Making it too easy
editCurrently, it isn't particularly easy to nominate a page for deletion, which has advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantages is that pages like Abortion don't get nominated for deletion all the time. A DeleteQueue interface could have a some sort of "block further deletion discussions" option or something, but I think some sort of smart metric system would work much better. Perhaps measure number of revisions, time since last edit, time of page creation, etc. And, of course, restricting the delete tab to only logged-in users.... --MZMcBride (talk) 16:56, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
- The interface already has 'ordinary' permissions (
deletequeue-nominate
in exactly the same way asmove
); actually they're broken down by queue as well, so you can give someonedeletequeue-nominate-speedy
but notdeletequeue-nominate-prod
, if you want. I think the easiest way to build in more fine-grained permissions is to make the nomination an action the AbuseFilter can act on, then we can avoid duplicating all that work. I'm not sure how easily that extension integrates with others; does anyone know? Happy‑melon 20:02, 28 July 2009 (UTC)- Well, some might view it as a regression if only autoconfirmed users can start a deletion discussion while IPs and brand new users can currently. (I think BLP subjects sometimes nominate their own articles as brand-new users or as IPs.) I doubt many people will care, but just something to consider. --MZMcBride (talk) 00:57, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
- It is better not to create new userrights. The system should be simple: if a page is unprotected than anybody can nominate it for deletion; if it is semi-protected than only autoconfirmed users can nominate it; and if it is fully protected—only administrators. There may be some specific occasions where an immediate delete could be even better that an automated delete queue. The main example I can think of is where a page was created by a user and only that user has edited the page and it was created within the last X hours then the page could be deleted immediatly. -- WOSlinker (talk) 13:18, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
- Surely, an IP shouldn't be able to delete a page that you spent an hour developing! Cuz that's what you've proposed enabling. Makes more sense for the process to be for nomination for urgent deletion be based on article protection, and deletion done by users with the oversight bit? Actually, creation of this tool sort of implies parallel creation of policy. Are you still working on this, Happy-melon? --Elvey (talk) 21:56, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
Notification of deletion discussions
editI see that you've proposed having deletion tags automatically appear above the page when viewing it. There are a few other possible features to implement, though I don't know how practical they would be. Talk page notices for the page creator or any significant contributor to the page (very convenient, but possibly open to abuse if someone nominates WP:AN/I or something for deletion). Also, you would want to have good watchlist integration. The initial action (starting a deletion discussion) should pop up in the watchlist like a page move or deletion would. It should also be possible to filter the watchlist (or use another Special page) to show all watched articles that are being debated currently.
Brion has wanted to implement something like this for a long time. I imagine he has notes somewhere (possibly still trapped in his head) that he'd be happy to share if you send an e-mail to wikitech-l. --MZMcBride (talk) 17:00, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
- It is in the roadmap and assigned to Werdna. See also http://wikitech.wikimedia.org/view/User:Brion/todo/deletion. Ruslik_Zero 19:02, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
- Those are interesting notes, thanks for digging those out, Ruslik. Notifying the page creator would be very feasible, although it might be tricky to do it 'nicely'; I don't think the 'new messages' notification is very portable...
- I like the watchlist filter, but I wonder if it will be possible to do that efficiently without some very messy/slow joins... Certainly since the deletion actions are logged as 'normal', they show up in the watchlist, RC, etc, in the normal way. Happy‑melon 20:12, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
Templates, categories and images
editWhen deleting these, will there be options to remove (or subst) them from pages as part of the deletion? mattbr 20:31, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
Deletion review
editHow would Wikipedia:Deletion review fit into the system? Would this be a fourth queue type or would it be part of the others? mattbr 20:31, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
Images on/moved to Commons
editImages created on en but moved to Commons are often deleted without the uploader knowing because they don't monitor their commons talk page. If you could address that, cool. Can you?--Elvey (talk) 21:46, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
