Custom signature
editYou have a custom signature set in your account preferences. A change to Wikipedia's software has made your current custom signature incompatible with the software.
The problem: Your signature contains a syntax error, specifically formatting tags that are out of order.
The solutions: You can reset your signature to the default, or you can fix your signature.
- Solution 1: Reset your signature to the default:
- Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
- Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
- Remove anything in the Signature: text box.
- Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page. (The red "Restore all default settings" button will reset all of your preference settings, not just the signature.)
- Solution 2: Fix your custom signature:
- Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
- Move one
</span>
tag in your signature, as I did in this edit, or make other edits to make the signature appear how you want it to appear.
More information is available at Wikipedia:Signatures#Customizing how everyone sees your signature. If you have followed these instructions and still want help, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Signatures or respond here. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:21, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

editI see that you changed "the safety of her convictions" to "the accuracy of the guilty verdicts". I am tempted to revert - think that the new text is worse, less accurate. Why did you make this change? Nhart129 (talk) 20:06, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
- "safety" suggests to me that experts aren't sure whether the conviction will survive further review (is "safe" or "secure") rather than whether she truly committed the crimes. My impression is the expert commentary has gone to the latter without opining on whether any additional judicial review will overturn the convictions.
- Why do you think this is less accurate? Harland1 (talk) 21:01, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
- There is Unsafe_verdict as a technical term that is appropriate here, I think. "The accuracy of the guilty verdicts" is not a standard term, so has to be interpreted by the reader. When I am the reader then I read "accurate" as "precise up to many decimals", the opposite of "rough estimate". Doubt about the accuracy sounds as if, yes, she is guilty, but perhaps should be convicted to only twelve lifetimes. Nhart129 (talk) 21:38, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thinking about the distinction you make, I tend to disagree. Reality is unknowable, "truly committed" is not something one can discuss. One can always concoct complicated stories, and even though these might be very unlikely, there is no certainty. On the other hand, in the present case, one is certain that the prosecution's use of statistics is flawed, that experts call the air embolism theories rubbish, etc. It is easy to point out flaws in the trial. It is the conviction that is unsafe. Nhart129 (talk) 22:01, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
- Finally, you say "will overturn". I think that the present legal situation is that the convictions cannot be overturned. But "unsafe" is a judgement about the past, about a flawed trial, not about the future. Nhart129 (talk) 22:06, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
- I disagree. First, "unsafe" in legal terminology means "a verdict or judgment that is likely to be overturned on appeal because of a defect." So it is a prediction about the future--that the verdict will be overturned--not purely a judgment about the past. Second, Wikipedia policy is to avoid the use of jargon. Readers who don't know what "unsafe" means in the legal context will be confused. Third, "accuracy" is not misleading. You say readers could interpret it as meaning the verdict is somehow imprecise--it should be only twelve lifetimes--rather than entirely wrong. But it is the sentence that prescribes how many lifetimes Letby receives. The verdict merely indicates guilt or its absence. So the accuracy of the verdict is about Letby's guilt: whether she really did it. No one reading a sentence that refers to "the guilty verdict", which is given by the jury, would think it referred to the sentence, which is given by the judge in a quite separate process. It is the former the experts are questioning. Harland1 (talk) 02:50, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hmm. Just take the quick definition you found: "Unsafe means that a decision made by a judge or jury might not be correct and could be changed later because of a mistake". That is more or less precisely what is meant. Especially the "might not be correct" part, since appeal has been denied, so maybe there is no "later".
- As far as I can see there are no experts that talk about "really did it". How can they know? If someone asks an expert "did she do it?", they do not reply "yes", and they do not reply "no", but they reply "there is no reason to believe that she did anything". They reply "the verdict is unsafe". Nhart129 (talk) 05:17, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- Ha, I first wanted to know your views before reverting, but I see someone else reverted already. Good. Nhart129 (talk) 05:21, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
