Angolasaurini

edit

Your recent edits on Plioplatecarpinae, Ectenosaurus, Angolasaurus and Selmasaurus have added a tribe called "Angolasaurini" to the Plioplatecarpinae subfamily. You have not provided any references for this and whilst the three genera do indeed seem to form a clade together, I could not find any references to a tribe by that name in the literature, do you have any references for this? Ichthyovenator (talk) 15:45, 7 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Well, actually, I created it as an informal clade or tribe.

P.S. I am an amateur (although I don't really like to call it that) cladist/phylogenist/phylogenetist (or whatever you want to call it, considering that there really is no correct word defined for the meaning).

Yeah, I suspected as much. It is completely fine to engage in amateur phylogenetics (I do sometimes too), but original research (such as coining a new tribe of mosasaurs) should be kept off of Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:No_original_research) - "Wikipedia editors must not base their contributions on their own original research. Wikipedia editors must base their contributions on reliable, published sources". I have reverted your additions of the "Angolasaurini" for now. Do not let this discourage you from continuing to phylogenetisize (?) or edit Wikipedia, just be sure to only add information to Wikipedia that can be backed up by published sources next time. Ichthyovenator (talk) 16:03, 7 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Ok.

Well, running off of what you said about original research being put on Wikipedia, do you have any suggestions on where I (or anyone) can post amateur phylogenetic work/cladenaming just for people to see publicly?

If you want to post work on clades or phylogenies and discuss those sort of things with other people, deviantArt seems to have a somewhat active community doing that sort of thing (as revealed by a quick search after "phylogeny" on the site (link)). Some examples I found; 1, 2, 3. Ichthyovenator (talk) 16:38, 7 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm... interesting. Thanks!

Inventing the name Suchodon malaytius (and the proper "Latin" would be something like Suchodon malayanus - except that I'm not sure offhand of the gender) and adding it to WikiPedia also contravenes WP:NOR. Material added to WikiPedia is supposed to be reliably sourced (WP:RS). Lavateraguy (talk) 14:35, 20 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Please Don't Tinker With The Taxoboxes

edit

Please don't add new features to the taxoboxes, i.e., your attempts to add a diversity entry, as it will not show up unless you modify the corresponding templates. If you don't modify the corresponding templates, your attempts will either not show up or screw up the article.--Mr Fink (talk) 02:32, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Please do not update cladograms

edit

Hello, I recently noticed that you changed the cladogram at the bottom of the Suchia page to include Erpetosuchus in basal Suchia. While this does correspond to recently published material, you should probably know that the purpose of a cladogram is to show the perceived taxonomy from a certain publication, in this case Butler (2011). Butler's paper did not place Erpetosuchus in the same position as newer publications do, and as such the cladogram showing specifically his phylogeny should not be updated for these more recent studies. If you want to show a more recently published cladogram on Wikipedia, copy the cladogram from the publication it appears in into Wikipedia format. Don't just hijack an older cladogram to show a newer classification. What if people look to Butler's paper to see why Erpetosuchus is in basal Suchia and find that Butler did not give it the position that Wikipedia is saying he did. What would that do to our credibility? I don't want to sound rude, but I just think you need to know this rule of etiquette when dealing with cladograms on Wikipedia. I have undone the edit, and I am asking that you do not update cladograms on other articles in the future if you plan on doing so. Fanboyphilosopher (talk) 03:56, 19 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
