Welcome!

edit

Hello, HeatherThomson, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I noticed that one of the first articles you created or edited appears to be an article about yourself. Creating an autobiography is a common mistake made by new Wikipedians—as this is an encyclopedia, we wouldn't expect to have an article about every contributor. Your user page, however, is a great place to write about yourself, making sure to stay within user page guidelines. Just click your user name at the top of the screen when you are logged in, and edit it normally.

The page you created about yourself may well be deleted from the encyclopedia. If it is deleted and you wish to retrieve its contents, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page. If your contributions to an existing article about yourself are undone and you wish to add to it, please propose the changes on its talk page.

Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! --94rain Talk 12:20, 1 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Your username, sandbox and editing

edit

Hi, I have some concerns over the edits you've been making today. As I explained at Talk:Heather Thomson, you should not be attempting to turn an article about one person into another article about somebody else - especially if, as your username suggests, that person is yourself. Since I can't yet be sure that you are the person that your username suggests, I'm going to ask an administrator to block this account until we can verify that. I'm not doing that to be unkind, but I hope you can understand that sometimes people claim to be people that they aren't, and we need to verify that you are who you say you are before we can accept a username like this. An alternative would be to use a different username, one that does not make a claim to a notable identity.

My other concern is that the content on your userpage, in the article that you modified, and currently in your sandbox, is highly promotional and entirely inappropriate for an encyclopedia article. We aim to present neutral, factual information about the subjects of articles, without attempting to puff their importance or significance. For that reason, I'm going to ask for these pages to be deleted as well.

Finally, please review WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY - there is information there on why we discourage people from writing about themselves, and guidelines for what is and is not acceptable. I hope that all makes sense, and I'm sorry that this is probably frustrating for you. (Oh, and welcome to Wikipedia!) GirthSummit (blether) 15:48, 1 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of User:HeatherThomson

edit

A tag has been placed on User:HeatherThomson requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section U5 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to consist of writings, information, discussions, and/or activities not closely related to Wikipedia's goals. This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. This account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because the username, HeatherThomson, matches the name of a well-known, living person.

If you are the person represented by this username, please note that the practice of blocking such usernames is to protect you from being impersonated, not to discourage you from editing Wikipedia. You may choose to edit under a new username (see information below), but keep in mind that you are welcome to continue to edit under this username. If you choose to do so, we ask the following:

  1. Please be willing and able to prove your identity to Wikipedia.
  2. Please send an email to info-en wikimedia.org. Be aware that the volunteer response team that handles email is indeed operated entirely by volunteers, and the reply may not be immediate.

If you are not the person represented by this username, you are welcome to choose a new username (see below).

A username should not be promotional, related to a "real-world" group or organization, misleading, offensive, or disruptive. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.

You are encouraged to choose a new account name that meets our policy guidelines and create the account yourself. Alternatively, if you have already made edits and you wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name, then you may request a change in username by:

  1. Adding {{unblock-un|your new username here}} below. You should be able to do this even though you are blocked, as you can usually still edit your own talk page. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "Email this user" on their talk page.
  2. At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
  3. Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names. The account is created upon acceptance, thus do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.
If you think that you were blocked in error, you may appeal this block by adding {{unblock|Your reason here}} below this notice, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:08, 1 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
