Buildings and architecture of Brighton and Hove
Hi. I have just come across this article and am really regretting that I did not know about it while I was still visiting Brighton regularly. Absolutely brilliant article. A million barnstars. Roundtheworld (talk) 21:11, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Roundtheworld: Many thanks; it was enjoyable to write and research, and made easier by the excellent range of books and other sources available about the city. Living here made it a lot easier to take the pics as well. Thanks too for your ongoing work on the East Sussex article, which is looking in much better shape now. - Y'know, with a bit of polish, that would do well at FAC... HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:51, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
Pevsner Surrey
Hello Hassocks5489 -- I seem to recall you were talking about buying the new Pevsner for Surrey, and wondered if you had? If so, could I possibly request that you look up the architect William Cecil Marshall (1849–1921), currently languishing under the unfortunate title of William Marshall (tennis), and see if he has any notable buildings in the county? He is connected with Hindhead/Haslemere. I've tried searching listings but come up empty, and adding multiple buildings from the Cambridgeshire volume has had the unfortunate effect of making it look as if that were the only area where he worked significantly, which presumably isn't the case. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can render! Espresso Addict (talk) 03:44, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Espresso Addict:: coincidentially I've got it on order and it should arrive on Tuesday 12th. If it does, I will have time that evening to go through and find all references to him, then summarise them for you (or even just add them to the article). Otherwise it will be 14th, as I'm out all day on 13th. Leave it with me! Incidentally I've just had a look in the "Hampshire: South" volume as well, as Hindhead and Haslemere are right on the Hampshire border, but it seems he didn't venture beyond. However, good news: Haslemere is also very close to West Sussex, so I checked the "Sussex: West" volume – where there is an extensive description of a house he designed right on the Surrey border. I'll add details shortly. Cheers, Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 11:32, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, Hassocks! That would be absolutely excellent. Even just a single notable building in a different area will make it more obvious he's an architect who happened to play tennis, rather than the converse. (I grew up in Hampshire, near the W. Sussex border, so some of that area is very familiar, but Haslemere is more of a stop on the line to London than a place for me! I don't think I knew anyone who lived further away than Liphook.) - @Espresso Addict: It has arrived (early, actually!) but has yielded just one building, I'm afraid. Admittedly, it was his own weekend house, built on the Hindhead–Shottermill road. I've checked but it is not listed. I've added the details. PS I had a good trip to east and northeast Hampshire in summer 2019 to assist this article: staying in Petersfield and eating/drinking at The Harrow, Steep each evening. I was particularly pleased that this fascinating building was accessible, externally at least. I need to go back to fill in a few gaps though! - Have you checked for your William Cecil Marshall in Pike's New Century Series? I have listed all the Pike county biographies in William Thomas Pike, which - further to my previous post here - I have now published. If you check also in the article's Commons category, you will see that I have photographed the indexes of a number of his New Century books, including the Sussex one. Unfortunately I do not have the Surrey one (vol.18/24). However your local library should be able to order it in. As I mentioned before, if you see any listings that might be of interest to biographers in any of the indexes that I have photographed, I would be happy to photograph those particular biographical entries for you. (There are far too many biog entries for me to photograph them all individually, so that is why I am doing it this way), Hope that helps. Storye book (talk) 16:33, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
