Template for page?
Hi, Hersfold. can you help me get a template for my page??????? I'd like my wikiproject work, interests and friends divided into sections. --S.C.Ruffeyfan 16:30, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
- Replied on user's talk page. Hersfold (t/a/c) 23:38, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, I'm OK with how it is, I decided. --S.C.Ruffeyfan 19:06, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
- Ok... let me know if you change your mind again. Hersfold (t/a/c) 22:58, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Watchlist question
can u tell me why when i got to preferences, and try to change the watchlist number of days to show from 7 to 30, it doesn't work...i followed the instructions and "bypass your browser's cache" but it doesn't work, do u know why? oh, and can u respond on my page, thanks! Ctjf83 talk 10:33, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
- It seems that the maximum time is seven days period - I tried changing mine to 30, and it switched it right back again after saving. I'm not quite sure why that is, but it's probably for performance reasons. 30 days is a bit far for it to stretch at times. You could try asking at the Tech Pump, but they'll probably say the same thing. Hersfold (t/a/c) 21:29, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
Miscellaneous
I'm a BSA member too. I also use Firefox --BrainiacMatt (talk) 03:37, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Could you help me...
...about that template project I've got in my sandbox at User:Rosenknospe/Sandbox3 ? I want to do a character list for the Highlander (franchise) pages and so get rid of all the character pages that will never make it to GA no matter how hard I try, so I thought I'd list them. The thing is, I want to be able to link to them individually from other pages, and I think current headers are ugly and there would be too many of them since there are currently about a hundred characters I want to list. Basically I'd like it to work like the Episode list template I used at List of Highlander: The Raven episodes. So I thought I'd do a template and I shamelessly stole the code from Template:Episode list and I modified it to serve my needs. Thing is, I don't really understand what I'm doing since I know nothing about templates, so could you be so kind and check it for me ? Is that a wise idea in the first place ? What are your thoughts about it ? I've written a tentative attempt at documentation at User:Rosenknospe/Sandbox and the first table at User:Rosenknospe/Sandbox2 (under the header "Draft for List of Highlander characters") really looks like what I want it to be. Thank you very much, and have a nice day.
PS: Please note that I won't be back online before Monday, December 17. Rosenknospe (talk) 15:18, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for all your work and advice. From where I'm standing it appears that the appearances column in the draft is not centered vertically like the others but you probably saw that already. I have more questions :
- Do you think the template will work even if used in large numbers (more than a hundred times on the same page) ? (Maybe it can make the page too heavy or crash something, but that's my newbie opinion)
- Is there anything to be done about the anchor ? Numbers are a bit awkward and they can't be automated (I think), but I honestly have no better idea. I tried to anchor the names, but it didn't work.
- Apparently you tried to fix something on the template; as there is text appearing on the template page it doesn't seem to be fixed, so can you do it ? I'm honestly unable to do it myself ;D
- Is there a way to make the rows narrower vertically when there is an image ? Is it just a matter of adding more text in the short summary ? It looks really good from the third line of text onwards, see example in User:Rosenknospe/Sandbox2#Draft for List of Highlander characters.
Please remember to update the doc though ;D and thank you again. Have a nice day, Rosenknospe (talk) 12:45, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
- Right, I'll get the doc shortly. Sorry, I knew I'd forget.
- You should be able to use it that many times. Some rather unscientific testing in my sandbox shows that you should easily be able to use the template as many times as you need, provided you don't write a full length essay for each character (which you shouldn't do anyway, of course). It doesn't contain too much complex code, and the only other templates it invokes only have a few characters each.
- Unless you plan on making the table sortable, I really don't see why you'd need an anchor anyway. Maybe I'm being weird and missing something, but it can probably just be removed. I'll leave it up to you just in case.
- Yes, I changed around some of the code. The text that was appearing doesn't really affect anything, but I've enclosed the whole mess in <includeonly> tags so it doesn't display anymore.
- Eh... no. I can toss in an image size parameter, but it'd reduce the standardized appearance and it's probably best to simply include more text anyway. Since the pictures will mostly be fair use, it's best to save them for the characters you have more info about anyway.
- I can't for the life of me figure out why the heck those cells won't do the vertical alignment properly. I've tried everything I can, and even fixed some things that shouldn't need to have been fixed, and it's not responding to any of it. The changes I've made SHOULD work, and I only see the error occurring in that one table - everywhere else I've tested it, it's properly aligned. It's making absolutely no sense to me. If you really want to get it fixed, I'd recommend asking one of these four people or bringing it up at the tech village pump. Hopefully someone knows how to get it to work right. If they don't, then file a bug report and let the developers figure it out. Sorry I couldn't get it done for you. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:52, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
- Right, I'll get the doc shortly. Sorry, I knew I'd forget.
- Actually, there are already full pages on many characters that I intend to list, so I'll do exactly the contrary : reduce each page to three lines of text or so, because they're not that notable. There will be maybe two hundreds or so of them, so I won't bother to write much on any of them (that's tiring ;). That's why I need anchors, to find them in the middle of those long lists. I've used anchors at List of Highlander: The Raven episodes, and I find them very useful. I'll use numbers until/unless I come up with a better idea.
- I can't solve the alignement thing either, but I discovered that it affects the last cell of the row unless it's the Year column, in which case the bug is fixed as seen in User:Rosenknospe/Sandbox2 (second table is OK now). If the Year parameter is not present, the last column is all bugged (first table). This works for all tables, so it's not the table that's broken as I initially thought, there's something wrong with the template. (Grr!)
- I'll go to the village pump as you suggested and do more intensive testing. I might have to contact you again when you're back from your trip, if you're OK. Have fun with all those turtles, finches and seals and thank you again for helping me, you're really nice and cool. Rosenknospe (talk) 15:50, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, ok. That plan should work out - I hadn't even thought of using the anchors in that way, and unfortunately, no, I really don't know of any other way to do that. You could possibly make the anchors invisible by replacing the visible {{{Number}}} with , and just leaving the parameter in the code as it is.
- That doesn't make any sense either, and has me even more confused. Just to let you know, I fixed a link in my last message - you may also want to check with one of these four people if the village pump doesn't produce any results. They're (supposedly) really good with coding and such and might know why the table is misbehaving the way it is.
- Anyway, you're more than welcome for the help. I enjoy getting these random calls for help on my talk page because they're usually quite a challenge and far more interesting than the repetitive questions at the Help Desk. Merry Christmas, and good luck with the template. :-) Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:06, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Ribbon request
I was wondering if you would make a ribbon for the new Socratic barnstar. It would be most appreciated. --Sharkface217 22:38, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
