Marine Gate
Hi Hassocks - hope you are well and that your off-Wiki projects are progressing. I wanted to let you know that I’ve made a slight amendment to an article you started, Marine Gate. I removed the word “luxury” before “flats”. I have a particular phobia against “luxury flats”, which sounds to me rather estate agent’ese. That said, you will know the building better than I, and if they are indeed apartments of unparalleled opulence, let me know and I shall be pleased to self-revert. All the best. - p.s. Herbert Carden, Father of Modern Brighton, looks a good topic for an article. Is this yours, [1]? KJP1 (talk) 13:17, 9 October 2022 (UTC)
- @KJP1: hope all is well with you! Good old Herbert Carden: a mixture of genius and madman. He bought more than 12,000 acres of the Downs to preserve them from urban sprawl, and effectively created "Greater Brighton" with the huge expansion of the borough in the interwar period; but he also wanted to demolish the entire seafront and replace it with copies of Embassy Court, and demolish the Royal Pavilion and replace it with a conference centre! He could definitely do with an article; one to add towards the top of my list (I have plenty of source material). Those were indeed my photos used on the blog; I had to walk a long way alongside the A23 on the grass verge, and zoom in a long way with the camera. Fun! No worries on luxury flats; in both cases it might be sourceable, but I had a look through the more obvious books while working on something else this week and couldn't see it stated explicitly, just strongly implied. Having been on a guided tour around Embassy Court, I can see how it would have appealed to "luxury" buyers back in the day, although the block has needed a great deal of work in recent years to bring it back up to standard! Tallest buildings in B&H
Hi, I was just wondering if you would be able to help me with an article I'm working on. It's a list of the tallest buildings and structures in Brighton and Hove and you can find it at Draft:List of tallest buildings and structures in Brighton and Hove. I just need help finding other tall buildings/structures to add to the list, and I've done hours of research but there isn't much I can find online. The main problem is reliably finding how tall the buildings are. If you could help at all that would be much appreciated, thanks! greyzxq talk 18:30, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Greyzxq: I'll certainly have a look through my various book sources to see what refs and other info I can find, and any other buildings that need to be included. Off the top of my head I can't think of any obvious omissions, although some of the tower blocks in the Kemptown/Albion Hill area are possible candidates (St James's House in particular: that's 16 floors, I think). - Alright, thanks a lot! I've done lots of searching for St James's House but haven't been able to find anything about its height. I also haven't looked through book sources as I've not got any experience with them yet. Thanks again, greyzxq talk 19:07, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
