wonderland Amusement Park

I was wondering that myself when I read your edit comment. I cannot speak for the editor who moved the article to Wonderland Amusement Park (Boston), but when I was doing research for another park in several 1970s-vintage books, I noticed that they invariably refer to the major city served by the park, regardless of whether or not they were actually there. So whatever was in Revere was referred to as "Boston" as the closest nearby city. I can see why as those that were ascribed in Chicago were scattered throughout its suburbs - but you rarely hear about an amusement park in Plainfield, for example. Ditto Schenectady vs. Rexford (as one book called it "Luna Park, Albany"!) and so forth. The classic case is Boblo, commonly described as being in Detroit, but in fact is in Canada. 147.70.242.54 (talk) 17:25, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

From a content standpoint, using Boston did not make sense because the article currently says nothing about its relation to it. It seemed random. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 23:17, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Athens

I'm the one who added Athens to the list on the Greek American page. It wasnt in the source because it has a population below 1000 (iirc), but the numbers should be available on census.gov. However, the last time I tried to get them, I couldn't find the information on the site; it seems to be very difficult to use sometimes. I'll make another try later today, but if you can help I would appreciate that as well (the information is definitely real). -- Soap Talk/Contributions 12:46, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

I have always been told that Tarpon Springs has the highest concentration, but I guess that could just be because since it has a higher population, it is much more evident. Knowing that, and seeing "around 12%" made me suspicious. If a source is added, then it will be fine. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 12:49, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
I couldnt find anything. I suppose there could be some small towns in Florida that would beat Athens anyway, so I couldn't say for sure that Athens ranks first even if I could find the data. I'll agree to let it be removed for now. -- Soap Talk/Contributions 00:25, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
I just did a quick check and it seems that Athens has no Greeks? [1] Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 00:47, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
Well that's interesting. You found the page that I had tried so hard to find. I don't even remember where I read the "about 12%" figure anymore, but it obviously isn't true. I apologize for causing that misinformation to sit there for so long. -- Soap Talk/Contributions 01:21, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Yea, Legolas has his own way that he would like it written I guess, though it is grammatically correct or a natural way to word things. As for the sources, you don't need to source the information in the lead if it is sourced in the body per WP:LEAD. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 16:45, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

this undoing and adding the reference while undoing and the diatribe in the edit summary. --Legolas (talk2me) 15:48, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

It is a legitimate edit. I was mad about this edit here, that is why I was a little snappy. Who gives you the right to just come on and revert everyone's edits over the past 2-3 days with some summary as if you are improving the article? Look at the diff. You put the prices back in even though it was said it cannot include prices, restored the lead back to the poor grammar version you had written, said that bad romance was the final single, made "April" lowercase, removed half of the sourced entries in the release history, and changed the alternate cover back to "deluxe edition" even though the EP will be shipped random with either/or. You made quite a mess for me to try to restore the relevant information while heeding to your concerns such as the unconfirmed singles. Please be careful next time. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 15:57, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
Oh really. May I point you the basic rule of Wikipedia WP:RS and WP:V? Everything you added was unsourced and things that only a mad fan would be writing in Wikipedia. And who said that prices cannot be included when RS are including it? Bad Romance being a final single wasn't my edit. I'm not dumb to do such things, my credentials are an example. And don't remove the summary of the article from LEAD. --Legolas (talk2me) 16:06, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
Look at the diff, those are things that you changed, aka your edits. Also considering that there was nothing that was unsourced that i restored, I'm not sure what you are mad about. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 16:08, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
See, lets calm down. Our main goal should be to make the article as much GA worthy as possible. Adding WP:RECENTISM things like "gaga will release 4 singles" and "Telephone" which is still unconfirmed doesnot make it so! And at any point the lead needs to conform to wp:lead. Also release in Brazil and US were unsourced, so I removed them too. I agree that I might have delinked Teddy Riley, but I restored those revisions later. Now, god knows why another user is reverting every other additions. --Legolas (talk2me) 16:22, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
Did you even bother to look at what I changed or did you just see that the lead was reverted to the more grammatically correct version and assume I reverted everything. I did not restore telephone and the 4 singles as in the summary I said I was heeding to your legitimate concerns. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 16:25, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
Yes I did. But intermediate revisions were overlapping hence the good edits were initially reverted. Then one by one I was restoring them. Please if you would have just given sometime. I know my edit summary didnot help things and Im sorry for that, but please look now. Everything has been re-instated, unsourced info have been removed, lead conforms to wp:lead and even release hostory are sourced. We need alternate text now. --Legolas (talk2me) 16:32, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
I rewrote your lead days ago because I'm sorry, but it was just poor English before. Tenses were messed up, grammar, spelling, spacing, you name it. As usual, you are more than welcome to add stuff to the lead, but do not continually change it back to the version you wrote entirely by yourself. The lead before you reverted did accurately conform to wp:lead so I don't know what you are talking about. Also, please see WP:NOPRICES. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 16:42, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
If I may quickly add to the 4 singles thing, I was the person who originally deleted the improper source for that information. That editor, responding to my edit summary about an improper source, later linked to the article I had checked in adding the information back to the article. I'm satisfied with the new source as it's from Gaga's own Web site and that information may now stay in the article. "Telephone" still has not been confirmed and, until properly sourced, is to be deleted. CycloneGU (talk) 17:21, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

(Outdent)Hey sorry guys (or girls, i don't knw which :)) I became offline yesterday. The article looks really good knows. Kudos to all of you. We just need wp:alt text now for the two images. --Legolas (talk2me) 03:45, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

RE:

the guideline is for external links (Wikipedia:External_links) which were basically spammed in all the pages i cleaned up external links on. as for the Category, it seems apparent to be self-promotion the way it's being spammed in external links (again, read the guidelines). Most of the articles for the dj's under the label also don't seem notable for wikipedia either, I just didn't bother to nominate them for AFD discussion, maybe they'll be expanded soon making them more notable. There were only a few that had any notability and sufficient cites/referances. Side Note: having a link to your site on wikipedia won't help search engine rankings and such as wikipedia uses nofollow meta's preventing it. Alan - talk 01:47, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

you would have to show that the subjet is actually in control of the myspace, facebook,e tc.. which is hard, because it's usually done by management or record label, no tthe artist. Too many links in external links also becomes a link farm (such as having a link tot he record label and article interviews (which should go under an artile heading)). The record label should jstu have an internal link (if it has a wiki page) in the info box, and a link to it's website on it's wiki page, anything other than that becomes promotion spam. Rosie

Hey! The thing about Rosie and the table on The Closer is the way she handles things. She's German and speaks very little English. She's been permanently blocked on the German Wiki for tendentious editing, and had two blocks here already, so this is a problem child who's trying to mend her ways with mixed results. She also doesn't know how to edit a table, just put in one with one specific type of formatting. So she comes in, takes out the table in place, adds hers, which is often hard to read because there's no padding, then announces hers is better and the other one is shit (her word) and we're off. Check her edit history and you'll see what I mean. I seem to be one of the few who can get her to stop and talk after a couple exchanges, usually a bit sooner than this time. The premiere and end dates are fine, but rather than removing the nicely formatted table to add a cluttered one, all she needs to do is add a line to the extant table, and that's not something she'll do. In this particular case, she's also removing notes regarding the first broadcast of several episodes, no doubt because she can't read them and assumes they're references to outside sources. The point of all this being, the heavy-handed approach is the only way a number of us have learned we can get her to listen and discuss. Drmargi (talk) 02:56, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

DCR names

You should move Arborway and Jamaicaway as well. I am changing the {{Boston Road Transportation}} template to match. The list at Department of Conservation and Recreation (Massachusetts)#List of parkways is pretty messed up, some of the redirects are wrong, names going to the wrong place, etc. I was going to clean that up but if you want to do that as well let me know. The template should probably be "Boston road transportation" (lower case); please don't move that, I am editing it today. Sswonk (talk) 21:50, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

To be honest, when I saw the message I thought you were someone who was going to be like why did you move that!?!? lol. Arborway and Jamaicaway cannot be moved using the button because those pages already exist, so I already put in the request for an administrator to perform it. I was just about to edit the Emerald Necklace template when I saw your message. I don't know who decided that "The" was part of the name, but the articles said it was the most correct for some reason, no doubt original research since everything official says otherwise. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 21:57, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
What is your opinion on how to word it when the road is talked about? I mean no doubt the name is just like "Jaimaica Way" except combined into one word, so would "the Jaimaicaway was..." or "Jamaicaway was..." be better? It would be a no brainer if it was like Main Street or something since "the Main Street..." sounds weird, but in this case I'm not so sure given local usage. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 22:04, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
Keeping the conversation in one place, hope you don't mind. Yes, I just dawned on me they were moves over redirects. BTW, for future reference in your edit summaries, it's "conservancy" http://www.emeraldnecklace.org/. Unfortunately, there are several templates that use the all caps form, which is what "Boston Road Transportation" started as. See Category:United States metropolitan area highway templates. I believe they should be lower case, I am planning to find out by asking at WP:CAPS if I don't find the right guideline first. Regarding the "the" in these parkways, in conversation it's usually "the Fenway", but with Jamaicaway I would go without the article. I'll try a Google News search to see if it has a preponderance of one or the other. Sswonk (talk) 22:11, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
It should be lowercase unless it is a proper noun. I found that over the past year or so a user has been making articles for things on the National Register, but he has been doing so very poorly and just making a million stubs that say "blah blah is a historic blank located here" and not actually doing any research into what they actually are, include, and are officially named. I think that is how so many articles got screwed up. As for the parkways, when saying an address, it would be weird to say like "23 The Fenway" or "23 The Arborway" so if you drop "the" there I don't see why you wouldn't elsewhere. As a matter of fact, my old superintendent used to say that my school was located at "360 The Lynn Fells Parkway" and it used to make me sooo mad lol. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 22:17, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
Most of the news stories I found use "the Jamaicaway" when following a preposition or as the subject of a sentence it can be both, try this search: [2]. When it is an adjective, like "his Jamaicaway home", obviously the article is omitted. I always said "the Riverway, the Arborway" etc. and I live here, but the actual name is one word, per several sources. It's a quirk, like how Southern Californians put "the" in front of all the highway numbers i.e. "the 405", "the 10" etc. Tough call. On the NRHP articles, it is a work in progress, I am helping with it. They use the exact name given on the list from the NRIS unless it is misspelled, I have had arguments about it. More later. Sswonk (talk) 22:24, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
Yea I live in the area as well while I am at school and "the" is definitely the norm. The street signs and the big DCR signs omit "the" as expected since it isn't part of the official name. From checking with the USPS website, "the" is not included in addresses either. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 22:30, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
I use and checked a pretty definitive source, the database from MassDOT, linked here. They are all single words, no article. – Sswonk (talk) 22:39, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

On the subject of WP:NRHP, there has been a strong push to create articles for all of these places and complete lists of places for each county, or if there are many within a place such as Milton or Quincy, a separate list for those places. I contributed several photographs for the Quincy list. My next plan is to add to the roads and parkways articles as I can. The articles have instant notability, like state highways and census designated places. You probably know that thousands of settlement articles were created by a bot. The NRHP articles are stubs now, but will get filled in going forward. Can you mention specific articles that you are concerned about regarding the naming? I can look into it to find out if a common name is more appropriate. Sswonk (talk) 00:20, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, but I'm not sure an article on the fear of saws is really necessary. People are afraid of many things, but that does not mean there should be an article for them just describing what the fear is and presenting some examples. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 16:19, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of New England

Hello, again. I've just reverted your changes to the NRHP infobox for the subject. It's well established practice that the infobox uses the NRHP name, even if it's not correct. Most lighthouses have a wrong name, as well as many other sites. Churches are a particular problem -- this is not the only cathedral in Boston with the problem, see Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Boston.

When you see problems of this sort, please list them at Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/NRIS information issues/Massachusetts which ultimately ends up going to the National Park Service for correction of the Register.. . . . I'm not familiar with the process, so could you take care of it for me? The address is also wrong, the church has always used 514 Parker Street, not 520. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 19:58, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
Done. It's not hard -- there's no special format, see the bottom of Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/NRIS information issues/Massachusetts#Property names. . . . . Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talkcontribs) 12:41, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
As for the infobox embedding, it's not just you -- I tried and couldn't make it work. My experience is that nowhere near all infoboxes support the embed function.. . . . Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talkcontribs) 13:24, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

RFC at my talk page

In an effort to create a navbox for urban parkways in the Boston metro area, I have come to the realization that what is really needed is something that ties together the entire system first envisioned by Charles Eliot in the late nineteenth century. I feel that this should be a cooperative effort, probably created as a subproject of WP:MASS. However, initially I am seeking comments and/or assistance from several editors that have contributed in various ways to elements of the scope of such a project. This note is being posted to the user pages of Beland, CaribDigita, Denimadept, EraserGirl, Grk1011, Hertz1888, Jameslwoodward, Markles, NE2, Polaron and Swampyank. I apologize in advance to anyone who wishes to comment that I have left off of the list of users, as I may have unintentionally forgotten them and others. Please feel free to comment on my talk page under the heading I have created, linked here. Thanks – Sswonk (talk) 05:54, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

Fenway map

The Fenway map is almost complete, I need to add a scale somewhere. File:Fenway (parkway).png, it is OK to use while I am adding the scale, you will just have to clear your cache to see the updated file once I finish. BTW, I am going to move the "Route description" of Furnace Brook to the bottom, the WP:USRD/STDS standard calls for it to be right after the lead, however WP:IAR applies, I think the history of the parkways takes precedence and it can go last as you have done. Sswonk (talk) 23:14, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

Map's done, with scale. Sswonk (talk) 23:56, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
Thank you! I was hoping that was the one you would do first. One thing though, Google shows the connection to Westland to be the way you drew it, but the Fenway sign (like the picture that is there already) is placed right after the intersection with Hemenway and the Boston Assessor's website shows the connection to be part of the Fenway.
As for placement of the route description, I placed it at the bottom on Fenway just because I kept adding info above until suddenly it was all the way down. I think it works fine there. So I'm nearing DYK 5x expansion territory so could you take a look and let me know if there is anything missing? Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 00:33, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
"Under his direction, the now called Emerald Necklace took shape." I think "now called" is not standard usage, perhaps "Under his direction, the sting of parklands now called the Emerald Necklace took shape." Other than that I think it is good, maybe a few minor copy edits later in the week after others see it. Regarding the end of Westland, I source http://www.mass.gov/mgis/eotroads.htm which is the official state database. Under the data field STREET_NAME, they call the road from Hemenway to Fenway "Westland Entrance" while they call the connector in the west "Fenway Connector to Park Drive", which is why that part is red but the Westland part is not. I don't think it is part of Fenway, based on that. To change it might be considered OR. Looks good, I will start Lynnway next? Let me know. Sswonk (talk) 02:42, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
It's the Boston Assessor's plat that says that portion of Westland is part of Fenway. I'm still looking for a good hook for Fenway too. I started gathering some sources for Lynnway (harder than I thought) and I found a list of parkway lengths. If you don't have Furnace Brook, it was 3.72 miles in Quincy in 1903 page 151. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 02:46, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
I saw varying figures, and am not entirely worried about leaving out an exact figure, I would be if it were using a roads infobox. BTW, other than NE2 commenting on my calling it a "state highway" in the hook, see [3], no one has really moved on it. I am not understanding why, it should be perfectly fine. I sometimes wonder if there might be a little cronyism or politics involved, any thoughts? Sswonk (talk) 02:54, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
Usually no one comments except to say if it passes the criteria or not. If you add an alternate hook, usually whoever is choosing for the next update will just pick the one he likes. There's a lot less communication between editors than one would expect. In other news, Lynn Fells Parkway and the Lynnway are looking very hard to find sources on. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 03:05, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
One thing I meant was, there was a push a while back to make the main page less US-centric, and even one call to have a US-free day there. It definitely meets criteria, is comprehensive, and interesting. Still puzzled. If you can do what I did with Quincy Shores Reservation and stub the Lynnway for now that would be great. Fenway DYK

Could you have a look at T:TDYK#Fenway (parkway)? There are some issues that need to be resolved. Thanks, Ucucha 18:10, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

In Plain Sight comments

Thanks for the info - I was not aware of that particular section, and have previously only come accross the "do not change original text merely to cahnge UK/US to US/UK versions"

I suppose that was probably directed at less wholly UK or US topics

cheers for the insight on that one..Chaosdruid (talk) 01:03, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

Despina Vandi Greatest Hits

Νίκος —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tsironick (talkcontribs) 17:16, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Don't they have the same covers? I didn't see a different one on the musical.gr links you provided. It has to be very different to be included. It can't just be some extra text. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 17:31, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Muddy River Reservation

I took this phrase out of the Fenway (parkway) article. It suggests there is an actual reservation similar to Blue Hills, Stony Brook and so on. However, only the street and sidewalks are maintained by DCR. Searching Google using the "inurl:mass.gov" and "site:mass.gov" filters each return no results for "Muddy River Reservation". It appears the only presence of this phrase with any official meaning is the sign located after Brookline Ave. heading south on Fenway. In order to avoid confusion, and since the parks themselves are actually part of the Boston Parks Department Emerald Necklace, I feel it is important that we not include this phrase as it doesn't match the list of parks in the Metropolitan Park System on the DCR website. Sswonk (talk) 18:44, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

It is also on the sign for the Fenway at Westland Ave and the sign for Park Drive at Boylston Street. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 19:22, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Possible vandalism to "Holy Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church" article

I have been asked[4] by User:Orthopraxia to do something about User:71.195.186.130 who may be vandalising Holy Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church, but I don't feel have enough knowledge of the area to be sure that this is vandalism. Could you have a look at the IP's edits and see if any action needs to be taken. Thank you Grim23 01:11, 23 December 2009 (UTC)
