Uploading photographs
editI would like to upload some photographs - of politicans, none now living. I an not very clear on copyright- even when a picture is from the 1920's and 30's, the publication from which I find it could be much more recent.
Any pointers? Herne nz 09:15, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
- I assume you have read the Wikipedia:Image use policy. From that: Under United States copyright law, all images published before January 1, 1923 in the United States are now in the public domain, but this does not apply to images that were created prior to 1923 and published in 1923 or later. The year 1923 has special significance and this date will not roll forward before 2019. If the picture was originally published earlier than 1923 you're good to go, otherwise you will need to find a fair use for it or get a license releasing it for free use.—WAvegetarian•(talk) 09:20, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
So - how do I know a picture was first published before 1923 -other than by scanning it from a pre-1923 book? And does the image being published in New Zealand under NZ copyright law make a difference? Herne nz 09:23, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
- You would need to have a source that identified it as such, or be reasonably certain that it was. For instance, a photograph of a politician who died in 1904 was probably published before 1923. I have no idea what NZ copyright laws are, but that does make a difference.—WAvegetarian•(talk) 09:28, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
- This discusses the public domain and how it relates to images in the US and elsewhere. I really only have experience with US laws on this, so I can't be of greater help. Sorry.—WAvegetarian•(talk) 09:32, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi, likes you articles on NZ related people and topics. You might not be aware of the above page. A bunch of NZ people keep an eye on it and will often have a quick look (and sometimes even edit) pages as they are added there. I've added a few of your recent edits. - SimonLyall 10:15, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay
editThinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.
Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.
Be in touch with Schwede66 if this event interests you and you'd like to discuss logistics. Schwede66 09:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
