Stubstuff

"Washington State Highways"?

I don't follow why you agree with Rschen's proposed rename of both these existing categories, stub and non-stub. Can you enlighten me as to why this is a sound plan, as otherwise his on-going and determined efforts to Capitalise Seemingly Random Common Nouns are rather doin' ma heid in. Of the people to use "jai alai" as a greeting, you're definitely... the most recent. :) I haven't checked to see if there's "official terminology" at work here, and I doubt that Rschen has either, given his ignoring Californian legal definitions in those discussions. But surely this is just normal capitalisation rules: a given road might be "Washington State Route How's Your Father", being the proper noun of that Singular Entity, but why would a collective or plural reference to a whole bunch of 'em be capitalised? I might be misunderstanding US style conventions on this, but I've seen no citation to suggest that's the case here. Alai 01:16, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Struct-stub

I think I modified it because I thought the wording was clumsy and/or a little confusing, at least to me. So I tried to make it a little more clear. Sorry if I made things worse rather than better. There was some structure or something I was trying to apply the stub to, and it just didn't sound right as worded. I think maybe it was a "generic" structure, not a specific structure. Example: Suspension bridge, VS Golden Gate Bridge. Does that make my change make at least some sense? Specific type of structure wouldn't work, and neither would specific structure so I changed it to something that could be used for individual structures AND types of structures. Did I miss a stub type that would have worked for that? The stub sorting page often leaves a bit to be desired as far as locating what you need sometimes... Thanks! Ahh here it is Flood wall. I didn't consider that really so much of a "architecture" stub "This article relating to an architectural term, building feature or building type is a stub. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it." Since it really isn't a building, at least as I define them in my head. Best of luck trying to get it all pinned down... adding to the problem is that some things which seem correct to the layman can be technically wrong. I didn't really apply the definition of Architecture to bridges and such, but apparently it does apply. Stub

Ok, I'll Assume good faith back and assume you would know better in regards to "vandalism" and that you claiming that stub as even remotely close to vandalism was stress on your part. I'll create a redirect from to old stub name to the new stub name in a bit(probably not tonight) for ease of newcomers, like I said before with the other stub debates. Ah, it's that classic situation, isn't it SPUIe old mate. You're the only one being rational, and everyone else is a dick. It's good to know that one person in Wikipedia is marching in time and it's everyone else that's out of step. As for assuming good faith, of course I do. Even after you'd re-created bike-stub three or four times against policy, I assumed that you were doing it for fine, upstanding reasons. That began to pall after about seven or eight re-ceations though, and when you start deleting other people's comments in a debate it is very difficult to assume good faith. Adminship (Aecis)

Technically speaking, I've never been on a wikibreak. I've used the notice to warn fellow users that I might be away for some time, because of a very irregular work schedule. It was more a preemptive warning than an actual wikibreak. It's still possible that I won't be online for some time, so I haven't removed the notice yet. I've thought about the adminship, but I'm not sure I would be suitable for it. I don't have much experience in Wikipedia outside of stub sorting, vandalism patrol, the deletion process and some limited "genres." Thanks for the offer, but I think I'd prefer to stay un-admined for now. The main reason, I suppose, is that I simply don't know enough about Wikipedia's various policies and procedures to properly administer them — I lost track of things some time ago, and prefer just quietly editing to being part of the organisational framework. Admins, I think, should probably have a good grasp of how things work, which I'm afraid I don't. Apart from editing, the only real thing I do is revert any vandalism I happen to stumble across, and it's really not too much trouble to revert things the old-fashioned way. Two quick notes:

1. I wasn't trying to sway your vote. =) But if you do change your mind, either way, that's fine by me. I just wanted to make sure you understood that my objection was only to procedural parts of WP:WSS, not to the whole thing.
2. Neutral votes usually don't affect the outcome of RFA's except in very close nominations. In those cases, the bureaucrat can take into account Neutral votes. But otherwise they're mostly harmless.

I can easily believe that the only place you've sent the Ross Dependency proposal to is the Flags of the World mailing list, but it is not on the Flags of the World website, and as far as I can tell through various archives, including www.archive.org, it hasn't been for quite a long time if at all. I'll take your word for it that it was on FOTW-ws at some point, which suggests it is the source. I removed the notice because I was, and still am, reasonably sure that it isn't there now, hasn't been removed from there since January, and hasn't been on the Ross Dependency page there since 2000 at least. Another factor that made me think there must be another source (possibly FOTW mailing list) is that the Dean Thomas proposals on the page also haven't been on FOTW-ws yet, including one that has been reported on FOTW-ml but has not as of today appeared on the website. Farm Cove Observatory

Hi Grutness.

Just to fill you in on Farm Cove Observatory, my personal opinion is that it wouldn't be a great loss to delete it. It's basically the back-yard observatory of Jennie McCormick, an amateur astronomer in Auckland who also works at Auckland's Stardome Observatory (among other things). Its claim to fame is that she used it to contribute to the programme that co-discovered a planet, but my own belief is that the observatory itself isn't particularly special as far as observatories go, at least in the way that Wikipedia might find it notable. (It's neat as a back-yard observatory, just as many others are also pretty neat.) It's more the event that's important, and then about as much as it is when compared with the various other extra-solar planetary discoveries going on.

The reason the Farm cove observatory page actually exists was due to a wiki war several months ago, when a particular author (anonymous to wikipedia, but strongly suspected as a particular person by several people who I asked) spontaneously decided to kick up a fuss and tried to delete/vandalise a collection of non-Auckland NZ-related astronomy pages whilst at the same time trying to promote everything in Auckland even when it was trivial. (Check out the page's original write-up.) I gave up on nominating it for deletion at the time because there were already lots of bad feelings. I couldn't be bothered then, and I've held off since in case it seems I'm just being bitter, because I was quite deeply involved in the argument. If you or anyone else wishes to nominate it for deletion, however, I'm happy to support it on the grounds I've mentioned above. My own view is that the article isn't really worth keeping.

Errors in duplicate Auckland suburb articles

Hi, I see you've been merging some of the information from User:A1kmm's automatically created articles about Auckland suburbs into the main ones. I'd suggest checking the information carefully before doing so, because I have seen some unfathomable things in those articles. For instance, I think it's stretching a very long bow to say that Northcote (which borders on Takapuna, well north of the harbour) is one of the suburbs surrounding Freemans Bay (now an inland suburb, south of the harbour). Also, I haven't been able to verify any of the Census population figures I seen so far. For instance, the population of Mangere in the 2001 Census is given as 8202, and the article describes Mangere as consisting of Mangere Bridge, Mangere Central, Mangere East and Favona. I have a spreadsheet from Statistics NZ that gives the following 2001 Census figures for the usually resident population:

• Ambury 3159
• Mangere Bridge 5409
• Mangere Central 3054
• Mascot 3741
• Arahanga 1878
• Viscount 3843
• Mangere South 3258
• Mangere East 5037

Mangere South and Ambury are arguable, but the other area units are either listed or are surrounded by the listed areas. So I think the real population must be over 20,000, much larger than the 8,200 our article now reports.

I don't want to stifle your enthusiasm, but I wouldn't consider these duplicate articles a reliable source. If you want to tidy them up, I would recommend either removing them completely, or carefully checking the information before incorporating it into the previous articles. - Avenue 10:10, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, I only noticed the Mangere problem about half an hour ago before my message above. The only person I expected to merge things was A1kmm, and I noticed he hasn't been active lately, so I wasn't urgently worried about the other odd items I've seen.

By the way, I'm uncomfortable about how precisely the distances and populations are being reported, given that suburbs are pretty amorphous creatures (in NZ at least). Even if the numbers can be verified, I think they deserve at least an explanatory note. For example, Census populations are based on official Area Units, whose boundaries may not agree with the common perception of a particular suburb. - Avenue 10:30, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

Can't edit at all

Since at least yesterday, I have been completely unable to edit pages on either Wikipedia or Wiktionary from the computer I've been using for the past two months. I can create new entries in Wiktionary, but cannot edit pages or sections on either site...even my User page! I have successfully logged in each time, so all I can figure is that the IP I'm using (128.32.154.69) must be blocked for some reason, though I can't think why. Each time I pull up an edit page and try to save the changes, the clock runs out and the "connection is closed by foreign host". Since I can't edit pages, I can't post to any page about the problem, though I have sent an e-mail to the help desk. I am using a friend's computer to try to get this message through. Kurow/Kurów

Hi. The Kurow article stated that the name "Kurow" may have come from Kurów in Poland. An anon deleted this, and on the pl-wiki we have an edit war concerning the same problem. There are quite a few villages in Poland named Kurów or Kurowo. The person above stated as a fact that the place they live in is the source of the New Zealand's Kurow name. Additionally, as many people at pl: don't trust the person, a knee-jerk reaction of reverting the person is common. I'm reinserting the info (modified to suit the explanations from [1], check my english please). Hi, I uploaded an image of Ari Meyers within the the accordance established by Wikipedia (source and licence) and someone put it up for deletion because "it is unencyclopedic". The image is of good taste and just because it is a wallpaper image I don't think it should be deleted. Please view and if you can, express your opinion. Hi, may I ask you to semi-protect or protect Template:S-ttl? it's used in a really huge number of articles. I've put a request on WP:RFP but got no reaction.
