Mesonychid Query

You have any information on the mesonychid families Haplodectidae and Triisodontidae?--Mr Fink 05:06, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Hapalodectidae's no problem. They're smaller (1-8kg) than mesonychids and have teeth that are specialized for slicing, where mesonychids have teeth specialized for crushing. They're known from Asia and North America from the late Paleocene through the middle Eocene. Five genera:

Hapalodectes Hapalorestes Metahapalodectes Lohoodon Honanodon

Oreodonts and Doublets...

I just remembered: some of the oreodont genera are synonyms of each other. That's why I removed all of those genera from Leptaucheniiwhatits last month... Unfortunately, I'm not sure which of the other genera are synonyms and which are valid now.--Mr Fink 02:21, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi Helioseus, I noticed you've been doing a lot of good work around prehistoric animals. It's always exciting to see somebody with knowledge in a specialized area like that. I've pondered why the fossil mammal pages are sometimes such a mess. I think the cause is simply that different editors read different sources and wrote different articles, sometimes unaware of what else was already out there. The extinct hippo articles are only coherent (you're too kind to say that they're well done) because they're a pretty small family and some attention was focused on straightening them out while I was researching the evolution of the Hippopotamus. I just started looking at Category:Prehistoric rhinoceroses and it's hard for me to a) sort out what's there and b) figure out what's missing. Paraceratherium and Indricotherium are separate articles, though I'm fairly certain they shouldn't be.

I've found that a single article like Malagasy Hippopotamus, which describes three species, possibly belonging to two different genera, ends up being a better way to organize things sometimes. Not sure what to do with those rhinos though... --JayHenry (talk) 21:30, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi Helioseus, hadn't seen you in awhile, glad you're still around and about! The article Evolution of mammals is being considered as a Featured Article Candidate. Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Evolution of mammals. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I thought you might be interested. The candidacy isn't going to pass at this time, but if the article's close (as I said, haven't read it yet) it might be a shame to see it fail just because the prose needs work. Oooh, thanks for pointing me to the Libycosaurus paper. I've wanted to improve a page like anthracothere for awhile, because dinos get a lot of love, but fossil mammals less so. And of course because of their place in hippo evolution. I also like the fanciful drawings of User:Apokryltaros who has illustrated a lot of those pages... As a fond aside: the Libycosaurus paper is written by the same guy who first described the Kenyapotamus.
